This is definitely them throwing stuff at wall and seeing what sticks. Despite increased sales in this quarter, it doesn't look good for them.
Hmm. At first I thought this meant the end of all Factory stores, but then the article also says "The company will focus on growing its lower-cost "factory" business online and in stores." Hopefully this just means there will be no more Mercantile items disguising themselves as retail items on the main site, which would be a welcome change!

DeleteMercantile is the lowest of the low in terms of quality. Abysmal. I didn’t realize I was buying it on a couple of occasions - the sweater pilled immediately and the pants bagged out at the knee after ONE wear. Good riddance to Mercantile, please focus on the Retail brand!
DeleteOh. The WSJ article was much more clear: "According to the memo, J.Crew plans to focus on growth for its overall lower-priced outlet business, including in stores and on its website. The phaseout of Mercantile next spring and summer is meant to free up staff to work solely on the outlet business, which has 175 stores, currently including 42 Mercantile stores.

DeleteYes, I was in a factory store on Monday. I bought a hat reduced by 60%. Nothing else there for me since I am tall. Will not return.
DeleteIsn't a successful primary brand necesary before you open outlet stores? Just wondering...
