Darlings, is it time for a J.Crew coupon code?

Yes it is that wonderful time!

A big "thanks!" to Kate! (in this post) who let us know that J.Crew is offering free shipping on orders of $150+ with promo code CS-989. This offer expires 2/14/09. :)

  2. Oh wow! I saw this ring in stores today at BR and it is IDENTICAL to the starburst ring but in silver! How funny! Interesting to note that the starting price for this ring at BR was much lower then at J Crew. I have the J Crew version and love it so much I might get it in silver too!

  3. I knew I should have waited before I placed my orders, I could have used the code. I ordered the Saturday pants, and some of the Painter tees.

  4. Thanks for the code! Unfortunately, I will not be taking advantage of it because I still cannot view anything on the website due to the "green screen" error :(
Numerous emails to J Crew and still no fix.

  5. Just wondering if anyone has tried on the ruffle collar trench coat 11899 in the "warm coal" and if you had any comments on the color.

I tried it on in the khaki color and I liked the fit (it wasn't too boxy on me) but I have too many khaki jackets! The B&M's around me aren't going to get that color in so I may have to order it online (now with the free shipping!) but I actually hate to order things unless I really do want them. I just want to try it on to see if the color is flattering but I don't want to pay full price!

I do have my Spring Rewards card to use but what if I return the jacket, do I get my rewards back?

  6. WOOOHOOO! I was waiting for a code to place an order. Thanks!

  7. I have a question that maybe fellow J.Crew Aficionadas can answer for me: does J.Crew regularly increase prices? Or offer discounts on random things for only a certain amount of time?

I recently purchased the Stretch Wool Daphne Dress, which I love, but need in a petite size. When I bought it, it was $125, and there were no petite sizes available. Now there -are- petite sizes available for this dress, but the price has suddenly jumped to $185! Am I going insane?

  8. Shopper555:
I drove over an hour today to two stores to find the Keegan in coal (I could've called ahead, I realize, but it was my excuse to go to the "big" JCrew). Neither store had it, including the "big" store that seems to get most everything except all of the Collection that only goes to NYC. I ordered it from the red phone and will post once I receive it. I previously bought the white and am now torn between them since having seen the coal pop up online!

    Will report back...

    ReplyDelete
  9. Sometimes jcrew prices regular sizes and petite sizes differently. Within a reason, jcrew usually doesn't raise prices. However, half a year or a year later, jcrew may bring back some items from past seasons and raise their prices.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Smarty, yes, please report back on the Keegan! I'm on the fence whether or not to order one online. I decided to wait awhile and think it over. I called the 4 B&Ms in my area and none will be getting it in the Coal color. Its crazy how we get obsessed with an item!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Anon @ 12:30 - Thanks for responding. :) The price for the regular Daphne dress also went up too, not just the petite size. I literally bought the same exact dress for $60 cheaper just 2 weeks ago. Strange! I'm so bummed now that it doesn't fit. :(

  12. OT – Did anyone preorder items in the look book? Did J.Crew send you a confirmation number? I had a terrible experience when I ordered a Cascading flowers bouclĂ© Astrid jacket… but I am wondering if it is worth to try.

  13. I have notice some of the item on the Men's page prices have gone down. Most of the items I saw were jeans. I saw a couple that I have been waiting to be on sale went from $118 to $98 and some from $98 to $96. Are they in need of getting rid of these jeans?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Shopper555,

It is my understanding...and reading the fine print on your JCrew statement (back) that you do not get your rewards money back if you return the item. For that reason I NEVER use my rewards on final sale and am very SURE of my purchase with my rewards card. Better safe than sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thanks for the code but I won't be using it. I don't buy new items at full price...never have, never will. I don't care what Mickey says! Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  16. no, i've returned things i've bought with my rewards card and they can just give you a gift card back or if you're returning and immediately buying use it as credit.

    ReplyDelete
  17. i've used my rewards card on sale items, returned them, and then they sent me a plain old JC GF in the mail. Took a couple weeks, but I got it back.

