J.Crew's Pretty, Little, Ruffle Cardigan

As FabulousFloridaMommy pointed out in the post "Love It or Leave It: Dream Tie Cardigan", J.Crew sent an email about their "pretty, little, ruffle" cardigan shown here: the Tartine cardigan (Item 96527; $88.00). The sweater is super cute, with its "silk chiffon ruffle trim at neck and hem" and comes in fun colors like "deep persimmon" in addition to the basics like black and navy. However, I prefer if it hit a bit lower than the hip. Also, not a fan at all that this is "dry clean" only.

What do you think of this email promotion? Do you like the Tartine cardigan? Do you own the cardigan (and if you do, what is your review of the cardigan)?

  1. I find that many of j.crew's sweaters hit high on the hip (and I don't have a long torso). I also prefer that they hit lower, so it doesn't look like you shrunk them by accident. I think this particular sweater is cute and plan to buy one when it gets marked down. I think $88 is an OK price, but not a "steal" as they say. It's not like it's made of cashmere.

  2. I LOVE this sweater. In fact, I paid full price (minus 15%), which I never do. I got the bright rhubarb, the matching tank, and I sized down to make it more fitted. I plan to button one button under the bust. There are many color pants that I can wear with this color, too. I will definitely get more once they go on sale.

  3. I agree, I don't like sweaters that have to be dry cleaned. I even wash my cashmeres with Woolite and they come out fine. Maybe these could also be hand-washed as many garments put that use and care tag saying "dry clean only" to protect themselves. I may try one of the Tartine pullovers if/when they go on sale.

  4. I love this sweater except for the ruffles.
math teacher: Is bright rhubarb a red or a bright pink?

    ReplyDelete
  5. anon @ 12:45: it's a really hard color to describe. I would call it a pinky red (or a red-pink). It's really pretty. If you've seen any of their geranium color in person, it's very similar to that.

  6. I love the Tartine but I have a feeling that it may be a tad overrated. First, I wish it were a little longer (as seen in the model simply she wasn't standing up straight). Second, if they haven't lost my package (along with my enthusiasm), I might be more obsessed. After all, I ordered it in 4 colors full-price.

I love the snow but will think about returning the other colors. Wait for it to be marked down, and we'll talk again.

I have yet to receive my lost/replaced persimmon but after looking at the rhubarb (long story), I'm wondering if this shade of red is flattering on me. It looks a bit faded somehow. Not quite pinkish as I would have liked. I have a geranium sweater and it looks different from the rhubarb. Maybe I got a defective piece?

    ReplyDelete
  7. math teacher: Thanks for your description, it makes me what to order something in that color. I haven't seen the geranium color in person, the closest store to me is 4 hrs away.

    ReplyDelete
  8. vivian: I held my bright rhubarb sweater next to my geranium sweater, and they were not a match, but close. I haven't tried on the tie cardigan yet, so I might change my mind about wanting more of the tartine if the dream tie is as good as lots say.

  9. I think this is such a pretty sweater, but I agree that it is not a "steal" at $88 as they say. Anyone have an opinion as to it's appropriateness for work? I work in a CPA firm, and am wondering if it is too "cutesy" and not enough professional. Although there was a pick in the latest catalog that showed a model wearing the black oen with a wook gap tan suiting skirt that I thought looked great.

What are peoples thoughts about this selling out vs going on sale at a later date?

    ReplyDelete
  10. math teacher: You gotta go try the dream tie!!!!!!!

Not sure why my rhubarb is so muddy. And it looks at least 3 shades lighter than my geranium.

    ReplyDelete
  11. beth: I have heard on this blog, that some believe that this will sell well in stores.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oops typing too fast - that should have read "a pic (as in picture) in the latest catalog with a model wearing the black one with a wool gab suiting skirt"

    ReplyDelete
  13. vivian: maybe it's the lighting in my room. I'll compare them in sunlight. And, the next time I visit the b&m, I am going to try it on (if they still have one in my size). I meant to try it on last week, but forgot until I was walking out the door. :) I'm taking a list for my next trip!

    ReplyDelete
  14. beth: I love the style of the black tartine with a tan skirt in the catalog too. It's not itchy so wearing it as a shirt instead of a cardi can work. Wish it's not dry clean only though.

    ReplyDelete
  15. vivian: okay, in bright SC sunlight, the geranium is a shade darker and a little redder. But that's just my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  16. math teacher: What else is on your list? I like to live vicariously...

beth: That wool skirt is another fab piece. So flattering (and such a steal at $30!).

    ReplyDelete
  17. If the deep persimmon is orangey, then I'll keep the rhubarb. I have too many reds (the Baird McNutt Georgia jacket arrived this morning in flame too - although I also got the flax and navy cos the prices are too wonderful), but I think this is one of the cardis that stand out in pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  18. vivian - good to know about the non-itchiness - thanks! and i totally agree - the wool skirt is so darn cute. i may just have to buy that and the black tartine. do you own the skirt? is it true to size? for $30 you must mean the $49.99 sale price less 40%?

