JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Sharing: A couple of layering looks for the Factory excursion vest here and here.

Question: If you own the gauze maxiskirt, what are you wearing with it? I've tried old jcrew graphic tees & the drapey muscle tee, neither of which worked. Also tried a buttondown tied at the waist and that didn't do it. I will also try chambray tied, but anyone have anything else...?

    1. I wound up returning the gauze maxi. I'd found a linen tank in the same color only deeper (does that make sense?), tried it tucked in, hanging out, bloused over the waistband, smooth... Tried pinning the skirt up... I think the problem for me was the skirt, not the styling. Too much fullness at the waistband. Hope you have better luck!

    2. Greetings Gigi - I have some maxi-skirts and love/hate them. Given the length and fullness of a maxi-skirt, a slim-fitting top seems to look best. Since it's summer, I like a sleeveless tank or short-sleeved tee. Loose-fitting, drapey, or otherwise slouchy tops tucked in or out tend to look sloppy on me. Then I often need another layer to deal with air conditioning or chilly nights. Again, a more fitted top, such as a jean jacket, Madewell's Outbound Jacket, or something similar works. Factory or Gap outlets may have some end of season offerings. As with the top, anything oversized or slouchy just doesn't look great. Hope this helps! Jennifer

    3. Hi Gigi -- I paired my navy gauze maxi skirt with vintage cotton scoop beck tee in strip in both navy and grey tucked in: https://www.jcrew.com/browse/single_product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441841002&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302024017&srcCode=AFFI00001&siteId=QFGLnEolOWg-UEA1wcbQuq4M5OPbYqEcmw

I agree with JenniferD; just don't pair it with slouchy tops. In chilly days, I also threw chambray keeper shirt and tied at the bottom. Hope this helps~

    4. @wellfedfred - It might be a lose-5-more-lbs one for me. If won't be surprised if it makes it to the sell pile.

@JenniferD - I think the gauze maxi might not be my friend. I tried a fitted denim jacket with it yesterday and it didn't work. I will try the longer jacket, though. I ordered the short-slv one from Madewell and that might look light enough, layerwise to work. Will also try it with a belt like Lisa/Respect the Shoes.

@Elaine Chao - I tried a blue/wht tee like that last nite, based on your suggestion. Like I said above, a few more lbs and it might look good. I have about 6 more wks to see if I can get some use out of it.

      Thanks for the suggestions, ladies!

  3. Finally got my Pearl Cluster Necklace from the 40% off sale. It was on a delayed UPS truck from NJ that made to Denver 3 days late. I am a little on fence it seems large to me but then did a Google search and found Gigi's review http://www.1060pairs.com/2014/02/j-crew-pearl-cluster-necklace-review.html and since we are the same height, I am thinking maybe I can pull this off. Thoughts anyone?

    1. JRSConifer - The pearl cluster is one of my favorite necklaces of all time. I have some pics of it on Instagram here, here and here (the best pic). A JCA mentioned that it was newcaster-ish to her, but I didn't get that vibe for myself. I absolutely love it. HTH

    2. Thanks, Gigi. I tried it on with a light sleeveless top maybe longer sleeves or darker color is the key. I have tried the Twisted Hammock on so many times and just knew I could not pull that off. It made me feel like the necklace was wearing me. But I really love a chunky pearl necklace and for $40 I think I will end up keeping it. As always your reviews are wonderful!!!

    3. Hey JRS - Height has nothing to do with it . . . it's all attitude! This necklace is a "lot", but I think it's a classic piece that you'll have for years. Like Gigi's second Insta, I bought mine with a crewneck collar dress in mind (Ruffle Hem dress). The dress itself is not embellished, so the necklace adds that "look at me" collar to it. I got the coordinating Pearl Cluster Bracelet (in Sale section) because I like to match (although not all people do). If it still seems too much, there is the Opera Length Glass Pearl Necklace (also in Sale section), which is long enough to double or triple the loops. But I think either option is a little more interesting than the classic single strand of pearls. Good luck! Jennifer

    4. Thanks Jennifer. I will work with the attitude angle :) I do have other pearl necklaces, single strand, short and long so will work with yours and Gigi's ideas for styling the pearl cluster.
