J.Crew Attends The Inauguration {wahoo!}

"Thank you!" to so many of you, including Jen, A :), Drewablank, kitchy7, Anon at 1:43 PM, Kim, amylou, Anon at 3:58 PM, & Emily (in this post), as well as ~Kate, Jackie from DC, Jordan, Kathy, Kayce, & mjMuffin, who let us know that J.Crew made an appearance at the Inauguration (refer to here, here, and here for a few articles).

Malia and Sasha Obama both wore beautiful jackets from J.Crew's Crewcuts line. Michelle Obama "topped off" her gorgeous Isabel Toledo outfit with a pair of J.Crew sage green gloves.

J.Crew, thrilled to be included in today's event, quickly updated its homepage (image shown to the right) and sent out a press release (click here to read it in its entirety):

WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today, The First Family, including Michelle Obama, Malia (10yrs) & Sasha (7yrs) chose to wear J.Crew & crewcuts by J.Crew to the inauguration of President Barack Obama and for the past weekend's festivities. To represent their style and personality, they each wore J.Crew & crewcuts, J.Crew's children's collection, on the ultimate red carpet for the swearing in of the 44th President of the United States of America.

Throughout the campaign trail, America has witnessed the emergence of a style icon. Michelle Obama has proved that high fashion can be affordable. "We are honored to be part of such a momentous occasion in both history and fashion," says Jenna Lyons, Creative Director of J.Crew. It all started at Sunday's "We Are the One Concert," where the girls kept warm in crewcuts by J.Crew wool pique Herbie coats, detailed with grosgrain piping and charmeuse linings. Sasha wore an ivory style with hammered brass buttons, while Malia wore a dove grey double cloth style with horn buttons. The next evening, at the Kid Inaugural Concert, Michelle wore a J.Crew classic olive cashmere cardigan over a French metallic lace shell with a deep blue wool serge pencil skirt (the shirt and shell were lined in silk charmeuse). The Obamas continued to show their support for J.Crew at this morning's Swearing-In, where the girls wore full looks from crewcuts by J.Crew and the new First Lady accessorized her outfit with classic olive green leather gloves from J.Crew. Malia featured a deep periwinkle blue coat, while her equally chic sister wore a deep coral dress under her sweet guava coat, vivid orange scarf and glove set, each tied with a velvet ribbon belt around the waist.

"We wanted to offer a collection that would not define them, but one that would let their own personalities shine though," continues Lyons. For their special day, J.Crew proposed a few day and evening ideas, comprised of clothing and accessories that could be easily mixed and matched with their style and color sensibility in mind. The collection was presented in color stories, which include corals, aquas, lavenders and bright reds, allowing Michelle and the girls the option of creating unique outfits of their choice to reflect each of their own personal styles. Michelle & the girls' outfits were specially designed for them, however highlights may be seen in the Fall 2009 J.Crew & crewcuts Collections. ...

I am hoping we will get to see more J.Crew being worn by the First Family. I love seeing J.Crew in public! :)

  1. The girls looked really great, but those green gloves were hideous. They really brought down Michelle Obama's beautiful outfit. She should have worn ivory, buttercream, or pale gold gloves. The green just looked sickly.

  2. And Jcrew updated it's site to includes the information about the girls wore it's crewcuts.

  3. Yay! LOVED the girls outfits today.

And I saw a woman at the Inaugural luncheon on TV wearing the ivory Victoria Cami. I was pretty excited. My husband of course said, so you have a shirt that could be worn to an Inaugural luncheon? He asked, where have you been wearing it? To which I responded...um, to work, under another sweater....he just rolled his eyes.

So great to see JCrew on an exciting day. Everyone looked great.

  4. i thought the girls looked adorable! i loved their coats and am pleased to hear they were from j.crew :)

  5. The girls looked beautiful!

They both looked stunning and were wearing the perfect outfits- I thought for sure with the cold weather they'd be all bundled up, which they were- but I thought that'd mean no colors. Just LOVED their outfits.