    ReplyDelete
  19. vivian: well, I'm always hoping that the argyle vest will show up in my b&m. And, the denim pencil, matchstick cords, andrea jacket, watercolor skirt, jacinda jacket, floral belle skirt (can't think of it's name), and the favorite fit chinos b/c they're suppose to be a new fit. Oh, and some items that are in the lookbook that aren't in the catalog or available online. See why I need a list? :) I also need to try on something in the honey glaze to see if I like that color on me.

    ReplyDelete
  20. math teacher: Oops. I mean "stand out in red."

    ReplyDelete
  21. math teacher: That's a fab list!!! When are you going to the store?
I have the denim skirt (had to size down) but I returned the cord skirt in honey glaze - it's lumpy regardless of size.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm not a fan. I saw it on other people and it looks fine on them. But I am really not a ruffle person. Its the reason I don't like the fiona and a number of other clothing items... Its just not my style.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Actually the crewneck one could be cute now that I reevaluate... but I am not a fan of the cardigan.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't like this sweater as much as I thought I would...I actually prefer the Jackie and Dream Tie over this one. I think this one is too boxy for my body type, but do LOVE all the colors it comes in. :) I will consider purchasing the Heather Mushroom when it gets marked down, but won't pay the $88 for it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. beth: I first fell in love with the Tartine when I saw that outfit idea.

That's right - 40% off. I got them in three colors - nice staple pieces for a working wardrobe. I mean pencil skirts are, uhm, pencil skirts but this one is cut beautifully and drapes like a dream. It's true to size. I had to size down in the pencil denim skirt and the cord skirt but in the wool gabardine skirt. Only bummer, the rye color is sold out in my size.

    ReplyDelete
  26. vivian: I'm not sure if I'll head down this Saturday, or wait a while. I just called down there and was told that the vest would probably come in at the end of the month. So, I may wait until next Saturday. I tried on the pencil skirt, but it felt a little big, so I will probably try on that and a size smaller to compare.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I lusted after the merino wool ruffle one, finally got it on sale but have to say, I don't wear it that much, I do think it hits a little shrunken...I like this one in theory (ruffles, cardi) but haven't seen it live. I agree w/ others, $88, not a steal!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Little off topic, but does anyone have a polyvore with the Domino Cropped jacket? I am awaiting it's arrival and I still haven't quite decided what to wear with it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I do agree that $88 isn't a steal. But if you can get it with the 20% off and you love it, I wouldn't wait. I've waited for items before and then been unhappy when they're gone and not in my closet. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. OT: I just received my August J.Crew catalog in the mail...first glance it looks pretty much the same as the one we just had with the Fall Collection...I'll let you know later if I see anything new in it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm going to try to hit SF today and see if they have it now. I'll give a full report. ;-)

I don't know if $88 is a steal, but if I wait and my colors are gone, I will regret it. I can't decide if they are promoting this because they had a ton manufactured (in that case we wait for sale!) or if they want to move it fast and make way for other items. It's very cute, though, and I love the ruffles. I should be banned from purchasing anything else w/the detail on it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Not a ruffle fan here, either, with the exception of the Elizabeth Halter.

My fave sweater is the Jackie. I also love almost all the Merino wool sweaters that J Crew puts out. They don't pill! Not a big fan of Dream or Cashmere. They make my nose itch.

  33. How are you all getting these emails? I have bought from the website numerous times and have signed up for their email list multiple times, using two different addresses (in case they had a problem with the first one) and I have never gotten an email.

Are these emails connected with the online sign-up or are you getting these some other way?

    ReplyDelete
  34. allison, I noticed I stopped getting my regular emails after the 'upgrade'. I signed up again through their website, but the emails didn't start popping up till after I placed a phone order and the cs rep asked if I wanted to be notified of promotions. I also gave them my university email for the student discount, and emails have started being sent there again. Maybe you could try calling in and ask to be placed on the email list?

    ReplyDelete
  35. sorry for being off topic, but how reliable is the 'order status' function on this new website? Do they update it regularly or is the info there not necessarily reflective of the actual status of the order?

Have things been going smoothly for people who've placed orders in the past few days? Canadian shoppers, how are things going for you?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I bought the ruffle sweater this summer in geranium and navy-- -and the only difference with this sweater and the Tartine is the ruffle is chiffon vs. wool-- so I do not forsee myself paying full price.... I will catch this on sale..... Like FFM, I am eyeing Heather Mushroom!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Saf: I placed an order online this weekend for the first time. I dont know if it will actually come or not but that is the most I can tell you. If I were you and concerned I would call into CS and ask them. They can tell you more than we can.

