Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. If you'd like a heavier weight military jacket, try Madewell's Modern Military Jacket (#B5858). I love the cut and weight of this jacket. I sized up for more room to layer under it, but my regular size would have worked too if I didn't want to wear heavy sweaters under it.

I also like Madewell's ribbed turtleneck sweater (#B0727) in the heather spruce color. It's lightweight and roomy and the neck isn't tight. It pills, but I forgive it because I love it so much.

  2. I reviewed my best purchases of 2014 and my worst purchases of 2014. Be sure to check out the worst of so you don't get stuck with a dud since some of the items are still in stock or pop back occasionally. Happy New Year!

  3. Hi all. I was looking for a Spring bag in a "stone" type color as an alternative to the Downing Bucket Bag - I really like the style, but I have not been a big fan of the leather quality nor the construction of the Downings.

On a whim, I ordered the Land's End Regatta Bucket Bag in Stone with a bunch of monogrammed Xmas gifts I needed, and it is BEAUTIFUL. Like their garments, Land's End leather bags can be dowdy but I've always found their quality impeccable. This bag is comparable to designer bags I've stalked at 2-3 times the price - thick, soft pebbled leather, lovely construction and hardware. It's also a bit bigger which suits me better anyway. It has the "have forever" quality that J. Crew is promising in the e-mail I received about Spring!

If you are looking for a bag like this, it's worth checking out. And Happy New Year to Alexis and all you wonderful JCAs.

  4. This is a 'buyer beware' for another retailer/their products: Penfield. Madewell sells many of their (very cute) items, but I've been disappointed. Their cute neon gloves came unraveled at the end of two fingers on the first wearing, and the plaid flannel became pilled and worn within a few washings. One of the cute plaid shirts I wanted from Madewell sold out quickly, so I ordered it directly from Penfield. They sent me men's pants instead, and then took three weeks (!!) to resolve it, with repeated lack of response on their end. They have no customer service number-you are forced to deal with them via email only. Funnily enough, our credit card company emailed to verify the Penfield charge was a valid purchase after I ordered it online-I think they must have had complaints about Penfield on file. Never again!

    1. I ordered a Penfield fleece vest and a Penfield flannel shirt from Madewell, but I didn't like either one. They look better on the web site. The fit was nothing special, so back they went. I'd never heard of them before Madewell started selling them. But Madewell is always easy to deal with - glad I didn't have to deal directly with Penfield.

  5. Despite the issues Boden is having today (they are attempting to update their site and in the process a lot of mess is occurring), they did have their second cuts to their sale earlier this week.

I didn't do a separate post on the second cuts at the blog, but did manage to write up a Boden Weekly Review Roundup today , and it does include more info on the second cuts, as well as reviews of many of the winter items in the sale.

  6. I went by the mall today and Gap and Banana Republic are offering an extra 60% off sale items. Gap kids/baby was only 50% off sale.

    1. Ellen, my store still had these in the sale section. Did you call Madewell and ask them to search the stores? I hope you can locate one! Also, my store was still doing the 30% off everything as of today.

  8. Everlane update. I wore my cashmere sweater from them all day yesterday and not a pill in sight. I also received an email from them about new items coming in the next month. I definitely will be looking more at them for clothing items.