Holy COW this is such good press for crewcuts- maybe it'll help the j.crew stock?? :)

  6. I loved Michelle's green gloves - and of course the girls looked fabulous!

  7. The first dances were so cute! Loved the song choices and the pretty dresses worn by Mrs. O and Dr. Biden.

  8. Girls looked adorable! great choice!!!

  9. Okay this completely off topic, but I have coat question. Anyone know if the Madeline/Lady Coat is made with the same material as the Shipley? I am looking for something more casual than the lady day.
    TIA.

  10. I loved the green gloves too!!

  11. OT, but in case anyone is interested in free cosmetics... www.cosmeticssettlement.com
it started today and is available at certain locations (like macys, nordstrom, bloomies). they are giving out free select cosmetics while supplies last! some places have long lines though, so beware.

  12. So...exactly what color was MO's Swearing In outfit? To me it looked like chartreuse, but I keep hearing it called 'yellow' or 'wheat' - are my eyes deceiving me, or is there a greenish undertone? (Which would explain the olive gloves, maybe.)

    ReplyDelete
  13. The girls looked really adorabe. I was glad to see the Obamas share our passion for J.Crew!

    ReplyDelete
  14. OT: is the site down or is it just my connection? Haven't been able to get on for about 30 minutes now.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anon @ 1:00am- it looks chartreuse to me, too. Glad I'm not seeing things!

  16. I loved the girls outfits and Michelle dress. Beautiful colors.

  17. OT - has anyone seen any price reductions online today?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Here we go again, yes the girls looked great but I am afraid this is going to start another political discussion that will turn nasty.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The last discussion forum that touched on politics in any way ended on a SHAMEFUL and hateful note (last I checked). PLEASE do not let that happen today...

Some people posted some really horrible comments that I really hope are going to be deleted...

    ReplyDelete
  20. I did not even read the post yesterday--I started to then stopped as soon as it turned political. Obviously, that was bound to happend--politics and fashion yesterday were hard to seperate. Let's try to stick to fashion alone. And if people said nasty things--shame! Let us stick to fashion, please. I agree.

  21. Wish there was a code today. I won't buy without one! What is left is pretty sad anyway.....but one or two things look good! Just need a code--any free shipping no minimums floating around???

    ReplyDelete
  22. CAKE and ICING are the two free shipping codes...$100 and $150 in that same order of the code names listed.

  24. SW - the Madeleine and Lady day coats are double-cloth, which is not the same fabric as the Shipley coat. Shipley is stadium cloth, same as the Lucinda coat.

Slastena recently reviewed the Lucinda at the end of this post and she provides a closeup of the fabric so you can see detail.

    http://jcrewchick.blogspot.com/2009/01/youve-got-parcel.html

Shipley has the same fabric as Lucinda and Slastena reviewed the Shipley coat in this post. She has several other photos of her wearing the Shipley on her blog as well.

  25. I thought they all looked wonderful. What a boost for J.Crew. It's too bad the clothing is not made in the U.S.A. I guess we can't have everything.

I mentioned to my husband that Michelle Obama wears J.Crew and that I thought I saw the Victoria Cami as well. My husband laughed and said, "Well, it is only a matter of time before everyone copies your style." Nice thing to say, even if he is just being nice. Although I have quite a few J.Crew converts among my family, friends and co-workers.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Julie - thank you for the free shipping codes. Do you know how long they are valid? I am ordering a few FP items, but probably won't get around to it until the weekend. I want my sister's opinion on a suit.

  27. I haven't really seen any reductions yet today - I think one of the jackets may be reduced, but it's hard to keep track of these things.

I could really use a good promotion......!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Julie: Thanks! I just did a mock checkout and these work :)

    ReplyDelete

  30. OT:

does anyone know if stores are still offering percentage off sale items? Particularly interested in SC stores.

    thanks!

  31. I bought something on Final Sale that doesn't fit and I'd like to return it. I know that supposedly Final Sale in final and that no returns are allowed, but nowhere on my receipt does it say anything about "Final Sale". In the past Finale Sale receipts have something on them to indicate that the items cannot be returned.