    ReplyDelete
  18. AppGal So cute! I ordered mine from a B&M as well...can't wait for it to arrive. :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Anon 5:09AM:
Actually works out better if you have to return the items purchased with your rewards card.

The rewards cards are usually set to expire in just a month or two from the time they are issued to encourage shoppers to buy from the new seasonal line) - but (like others have mentioned) - when you make a return they give you the balance back on a regular J.Crew Gift Card - that doesn't expire.

    HTH!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I have the same experience with the rewards card. I ordered something on-line, mailed it back and they sent me a gift card (without me asking, that does not expire).

  21. If anyone is interested I am going to "try" and return a few final sale items tomorrow at my B&M. If you are interested in them send me an e-mail and I will sell them for price paid.

  22. I went to the BM yesterday & tried on the chiffon roses ringspun T ~ it is gorgeous; I can't decide bet the beige or pink. Will go again today & buy one of the 2. Also tried on the new cami, love it in breeze, but will wait for sale on that one. I tried on the micro stripe Melanie, its pretty, but will wait on that too. I wonder how long bef. these are put on sale; it seemed like the previous catlogue stuff went on sale quickly. Any guesses?

  24. My JCrew rewards card is not burning a whole in my pocket. I am going to wait and see what goes on sale in the next few (6 weeks) and wait for the next roll out. Hopefully, I can get more bang for my buck then buying something at full price. Wait. Patience:)

OT: Did the Clara come in an XL? I am just worried about the arm being too snug

    ReplyDelete
  29. Has anyone tried the new super 120s Jayne dress? The neckline seems like it could be a problem as far as what to wear over it. I have a super 120s black Abby jacket (no collar) that maybe would work, but I'm not sure. I loved the 120s dress from last fall - got the violet one - and would love a spring version.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Adorer, Clara is a layer of billowy chiffon over a soft wool shell so there is some give/stretch to it. I'm not sure I would advise you to size up if you are normally a L... If it were tight in the arms I think you could stretch it a bit - otherwise I would say it was TTS. I did not see any XLs online. Papaya is the only colour left I think - what a great price! I love clara!

    ReplyDelete
  31. La Belle Helene: I was looking at that dress as well and wondering how and what kind of jacket i could wear with it. I'd be interested in ideas, too, because i'm sure the fabric is divine, and it's quite cute.

    ReplyDelete
  32. FFM: Were you ever able to fix your "green screen problem"?

The only way I can view items on JCrew.com is by starting in safe mode still.

    ReplyDelete
  33. La Belle H, I am so with you about that dress - it is soooo beautiful. I would not be too worried about the neckline under a jacket. I think you could arrange it under any style so it would work. How did last year's version fit? TTS? I find J Crew dress sizing particularly hard to guess at...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah, Cleo26, just because of the way the neckline falls, it seems like it could be problematic to wear something over it. I really do like the 120s fabric though, and I love suiting dresses - but I would need to be able to wear something over it.

Have you seen the tea rose color in person? That's the one that intrigues me. Only I like true pinks, or blue pinks, and I'm not sure if the tea rose will work. If this dress came in azalea, I'd already have bought it :-)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I ordered cords in warm saffron. Does anyone have these? What do you recommend pairing with them?
Problem is I don't think there is anything in my closet to wear with them. I kinda like the top they are paired with on the site. what's the name of that?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Paperbag princess, I loved the 120s dress that came in royal violet - it had a great funnel-neck collar and elbow-length sleeves. I *wanted* to love the one that came out later in the fall, that was available in peony, but I HATED where the "waist" hit me - it was between my bustline and actual waist - so much that I returned it.

I am so hit and miss with J.Crew dresses, too. I'm frustrated that so many of them hit at such a weird place on the torso, like several inches above the belly button, which I find so unflattering.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hi all, totally OT but I think I saw a thread on this a while ago. Is it possible to shrink my JC merino wool sweaters a in the washer/dryer? The size I bought is totally wearable but would look nicer if it was a bit more snug...

    Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thanks La Belle H, I am nowhere near a B&M so I think the only solution for me is to order 2 sizes and send one back. Argh, yes - its the darn waist that's make or break. The dusty rose is what I was thinking about as well...so pretty. I just ordered a skirt in that colour so I can report back on the colour next week if you like!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Paper Bag Princess - please do share your thoughts of dusty rose. Colors can be so hard to discern just on a computer.

    ReplyDelete
  40. My dusty rose belt has been spoken for.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Shopper555 - I have returned items where I used my rewards card, and I have received a full credit back on my JC card for the amount of the item, as if the rewards card was never used. I'm surprised that this is not a consistent practice, and that others have received a gift card for the amount instead.

  45. Merino Rose Cardigan Owners:

I bought two of these in final sale and LOVE them. The plum one, however, had a pretty sad couple of flowers on it. I decided to use spray starch on them as someone suggested for the floppy rose pin. Now my sweater looks GORGEOUS. Although I don't know how it will launder, here is what I did...

I loosely wrapped a rubber band around each of the flowers so that, individually, they formed a loose "cone shape". Then, while protecting the rest of the fabric with a hand towel, I sprayed the roses with extra heavy spray starch until they were wet. I then hung the sweater on a chair so that the flower hung down slightly.

I waited for it to dry a little bit and started separating the petals one at a time. I would then allow it to dry more, separate more, and repeat until the starch was completely dry. I then cut the rubber band and unwrapped it from the flower so I did squash it.

Once completely dry, the flowers look INCREDIBLE with LOTS of dimension, definition and character.

I don't know how well this will launder, but I always wear a tee under the sweater, so I don't launder mine frequently. If I find that I have issues, I will let you all know.

Here's hoping that there are still a few decent restocks of final sale stuff when items are shipped back this week. There are a few pieces (and duplicates of favorites) I would still like to get - even without the extra 30% off.

  46. Paper Bag, NO!!! Washer/ dryer will destroy your merino wool sweater. I tried on one and now it is a crewcuts sweater! The fabric is now thicken and rough.

  47. Anon at 11:37. Retailers close less successful stores all the time. The key to seeing how well the organization is really doing is if they are opening new stores (which J. Crew is). We should be happy when they close underperforming stores. It keeps the organization more healthy and investors happier. No retail orgs are doing great right now, but no need to panic with J. Crew yet. I am way more worried about Talbots!

On another note - I should receive my Palm Leaf necklace in fresh mint, my cluster ring in black and my amelia cardi tomorrow. Yeah!

    ReplyDelete
  48. J.CrewAdorer - if you look at the Tartine page, they pair that sweater with saffron cords and it looks great.

Paper bag -- keep the sweater out of the washer! I agree with anon that "dry clean only" sweater + washer/dryer = CREWCUTS! I ruined my favorite J Crew lambswool v-neck with the washer, without even using the dryer. You might be able to handwash in cold water, though.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Has anyone tried on the Greneda Palm cami yet? I would love to read a review before ordering!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Handwash + dryer = crewcuts too. Too many failed experiments. So don't go there!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Paper Bag - If the others are saying not to wash your sweater in the washer, I would not (as Rosie suggested) wash it by hand either. It's not the washer that shrinks the wool, it's the exposure to, and soaking in, water that shrinks it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I've been lucky with merino in the washer. I've put T-necks and cardis through the regular cycle in a mesh bag then air dryed flat, and as a precaution (when doing a load of only merino and cashmere) on the handwash cycle then air drying flat. None of my sweaters have that type of embellishments, though, so no flowers to "wilt."

    ReplyDelete
  53. musthavejcrew- any stylistic reason you're getting rid of the femme in cantaloupe? One popped up for pennies in my size last week and I ordered it without much regard to what to wear with it, etc. Just wondering if it's difficult to style. TIA!

  54. tea rose is extremely close to bright rhubarb. It's a reddish pink (or pinky red). It's definitely not a true pink nor is it a true red. So hard to explain if you haven't seen it IRL.