    ReplyDelete
  38. saf: There is a delay for up to a day, last week I spoke to a CS rep about an order I placed over 3 weeks ago, and she said it shipped while the order status said open. It took a day after that to show shipped. I am supposed to be getting that parcel today but the UPS driver is late!

I am a Canadian shopper, my second order that I placed online last Thurs. still hasn't shipped, so we will see. The new system is slower than before in every way from shipping to billing.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I really like ruffles, so I thought I would like this sweater at first, but there are too many drawbacks that I will only purchase this if I can get a good deal. I don't like how short it is since I'm pretty tall, dry clean only is annoying, and I don't like how the sleeves are three-quarters length. The colors are pretty, but I'd rather go for a jackie or a merino v-neck with crystal buttons.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'd love to get this but I know I will be disappointed with it looking shrunken (in a bad way) on me :-P
Wish they made sweaters in tall, even if it was 2 or 3 styles.

    ReplyDelete
  41. anon at 2:32, thanks a lot, I was just wondering what peoples experiences have been. When I phoned in my order the reps said things were back to normal with some delays but I didn't really get a straight answer. The old system was so much faster (sigh). I hope you get your orders soon!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I like it a lot but I don't think I could pull it off. :) I do love the outfit you referenced too, Beth! I've been thinking about getting the gab skirts for that same reason. I have a ton of dark colored skirts and really wanted the rye, though, and it's sold out in my size. :(

    ReplyDelete
  43. When is the next 20% off code going to be? I have to buy a suit and want to wait for it. Any ideas????

    ReplyDelete
  44. OT: The August catalog is exactly the same except the Lulu Peep Toes are now on the cover.

    ReplyDelete
  45. LP: It ends August 14th

FFM: What a waste of money to resend the same catalog. They cant be hurting that much if they want to send out the same thing twice!

    ReplyDelete
  46. blumre: I was surprised that it was the same catalog but with a different cover. Why do they do that? I agree that it does seem a waste of money.

    ReplyDelete
  47. blumre and math teacher: it really IS a waste of money to send out the exact same catalog/different cover...not to mention it's a TOTAL tease...I was SO looking forward to seeing more new stuff, and then it ends up being the same exact merchandise. :(

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love ruffles and was planning on buying the maize to pair with royal blue. But my store did not have it yet and if it is boxy I will pass unless it goes to 50% off

    ReplyDelete
  49. ffm: I know, I was so excited on the way back from the mailbox. I thought my wish list is going to get longer!

shannee: try sizing down. That's what I did and I love the shape. Especially if you plan to wear it as a cardigan. I just button one button under the chest and instant shape! And, I think maize and royal blue would be stunning together.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I don't get them sending out the same catalog with a different cover either. Waste of money and trees. We should write them and tell them to be more environmentally responsible!

By the way, what exactly is the Look Book? If it's different than the catalog, why am I not getting one? I am a J. Crew cardholder, dammit!! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  51. math teacher: Sizing is sometimes so crazy. It's great that women's fashions has so many options but other times not so great! For example, I have in my closet no less than 6 plain white button down shirts, each serving some different purpose that makes me keep them around. My fiancee looks at my closet and just shakes his head. :) And sometimes I agree - why can't I just have one that serves every purpose! But it seems like there's always a reason to have more than one - not / too dressy, hits too low / high on hips, sleeve length is too short / long, collar ... the list just goes on and on. :)

  52. I am so frustrated I needed a place to vent, sorry if this is OT.

I just received my order that took 3 1/2 weeks to arrive, I am a Canadian shopper and I am so frustrated with J Crew. The invoice with the package is different from what they charged my cc in the amount of $25.56, the CS was at a loss to give me an explanation why, she asked me 3 x to repeat my question, I asked to speak to someone who knows more about Canadian shipping she ignored my request, and yes I wasn't being rude. I ended up hanging up. This order was phoned in, there was no mention of additional charges to come.

Also,I have noticed that the quality is not the same on the slub cotton tee, and the yoga hoodie. The zipper in the hoodie is flimsy not at all like to yoga jacket. I am not going to return the items because there was no bottom half on the invoice it was torn off, and the parcel gets lost in the mail.

However the perfect fit tees are wonderful.

    Thanks for letting me vent.

    ReplyDelete
  53. anon @ 3:54 - that's interesting that your smart label was torn off, too - your items were full price, right? we were talking about this in another post.

    ReplyDelete
  54. silverlining: Yes full price, and when I called back and spoke to another CS, and she could not explain why the bottom half is missing, and why my packing slip amount is different from the invoice showing on their system.

They are still having problems, what a mess!