Do you think I could return this item? Or do you think it would show up when they scanned the receipt that it was a Final Sale item?

I don't want to be dishonest, but this item was pricey (Alabaster Tweed Coat) and I took a size UP from what I usually wear thinking that it would be roomy enough. Instead it's tight in the shoulders...smaller than my other size 6 J Crew coat! So to me it's defective. But still Final Sale.

Anyone have any knowledge about returning Final Sale items like this?

    ReplyDelete
  32. The CAKE code works! just used it on an over $100 order. i found some reductions (the silk dupioni skirt was down to 29.99).

    Thanks Julie!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Meredith,
I asked my PS the same question since my items did not show up FS at any stage while I was ordering. She said that I WILL be able to return them because it is their fault that the system wasn't adding the FS tag to the items. Before you go, call CS and have them put a note on your order that stays you can return and also bring a copy of your shipping verification or something that shows, or rather doesn't show, FS. You should have no problems and it is not dishonest because some items were coming up FS and some were not.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I loved the green gloves, which is easy for me because jcrew's burnished olive is one of my favorite colors! Not all of us need to be matchy-matchy and wear gloves the same exact color as the rest of our ensemble.

Someone yesterday mentioned the Peggy Noonan was wearing the Paradise jacquard blazer the other day. This morning on Morning Joe, I think she was wearing the Decade Dot blazer.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Meredith - I just returned 2 FS items with no problem. My recipt did not say FS either.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm sure you've all seen pictures of Mrs. Obama at the Kid's Inaugural Concert with Miley Cyrus and the Jonas brothers. Do you think that the skirt that she was wearing was the blue double serge pencil skirt?

    Thanks!

  38. There are a few new items on FS and it looks like it's been restocked. I just bought the new giraffe cami and a fireball bracelet I've been looking for. I think a few things have been marked down as well.

I'm bummed about that free shipping code. I placed my order a 5 minutes before that code was posted here. Sad....

    ReplyDelete
  39. Someone who was at the Inauguration said the color of Michelle's outfit was actually a pale yellow green in person.
Anon@8:46, I think the skirt was the blue serge. I read in another article that the entire outfit was JCrew, but I don't recall the shell.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't know how long the codes are good for...sorry.

    Julie

    ReplyDelete
  41. leslie - call CS and tell them you forgot to use the code. I bet they apply it to your order!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Whooohooo (I sound like Vicki on the Housewives of the OC! LOL!)....

I just cancelled my previous order and re-order the same two items using CAKE as my free ship code. It works and I saved $14.50!! Thanks to ANON at 7:11am!!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. darn JCrew! there is a lot of stuff in FS today that I want. The Taj Mahal necklace is on sell for $39. Can anyone comment on it?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Of course, I was freaking out over sasha's adorable bright pink tights. So cute! :) I mentioned in the previous Inauguration post that I really liked how Malia + Sasha had individual looks (by wearing different colors).

JCrew was definitely smart to cash in on Michelle's personal shopping preference. It's no Jackie O./Oleg Cassini, but MO was also not raised a socialite. Who knows how far it will go... she may choose to continue wearing JCrew day-to-day and for dressing the kiddos, and choose more high end designers for the fancier events (like last night's tour of the inaugural balls-- what a lovely dress!)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thanks Penny and Dani_California for the FS information. I'll try returning the coat to today at my B&M store. What a lucky break!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Speaking of M.O - how does the Crystal-button colorblock cardigan fit? Does anyone own it?

    ReplyDelete
  47. jcrew's website is down, woo hoo!

    ReplyDelete
  48. The site's down for me! :(
I wanted to look at some dresses for graduation, too!

    ReplyDelete
  49. What color were Michelle Obama's shoes at the inauguration? They appeared to be either a dark gray or an olive green.

    ReplyDelete
  50. anon @ 9:21,

the pumps looked more like a forest or hunter green to me... Definitely darker than the gloves. I liked the contrast.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I wonder if prices will increase now that J.Crew has received all of this press?

