JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I need help thinking of topper options for summer. It’s been an interesting transition from classroom to my role as a central office administrator. I’ve had to step up my game a bit. Where I’m really struggling is thinking about summer! I’ve always had summers off and now I’ll be working. What toppers would work with most dresses? Linen blazers? What if a blazer doesn’t work with a dress (I’m thinking of the button front striped dress - not sure if a blazer would look right with that dress). What other options am I not thinking about that will mix and match easily? Thanks for any advice!

    1. I wear a light cropped denim jacket over dresses often— dunno if that’s too casual for your setting, though

    2. I have several cropped length cotton cardigans that go with dresses well when a blazer is too formal. I also have several short collarless jackets (think Lady Jacket, but in a solid fabric) that work with some dresses. You can also do a moto-style jacket in twill or tweed (not leather). On the other end of length, a long sleeveless vest can add a smart looking layer. Or even a duster, but that might start getting a bit dramatic for the office.

    3. I like the cropped cardigan idea (cardigans in general). I forget about cardis because the ones I have are mostly very casual. Probably should invest in a few that are a bit dressier. Plus a few summer weight blazers when I need some more formal. Thanks everyone for chiming in!

    4. I started to type a comment earlier at work and got distracted...I agree with cardigans definitely and my go to over summer dresses are usually cotton blazers or a chambray blazer. I've usually found that if I'd wear a denim jacket a chambray blazer is a good swap if you can't do a denim jacket (I couldn't wear one to work up until recently) and personally I don't love linen blazers so I've gravitated to the cotton ones - Crew usually has a decent selection and I've found them on eBay (love the cotton Thompson and Campbell blazers) as well as BR.

  2. Posting here instead of reviews. I mentioned getting the two Everlane wide legcrops and Loving. I just received the Jcrew point sur wide leg crop to compare. THe size variations/proportions are subtle but make a big difference. I posted a side by side pic on IG @wearthislikethis.
Note that Ina posted the jeans yesterday and said they ran big on her. I found these pants a bit tight in the ivory color. I got 25tall. In skinny jeans I’m a 24 or 25 in other jeans and usually 0 in pants. Also the longer length on the Everlane is more flattering. I’m 5’6” and got the regular Everlane length, tall Jcrew length.

    1. I looked at the new insta, and I can see a real difference. Possible the Everlane would work for me, since my issue with the J Crew cropped pants was the narrow thighs.

    2. P, I got the 00 in both Everlane pants today and although they’re a little fitted at first, within a few minutes both feel comfortable. So I’m going with that.
I’m less crazy about the denim. The high rise skinny is too big and the mid rise is nice but I think I still need to size down. I got the deep indigo and it’s a jean that looks like it will wear in really well.

  3. Can anyone recommend a bra to wear with the SZ Blockprints™ for J.Crew tiered maxi dress? I love it and I want to keep it but I don't know what to do about the bra situation. I'm a 34DD and need to wear a bra. I hate strapless bras. Help me keep this dress! :D

    1. No idea if this actually works: http://www.skunkboyblog.com/2013/08/lets-talk-about-backless-dresses-and.html

    2. That does work. As does sewing cups in, but for smaller chested women. Of course you’ll need the bodice to be pretty fitted for this solution to work.

    3. @pbanos Thanks for sharing, what a great idea!
@cate I love this dress too!

    4. Suz Has, p banos, thank you both so much! I love these ideas and I'd never heard of them before. I'll have to see if the dress is fitted enough for one of these solutions to work. Thanks again!

  4. Sigh....it is snowing here. Not unheard of for late March, but it always seems to catch me by surprise. Stores are showing summer dresses, but even if the pavement dries up by Monday, there will still be snow piled high on the lawn and some icy patches here and there on the driveway. All this to say, April will be here but I’m not yet ready to bare my ankles for another week or two. I’m trying to come up with some combos that will feel and look like spring but still keep me warm. I’m thinking of styling my BR Logan fit denim with brocade sneakers for work. I have enough pants and don’t want to invest in wide-leg as I already have trouser-cut, boot-cut, and plenty of crop-kicks for when it gets a bit warmer. Any thoughts on full-length bootcut chinos with sneakers? To my eye it’s a similar look to the wide leg at the bottom, just more fitted through the thighs.