    ReplyDelete
  55. maybe the smartlabel was torn off b/c you are in Canada and it is only for U.S. customers?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Can anyone tell me -- can you wear this in warm weather? (the Tartine) Very curious! I live in the South and am wary to buy it. Obviously no one would wear this in the midst of a heatwave, but for office wear etc.--I do work in a/c but it's not supercold a/c.

    ReplyDelete
  57. anon @4:44: I am in Florida (of course) and I personally wear cardigans all the time...even in Summer. The Tartine isn't that heavy and works for warmer climates, IMO. :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. OT: I just received my 3 Silky Jersey Tanks that were ordered from the b&m last Wednesday...there was NO tracking number or email and the order still shows as OPEN...go figure...just glad they came. :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I appreciate ruffles, and think they're very, very cute, while at the same time acknowledging that they're not representative of my personal style. I really like them on other people, though.

Also, a short, boxy sweater won't work on my 5'10" long torso'd frame. I think these would look adorable on a more petite person.

    ReplyDelete
  60. anon at 3:54, I'm so sorry to hear about the mess up! Try calling again and hopefully you will get a nicer, more knowledgeable rep. That's happened to me, sometimes I just say I have to call back because I'm hoping to speak to someone else. I'm also a Canadian shopper and the smart label is only for US orders I think that's why the bottom half of the invoice is ripped off (as the anon 4:38 pointed out). Hope things get sorted out soon!

    ReplyDelete
  61. anon 6:18: What their new improved computer system is showing the total amount of the order is different than what the invoice is showing. The sad part of this is they are not catching on to their mistake, and this glitch could result in further delays to future orders.

    ReplyDelete
  62. anon at 6:24, that doesn't sound good at all, there seemed to be far fewer complaints on this blog than before, so it seemed like things were improving...guess not. Especially I guess for orders from 3 weeks back (when they should've shut down). The discrepancies you got in your invoice are unacceptable.

It's too bad about the quality also, hopefully you got a good mark down on them.

    ReplyDelete
  63. l love this sweater, but can't even consider fall items yet because I live in Atlanta and wouldn't be able to wear any of the new collection until at least late October/early November. I did try an online order today and I'm crossing my fingers that everything turns up at my door in the next two weeks :) I was able to snag a cherry blossom print Frances top and two of the slub cotton tunics, so I'll be oh so happy if it actually arrives!

For those of you who have the slub cotton tunics, do they fit true to size? Or, do they run big? I ordered a small and I'm hoping that it fits since it's final sale.

    ReplyDelete
  64. their website is whacked out right now. all the photos in the main page are flashy so fast it's obnoxious. also, you can't click on order status or contact us, it shows an error. what's going on?

    ReplyDelete
  65. So I got my Ecole and I adore it. I couldnt use both the 20% off card and my educators discount. So I just used to 20% and I got the jacket for $123 including tax. I can't complain about that! :)

I also saw a new bag that looks like the leather tabloid tote from last year. It comes in what looks like a patent leather (not sure if it actually leather or not)! I ADORE IT! I really like the metallic color! And this year it even has two from pockets and its lined. FABULOUS for only $150.

The Perfect patent leather flats are gorgeous and the leather is soft and supple (usual for patent). So that was very exciting.

OT Banana Republic is selling a tweed jacket that looked fabulous on me. I didn't buy it but I am thinking about it. Its $148 and I don't have any discounts at banana :( It is called the
    Bird's-eye blazer

    ReplyDelete
  66. dawn: I am normally a medium in J Crew tops and a large in their fitted tees. I sized down for this after trying it on. I could have worn a medium and it not looked bad, but the small had a little less volume. I hope it works for you, I have been waiting for this top to get marked down b/c I like it so much.

    ReplyDelete
  67. blumre: I was able to use both the 20% and the 15% last week. Maybe call cs and see if they'll credit you. Oh, for consistent policies! :)

    ReplyDelete
  68. It would be nice but I am not going to fret about it. The jacket was worth it. But my mom said she hated it on me :( So we will see what MMiller says when he gets home tonight and if he doesnt like it I wont keep it. My mom's fashion taste is impeccable. It kind of bummed me out that she didn't like it. :( I was so excited earlier today and then my mom just slashed all of it. However, she did like the jacket at BR and the tote so maybe I will go without a velevet jacket this year and get the tweed one from BR. I just hate shopping at BR and the people at Jcrew are so sweet!

    ReplyDelete
  69. blumre: Did she still hate it when you explained about adding another hook and eye? I'm sorry, it's hard when someone squashes your excitement. I love the argyle vest, and my sister can't figure out why! It's kind of a bummer, but I ultimately have to be happy. Although swapping one jacket for one jacket plus a bag wouldn't be too bad. :)

    ReplyDelete
  70. blumre: So sorry about your mom's reaction...it's always a bummer when those closest to you don't enjoy your enthusiasm for the piece you have been desiring and agonizing over...I'm sure it looks really pretty on you! Btw...the BR jacket is really cute, too! :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. ABOUT DRY CLEANING -

I was talking to a SA in the Carmel, CA store and she said that you can HAND WASH your sweaters (unless its cashmere obviously) and let them dry flat and they will be fine. If the tag says, 'dry clean' that means you can hand wash it. If it says, 'dry clean ONLY' then its dry clean only!