    ReplyDelete
  52. FFM,

With all the increases over the last couple years (and IMO, decrease/stagnation of quality), and the news that some of the prices were coming back down, I really hope that isn't the case!

    ReplyDelete
  53. CAKE just worked for me too. Thank You so much to whoever put this up!!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. The girls looked so cute :) It is adorable that they got to help pick their outfits.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Well I know nothing about these things, but she wore her Jcrew oufit on Leno in October and that did not seem to help JCrew's 4th quarter or prevent them from having great promos for the holidays so even the gorgeous Obama's may not be able to entice people to spend.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Heather: I completely agree with you! Let's just hope this doesn't make Mickey feel *justified* in increasing prices again, as opposed to keeping with the plan of lowering price points.

    ReplyDelete
  57. That's an interesting thought, FFM. Like Heather, I really hope not.

The First Lady has emphasized that (as well as with the media) she will try her best to be economical in her choices for clothes, and J.Crew being one of her "economical" choices. Maybe J.Crew will take a cue from that and keep prices down?

    ReplyDelete
  58. OT: For anyone who owns the His Banker Striped Shirt...are the stripes a deep navy blue?

  59. Hi,
Has someone has a suggestion about how to take care of the lili merino ruffle cardigan? the petals seem very delicate. I got a defective order (that has already been exchanged) but that left me thinking whether the petals will go that bad (peeled off) or whether this specific order had that problem.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Site is running super duper slow....looks like it is going to go down for me too....sucks rocks! The two things I want I bet will be gone too:(

    ReplyDelete
  61. ^I too fear the petals going bad on this cardi. I saw several in my B&M that had frayed petals. I might spot clean this one, rather than send it to dry-cleaner.

    ReplyDelete
  62. What's up with the website this morning. Sale pages load just find, but if I click an image to check colors, sizes, and possible order something, it will not load. (I'm using IE.) I haven't encountered this problem before.

Giraffe cami has been reduced to $79.99. I ordered one last week and it arrived yesterday. Gorgeous and I qualify for price adjustment. The fit is more TTS than other camis but I still ordered down. (I'm between a 6 and an 8.) Gave me a really nice slim fit.

    ReplyDelete
  63. All I can say is they looked ADORABLE! I personally thought Michelle looked fab and she will certainly change the face of fashion in the White House IMO.

Somehow, sadly, all I hear are plugs for J Crew on TV interviews and selfishly, I feel like someone has unwrapped my only Christmas gift and offered it to the world.

Ugh--there will most certainly be more J Crew followers and somehow I feel like that could "mess" things up. Not sure why...maybe more people buying up things on first mark-down so I can't wait for a second mark-down:)Ha!

No, really, I am happy for J Crew!

    ReplyDelete
  64. new free shipping! ICING is code!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Heather and others who mentioned Peggy--that would be a perfect example of someone who probably ran to J Crew after seeing Michelle but never shopped there before:) I enjoyed seeing the Clea yesterday (I froze my TIVO and stared at it:)

  68. BTW-cannot believe Owen Hobo is down to $150 and FREE SHIP today! Go get it ladies:)

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm glad someone else said that!! (bug pin) because I was kind of thinking the same thing, and feeling like a bit of a poo about it. In a weird way I almost don't want j crew to get really, really popular!!

Everyone looked so nice yesterday. I loved the colour palettes I saw - MO's pale yellow + olive, and Sasha's tangerine and pink. SO adorable. I think I will have to steal these colour combos...

    ReplyDelete
  70. Can anyone comment on the chiffon-florette cardigan in general? Fit, how the little flowers have held up, etc?

    Thanks so much!

  73. OT- I need some help with Maggie sizing. I'm not sure what size I would be for a petite Maggie. I got a velvet ecole in a regular size 2 and it fits great except that the sleeves are a little long. I was thinking I would try a petite size for the Maggie, do you think I need a petite 4 if I can wear a regular size 2? In some J Crew jackets I have been able to take a regular size 0 but I keep hearing other bloggers say that the Maggie is fitted, similar to the ecole.

