J.Crew's Final Sale (Online & In Stores)

As many of you have noticed, including Anon at 4:49 AM (in this post), there is no new promotion for J.Crew today. I was actually expecting to see one. With so many promotions in the past two months, I think I have been "trained" to anticipate another offer for today. ;) Instead, J.Crew announces on their main page (click here), that the Final Sale is going on.

Incidentally, as many of you have mentioned in previous posts, several stores are carrying an additional 30% off their sale (which also seems to be final). At least the additional percent off is pretty nice! :) (Although, it's not clear how long the additional percent off will last.)

What are your thoughts on when another offer might be arriving? (Do you think another promo will happen soon?) Will you shop online or shop in-stores (to take advantage of the additional 30% off)?

  1. My BM doesn't have much inventory at all right now. Resort wear, which I'm not really interested in just yet. My on line cart is full though; there are still fall/winter things I'd buy if the promotion is right. I need to be tempted with 30% off and no shipping!! Otherwise, it's a no go for me.

  2. Ditto for me. the stores are cleaned out but online has at least 10 items I really want to buy. Ever since JINGLE and HOHOHO I have the willpower to hold out. I too need at least 20% off and free shipping to make a purchase. All other stores are having great online promotions, why not Jcrew?

    ReplyDelete
  3. no incentives from JCrew is good my wallet. I would have been tempted with a 30% off and NS.

  4. The only thing that will make me buy online final sale is a further reduction in prices and/or at least 30% off with free shipping. Otherwise, the deals in other similar stores are just fabulous and I am passing on JCrew....they need to keep up with the rest of the stores offers....

  5. I am sticking to my guns and not buying ANYTHING on final sale. Plus, no really good offers is making my resolution even easier....

  6. ITA, maybe 30% off sale + NS, but, I'm kind of shopped out. The BM had addl 30% off , but, really picked over. I got some great stuff at Macy's. 50% off their coats + addl % off.

  7. I was also surprised there wasn't a new online promotion this morning. I just don't understand the strategy of not offering customers an incentive to shop, especially when all other retailers are.

    ReplyDelete
  8. So I guess they are back to updating the site at 4 or 5 in the morning?

There were a couple of things that showed completely sold out yesterday and now this morning I can tell they restocked but I missed my sizes yet again. *groan*

    ReplyDelete
  9. I might bite if there were an additional percentage this morning. I agree with FFM; it's kind of surprising given all the other incentives retailers are offering right now. I'd definitely buy the things in my cart with an extra percentage, but am tapped out unless the promotion is truly fabulous.

  10. I would buy more from Jcrew if they would do something about their shipping charges. They are ridiculous!!! I almost purchased the Taj necklace the other day and just could not do it because the shipping was over $10 for one little necklace. They really must think about doing a flat charge for all orders.
Question: I just discovered 3 holes in one of my cambridge cables from last season. I handwash all my sweaters. Can the holes be repaired? how?

  11. For those of us maxed-out/shopped-out on the FS, now pacing impatiently, I take heart from the prediction on the spring collection:

"Springtime at J.Crew was all about contrasts and closet-raiding. Blazers were slouchy and tailored in the men’s wear tradition, while vintage-inspired jacquards and diaphanous details came out of grandmother’s wardrobe."

This may be a GREAT time to prepare! If we're going to see men's tailoring, slouchy, and simple colors, now's the time to raid our grandmother's, great aunt's, neighbor's old jewelry, silk flowers, and folk art pins. Bunches of violets, multi-colored rhinestone pins, pop-art men's silk ties with pearl tie pins, will provide burst of individualized art and color. There's nothing like active Hunting & Gathering while waiting . . .

    ReplyDelete
  13. Professor,

I won't need to shop at all.....I have all that stuff already...my grandmother was one stylish lady and my mom, sister and I raided her closets this past summer....gorgeous stuff from clothes to jewelry. Looking at JCrew jewelry makes me laugh...cheap crap really...who would buy it??? Look at vintage and second hand stores for truly beautiful pieces. I am lucky to have my grandmother's stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Anon: We have jobs, but if we have rich husbands are you insinuate, we won't be here discussing discounts and promo codes.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yeah, I'm not ordering without at least 30%. J.Crew really isn't on the ball here - other stores are all offering much better deals.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I was told by a SA that they do markdowns in the stores on Tuesday nights for Wednesday opening. I am wondering if we will see a new online promo mid week? I have 18 items in my shopping cart just waiting for 30% + Free shipping!