    ReplyDelete
  72. blumre: I think the BR jacket is great.

    ReplyDelete
  73. blumre-sorry the excitement was quelled by your mom! I stopped asking my mom ages ago, helps she lives about 2 hours away! Anyway, got something in the mail today for BR 30 anniversary they are offering 15% off $250 or more...I think I got it b/c I am a card holder, but let me see if I can pass it on...enabler I am. Has anyone seen their new jewelry? Pretty funky. Even though their clothes are far better at Jcrew, at least at BR they don't give you such a run around on prices!

    ReplyDelete
  74. caw: I was looking at their jewelry online yesterday and liked some of it. Of course, I may feel differently in person, but it looks, well you're right, funky. I like the ombre online, I wonder how it translates in person?

    ReplyDelete
  75. yes, I agree math teacher, completely, I find that their jewels are so different on line vs. in person...actually, their clothes too. I never buy BR on line and want to buy jcrew every day on line. Funny. I'll check it out over coming days...I do like a statement necklace but who knows what this looks like.

    ReplyDelete
  76. caw: I'm with you, I've never bought BR online. But I will buy JC online. I want to stop in BR next time I'm out to check out some of their items, and I will definitely take a look at their jewelry.

    ReplyDelete
  77. blumre - Maybe you can just wear the jacket around the house for an hour or two to get your fill of it and then return it. I may be doing the same w/my wool Fiona since my mom walked all up and down on it. I still love mine, but I'll never hear the end of it when she sees me in it.

Also -- I saw the adorable tote and I forgot to try it on in front of the mirror. I saw the black but can't recall the other colors. So for everyone else -- I called the store just now and it comes in black, metallic gold, yellow and kelly green. All patent colors and it's $150. I forgot to ask if it was leather or manmade.

    ReplyDelete
  78. yea, I will too. the BR is next to the jcrew, usually I spend too much time (and $) in jcrew that I am shopped out, but I will wander in there....

    ReplyDelete
  79. blumre: That sucks so much about your mom! I don't ever listen to what my mom says when it comes to clothing, mostly because everything I pick is "too revealing." :) True story: It took me until high school to wear my first tank top and it wasn't one of those form-fitting spaghetti strap camisole ones. It was basically a sleeveless top. And my mom FREAKED OUT, calling it indecent. :) So ... this is why I never listen to what my mom says about my fashion style. :)

    ReplyDelete
  80. That BR jacket looks so cute. I walked through there on Sunday and saw so many things I wanted, included a trench. Too bad we had already hit jcrew, so dd and dh were shopped out. :(
I've never bought from BR before, how is the quality? Similar to jcrew or closer to the gap?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Gigiogca: Yes the tote comes in S ilvery color (actually gold but looks silver), blue (gorgeous), Yellow (not too bright kind of muted actually-- but not a honey glaze) and black.

    IT LOOKED FABULOUS ON

BR has a nylon tote in the store that looked pretty darn good too and it was only $48 bucks. Its not online, so sadly I donthave a picture to show you. But I liked it.

Yea I think i am going to go with the BR jacket instead. MMiller said the Jacket was eh. And now looking at it I can see what my mom said. I know she is right but it bums me out.

Melanie: OH that sucks... and see my mom always calls me a prude because she says I am too covered up!

Shanee: some br stuff is great some is really shoddy... its hit or miss. the jackets and suits are normally pretty good. I dont find their sweaters to be anything spectacular though. I do like their pants but not their denim.

I am very bummed that no one likes the ecole. THe bella didnt work for me last year and I really wanted a velvet jacket... maybe I am just not meant to own one :(

    ReplyDelete
  82. blumre- I'm going to look at the silvery gold & the black tomorrow or Wed.

I can't decide between the moss or papaya Joelle. Help! Either would look good w/a long gold necklace. I want to wear it under a cardigan in addition to wearing it alone. Anyone...anyone? Enablers...I am only getting one so help me pick. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  83. gigiofca-i have the moss, joelle blouse, i wasn't sure about it at first but love it! you can pair it under anything. I think the papaya to me is more limited in terms of colors, esp in the fall you can do the moss with oranges, navy, khaki, ivory, it looks good under cardis, jackets, of course you could get both ;)

    ReplyDelete
  84. blumre, sad for you about the ecole, esp after all the efforst and lies! Guess it looks better on polyvore, I bet it will go on sale, it seems more people don't like it than do. Maybe their next round will have something interesting...

