This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this
post) says it best, "You know, that thing you
bought because you love it and you keep pulling it
out and then putting it away without wearing it?"
Please
share your J.Crew item (either that you own or
are thinking about getting) that you would love help
creating an outfit with.
Also,
please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel
free to include links to your blog (where you
incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you
showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance!

Good morning, JCAs! I have a question about a stretched-out sweater. I live near a clearance center that has a lot of Ralph Lauren pieces on very deep discount (~90%). I'm interested in a metallic turtleneck, but the shoulders/armholes are stretched out by months on the hanger. It's a cotton/poly/modal/metallic blend. Do you think a gentle wash and reshaping could return it to its proper shape, or is it a hopeless case? I'm guessing the latter, but thought I'd post in case anyone has had success with a shopworn piece like this.
ReplyDeleteyes, absolutely it should rebound with a gentle wash and dry flat. I've also had luck with steamers reshaping stretched out threads.
DeleteThanks, Cass. Stretched out shoulders/armholes is probably one of the most common issues I see on sale racks everywhere, not just the clearance center. The sweater is only $10, so a small risk. However, since I’m doing so well with NoShopMarch I think I’ll wait a few more days.

DeleteShopgrrl - I've never reshaped a sweater but there are various instructions on the internet if you search "reshape stretched out sweater". This might be an interesting way to get some nice stuff at a great price.
DeleteNot quite the same thing (in fact, it's kind of the opposite situation) but it makes me think of one of my favorite bloggers (bluecollarredlipstick.com) who "rehabbed" and reshaped a (thrifted!) Smythe wool blazer that had shrunk (Jan 29, 2018 entry).
She has a very different style from me but that does not stop me from enjoying her blog. She is an amazing thrifter(who else can find Burberry at a thrift shop) and I have zero patience with thrifting.
This makes me then think about thedirectrice.com who I discovered through this website - another blogger I enjoy whose style is very different from mine.
@Toronto I'm also a big Directrice fan, she presents such a variety of ideas, and her writing is hilarious. And while I've seen bluecollaredlipstick before, I'd forgotten about her, so thanks for reminding me.
DeleteCan anyone recommend a good retailer to get some good quality linen blend v neck t shirts? JC used to make them but I don't see them anymore. I strongly prefer v neck, and normal fit, not cropped or with dropped shoulders. Willing to pay commensurate with quality. Thanks. :)
ReplyDeleteGap is currently offering 100% linen tees in a variety of colours, in a narrow scoop neck that has much the same effect as a vee. Everlane has some as well, in the basic neutrals. I’ve had luck in the past at Uniqlo also but it may be a bit early in the season for them.
Deletethanks will have a look at Gap and Everlane. Already checked Uniqlo, no dice.
DeleteI have a white v-neck 100% linen tee from Emerson Fry and I absolutely love it. It has a somewhat deeper v than most tees and the sleeves are elbow-length but it's by far the best white tee I've ever own. I would buy another but it's on the pricier side at $78, but most other tees don't compare in the quality and how well this one flatters.
ReplyDeletethank you :)
DeleteStyling the navy ruffle sweater and elephant pants -- both of which are on sale on the blog today.

Thanks, I've got my local store holding a pair of the elephant pants in my size.
DeleteThere are none on the website in 4T. Usually the store doesn't have talls, maybe they were a return.
I'm going to try them on after work today. Did they fit like the regular bi-stretch Marties?
Yes, I usually size up in the Marties. Seemed a little snugger than usual.
DeleteThanks! I did purchase the 4T 'Pachyderm' Marties. You are right, they may be a wee bit smaller than the cotton bi-stretch Marties. I thought my other Marties were, well, stretched. But I might have lost a little weight. Anyway, this pair fits me very well with no tight or baggy spots.
DeleteNow I'm thinking about which shoes will go well - I have silver loafers but don't know if that will be over the top. I also have black loafers, a navy pumps. When it gets warmer I have sandals as an option.