  17. How can a blazer be both slouchy *and* tailored? I associate slouchy with unstructured, not tailored.

Either way, I don't care for slouchy.

I'm envious! You are RIGHT--the jewelry JCrew & other retailers is offering is often (not always) not the quality or imagination of what we could find at the thrifts shops, antique stores, consignment stores (all of which are reducing their prices drastically BTW and need the business).

Anonymous at 9.33: I do have a job, but it doesn't pay that well [any version of teaching does not, per se, pay well]. I'm in the category of J.Crew addicts/appreciators who give up other things [a lot] for Abundance of J.Crew.

A great thread would be, "What do YOU give up to feed your J.Crew addiction?"

Winks to all Hunters & Gatherers. It's in our DNA.

  19. I'm guessing there will be a bigger promotion (30% off with or without free ship) probably on Wednesday. It will be marketed along the lines of the "New Year".

At least when I order or buy from BR or Gap, they give me an awesome coupon starting Jan. 5th for their sping preview. I believe my one time Gap coupon is for 35% off full price with my Gap/Banana card starting Jan. 5th. Bet Mickey wouldn't do that!!! LOL!

  20. Yup, I have a job. I'm an engineer and my job has fortunately not been affected by the economy. I'm not married. I buy many things at full price when I want them, don't worry too much about the shipping, never carry a balance on any of my credit cards. Thanks for asking.

You are thrice-blessed; wearing the stories of your wonderful female relatives!

    For all of us:
I feel connected to all the women who were gifted, or who scrimped and saved, to buy jewelry and silk flowers and scarves to brighten their lives decades ago. So, when I see these objects now lying in cabinets or hung behind counters in shops for sale--well, I find it enormously sad. I like to "free" them and resurrect the joy with which they were orginally given and worn.

Objects, I think, take on some of the emotion and energies of the people who wore them. [And before you question my common sense, I am a scientist, and there is reason to believe that all objects at the molecular level are changed by the things around them, so there. Wink.]

RESURRECT some woman's jewelry, silk flowers, pins, from days of yore! Jenna gives us the canvas on which to display them. A most Excellent Canvas, at that. The Astrids & Ecoles love to display Treasures of Another Age.

  26. I'm sure another promo is coming soon. Maybe JCrew just needs time to restock returns from the stores on the website instead of getting hammered by orders constantly. ;)

I was able to get a number of much-desired items that had sold out at full price, on FS + 20% off. The shipping pretty much took care of the 20% discount but the items were significantly reduced and more importantly, they have now SHIPPED! Persistence pays off.

Thanks also to all the JCAs who have provided great advice. It is really helpful to know the quality and fit are as expected, when purchasing on FS.

  27. Sadly I couldn't stop myself this morning when I saw the Candy tee in tulip, Dream tie neck cardi in graphite and Dream v neck cardi in eggplant reappear in my sizes after I missed them repeatedly before. Keeping my fingers crossed that they actually do exist and ship as ordered. :)

  31. as a xmas gift, my bf said I could choose any dress I wanted (yay!), but I am going to wait a bit for the sale frenzy to die down. I've been eyeing the cashmere audrey dress, but sizes and availability keep disappearing (right now says it's sold out). A few others keep appearing and disappearing. :/ I have to order online/red phone b/c I need petite, so I can't try much on in-store, anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't see the draw. I agree with ladolcevita in the first post: JC needs to offer an additional discount and free shipping!

    ReplyDelete
  33. yes, I agree. I'm not interested in any sale stuff at the current prices, plus the usual ridiculous shipping prices. Every other retailer I like is offering me incentives, so I'll stick with them.

  34. Professor,

I often feel like objects also take on the "feel" of the person who made them as well.....

Also, when you mentioned scarves...I have about 10 beautiful ones from my grandmother as well...I have some JCrew ones that just sit and I have never used but my grandmothers...use all the time.