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  74. OK everybody. Better buy the stuff in your shopping bag now b/c if JCrew gets super popular the items are going, going, gone!

I just pulled the trigger b/c I just don't know???

I want JCrew to do well but don't want to see myself coming and going. This may be the last season for that winter items that is.

    January 21, 2009 9:17 AM

D -- It has a boxy fit, with bracelet sleeves, so I sized down on that cardigan. It's very pretty, though a bit itchy as it's the dream wool knit.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Christina - the chiffon-florette cardigan ran a little small, IMO. I am normally an XS in JCrew sweaters, but I had to take a S in this one. The XS was a little snug around the bust (I am a 34C). The flowers are holding up pretty well, but I have noticed that the ends get a bit frayed, probably from rubbing against my wool jacket. It's not terribly noticeable. I love this cardigan, it's so pretty!

    ReplyDelete
  77. OMG--lots of puffers, ladies!! All colors and sizes (not cheap IMO) but there! Listen to me--I am enabling others as I am on a ban:) Why do I even do this to myself--I need to STOP looking at the site-LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Paper Bag--BTW, I was laughing at your comments yesterday!
I am glad I am not the only selfish one here-he, he:) Thanks for admitting your guilt:)

    ReplyDelete
  79. No problems using the CAKE code. Thanks so much for sharing that. I saved $14.50. Bought the Marie coat and one of the satin clutches.

    ReplyDelete
  80. bug pin--

LOL, I know! It's so bad. I placed an order 2 days ago (luckily, over the phone b/c I was having problems with the website). They had the petite vintage stretch bootcut cords in acorn in my size for $19.99 and I *had* to get them. I'm justifying it by replacing a similar 6 year old and terribly threadbare pair (the color was called "cognac" then). :)

    ReplyDelete
  81. BTW-some of this season's (Resort/Spring) plastic shoes are already on sale, as they should be. Oh, at only $189.99, mind you:)

    ReplyDelete
  82. MO and the girls did look pretty snappy yesterday in their J. Crew clothes. I imagine that Michelle can't afford the top designers, which could actually help the "normal" retailers since she buys clothes where the rest of us buy.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Regarding the chiffon petals on the front of the cardi....I noticed that after one wear, they were beginning to fray a bit. I lightly trimmed them and then sprayed the front of the sweater VERY lightly with spray starch. It seems to have worked.

    ReplyDelete
  84. More than likely now that Michelle is first lady, she won't have to buy her clothes. The designers will be competing to dress her, and will send her plenty of complimentary clothing for her wardrobe.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Haaa--I am laughing because was just looking at Chloe's blog and she has some (always hilarious things to say)but links to Michelle O's effect on the fashion industry and guess what? There WAS a 64% increase (to the already heinous) J Crew website after she appeared on the Tonight Show announcing her outfit was J Crew.

J Crew, now you REALLY better get on the ball with IT and get that site of yours fixed up! Y

Also, you know people are already calling into J Crew inquiring about where to get their hands on those precious coats for their daughters and that is why they had to announce that these were coats from this past season Christmas or specially made. I am telling you..it's trouble:)

  87. Ladies who have purchased from FINAL SALE and gotten a receipt that did not say FS:

  88. anon @ 9:37:
I got a Lili cardigan last week, wore it once (at work, so very light day) and the petals began to badly fray. They let me return it and I ordered another one, but I may return it without even trying, as I also saw some in store that were frayed. Point is, I don't think the fraying can be avoided. If you find a way to save the petals from this fate, please share! :)

    ReplyDelete
  89. Oh, just saw Leslie's post! Great idea, I will try that as I love the look of the sweater. Thanks, Leslie!

