J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

    1. I'm always looking forward to your reviews, Engineer L - thank you! I voted for the denim jacket in tyler wash in the poll. :)

I have purchased this jacket recently and absolutely love it. Even though it is on the heavier side, I find it fairly soft (much softer than the competition I had tried prior purchasing this one) and I'm hoping that it will soften up even more with wear/washing. I love, love, love the copper buttons - to me they give the jacket an authentic look. The jacket is fitted and cropped, but still TTS. The sleeves will be short for tall ladies or those with long arms; for me they fit *just so* but I'm ok with that. (I'm 5'3 and I got the small.) I could do without the whiskering, but in all fairness it doesn't bother me too much and maybe in time it will fade a bit. I thought the sale price (same as yours) was fair.

    2. Thanks for sharing your experience with the Tyler wash jacket, Ivanka! I also think the price is fair for the quality. It fits better and feels more sturdy than other denim jackets I've tried.

  3. Absolutely love the Downtown Field Jacket in Burgundy. I was afraid the quality would suffer w the new version but I don't think it has. Took my usual S and the fit is quite similar to my old one. The color is fresh and interesting and classic w a twist :)

    1. I cannot wait to see this jacket in person in Burgundy! Thanks for the review. So glad it didn't suffer in the quality department.

    2. Oh I agree, I saw it in my b&m last weekend, and it looks great! If I didn't already have one from prior years...

    3. I agree! I love it. The color is divine!

  4. Love the deck striped shirt. Size down one since it's boxy across the torso (though arms are still rather fitted). It's great since the material is nice and will be good even on cooler evenings as we (finally) move away from summer.

  5. Hi Tippi Aficionadas - I received the old and new Tippi sweaters today and can confirm that the “new” Tippi (E1277) does have longer sleeves, a slightly more narrow neckline, and is not as soft as the old Tippi. I’ll try to take some pics and put them on my Insta later today (and will drop the link here) but wanted to let you know in case you Tippi purists wanted to snatch up the older model from the sale section.

    1. Okay, I added 4 comparison pics to my Insta. New Tippi is also slightly shorter in the body.

    2. I find the new tippi to be softer amd better fitting.
Just got the wine color to go with my pleather skirt.

    3. Hi Ina, I saw the pics of the Sloan and Gemma on your IG. Did you get your usual size? The reviews are somewhat mixed on JC's site for the Sloan and no reviews yet for the Gemma. TIA.

    4. Thanks for sharing, silver_lining! I'm okay with the changes they've made to the Tippi, but then they should really stop calling it a Tippi.

    5. @maryeb I bought the Sloanes in a size 6 which is TTS for me.i dont own the Gemmas and my store didnt have a 6, so i tried the 6 1/2 which are to big. The Gemmas felt wide to me,but that that could also be the half size bigger. When i find out if they ae TTS or not i let you know.

    6. @Ina Thanks for the sizing info.

@Silver_lining Your comparison of the old and new Tippi is very helpful. I agree about the neckline. I find wider necklines to be more flattering than tighter crewnecks. May be a deal breaker for me - too bad, as I really like several of the new colors.

    7. Thanks very much for the comparison shots - those are VERY helpful!

But I am sad - I like the shorter sleeves and wider neckline on the original Tippi so very much (I have short arms, and I look better in a wider neckline).

Maybe I should have one last look at the colors still available on sale in my size?

    8. Ugggh! That neckline is a deal breaker. I am fine with sleeves, would begrudgingly concede 1/2 an inch in the length of the body. But the neckline??? There's no way that tighter crew is more flattering on anyone. Why, J. Crew, why? What is your problem?

    9. Thanks so much Silver_lining. I am so curious why they would change a tried and true favorite. Kinda sounds like they remade it to be more like the company killer 'Tilly'. I am with carmencatalina, I like the shorter arms on the Tippi, I wear them all winter with button downs and like that the cuffs really show. Oh well, with 30 or more, I should be all set with the original.

    10. I dont find the neckline is higher on my new merlot tippi.

    11. Thanks so much for the comparison - a couple old Tippis were restocked in the final sale section and I grabbed another. Super sad they've changed them because I just started collecting them and they give me a perfect slouch when I size up. RIP that neckline.

    12. I went ahead and ordered a couple of old-style Tippis - the price was good, I know the fit (I order up a size so that I can machine-wash on delicate), and there were two colors I wanted that popped back.

Again, thanks for the side-by-side comparison - this blog and the comments sections of this blog are so very helpful!

    13. Thank you so much for the comparison. I saw the new ones in store but didn't have time to try one on. I thought some of the lighter colours looked pretty sheer. I'm glad I have a few of the older style.

    14. Ina Mack - if you look at the side-by-side photos that silver_lining posted, the neckline on the new Tippi is not so much "higher" as it is "narrower".

Both necklines seem to go down the same amount, but the old Tippi has a noticeably wider neckline (side-to-side).

    15. My striped Tippi arrived today. Yes, indeed, someone must have unearthed a box in the warehouse as the inside tag reads FA 12. I'm not complaining as I've always wanted this Tippi and it was a great price. One of the Jackies I ordered is from Fall 2013, so it appears they are doing some housecleaning.