I need to get her earrings with the screw on backs "made over" into pierced ones as my sister said this can be done...

  36. Professor,

P.S. I would like to learn more about how objects change at the molecular level...take on the energy of the person wearing items...do you have any articles to refer me to?

Also, thrift stores are great for the environment...rebuying used goods instead of buying new...my sister got me into the stores and I was hooked...I used to be totally against "used goods" but quickly changed my mind after seeing all her great finds!

  38. dani california - The holes in your sweaters may be able to be repaired, depending on how large they are and whether you can find a good reweaver. The woman who does my alterations will also do this, and she's saved some of my sweaters from snag and moth holes. I'd suggest you ask around in your area about reweaving - your dry cleaners my have suggestions, or if you have someone for alterations, he/she might have ideas if not able to take care of it. Good luck!

A fair number of people who post to this blog run a balance on their credit cards and pay interest on all of these J. Crew purchases.

    ReplyDelete
  41. None of the current items are worth the tag they carry. They should release the second portion of their spring line already.

    ReplyDelete
  42. They're asking too much right now. Often nice styles and wonderful fabric, but at the end of the day, all the clothes are made in China or similar, and they're not worth $100-300 per article. I got a few bargains before Christmas with free shipping and 30%. But I can't afford anything more than that. Plus, final sale for items that can't be tried on first is ridiculous. At the most, they could limit it to exchanges, but no exchanges at all? Commercial insanity.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I believe we have seen the best of the sales with HOHOHO and Turkey, the prime objective there was to move inventory since JC buyers misjudged the economy and purchased too much inventory. Once the inventory adjusts to the demand the sales will unfortunately level off.

Right now there is not a lot of inventory left unless there is a boatload of returns there is no incentive for JC to offer deeper discounts. Purchasing something on FS that I have not seen before is too risky, I cannot afford to waste money for something that is going to sit in my closet.

  44. Off topic question about Rose Chiffon Tee:

I bought a Medium Rose Chiffon tee on ebay. I normally wear Medium in all J. Crew graphic tees, and never have to size up. When I lay this tee on top of other Mediums, it is visibly smaller. I've compared it to other ringspun tees with matching tags where "Medium" and "100% cotton" are written in cursive (Seize Il Giorno, Beaded dog tee, etc) and it isn't the same size. Has anyone else noticed, or is the shirt I got off ebay shrunken? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hi Argyle -

It's possible the shirt might be a bit smaller than some of your other mediums, but then again the "medium" moniker seems to vary from shirt to shirt (I've noticed this in differing tee styles myself).

I also purchased the Rose Chiffon Tee from eBay, but mine fit true to size, maybe even a tad bit roomy for being a small. Haven't tried washing it yet (I'm afraid I'll ruin it - so it's sitting in a heap until I can figure out what to do with it) - hopefully it won't shrink!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I am waiting for 20% and free shipping or 30% off. J. Crew's shipping charges are so high it is hard to bring myself to order sometimes. Also, it would cost me more to buy certain things now than before Christmas and that's a no go for me. I did get some great deals in the store, so I am happy about that.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The rose chiffon tee runs very small. I am always a small or even extra-small in Jcrew, but had to get a medium in that shirt and it is smaller than some of my smalls.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Argyle I share your ebay buying pain. I bought the Ocelot cardi off Ebay in a small & it fits tight/cropped:(

I'm not sure if it ran small to begin with or I got an odd one.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It may just be the shirt - I've ranged from small all the way to large in j.crew's t-shirts because of different cuts. Also I know that if you have say 5 small t-shirts all of the same kind, or jeans for that matter, the size can still vary because of when the material was cut on the machine.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I will probably be the one who single handedly increases J Crew's inventory. I bought a ton of things with the 30% off and free shipping. Mainly stuff that I had been watching all season only to get it and not like it. Or in more cases the fit was wrong. Has anyone noticed how much their sizing seems to be off? It is pretty frustrating when you always order an XS and you order 14 xs sweaters and only one fits properly. Most of the items went back or are going back.