    ReplyDelete
  90. anon @ 10:56:
I returned with no problem (to a B&M). If it doesn't say FS on your receipt, it also doesn't say it on your account (I returned one item without the receipt so they had to look it up), so you should have no problem mailing in your return.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I fear Bug Pin and the others are right. JCrew is no longer a secret and the masses will be shopping until something else comes along. Do any of you remember when Sharron Stone wore that GAP t-shirt shirt to the Oscars? Almost overnight everyone was shopping at The GAP and the price of their clothes just about doubled. This could happen, at the very least items will sell out much faster. Just my 2 cents

    ReplyDelete
  92. smarty-Thank you! That is great to know. --10:56

  93. OT: Again, J.Crew online is down... too much access because of inauguration outfits?

    ReplyDelete
  94. I don't think jcrew has been that much of a "secret" for a few years... I notice people wearing it a lot more now than, say, 6 years ago. There's so many more stores now than there used to be, so I think they've been in the average mall shoppers consciousness for a while, even if they did not necessarily shop there. MO's patronage will just give them even more of a boost-- more people will stop in that store that maybe they used to just walk past.

    ReplyDelete
  95. J.Crew is offering free shipping on orders of $150+ with the code ICING. Valid through 1/25.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Anon at 10:56 - I did that last weekend. I bought a sweater I thought on Final Sale, yet the receipt did not state that and there was no FS sticker on the bag. Returned it at a store w/no problems.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I'm happy to know I'm not the only secretly selfish JCA out there! :) However, all those jumping on the JC bandwagon are going to be so confused and frustrated with the unreliable website, CS practices and crazy size differences. I almost feel bad for them..........

    ReplyDelete
  98. Smarty: I hope that the starch idea works on your cardi. I also considered lightly brushing clear nailpolish on the edges, but I tried the starch first and it seemed to work. I think it's just the nature of unfinished chiffon...it will always fray. Don't worry if the starch shows up right after you spray. It will eventually dry clear and the petals will be stiffer, but not too stiff. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  99. FFM

I'm sure designers will be competing for her, but I doubt that they'll be able to gift her these dresses.

The president and his family can't accept gifts beyond a certain dollar amount. Conflict of interest is usually given as a reason.

anyone else have a better idea on this policy?

    ReplyDelete
  100. I think I'll be a bit further removed from the j crew mania here in Canada because we have no B&M stores...yet! Hopefully I will still get to keep to myself a little!! Although the other day I saw someone else with my Thompson metallic tote!

    ReplyDelete
  101. I believe that the Obamas let the press know that they paid for the entire set of clothing for kids and Michelle from their pocket.

I loved the kids outfits. It looked very JCrew but I could not recall the coats. I buy a lot for our daughter so I am familiar with their winter collection. So, when I heard that the outfits were specially done for them, it made sense.

Good for JCrew to have gotten this publicity. They are now so frequently mentioned by the press.

  109. I'm obviously in the very small minority here, but I just don't get all the fuss over Michelle Obama. Sure, the kids looked absolutely adorable, but I don't think Michelle Obama's style is particularly interesting, original, or fashion forward.

Should be good for JCrew either way, though!

  110. Terry Gross just mentioned the crewcut outfits in Here & Now, in a segment about MO's style. She is interviewing a woman who said that while the coats are custom-made, they will be available in the fall.

  111. I'm still listening to the segment, they are now talking about Michelle's style in general and how it could potentially revitalize American fashion (and retail).

  112. OT, does anyone have a free shipping code for anthropologie?

    ReplyDelete
  113. If so much attention will be coming to JC because of the Obamas, I wonder how the website will fare? It already has service problems now and if there is even more traffic, will it be able to handle it? Will we be able to make any purchases at all in the future? :)

    ReplyDelete
  114. The website is really slow. And I've noticed a couple items marked one price but a different (more expensive) price when you click on it. I've found a sweater I was hunting for though, but a size too big, so not sure I'll actually buy it yet...so far my resolution to spend less money hasn't been going so well!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Now if only their dang site would work!! This is RIDICULOUS. I mean, I know we keep complaining about it, but it's been SEVEN months and it's STILL not fixed!!!??

    ReplyDelete
  116. anyone know when/what day anthropologie does markdowns? I bought a sweater and dont know if I want to keep it for the Full price.

