J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Not a review, but a very bad experience at a retail location yesterday. I ordered the Lea flats in black. I tried the Ceecee's before, and there's too much toe cleavage, so I wanted to try these out.

    I did a store pickup just in case I didn't like them - I could return them right away. Well, I got there and picked up my order. The sales associate was nice to me. I went over to the couch, tried them on, and immediately didn't like them. They felt like slippers and I could see the outline of all of my toes.

    Anyway, I turned around and got back in line to return them. I got the same sales associate, and he asked me loudly, "You didn't like them?" I told him that they were too small. He started the return process by yanking them out of my hand. He tossed the bag on the counter behind me and when he was done he shoved the receipt into my face. No "have a nice day, thank you for shopping here." I was shocked. But instead of making a scene, I turned around and left. That will be my LAST time shopping at Jcrew. I work too hard to give my money to a company that treats their customers like that. Customers should not be shamed or treated like crap because they want to return an item.

    2. TeacherStyle, that's horrible. I get that "ship to store" is probably annoying to many SAs but I completely agree w Suz ... report the guy to the store manager and corporate. They can do better.

    3. I understand TS' reluctance to speak out. I would never want to be the reason someone loses her/his job, especially in today's economy. SAs have heroically found things for me, one saintly woman brought me 15 sheepskin vests to try on in the hopes of finding one without the creases on the left front, and they accept my returns without comment, except the occasional "this is so cute, i'm sorry it didn't work for you." So it stands to reason that repeated long shifts of retail martyrdom are going to get to some people.

      As a parent, my instinct is to correct bad manners. As one whose college days and nights were spent waiting on people who for some reason had not come into the store to shop, but to get a drink of water, to find fault and criticize, to use the bathroom, to misplace their children, to sit down and rest and eat crumbly snacks in the shoe department - well, I can understand a moment or two of temperment. However, give me a snippy response to a request for a catalog, an explanation of fabric content, or the presentation of my student i.d. (never too old to learn), and you just might get a very very evil stare.

    6. @TeacherStyle, I'm sorry this happened to you! Using store pick-up sounds like a smart way to try on shoes.

      When something like this happens to me I find it helpful to remember that we are all people without the label of customer, store clerk etc. I don't know what is going on with the person who was just rude to me: maybe someone just gave them a hard time, maybe they are dealing with some family crisis, maybe they are really tired. No matter, I don't take their behavior toward me personally. I smile and try to think of something kind to say with the thought that at least I can inject a bit of positivity that may be helpful to the person. At the very least, I feel better.

      Having worked in retail, I can relate to what @wellfedfred wrote. Most customers are wonderful, but I've witnessed and experienced some amazingly hurtful behavior on the part of a few customers.

    7. Didn't mean to imply the SA should be fired! Coached, yes. Called out to be more aware of behavior that results in a lost customer and harm to the brand, also yes.

      J Crew can't afford to screw up the great customer service that is its only competitive advantage these days, or the resulting store closings and business failure would surely result in many lost SA jobs.

    8. I see these events as teachable opportunities. I know...you want to be mad...but if all we can do is get mad, stomp off and never try to find a way to instruct, change or transform a situation...well, no one learns or benefits. I've mentioned before that when I was young I worked in the public and in retail and I was humiliated, shamed and hurt by management and customers alike without ever being given any consideration that I just didn't know the right way to do something. Our companies and corporations are often completely operated by young workers who don't have the life experiences they need to deal with all situations. I feel it's my obligation as an adult to help guide and shape the people who work in the stores I like to shop in and make them the best they can be. If we don't do this as a collective, we will never have the kind of workforce we want. I hope this gives you something to consider to help see this event in a different light.

  2. Hey all, if you see the chambray jumpsuit (G1657) anywhere could you please let me know? I'm looking for a 6 or 8. Typical of me to wait until something is sold out to decide I *need* it. Thank you all:). I'm a long time reader, very, very rare poster.

  3. I received the Italian Cashmere Tie Neck today. I ordered it because I thought it would pair so well with the collection houndstooth heels from last fall. It does, but the problem is that the sweater is so short! I'm afraid I went a size up the v-neck would be too low. So back it goes.