    ReplyDelete
  58. re: warm saffron cords- I'm not sure of the name of the flower cami they have in the pic of the city fit trouser cords, but it is really pretty and you could use the colors in it to work around. Navy, browns, cream and white, lt. grey, and red or orange accents would work nicely. I have that color of the Peyton and wear the grey Lydia top underneath which looks cool. HTH!

  63. OT - For any Burberry fans out there, Nordstroms Rack is getting quite a bit of Burberry apparel and bags at 50% off or more. I picked up a $800 raincoat for $200.
I guess Burberry is being affected by the economy as well. I know that they are shutting a manufacturing plant in the UK and laying off employees.

  66. Anon @ 2:44 - I noticed the new spring colors in the stone-bead ribbon necklace, they look very fresh. I bought the glazed pecan and it should be arriving tomorrow or Tuesday. 67. Anony@12:09

Yes, no need to worry about JCrew YET but I am sure they have planned to open these new stores BEFORE the economy got bad.

Also, was reading an interesting article on how one woman (Michelle Obama) cannot save a struggling retailer. How true!

  68. A DC gathering sounds great---I really want to see "He's just not that into you" also...

    ReplyDelete
  69. I hope J.Crew can still make a go of it. I love their clothes and have bought so much stuff lately I think I would go into withdrawal if they shut down. I just can't find clothes with the same "YAH!" factor anywhere else for the price. Love when I try on something and look in the mirror and say, "Yah, THAT'S what I'm talking about!"

Well, the shoes haven't been as well-made as they used to be and the prices just keep going up so, but the rest of the stuff is still great. It's especially satisfying when you wear something from a few years ago and it still looks fab.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I read JCA daily but rarely comment but today I a pissed!!!

What's the deal on suiting? I live in the DC Metro area and decided to call before I headed out in search of the Jayne Dress. I discovered that Annapolis does not carry suiting at all will not. Tysons which is the biggest store in the area, also is not carrying the Jayne dress--which no real explanation provided. Pentagon City does have it but only in Tea Rose. So far this is only item I was interested in buying from the Spring Collection but now I'm so annoyed I don't want to. Why in the world would I want to drive an hour+ (from Charles County) to any of the so called local stores just to place an order from the red phone to pay full price if I want free S/H? That's absurd!! I thought I could go to the B&M, try on the dress, use the 15% student discount with my rewards cards and walk away with the two colors I wanted.

JCrew is really starting to get on my nerves. I haven't jumped on the bandwagon regarding the growing quality issues or the massive internet complaints even though it is highly annoying, But now that they are practically forcing shoppers to go to the internet to but items that are not listed as catalog/internet only and pay outrageous S/H, my patience is wearing thin. I love JCrew merchandise but I am ready to walk away from all the chaos and disorder. It should not be this darn complicated to spend money on items I really don't "need", especially in a bad economy.

Mickey better to get it together and soon or be prepared to loose customers in droves.

  71. j crew adorer- the Watercolor lydia is super cute, but from Fall 08 so you will be hard pressed to find it in stores anymore. Maybe e-bay? FYI-it does run big so I would advise at least 1 size down. I LOVE mine:)

  72. Now that there are NO sale bags on the website, I am obsessed with an Oslo or Jamie bag. I have been searching e-bay and the Oslo bags are really pricey... but there are several Jamie bags from sellers in VA. I assume J Crew has some sort of clearance center there. Any JCA's have any input on sellers in VA? Is all the merch seconds? Preference on Jamie vs. Oslo?

  78. The merchandise at the clearance store in VA is not seconds/lower quality... it's the same quality and same stuff they have in the real stores/online. So I think you can buy with confidence from people selling from the Lynchburg area. They basically just sell stuff at cost at the clearance store which is why people are able to sell it on eBay I guess. I wish I lived anywhere near Lynchburg... A few months ago I bought a pair of crocodile Helene slingbacks from the Paisley Petunia on ebay, who is located in VA, and they are gorgeous and I had a good experience. She shipped fast and the shoes are great. And I got a good deal... $100 for a $500 pair of shoes.