    ReplyDelete
  85. Hi Gang! This is OT but check out this shirt. Look familiar????

    ReplyDelete
  86. blumre: I completely feel for you on the ecole! I know that no matter how much I tell myself "I don't care what anyone says, I'm keeping it." Once my mom says one negative thing, it always goes back! Their veto power is undeniable...unfortunately. (even at 35 years old, after 10 years of marriage and two children...) ;)

    ReplyDelete
  87. weab: I have really been amazed over the past couple of seasons by how many pieces at ON look like copies of J. Crew items. However they are never made as well, look as good, or hold up like JC's pieces.

  88. gigiofca: I would say unless you have red hair go with the papaya. Its such a lovely color that is nearly universally flattering. The moss is fine... but its a little boring, no? I mean you can get moss anytime... I also think the papaya will brighten up any outfit in the fall or winter and its a piece that will transition beautifully.

  89. I like this sweater. Whoever wrote that they liked it except for the ruffles - thanks for the laugh.

The reason why j.crew sends out catalogs that are similar if not exactly like what they have already sent out is because they are hoping the different cover works to pull in people who may have overlooked the first one that came in the mail. Proven strategy that works, but not appreciated by people like us who are looking for new items each time.

    Cheers.

  90. This sweater looks adorable! I love all the comments, I am definitely going to try it!! I LOVE RUFFLES!!!!!!! The more ruffles, the better, I say!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Weab: I know its awful!!! I mean I would have kept it just to spite my mother and I would have worn it and probably still looked fabulous in it. But the fact that MMiller didn't like it was the deciding factor.

I worked to get this Jacket too! But I am bring it back to a different store I dont want anyone there to be upset. I'll take it back in Greenwich or Westfarms this weekend.

OT: I got the linen-silk beach sweater (the one with no buttons). I ADORE IT! Its soooooo perfect!!! I mean I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

I also promised I would review the overdyed cropped jeans. They do not fit the same way the regular denim did. The description is the same the but the fit for the regular denim is a little tighter and the leg is a little shorter. So those are going back. I just wasn't as thrilled with them and frankly it looks like I got a defective pair. Why can't they cut their pants at a consistent length?

  92. Weab & anonymous: ON also has an item that looks like a long-sleeved version of the antique fleece shawl collar cardigan. I never shop there, but I had to go in store last weekend to try it on. Unfortunately, even at only $24.50, I could not justify buying it because the fit and quality were just that awful.

    ReplyDelete
  93. blumre: I love that you're taking it back at another location! I do the SAME thing! Btw, thanks for the review of the beach cardi. I am looking for a short sleeve navy cardi and this one just may fit the bill. (I'm also debating the pintucked one.)

ashley & anon: I completely agree with you on quality at ON. But for the price, sometimes I just can't resist. Even if it will only last me a few months/weeks and then gets thrown away, it's not that crushing. Also, I think it's funny that J.crew is getting knocked-off.

    ReplyDelete
  94. blumre: I too got the linen-silk beach cardi (it arrived today) and LOVE LOVE LOVE it! So comfortable and flattering!

I am waiting for my Ecole exchange and then I will make my final decision. I really do hope that it fits me well because I do LOVE it. I have to admit that when my mom gives the big NO to an outfit I always return it even if I love it. She has an incredible eye for fashion and I do respect that (even if I don't always want her opinion...lol).

I got the Jacinda sweater/jacket today in the Honey Glaze color. I think that this is a beautiful piece, but I don't like the way it lays in the back due to the pleating. I much prefer the Andrea's fit and the Honey Glaze seems much richer on the Andrea as well.

Got two more silky pleated tanks today (are you listening FFM?) because I totally love the way that they feel. YES, they run large on me, but under a sweater or jacket and tucked in they are just sumptuous.

Going back (in addition to the Jacinda) will be the Watercolor floral rosette blouse, Hammered silk tank, Lisa dress (love it, but mine has an uneven hem), plus a few more things that I am just too tired to remember. I'll continue my review in the morning when I can think again. :)

  95. blumre et. all: I'm not sure if you remember this comment, where I bemoaned the fact that my linen-silk v-neck sweaters became stretched beyond repair? Well, no need to worry about one of them now. I asked my fiancee to throw in a load of laundry. He scooped up a bunch of clothes from the floor, one of them being one of my linen-silk sweaters, without my noticing it. Well, let's just say that not only is it now wider than it is long, but when you shake it, stuff comes flying off. So when they say "dry clean" for that, I guess they mean it! Sad! :(

    ReplyDelete
  96. jcrewjunkie: What do you think of the fit for the silky pleated tanks? How does it fit on you? Where is it big for you like under the arms or all around? I'm thinking of getting a few with the great price, but I'm not sure about what size I am and I have to order it over the phone.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Blumre and others, your mother stories cracked me up! My mother never approves of anything I do unless it's something that she personally would do . . . but it's hard to ignore a mother's comment.