    I also received the straw circle cross-body. I don't have an issue with my phone, but after using it the bottom hinges and lining drove me slightly nuts. If you don't close it just so the very cute striped lining will poke out the sides. The purse garnered many compliments though.

    1. And it's cashmere, which in my experience usually shrinks up shorter no matter how carefully I wash it.

    3. I bought this sweater because it is v much "me," but I'm glad I purchased it on sale and with a gift card because it is a little "off" for full price. If anyone is curious, the stripe is definitely red--an orange-y poppy red rather than lipstick or true red, but it's not orange. I found the V-neck to be too low but was able to adjust it by tightening the bow. Wearing the bow too tight might result in puckers if you are small-busted but the resulting crease actually worked like a dart on my girls. I likewise found the sweater to be quite short, limiting it to skirts. (Since I have a small waist I can't find high-waisted jeans to fit. Any tips on brands to try?) Finally, the sweater reeked of chemicals, a mothball-like smell. I haven't had that problem with JC before.

  4. I got the herringbone SeaVees on a popback last week. They are super cute and fit TTS, unlike the Comme des Garcons x Converse low-tops that I also got last week, which run .5 size big. I'm debating over whether to keep both - the CDGs are double the price of the SeaVees, but the SeaVees are made of wool which I didn't realize when I ordered. Does anyone have the herringbone SeaVees and can speak to whether your feet get insanely warm in them? Seems like a weird design thing to design a spring sneaker with cold-weather fabric.

    1. I have the herringbone Seaveas and they are from last year fall,so they are a more fall-ish look. I never get warm in them even though i luve where it doesnt really get cold. HTH

    2. @Ina thanks! I forgot these were a popback so it makes sense they're from a colder season. I always associate low top cloth sneakers with warm weather since i"m in the northeast.

  5. I wore my made in the shade tee this weekend (the beige with white writing) and I found the letter stitching on the inside of the shirt to be very rough and itchy. Has anyone else had this experience with the tee? Someone else I know who has it said they didn't have an issue so curious if I have a bum tee. I tried a medium on in the store and didn't have any issues but ended up ordering a small which is what I needed. It's such a cute tee- lightweight for summer and fun but I don't want to have to wear a tank under it.

    1. As noted, I didn't have any problem with mine - I tried the M, the S and the XS and went with the XS which means it fits fairly close as you prob saw in my IG pic. I am terribly sensitive to scratchiness in any form (can feel a cat hair inside my bra lol TMI) so I am wondering if you have received a defective item, Anne! I tried the yellow version when it came out and also didn't notice any issues. Switch it out if you can is my advice.

  7. I've been busy picking up items from the sale rack along with the odd full priced (but on promo) item.

    G5968 the Maui tee in dark flamingo; for those of us not fluent in Jcrewese that means a medium to dark pink, think pepto bismol. Fits true if slightly fitted and the map of Maui on the back is great. I'm a Maui addict; been there six times so this was a must buy.

    G4233 striped sweatshirt in grey. Lighter grey with a nice stripe, no ribbing at the cuffs or waist. Waist has slight tennis tails. Fits a little looser than I'd like but it's 100% cotton and the dryer will fix that.

    F4065 garment dyed denim in dark green in the 770 fit. Killer deal for $32, down from around north of $160, nice fit, slim, straight and the dark or fatigue green is very on trend.

    G2581 Wallace and Barnes garment dyed selvedge chino pant. Great heavy fabric, straight slim cut (like 770) button fly and a great blue, not indigo but more like a faded, washed navy. Less than 1/2 price and I'd pay full pop, they're that good.

    G1510 antique wash chino pant another great pair of casual go tos, but the only downside is they are ever so slightly too long in the rise (IMO) I prefer a lower rise pant. They aren't high rise, just a little more than I'm used to. Great fabric, nice faded camel color.

    Best of the lot was the Wallace and Barnes pant. Button fly, solid construction and they were offered in some great colors. Watch for pop backs, they are that good.

    1. Sounds like you're really pleased with what you purchased. As a female customer, I wish I could purchase as much and be as satisfied. I was just in the store the other day and I asked the SA about Frank leaving since I thought Menswear was actually doing well. She confirmed that Menswear and Crewcuts are doing well so she doesn't know why Frank left. I actually purchased a men's madras shirt from the sale rack for myself.