  117. Emily: If the velvet ecole fit you in a size 2, you probably want to consider a size 2P in the Maggie. I thought the velvet ecole ran slightly smaller than the tweed versions. I purchased the donegal tweed ecole in a P8, but purchased the velvet ecole in P10. I think some other JCAs may have reported a similar experience with the velvet sizing.

Generally, JC recommends sizing up one size if you cross over to petites. I am normally a 6 in their jackets and I have been very satisfied with the fit of the P8. Its great to not have to shorten the arms and I prefer a shrunken fit. I have been considering a Maggie and if I do get it, I will order an P8.

  118. Cass, I have only ever seen FS for Anthro at the holidays. Two years ago it only lasted for , like, Thanksgiving week, and last year it was for orders of $200 or more. Any time I've done google searches for codes, it brings up pages of code requests! Shopping with them is kind of frustrating because of that. Also, I've noticed that their sale prices seem better instore but there's not one close to me (although there is an Urban Outfitters.) Good luck finding a coupon and have fun shopping!

  119. I think people are impressed with MO's sense of style because it is a look we haven't really seen on a First Lady. It is very fresh and current, whereas we are used to seeing safe, (hate to say it) bland pantsuits and basic jacket/skirt combos. Laura Bush was fairly conservative, I think, in the way she dressed. Hillary Clinton as well. Nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't really make an impression one way or another. MO is a breath of fresh air, in that she embraces some of the trends, takes a few risks, and likes to accessorize. SHe also moves beyond neutrals, hurray. I think a lot of women her age see her and think, I could do that! Because it is chic and polished, but approachable and not fussy.

In all the times I have seen her on tv I have only seen her make one blooper - the tight, bad blue mom pants. And everyone gets it wrong at one time or another.

I totally have a clothes-crush on MO and I think she is destined for style icon-hood!

  120. I love seeing the first family in JC. Makes them seem much more down to earth and relateable.
The girls were beyond cute in their coats. I think MO looked great too but I would like to see her in less monochromatic looks. I'm sure she looks gorgeous in more than head to toe yellow

  121. Cass:
If you sign up for the Anthro card (free, not a credit card), I think you get free shipping all the time. At least, it was this way when I got the card last year. HTH!

  122. Check out this MO style slideshow on the Huffington Post. LOVE that shot on the train - that coat/glove combo!!!!! To die for!

  123. Free shipping or no free shipping...I just can't spend $160 on a sweater no matter how much I wanted it! I'll wait til the next extra % off comes around and hope it pops up again on the website then. :(

    ReplyDelete
  124. anthro card members are no longer offered free shipping on every order. It cost Anthropologie too much.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Paper Bag Princess, I agree, this is a wonderful shot.

  126. This is so frustrating! I know the site has had issues for the past 7 months or so, but never as bad as it has been today, IMO.... it has been down almost the entire day so far! In the past it would be down, but come back up fairly quickly... not today! :-(

    ReplyDelete
  127. Now that the free shipping "ICING" is good until Sunday, does anyone expect any additional % off between now and then? Does JC mark down on certain days or does it happen randomly? I've got a few items in the shopping bag and am wondering how long to wait or just bite the bullet.

  128. Free shipping on orders of $150 or more: enter code ICING

...I will probably keep holding out for something better, regardless....we'll see. ;)

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't sure if I should go P4 or P2 but I think I will go P2 if I can find one in my size. I am crossing my fingers for tomorrow since J Crew usually seems to re stock a lot inventory every Wed morning.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Site is uber slow; stuff is coming out of my cart and of course I have only $60 worth of stuff I *really* want so I'm spending forever trying to find another $40 to get to free shipping min!! Why do I do this to myself!

I'll check back later today; maybe things will be better then. . . but of course I'm sure it will be bad for a while with all the extra attention/traffic

  131. Anon at 9:21 -- I saw a couple of pictures of Michelle Obama at the inauguration that made her shoes look blue, like the peacock blue shade J. Crew has out. I thought it made for a nice pop of color. (See here for a picture.)

