JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I bought the purple watercolor garden shell/blouse (Item 23843) on clearance in 2010. Every time I clean out my closet, I always pause at this top. I love it. But I never wear it. It looks nice with jeans, but I'd like to wear it to work. What color bottoms and shoes would you pair it with? I have an arsenal of pencil skirts but the only one I can think to put it with is green and it leaves me unsure about shoe and belt color.
    Thanks!

    1. I've never seen it in person, but it looks like it would pair nicely with gray and gold/ochre. Actually, in the pic with the model the colors are washed out. The other pic is different and I see the green (which I thought was gray) and the orangey red which I thought was more of a yellow-orange. I think I'd still try it with gray or other neutrals and I still think it would work with gold shoes. Of course you could always try white too.

    2. I think navy cropped skinny pants and metallic sandals would look good... Especially for warmer weather.

    3. Not super creative, but I would pair it with white pants or skirt and nude/camel sandals for work

    4. Thank you these are all really helpful suggestions!

    5. I had this pencil skirt and always struggled with it. But the few times I wore it I think I did mint colored shoes. Maybe try blush or light pink on bottom too?

  3. Hi, everyone

I would like to try wearing button up shirts under my sleeveless sheath dresses and under my Tippi sweaters. Over time the shirt rides up and then it starts to "bunch" up and adjustments are a pain requiring a trip to the ladies' room. Any advice/tips on how to keep the shirt from riding up and "bunching" throughout the day? For the Tippi, if I am wearing the shirt with pants or a skirt, I could of course tuck it in, but sometimes I would like to wear it with the shirt out (and visible at the bottom). For the dress, I guess if I wore hosiery I could tuck it into my hosiery but I (thankfully) gave up pantyhose a long time ago as part of my everyday wear.

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Toronto Modern - for sheath dresses try a bodysuit like the Thomas Mason Button Up Bodysuit.

    2. I tie a small sash under my bust and this seems to help a lot!

    3. This might sound crazy but I'd try a tube type "body slimmer" or "waist trainer." I actually have one from a chiropractor from when I had lower back issues. There are tighter, corset types and neoprene or spandex ones. I'd do the type that has Velcro so you can keep it fitted enough to be comfortable. They sell them all over but there are inexpensive versions on Amazon and eBay if you want to give it a shot for under $10.

    4. I wear button up shirts under dresses a lot and if it's summer and I'm not wearing tights, I'll sometimes tuck into Spanx-type shorts (or less compressing versions). Sounds odd but I find it comfortable to not have the shirt come untucked or bunch up.

    5. Wear a stretchy tank top on top of the button up! Works like a charm!

  4. Ladies, check out the sale section this morning. There were popbacks of quite a few older collection items (last spring and further) at good prices and in several sizes! Usually I never find good popbacks in my size, but I found 4 things to try since it's not FS!

    1. Also if you just sort the sale section by "collection" not all of it comes up. You have to go through the pages unfortunately.

    2. Boy, you weren't kidding about the popbacks! The gingham moto jacket is back in a few sizes, haven't seen that one in awhile, and surprisingly, it hasn't been marked down any further in at least 6-8 months. I nearly bought it in-store last June for ~$110 CAD if I recall correctly, and it's never hit that price again. The pricing algorithms really puzzle me at times. A piece from a year ago is marked down by barely 25%, and meanwhile this season's Ruffle Chambray pants or the Fringey shift dress are discounted by 50%. It makes me very curious about the world of retail economics and big data.
I saw a popback of the Ecru Denim jacket, and highly recommend this piece.

    3. I got the collection tricolor sequin skirt, I never even remembered seeing it the first time around, but it was $495 orignally and with the markdown and 30% I got it for $245. We'll see if it fits. I didn't care for the $148 silver sequin skirt they put out over the holidays--I thought it was extremely poor quality when compared to the Collection sequin pieces. I also picked up the $395 wool-silk skirt with the paneled hem (sort of like carwash?) for $126 and the $550 organza embellished dress for $105 (may be too short though). It's all returnable so I figured it was worth a shot.

    4. Cads, let us know how those work out. Collection pop a Ks are so fun. Thanks for the alert! I was too late to catch most things, but I found one piece that excites me.

  5. I recapped a few of my favorite April outfits on my blog including the polka dot tweed dress, silk foulard pants and the ornate floral tie waist skirt.

  6. Carrying on with last week's Factory Basketweave skirt in Green Multi styling ideas, I bought a pair of Cole Haan Zerogrand Wingtip Oxfords in Cabernet. Although the uppers are oxford styling, the sole is pure running shoe. I tried them on with the skirt and a few tops this morning and felt like it really worked. It's a new look for me so I'm still feeling it out, but I think it's the smart-casual-with-a-hint-of-fun look I'm going for. The colour of the shoes is gorgeous, and I could see owning them in several shades. I still need to try on the shoes with pants to figure out which silhouette works with them.
I'd never heard of these shoes before this week, but see that they're hugely popular and sold in a few dozen colours/leathers. Any other fans of them here on JCA?

    1. I think they're awesome! My husband actually has a pair that I love :-) I think maybe maqsad has a pair? I remember seeing someone wearing a dark green pair on insta at one point.

    2. shopgrrrl that's fantastic. I'm probably going to become a fan. I like the color you chose! I've been searching for a smart tennis shoe for work, since I'm outdoors a lot, and this might be it. Thanks for sharing! I know they would be good with skirts, which I often wear, but like you I wonder how they would look with pants.

    3. @Sarah, the Cabernet is amazing, as are the other brights like yellow and orange. I also like the patent tortoise, and another patent leather with a distressed look. I found them a bit narrow so went with a 9.5 instead of a 9 (my other Cole Haan shoes are 9s).

  10. Whether you’re planning a night out on the town or celebrating a special occasion, your party wear jewellery should be fun and fashionable. To ensure you get the most mileage out of your purchase, look for pieces that are versatile enough to be worn again. Consider multi-colord studs, pearls, crystal and chandelier styles that can easily transition from day to night. Jewellery staples like vintage cuffs and ear cuffs are also timeless options that never go out of style.