  79. Rand0mf8 - I travel extensively for work and I always check out the J.Crew stores in the cities I visit. Unfortunately, there is not much suiting sold in stores. I've seen the most in NYC and even there it is not the full complement. I guess it's hit or miss in most markets so J.Crew sticks to the catalog/web for their suiting. It's too bad because they do have some great suits.

I would recommend trying it on in the store where you found the suiting and then using the red phone to have the items you want shipped to you at no charge. I've found the SA's to be very good in that regard. You can return any unwanted items at any B&M.

J.Crew has a similar strategy for swimwear. It is sold in some store but not all. Definitely easier to have it shipped to you.

  80. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice about shrinking my merino sweater. I took your advice and did not wash it. BUT, I did a little experiment in 'controlled shrinkage' and it was a success!

I turned my sweater (a merino wool crew neck) inside out and sprayed with Febreeze until it was a bit damp. I'm sure water would work the same. And then I put it in the dryer, normal setting, for about 5 minutes, maybe a little more. It worked! It shrunk from a small to about an extra small, I would guess. A few cautions though. It seems to shrink more in the length than anywhere else - at the bottom and in the arms. And the fabric, as someone warned, did tighten up just a little - it became a bit of a tighter, thicker gauge knit, but enough to bother me. I think the key is not leaving it in the dryer very long - you'll be amazed how quickly it shrinks. I did this with a sweater I wasn't too attached to, so I am happy with the results. But if you love your sweater and/or it it was expensive, then I might think twice about the controlled shrinkage technique!

Hope this is useful to someone else!

  81. oops, my post above should say that the wool didn't tighten ENOUGH to bother me.

  85. Rand0mf8: Not every store can carry every item, chill out. If every J. Crew store carried every new item in every color, on top of clearance items from seasons past it would have to be huge. Only higher value stores carry the suiting, it has always been that way. If you ordered two of the dress online, wouldn't it be enough to get free shipping with the latest code? Take a Valium...

  88. the clearance store is open to public. I doubt they ship. The items they carry are supposed to have problems. Sales are final there. If you hesitate in the store, SAs there usually talk you out of it. Therefore, I do not think they like to sell items to people who haven't even taken a look at what they are buying.

  90. JCrewAdorer, which size did you need for the watercolor lydia? My sister had the Large (maybe it was an XL?) that she didn't want one, and you look like (judging from the picture, so sorry if I offend ;x) you may be able to fit it, I think she may be able to sell it to you for $50. -Jen P.

  91. Someone mentioned in another post that the extra percentage off is over in the stores, does anyone know if this is correct? Are they shipping stuff back to the warehouse (i.e. will it be showing up online any time soon)?

  92. Hi Alexis - great blog! I've been reading it for a few months and often wonder what age groups all of the great JCAs fall into. Just out of curiosity, and likely seeing who JCrew should or already is targetting with their clothing line - wouldn't it be an interesting poll question?

  94. Is it just me or do the Alessia peep toe pumps look like shoes a grandmother would wear, especially the pastel colors? Sorry, but these shoes look so geriatric, esp. the spearmint and grey colors.

  95. The 50% ended last night at our local store.

  96. OT,but is anyone else having issues with cabochons falling off their bracelets. I bought the storybook charm bracelet in December and finally used it for a dinner party. Three hours later, I noticed a freakin' cabochon was gone. This is the second time this has happened to one of my bracelets that has cabochons. Ironically, I wear their costume jewelry for short bursts, not everyday usage. WTH?

  97. I would bet that if the FS sale items are no longer in stores and since all 50% off items were redlined that they are headed to the Clearance center in VA. I assume they wouldn't sell marked ticket items on the website. I was pretty tired of the Winter FS anyway so I am not so sad to see it go away!! Yeah Spring:)

  98. Has anyone noticed this new cardi on the website? I think it's kind of cute in the sherbert color. I don't think I saw this in the new arrivals section.