    ReplyDelete
  51. J.Crew has got to be about the only store with HIGHER prices AFTER Christmas than before :-(

    ReplyDelete
  52. I agree with Anon that some of the prices in the final sale have actually gone up. What is that all about?

    ReplyDelete
  53. I am wearing a cashmere cardi I got for Christmas for the second time. It is pilling like mad and even shedding some of the pills around my desk. Disgusting.

That is the last J.Crew cashmere I will ever ask for or buy myself. What a POS.

  60. i love how the homepage and the sale page both say that final sale is the "sale we've been waiting for!" i think i can safely say that not too many of us were too excited about it, especially not waiting for it with bated breath :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. The menswear online this season has been pitiful. A lot of the outerwear has been sold out for a long time in several sizes. I tried to order some items for DH this Christmas and could barely find anything available. I hope they improve their mens inventory in 2009.

    ReplyDelete
  62. jbird:

LOL. Me too - I had about 17 pieces all waiting since Christmas Eve. Only an item or 2 has disappeared. . . .

    ReplyDelete
  63. This is the first year in 6 years that I did not buy something from JCrew AFTER Christmas. Their sale is just really bad...I got an email from JJill with 40% off and free shipping on their already reduced sale prices....I bought a ton of stuff....they got my money for the first time in 2 years...sorry JCrew...your loss...your prices and final sale...suck rocks!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Joangee - I have noticed that lately their sizing is pretty inconsistent, especially with their sweaters, mainly cardigans. I have been an XS for years and years, and all of a sudden the XS's are too tight in the bust area! Mind you, my old J.Crew XS cardigans still fit like a dream! So, I have been ordering a S in cardigans, and an XS in everything else, with my fingers crossed that they will fit. Frustrating!

    ReplyDelete
  65. To Argyle 1:50 PM, I am a ebay reseller. What I found was rose tees are actually a bit larger than some other ringspun tees are. I only sold a couple of rose tees, so my conclusion is only based on limited comparisons. However, one thing I am pretty sure is rose tees are not as well made as other ringspun graphic tees.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I agree with ebay reseller that the rose tee is not as well made. It was not the same after washing even though I washed it in a pillowcase inside out on delicate and flat dried. I disagree that it is bigger than other similar tee's though, it is for sure smaller on me.

  68. this is kinda OT but does anyone know the fit for the snow-leopard shirtdress? i was able to track down a 2 but with the store being 300 miles away and the final sale...i'm not too sure about it. i usually wear a 0 and im rather petite, 5'2. i imagine its supposed to be generous..

    thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I agree with ladolcevita ... I bought a ton with the JINGLE code for 30% plus free shipping. Before that I had not bought anything online for months, and I haven't bought anything since. I am especially not buying now with the final sale. J.Crew should just release their new stuff already :P

    ReplyDelete
  70. J.crew should release their new stuff, but they should also do better discounts on their old stuff, and get on the flat-rate shipping bandwagon with the other retailers. Until they do, they're not getting my $$.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I got home from work to find my latest JCrew delivery. I was so excited until I tried the stuff on - everything seems to be fitting large, which is really odd because the last delivery things fit fine and I am ordering more of the same styles of skirts and pants.

My husband thinks it is funny that I seem to have lost weight during the holidays. God, I hope I'm not sick or something.... :( Please let it be JCrew's radial sizing mistakes.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I agree with everyone here, I'm pretty much done until there is either A)a new promotion, or B)a release of new spring items. I've bought very little from JC in the past month. The only thing I've purchased in the last two weeks is a pair of broken in chino shorts that I stalked for awhile and finally got in 32 for $23.99.

I actually bought some items from RalphLauren.com the other day that were on sale + 30% additional off. There were some great deals to be had there.

  74. Sulilove,

I ordered a snow leopard shirtdress and think it runs a little small. I ordered a 4p when I saw it pop up online. I'm usually a 0p on top and 2-4p on bottom. The top is slightly loose and the bottom fits nicely. I was surprised and pleasantly happy it fit. I have big hips for my size, and the dress fit my hips and is slightly loose everywhere else, but it looks fine. I usually order a 0 or 2p in dresses but the 4p fit me. If you are not as curvy, it might be looser on you. It is a-line cut on the bottom. The regular will probably be knee length on you. I'm 5'3" and the petite is about 2 inches above the knee. I actually didn't find it to be generous. I think 4p was actually the size I needed. I really like it!

