JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. The navy side-slit tunic tee. I can't wear it with skirts or shorts. Minnies seem too dressy. The only thing I can think of are skinny jeans & that seems boring. Anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

    1. Greetings Taylor - I think the long shape doesn't help. It's very casual and seems appropriate with leggings, but I have enough loungewear. I think it would be great as a pool cover up - it's soft knit and priced right for that. BTW, I often go to my VPS when I'm on the fence about keeping an item and am stumped for styling ideas. She often suggests interesting patterns and color combinations that I find help my decision. Good luck! Jennifer

    2. Bathing suit cover up - brilliant! I also happened to think it might look cute with my Andies in Vibrant Flame (not true Vibrant Flame, by the way - more coral-y) cuffed a bit with a long turquoise pendant necklace. I'll have to check out the VPS suggestions as well!

    1. wellfedfred - I've seen that bag irl and it's a tight, cute lil number. I'd still put some protectant on that part, and on the leather. It has feet on the bottom, so that's good, too. I didn't test the strap to see if it goes crossbody, but most do these days. $0.02

    2. thanks, gigi! Do you have any opinion on its weight - you know, the "heavy when empty" test?

    3. wellfedfred - I don't recall the satchel being heavy. And it had tissue in it, I'm sure. It's cute and compact.

    4. wellfedfred -- I have the satchel and it's not terribly heavy. It is rather boxy -- the measurements on the website are accurate, and it looks best when carried by the handle, not over the shoulder like in the product photo. There's no crossbody strap, though I suppose one could be added. No dividers or large compartments on the inside, which makes it great for carrying an extra pair of shoes, cardi or light jacket, or other bulky items. On my monitor the canvas looks grey, but it's really more of a natural canvas color. No quality issues that I've found, and the neutral color and classic styling should stand the test of time.

  3. Hi ladies - can we talk racerback bras? I'm noticing that so many of JC's sleeveless tops are cut in a way that are not true racerback, but cut in enough that regular bra straps often show. Do you have one that you particularly like?

    1. I highly recommend Victoria Secret cotton lingerie line-- the racerback are perfect under Jcrew tops. The racerback bras usually are priced at 29.50-34.50 but they generally run specials (2/49.50). HTH

    2. I second the Victoria's Secret cotton bras recommendation! Many of their t-shirt cotton bras also have hooks halfway up both straps, so you can adjust the bra to a racerback style.