So, I never ask her opinion on anything and I change the subject if she gives it!

  98. Quick question, when we mention that a store is having an additional 40% off sale items and ask if a phone order price could be matched, does the item have to be in stock at that store to get the price match?

Also, (OT again, I'm so sorry!) has anyone tried the Hayden High Heels? Fits true to size? Comfortable?

    Many thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Anonymous@12:44, in my experience it's random.

I had two CSRs who wouldn't honor the reduction unless I was calling *from the store*, which is not very helpful when you're a web customer who's not near the store. I've been able to get adjustments where the item was in stock even if not in the precise color and size I wanted--in that case the CSR just had to confirm the price for the item number.

    ReplyDelete
  100. anon: I've gotten the 40% off on items that were never even available in the stores, catalog/web only items. Like, hex said, it's the luck of the draw.

    ReplyDelete
  101. If an item is on sale in the store but not online, will they honor the price for a web order? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  102. To Anonymous: Yes, if you order through red phones at stores. Otherwise, I am not sure.

  103. I went to SF and they did not have the Tartine in stock. The SA said it should arrive on 9/5. However, when I got to the register, the cashier said that he returned 2 of them earier in the day. He showed me the pullover version in the persimmon and silver. Bleh. They seemed awfully thin. I was expecting the Jackie weight/texture, but with ruffles. The weave of the silver one didn't seem to be completely in tact...had some stretched out areas that looked like holes. That said, it's really cute. I should have tried it on but I was tired.

go do the sweepstakes BR has on its webpage and they will give you a 15% off coupon code after you play.

Btw, for the ruffle freaks out there, you may like this top from BR. I ordered one in the purple and wore it today--it's awesome. Collar kind of reminds me of the bella.

    ReplyDelete
  106. hexicon: Exactly what I do. When she gives that admonishing look I always know what's coming. Bleh.

anon @ 12:08: The fit is billowy, but I think that once they are washed/dryed the fit will be perfect. I am pretty small at 5'4" and 100 pounds, but these do not overwhelm since I tuck them in. I am not getting them at a discount (don't live near a b&m store) but have still purchased 3 (weathered stone, honey glaze, and poppy). I just love the way they feel and they look wonderful under cardigans and jackets. :)

    ReplyDelete
  107. blumre: I can't remember...do you have a BR or GAP card? I have a code for 15% off $125 when you use one of them...you are more than welcome to have it. It is for one time use...let me know if you want it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  108. WOO Cass: you are full of good information! Thanks!

Jcrewjunkie: I know I am so excited to wear it today. Even if I do have a remote connect conference and no one will see me. I still want to wear it! I hope it doesnt stretch out . Also the silky tops sound awesome!

Melanie: OH NO Thats horrible! The knit on the linen-silk cardigans is much thicker than the V necks. They used a stronger yarn so I am hoping it will hold up.

OH Hexicon you poor thing! See my mom normally approves (unless she says I am being too prudish) so when she doesn't approve I kind of sit up and listen. I hate it! And its worse that she moved out this year so I moved in after grad school and she just stops by to pick up her mail on the way to her new beau's house. I haven't lived at home in 9 years, since I went to boarding school @ 16. And now its as if I get a free opinion-a-day give away! I must remember that I am saving $ and that is a beautiful thing! But oh goodness it sucks!

FFM: I don't have a card. I applied back when I was in college and then the card never showed up. They said I was approved. I should go find out what thats about b/c I know I was approved... they sent me a letter saying so, just no card. You get 20% off now for applying.

    THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP

  109. I just got an email from BR that offers 15% off $150 or more. That makes me feel so much better :D

THe jacket is 2 dollars under but I could totally figure out a way to spend 2 more dollars!

    ReplyDelete
  110. blumre: Is that without using the store card?

    ReplyDelete
  111. FFM: Yes! I know I am pretty stoked!

    ReplyDelete
  112. blumre: That's FABULOUS!!! Are you ordering today?

    ReplyDelete
  113. I'm going to go into the store this weekend. The coupon is good through the 1st of September! So I am going to take a day off from ordering! I have ordered something on every one of the last 7 days (pathetic). :( So yea I have pleanty of new things to keep me occupied until then ;)

    ReplyDelete
  114. FFM, Cass and everyone else: Thank you so much for your help and being willing to share your codes and information. You are all too sweet. Thanks :)

Now, why aren't BR sales as easy to predict as JCrew's? I would wait for the jacket to go on sale except at BR, you know it wont go on sale! Arg!