  75. I know this has already been asked but I don't remember the answer.

I am still waiting for it to go down in price and then I'd be willing to buy it FS.

  77. I stopped in my b&m today and asked if they would honor the $39.99 website price on the portland cardigan in black (it's on a special "promotion" in store). The manager did give me that price--with the extra 30% and my teacher discount, it came to 23.00 and change, which is great. I may go back and get one for my mom, too. It's pretty nice, basic, and something I know I'll get a lot of use out of.

  78. If anyone is looking for Spectator Peep Toes, I just noticed some on a high display in San Francisco Westfield Center: the ones I could reach were size 9 Graphite. They also had Dusty Rose and Rust. If you call and need to describe the location: they are up on shelves on a Column right by the sale section on the right side of the store (facing into the store). They are WAY high and I never noticed them until today. Also saw size 9 lulu in pink. All the other shoes seem to have disappeared.

    Final Sale:
They still have alot of pink licorice candy tee's, the champagne candy tee with the green oval embellishment, & a few of the other random candy tee's @ $29.99 + addl 30% off. They also have the sweet ruffle tops & Smock-stitch tissue tanks for $19.99 + add'l 30% off. Smock-stitch tanks are super cute & I sized down to xs. Nice for a layering piece & you could probably wear it alone in the summer. There was alot more random fs items...the basic, old stuff that's been haunting the store for the past few months.

    Resort Wear/Spring Wear
I saw a cute spring dress with a tank top style with wide band under the bust, and the material over the bust is shirred. The dress is solid pink & there was a solid tangerine color. Also, belts in the same pink but pink & white. Very cute with a cardi over it for spring.

Holding out for more spring items... :)

  86. I just got my shipping confirmation for an order I placed yesterday. First of all....kuddos to JC for shipping within 24 hours AND for shipping ALL my items...YAY!!! Secondly, I noticed that they only specified that two of my four FS items were non-returnable. Has anyone else noticed this? I bought the velvet ecole and the herringbone Teagan ruffle blouse in peony and they are not specified as being FS (not that I'm complaining). Strange....

  87. Jcrew has certainly improved its processing time. However, still 1/3of my packages have missing items.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I am so ready for new arrivals!!! I saw where BethL said there weren't many new arrivals in the new catalog, which is really disappointing. I'm ready for entirely new stuff!

For those of you who have seen the new catalog, are there any items that are worthwhile?

    ReplyDelete
  89. Someone mentioned 1/3 of their packages have missing items. I, for the first time, this holiday season had 3 orders with missing items, but the missing items still appeared on the packing slip as if they were in the shipment. The items never came up as cancelled. I had to call each time and ask for credits. Does anyone know what is causing this?

  90. I've got a question:

I returned a golden roses skirt that came in a box (not a bag with my order number marked) along with a few other things from a different order.

I forgot to put the receipt for the skirt in the box with the other returns. I just found the receipt and called JC telling the CS that I had returned the skirt but unfortunately I have no record of it (and neither do they.) They told me that there was nothing they could do about it since they have no record and I have no record. $198 dollars!!!!

Should I dispute it with my credit card or should I pursue this through CS??

    What do y'all think???

    ReplyDelete
  91. Up A Creek -

Your return shipping label should have your return address somewhere on it, so J. Crew should be able to either a) look you up in the system and find the order number or b) send it back to you. Plus, they have your other return that should enable them to identify you. Surely they can do SOMETHING. Maybe call back and talk with someone else and see if that person can be more helpful?

    ReplyDelete
  92. I didn't use the return shipping label from the receipt from the skirt, but the receipt from the other order that I returned with the skirt. Evidentally, they opened the return, gave me credit for everything that was returned from the other order, but not for the skirt that did not come with a bag with an order #, or the receipt that I left out of the box.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Agreed -- if you returned other items, they should have a record of the return itself. And surely someone in receiving put a note that there was an extra item in there!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Up A Creek- J.Crew doesn't require a receipt for returns, and nowhere does it say that orders must be returned separately. Therefore, as long as the skirt still had tags, they should have processed the return. Even with the correct return shipping label, there is never proof of which items from that order were included in your return- it's whatever is in the box, isn't it? If the warehouse made a mistake, you shouldn't have to pay for it.