  132. Emily-I have a p2 maggie coming today. I will review and post fit pics on my blog tonight or tomorrow

  133. kitchy7,

they look a little greener than the peacock color patent perfect pumps. Perhaps JCrew made a pair in a special color (and regular leather) for her, or they are a sneak preview of something for a future season?

    ReplyDelete
  134. I *think* I read that MO's shoes were Jimmy Choo...

    ReplyDelete
  135. smarty,

npr link that I posted said the shoes were jcrew, as does one of the images in the huffingtonpost slideshow posted by paper bag princess.

  136. Shannon--what color maggie did you get? I've been stalking the site for a grey one in 0P or 2P, but so far no luck.

  137. I need to see a better pic of these pumps! They could be bright peacock, or maybe jade like the gayle heels. I'm not sure...

  141. Hi all, just wanted to share a pleasent experience with a phone order. Wanting to combine my student discount with the free shipping code, I had to call Customer Service a few times until a rep picked up that said, "Of course those discounts can be combined." The first few reps said, "Only one discount at a time." I have been wanting to buy the trouser cords all season, but they never had the right size/color combo for me at the right price. At one point during the holiday season I was able to order a pair, but when I tried them on my normal size was HUGE on me and I had to return them. Happily, I found a smaller size down in 3 colors today and the rep agreed to make a note that I could return them if they didn't fit. Free shipping, 15% discount, and able to return final sale items if needed? I was impressed. Nicely done, J.Crew!

  142. Stacie- try phoning in your order. None of the reps I talked to flinched when I asked if I could use the CAKE or ICING code on a phone order (all 5 that I talked to before getting one that allowed me to use my student discount as well). Even though the fine print states online only, that doesn't seem to be the case at all. HTH!

  143. Sorry if this is a repost:

    In Uplifting (J. Crew) Fashion

Update: For Monday night’s “Kids Inaugural” concert, Mrs. O turned to chic and affordable retailer J. Crew for her wardrobe. Mrs. O wore a classic olive cashmere cardigan over a French metallic lace shell with a deep blue wool serve pencil skirt (the shirt and shell were lined in silk charmeuse). The ensemble was specially designed for Mrs. O, but highlights will appear in the Fall 2009 J. Crew collection.
    View the J.Crew sketch here.

  145. Thanks for the info on Anthro. They are even worse than JC when it comes to shipping/codes. I guess they get away with it b/c they have fewer stores and their product is less readily available?

Yes, the JC site is moving at a snail's pace or is down. Must be the MO effect.

I'm glad that you are going to do a review on the Maggie. I always find your reviews very helpful when I am contemplating an item!

I think I am going to be stalking the Maggie on the website for a while:)

  147. Yep, I see now that they were Jimmy Choo Glacier kitten heels in a dark green. See here.

  148. To the anon wanting to know about the color of the Isabel Toledo outfit: I believe I read in an interview with the designer that the color was called lemongrass.

Ha--sooooooo true Amy! I actually feel bad for them too--it is sad!
I think back to all the trauma and hours I have spent sorting through my various nightmares-website and shipping--not to mention sizing mishaps-poor things. They will either get frustrated and forget it or if they are a glutton for punishment, they will stick around like all of us:)

  150. I am not positive but I believe that M.O. can wear clothing on loan from designers and it can really be justified as supporting American designers and American fashion. I think that is great for her to do so as it is something she has been doing already so she's not just taking advantage of her new role as First Lady. Promoting the U.S.A. is expected and she is definitely suited for the role where fashion is concerned.

I wore a cardigan with a belt a couple of weeks ago and thought I was being pretty creative. LOL. I imagine we'll see a lot of imitation of Mrs. O's looks. It is the most sincere form of flattery, after all.

Thanks for the slideshow post. So cute to see the younger daughter standing on a box at the inauguration. I always had to do same for family photos as I was the "little one". Brought a smile to my face.

  151. for the lili cardigan, the petals can be treated with fray stop (spray or pen)@ amazon for $4.49... anyway, it is a bummer that J Crew didn't do this.