    ReplyDelete
  115. jcrewjunkie: Thanks for letting me know about the fit! I'm really leaning towards ordering two. Hopefully, I will be able to get a price match with FFM's store.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Blumre: I checked out the jacket at BR and I love it too ... I just got that 15% email, and I think I am going to go try on the jacket at the store and if I like it, I'm totally using that 15% coupon. Thanks for pointing the jacket out ;)

I also wanted everyone to know that I finally jumped on the Fiona bandwagon and got one off of eBay in Sweet Papaya. The prices are going down now, and when I saw one in my size I scooped it up. I have been on polyvore brainstorming outfits that will help me transition the papaya into fall. I have a couple, but this one is my favorite. How are you all going to transition your papaya Fionas?

    ReplyDelete
  117. ffm: I believe you have the Joelle cami and blouse. Is sizing about the same between the two?

    ReplyDelete
  118. daisy: Hi! I only have the Joelle Cami...the blouse was in two of my problem orders and never came. :( I have a size 0 in the cami, and I had ordered a 2 in the blouse, as others said it runs really big. I could even wear a -0 in the Cami if they made them...I feel they run big, as well. :)

  119. Hi everyone. My first post here since I became addicted last week.

I just received my Tartine cardigan in Rhubarb (before J.Crew sent me a shipment notice, but that is a story for a different day) and it's lovely! I'm having trouble deciding if it cute enough to justify the cost, especially since I don't believe I received my student discount, despite two phone calls to CS.

    Two questions:

    1. Has anyone done this successfully? I.e. calling CS after placing an online order to get the student discount? How do you get confirmation that the discount was applied?

    2. Does anyone find it weird that J.Crew describes most (if not all) of their cardigans as hitting at the hip, even when they are clearly different lengths?

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  120. Welcome neejay:

Yes You can and should be able to apply all discounts over the phone and I have done it many times.

Some do say high hip or low hip... but yea sometimes they can mean very different things. I dont know why

    ReplyDelete
  121. cass - Just saw the link to the BR ruffle blouse. That one's different since the ruffles are around a v-neck. Cute.

blumre - If I didn't say it, you have to get that jacket. They usually don't go on sale and if/when they do it won't be in your size. Truuust me. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  122. gigiofca: ENABLER ALERT lol ;D. I'm going this weekend. You people have no patience lol. I got your e-mail and I will reply in a few. I've got to work and you all are SOOOO distracting ;)

Cass yes, I dont know if i said it you have great taste the ruffle shirt is great.

  123. Just picked up the tartine in the rhubarb and the chocolate brown today in stores...i love this sweater and can't wait to wear it in the fall! Bought my normal size (L)...its not too short (not as short as the featherweight merino ruffle cardigan) but not long either....

    ReplyDelete
  124. I stopped by my b&m today and had no intention of liking or buying the tartine. When I saw it in the catalog, I thought it looked too much like the featherweight merino ruffle that I already have in orange. And I thought it was sort of blah. But when I saw it in person and tried it on, I thought it was SO cute!

The cut of the body is straighter and more flattering then the merino one from last year imo. I also didn't have any problem with the length of it but then again, I'm only 5'2.:) I ended up buying it in black. My store had it in heather flannel (gray) which isn't shown online. They didn't have the mushroom one yet but I would like to try it as well. (The deep persimmon is beautiful but I found the rhubarb to look a little washed out or "heathered").

    ReplyDelete
  125. Sorry to jump in late! I haven't seen the Tartine yet in person, but I just wanted to mention that the cardigan I love is the longer Featherweight Crystal Button Merino cardigan. I agree that I really need a longer length with my taller and pear shaped frame...this cardigan is so great--it can be worn with a belt or sleekly over a flowy top. I got the deep persimmon and it looks so great with darker jeans!

Just wanted to put in a plug for this cardigan!

    ReplyDelete
  126. jliz - I second your plug for the featherweight crystal button cardigan. I got gray. I'm considering the maize yellow as well. I am 5'2" and it works for me as well, so this sounds like a winner for all.

    ReplyDelete
  127. ITA about the crystal button merino cardigan, i bought this in 6 colours (black, snow, graphite, kelly green, deep persimmon and royal violet) so you can tell I really love this cardigan! Looks great over a pencil skirt for work, belted and even just buttoned up with a tee underneath with slouchy trousers. The length is amazing too, its not super long but really helps to make you look longer and leaner. I highly recomend it! And the glass buttons are just too cute! I especially like the black glass buttons i.e. on the graphite and the royal violet. I wish they made the snow cardigan with black glass buttons too :(

I also posted above re the Tartine - I bought the rhubarb and it is a heathered color, the colour code is HGE on the label. Its more pinky though. Looks very different from the website. I found the heathering toned down the vibrancy of the colour which was perfect for me b/c I bought this to wear to work....

    ReplyDelete
  128. ooh alexis can we do a product review on the glass button merino cardigan? I really think its universally flattering and perfect for both work or casual settings...