  6. OOTD pic of the vintage scarf print silk dress. Please note that the true color is somewhere in between the product shot on the J Crew site and this photo - my photo has a little Instagram glam added but the true blue color is darker than their photo, but tone of blue is accurate. Dress is gorgeous. I'm a sucker for anything this shade of blue, so I should have figured, but I didn't get the full effect until I tried it on. TTS for me in my usual dress 00. I'm 5'5" and it hits a little above the knee. My only complaint is it's a little tight around the shoulder tops, but this is a common problem for me as my shoulders are broad for my frame. Slightly uncomfortable to hold my arms up for an extended period of time without shifting the dress fabric a little. Otherwise wonderfully comfy. Easily one of my top fav pickups of the summer.

    1. RJ- you look so nice in that dress!

I was just going to leave a review of it. It didn't work on me sadly- I had to size up one size because the waist sat a bit high on me but at 5'7" the length was still too short especially if I sat down. I loved the print but not on me for some reason.

    2. Thanks Jan!! I've seen a lot of people saying that about the waist. I have a shorter torso so it hits me in a pretty good spot and doesn't pull much. Funny, usually things are cut so they don't work on my weird shape, not the other way around!

  7. Vintage Cotton V Neck Tee (B4990) - So I ordered this in petite S. Definitely size up. I usually wear regular XS or S, and the PS was tight on. I didn't like the way it fits me. I prefer the way the regular size drapes and a little looser, so no on the petite size tees. I wish they would make their tees a tad thicker, the white is see through...

Deck Stripe Tee (E1143) - Definitely size down. I usually wear an XS or S in cotton tops and I sized down to an XXS. The sleeves are tight. Don't care much for the fabric. It has that sweater feel to it. I like my stripe tee to be like a t-shirt cotton weave, if that makes any sense. I also didn't care for the way they turned the tee inside out to give it that effect - I prefer the tee the other way around. I may not keep the top, still on the fence. I prefer the Saint James breton because of the fabric, but not the price.

Petite Drapey Chambray Shirtdress (E2537) - I didn't like it on me. Oh well I tried it on and now i know... :)

Petite Broken-In Boyfriend Chino in light khaki (E2787) - Finally chinos that fit me. Its still high rise, but the overall fit was good. Ordered this in P2. Initially ordered size 0 a month ago, good thing I didn't keep the regular size.

  8. I tried the new Matchsticks. They were fine, but I didn't love them. I tried the Lombard wash and the white. The white seemed to have more stretch, but both had stretch. Probably TTS. I don't think they are offered in lengths. Maybe that's why I like my old Matchsticks - the proportions are great in the Shorts. The new Matchsticks are a bit on the long side and bunched around my ankles. It wasn't a good look on me. I'd have to have them hemmed or roll them. I didn't like the fit on top either. My inner thighs looked pretty bad in them. The rise was fine, I'd call it a mid rise.

    1. Cate, I just received the Matchstick jeans in Lombard wash today. I love the fabric (99% cotton, 1% spandex) but hated the whiskering across the hips/upper thigh area. My non-existent rear end looked great. Agre with you re: inner thigh area. No bueno. Lengths probably would have made the fit better for me, too. These would work fine with heels but would have to be rolled for flats. Sadly, I will be returning these and hoping for cord Matchsticks coming soon.

  9. I received the A-line skirt in bi stretch cotton today. I ordered the tall size from the 75% off area of the sale section. It was not marked final sale when I ordered it, and my receipt doesn't show final sale either. I will be keeping it, so that doesn't matter either way.

I got the ivory color. Despite the lining, you can see the outline of the front pockets. They're not glaringly obvious though and it doesn't bother me. Besides, pockets in the skirt! I love pockets in skirts and dresses. The tall size hits me at the bottom of the knee cap, my favorite length. The front slit is nice for walking and doesn't expose too much leg even when sitting. The bi stretch cotton is a nice weight and doesn't seem to be terribly wrinkle prone. There is some seaming in the front and the pockets are nicely finished. Now for the best part. I paid just over $17 for it. Huge bargain for something I will wear a lot.

  10. Received some items today. Seersucker pencil skirt, got the navy and white. I really like this skirt, did not realize that it had an exposed zipper but I don't mind it, plus I love the wide waistband. Plus for $15 a great deal. Also received the Striped Tippi. There was discussion about this looking like an item from years ago, and yes it is, Fall 12 on the label. So no clue where the box of these were hiding all these years. but seems very strange they would list it on the website like a new arrival.

    2. Sorry another comment, maybe this is a vent. I purchased the Navy Jackie 2 weeks, label was SU15. I purchased one for my sister it arrived today, it was labeled SP13. This one was slightly faded, hand written tag stuck on it, no clue where this one has been. So I called CS and asked them to ship me another one, got the same price and they upgraded the shipping since I had already waited a week for this one to arrive.

  11. Beware of Construction issues with STRUCTURED FLUTTER HEM TEE. There are two version in circulation. I purchased in July rollout (ivory) and was sent one that looks like the picture (flat picture one - not model one), Notice the drop sleeve construction? It was very large. I took it back to the store and compared to the one there. It had an inset sleeve construction.(see Navy and gray flat picture). If you read the description, JC states that they have redesigned for better fit. Both version had the same item #. It appears they are still selling/shipping the old design. The inset sleeve fit me perfectly in my usual size. I believe that is why the reviews are so wildly different. Some folks screamm "toooo big" and others it's just right. Bet it depends on what style you recieved. It's a lovely addition to my wardrobe and would highly recommend looking for the one with the construction that fits your body best....for me that was inset sleeve.
