JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I've been thinking aunt tall heeled boots this winter as I sold almost all my tall boots several years ago. I tend to wear heels when I dress up so didn't see the need for them, but now my skirts sit unworn. I bought the tall heeled black boots today and I realized aside from wearing them with a black skirt and sweater I'm not sure how to wear them.
I went to Pinterest and using the keywords everything that came up was really hoochie mama! They're not thigh high stilettos, they're block heeled tall boots. 😂
I'm hoping the shaft height works! They don't give that dimension, so if anyone has these booots let me know.

    3. Yes, but many longer skirts which I won't wear. I'll take a look though

    4. Sorry, I posted in the other thread, I am hoping I can wear it with my black mini skirts (a few inches above the knee) but I am not sure how else. I don't wear midi or maxi length skirts. I guess I can try them over skinny jeans which was my early 2000-2010ish uniform but then I generally wore more casual style Frye boots, these are a bit dressier.

    5. I realized I'm not sure how to wear these boots, aside from with a black skirt and sweater! I may need some suggestions. I don't wear midi or long skirts and haven't worn "dressy" boots in ages. Most of my Frye boots were chunky and more masculine. My uniform used to be skinny seven for all mankind or Jcrew jeans, usually a Jcrew blazer and tall (mostly flat or chunky heel) boots, but that's going back quite a few years.

    7. I know what you mean about image searching tall boots!

Would you ever do leggings and a cover-the-bum shirt? With your blacks skirts I think a button down or funnel neck would look good. If you ever wear white, a white button down with black jacket and short black skirt could be nice. A wrap or cape scarf over a tee as well.

    8. Hi Sarah, i wear skinny jeans/pants with shirts/sweaters/blazers but not leggings and tunics, not great for my shape. I do have lots of white button downs and a few ivory sweaters, could totally do a white shirt/black skirt and jacket/wrap.
I don't think I have this length bottom but I always liked tall boots with a shorter cropped pant, more like a "gaucho/culotte" below the knee, although that might be a little too Captain Hook, 😂

    9. Ok, I searched a bit more and found exactly what I was thinking, wide cropped pants over tall boots. Pants can be anywhere from a few inches above the ankle to just below the knee. It's kind of a 1970s inspired look that I actually like. I'll definitely try this with my wide jeans I just got, although they're a little long, and my cropped wide leg pants and a slouchy sweater. It's a really nice winter look.

    10. I have black Lautre Chose boots just like that. They are around 10 years old and I'm happy for any opportunity to wear them, they're such a classic. Also have a similar style with a "belt" around the ankle in dark green. My favorite way to wear them is with black tights, an aline skirt and a sweater. I have also worn them with a loose fitting vintage belted shirt dress and tights. Last year I spent a bit of time on Ebay searching for old J. Crew plaid skirts to wear them, but I was never sure about size and held off. I think that would look really sharp. When I was younger I wore them over my jeans, but that's not really my look anymore...I agree they are a great boot to have and hold on to, and I can see you rocking the proportions described above for fun!

    11. Yes, it's a bit different for me but I think it will be fun. Let's hope they ship. Last year I was so tempted to get the snakeskin version of these but reviews weren't great. I remember now I had a pair of Aldo tall laceup boots with sort of a brogue stitching. They were high heel and had a side zip. They looked GREAT over jeans. I seem to have lost them in my move somehow, or I gave them to my girls. They were very cool!

  2. OT, but there's no where else to put this - apparently, if you ruin a wool JC sweater ThredUp will take it!

    Size L, and it's 19" long.

    1. OMG. I don't like thred up because they don't provide descriptions and detailed pics. That's why I'd never sell with them. I have no idea how much they give compared to Poshmark but I prefer being able to control my own posts.

    2. Geez, I’d totally forgotten about ThredUp. I was really into browsing their site about a year ago but never made a purchase. I don’t recognize it, but I take it this sweater is badly shrunken?

    3. I see a lot of shrunken and felted sweaters on Poshmark, too, usually described as “excellent condition” or “like new.” Many Poshmark sellers (resellers) buy their merchandise from thrift stores rather than selling from their own closets. Thrift stores receive a lot of damaged donations, especially “the bins” Goodwill outlet stores that resellers favor. That’s why I’d never purchase a sweater from Poshmark without detailed measurements and clear photos.

    4. I think sweaters are the one thing I absolutely will never buy on any of those selling sites. Too easy to wind up with garbage.

  3. ThredUp is the worst, IMHO. I sent one package off, they sold them for great prices...and I got about 10%. I will never do that again. I was so angry I even sent them an email afterwards. They have zero transparency.