  100. OT 'How to fire your personal shopper'

My personal shopper is someone who I see socially on a regular basis (our husbands golf and ski together, we are not close). Tonight was the last straw when she announced coyly that I have been keeping the economy afloat - in front of our guests at our Super Bowl party. I have several B&M stores from which I can shop - I happened to wander into the one in which she works and somehow became her client - my mistake. I am uncomfortable that she knows exactly how much I spend because she gets a list of the rewards card recipients (and amount, I think) every quarter. She always calls to let me know I am 'on her rewards list' and that I need to come in to spend the money. I also believe she can look up my name and see exactly what I have bought. Are there any associates on this blog who can tell me how much information about the customer is available to JCrew staff, and how I can keep my quarterly rewards private? I have no problem telling her that I need to separate our business and social relationships (especially after tonite); I am just concerned that she will still have access to my information. How private is our purchasing information? Does it bother anyone else that JCrew stores get a quarterly list of the customers in their area with a rewards card?

  101. anon @ 11:11 - i know how you feel. one of the last times i went to one of my b&m's my personal shopped told me I buy too much. how offensive is that? am i not helping her paycheck at the end of the day?
the next time i went in as soon as i walked in the door i saw one SA scurry over to the other SA and literally point and whisper about me. and i just turned and said "you guys aren't too subtle talking about me like that" ... rather just shop online...

  102. Every time I go in to my local B&M (there's only one within an hours drive), I repeatedly hear some version of, "Oh, you're back AGAIN?!?". Often, this is from my PS and/or the store mgr. Um, YES, I am. And you're on commission, so WHAT'S YOUR POINT? Anywho, that's what I feel like saying. Why can't they say, "Welcome back! We're so glad you're here to help our bottom line". :)

  103. I have absolutely no idea what's with JC. Do they provide no training whatsoever on acceptable customer service 101 to their employees? Many of them have attitude problems. Just an example here -

I moved here from Europe a month ago and I am still using my passport to get around. I was returning a few things that do not fit me to the store. The associate asked for the reasons of return. I said one of them is too big and another one is too small. She gave me this look as if I was stupid to not know my own size. I was already not very happy about her attitude. And since one of them I lost my receipt, I was asked for my ID. I presented my passport then I was asked for a state ID in a suspicious manner. The associate then asked for my address and specifically which floor I am on (not even the US customs requires such details at the airport and no retailers ever asked for this).

Whenever anyone mentions JC is very generous on their staff package and this makes me angrier. So they get all the perks for not doing their job right?

  107. Anon with the nosy and revealing PS, I would take her aside and explain that her behaviour is inappropriate and unprofessional. Tell her that it should stop immediately or you will file a complaint. Then get another PS.

For the JCAs having issues with SAs, take your complaint to the store manager/director and if the manager does not respond, or is acting the same, take to corporate. Same with your PS.

I don't know what the privacy laws are in the U.S. (I'm Canadian) but you should find out and complain if they are not followed to the letter. In Canada, if stores made your personal info available to every employee, people would definitely complain.

  108. Has anyone seen the Crocodile jacket in person? Wondering if the buttons look as cheap as they do online. I know it says online only item but I have seen online only items in store before. Thanks.

  109. It's too bad that some of these SAs and PSs aren't quite clueing in on how to best service their clients. I know some sales people like to get "chummy" right away, and I kind of look at it as akin to a first date - please get to know me first before making assumptions.

I *think* part of the reason why PSs know the amount on the rewards cards is presumably to better for an actual personal shopper shopping experience. If a PS knows that you spent $X within a quarter, there's a guess as to your average dollar amount per visit....$5X by relative comparison probably means that you buy higher ticket items/non-sale items. It's all conjecture, but *if* you make an appointment, in addition to items you are most interested in, I'm sure they would accessorize or add pieces accordingly, based on spending history.

However, I see absolutely no reason why a customer should be "called out" about their spending - in *any* situation! That's completely tacky...I think it's safe to say that if the personalities don't click, it's time to find a new SA or PS.