  95. After a bunch of returns, I have a $200 credit that is burning a hole in my pocket. I have been eyeing the phoebe metallic houndstooth jacket...should I buy it using the red phone (30% off $99) or just hang on until the spring stuff comes out?

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday :)

  96. I don't see why JCrew doesn't offer another promotion, especially when BR and Gap have extra % off promos. I guess this helps my decision not to shop for clothes in January that much easier!

  97. JCrew Princess,

I do not know why there are missing items. I never experienced the problem, although heard of, in past years. Now I am used to items missing from my packages. I did not feel that frustrated any more. Open packages, find item missing, call right away, ask for waiving the shipping. That became a routine. If I am lucky, sometimes I can capture the items when they are put back on the website.

In addition, I do not know whether this is intentional or just a mistake. I found jcrew recycling updates. They put up exciting updates everyday. You order, they cancel. One dress, I ordered five times on past five straight days. It got canceled everytime. That doesn't just happen to one item. Sometimes, items were shipped only on the forth time I ordered them. Sometime, they were never shipped, but kept appearing on the web. I start to suspect that jcrew doing this to make their sale section look full and exciting.

I do not know what is going on with Jcrew.

  98. JaneEsq, I don't know about you but I'm tired of all the winter items! I say hold out for new spring items.

  99. I finally got someone in CS who was willing to credit the skirt that I returned. Thank god for nice people.

  100. Up A Creek -

That is great news! I'm glad someone was finally reasonable and helpful for you!

  101. JaneEsq:

I tried the Phoebe metallic houndstooth on and it looked a little grandma-ish or something Leona Helmsley would wear (think older, graying woman with short, severe hair that costs about $300 an inch to cut and color).

I think if you're taller (for some reason) or have the attitude to pull it off, you can make it look young. I couldn't do it.

  103. Joangee,
What 14 items did you buy and what store are you returning them to?

    TIA

  104. Out of my most recent orders:

    - one pkg had a crewcut shirt in it instead of a woman's shirt. Called JC & they credited me the shirt, no problems.

    - another order was del'd w/all 7 items I ordered, even though I had received emails that four items were cancelled. JC only charged my cc for 3 items. Two days later I received only 3 items again, same order #, etc., but was not charged at all. Called JC & they requested I return them, which I am going to do tomorrow.

Seems like their shipping dept. is really screwed up. They said it was due to the volume this time of year but I know better from reading this blog. I wonder how many folks aren't honest & JC is losing $ because of their poor shipping dept.

  105. Well, today's promotion is free shipping on orders of $150 or more. No additional discount and everything I have in my cart is the same price. Meh, I'll pass.

  106. J Crew will not be releasing new stuff like they have done in previous seasons, due to the ecomonic times. Did anyone see that 2000 malls in the US will be closing in 2009 because the landlord cannot meet their payments?

  107. Thanks for pulling me off the ledge guys. I have removed the winter stuff from my cart and am holding onto my credit until springtime... :)

  108. To note re: my post--I didn't see many new arrivals BUT I was in a big hurry when I looked at the catalog in store. Maybe I missed something. I hope so! I would be excited to see lots of new stuff too. :-)

  109. Speaking of the metallic pheobe houndstooth, I was crazy enough to buy it when it was FP (partly because the salesgirls said it was cute on me but later I am convinced they say that to everybody) but my husband hated it so I returned it the same day.

After I returned it, I still could not keep my eyes off it and I bought it in B&M on sale for $149.99. After much struggle attempting to transform it into a modern piece with no avail, I gave up and returned it again!

Perhaps I am possessed - I still have it in my shopping cart right now...seriously, what am I thinking? It is like the memory of that perfect lover I could never quite forget. Haha.

To sum it up, as another esq. puts it, it is hard to pull it off.
