J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I have a review of the Wool Crepe v neck dress on my blog:
    http://obsessivefixations.blogspot.com.au/2013/04/the-purple-dress.html

I'd call it more of a tunic than a dress, as it's pretty short even on me (I'm 5'2")

  2. Just got the Factory Long Pencil Skirt in natural. Sooo much better in length than the regular, I can actually wear this to work. I have last year's regular version in a 4 so ordered a 4 again this time. It is easily .5 wider when compared to the older one, not sure if that's because its long or if the sizes changed or if I just got a mis-marked 6. In any case I decided to take a chance on shrinking it; I didn't want to deal with exchanging just to find out the 2 was too small. So I threw it in the wash. And I dried it. Against the tag...Other than requiring a very hot and steamy iron everything is fine. Its just enough smaller to fit well, the length is a wee bit shorter, actually perfect for me and I'm glad to know I don't have to dry clean these skirts so long as I take 15 minutes to iron it.

    1. I bought this skirt last month in the bright fuchsia colour and I am really pleased with it - Factory skirts are usually too short and I am glad they are offering a longer length now. Glad to hear they are machine washable!

  4. I can't say enough good things about the pinwheel eyelet skirt (I wore it on my blog here), the pattern detail is really beautiful. The fit is perfect too (I got my normal JC pencil skirt size) and something about the way it's cut is very, very flattering. I think that this has to be my fav J. Crew item in a while :) I got the navy for versatility but the coral/pink looks really pretty too.

    2. ITA, I didn't purchase it (yet) but it fit so well and both colors are gorgeous!

    3. I'm with you, Erika. I got both colours with the lovejcrew promo and can't wait for summer!

    4. I love it too.. did you think it ran little big compared to last year's no. 2? I had to size down this time. Finally i got my navy skirt. I own so many no.2 skirts and this is my first navy skirt!

    5. I got the red eyelet from last year but it fits similarly to me.

    6. I love the eyelet pants! Got them in navy, the pattern is so much fun, and subtle in the dark color until you get up close...love wearing them with a bright pink cardi...fit is TTS

  6. Twisted Stitch Sweater. I need to wash it, but the tag says hand-wash, the web site says dry clean. Has anyone washed this successfully, and how? Thanks!

    1. I would love an answer on this too! This sweater is fragile and would like it not to fall apart completely. I am thinking dry cleaning is the best bet.

    2. Like with all my sweaters and wools, I use Woolite Zero and 'wool' cycle of the front loading washer (wash and rinse with cold water), followed by flat drying.

      Delete
    3. Good to know. Thanks, Rose.

    4. Thanks Rose. I will look for the Woolite Zero and check if my washer has a wool setting. Do you use Woolite Zero with cashmere too? Thanks!

    5. Thanks for the tip, Rose! I was going to try machine washing it too, dry cleaning gets to be pretty expensive. I ordered the twisted stitch sweater in navy during the 30% off promo and it arrived today. I really like the chunky textured knit and the slim fitting arms.

    6. I used it on my cashmere as well with no problems, cate.

    1. J/k my phone isn't working again for links and I am in Maui without a computer. Nobody needs reviews when there's no sale on anyway, right? Lol
Thanks for the link help last time, Gigi!

    2. Amber - You're welcome. :) Hope you have a great trip!

Easy Petite Looks - and Amber is wearing the cropped matchstick in white, for those who were interested in fit.

  9. Posted this yesterday too, but here is a review of the sparkle dot dress and the linen polka dot perfect shirt.

  10. I got the Collection Painter's Rose Dress a few weeks back and, after taking it to the tailor to get the hem lengthened as much as possible, I LOVE it. Orange and blue - such a pretty combination. And I find that so many J.Crew dresses are too tight across my chest, but this one fits just perfectly!! Now I just need the weather to be a bit more accomodating so that I can actually wear it!!

  11. More goodies from the lovejcrew promo, and much better luck in sizing and color this time!

First, two more featherweight cashmere cardis: 1. The “bright plum” is a lovely fuchsia that’s intense but not neon. Looks great with almost any neutral – navy, black, grey, olive. 2. The “navy/stone” tonal stripe pairs the almost-black navy that’s used in so many JCrew pieces with a dark beige. I like it better than true black & stark white, which can be a little too Hamburglar IMHO.

Unlike the cardis I reviewed last week, these two were TTS and nicely fitted (almost the same silhouette/fit as a Jackie). Same size but nearly 1” shorter and 4” slimmer than the neon lime colorway, less (but still some) difference from the vivid aqua. Not sure what to make of that.

Finally, for smaller ladies who missed out on the enamel buckle belt, Crewcuts has a slightly narrower version that runs S – XL. Girls’ L fits similar to the women’s XS, 26” to the smallest hole.

  12. I posted a review for the Liberty Perfect shirt in June's Meadow floral on March 21, and posted a couple of styling ideas for it this past Sunday in this post on my blog for those interested.

  13. Swimwear request...has anyone tried the underwire top? I'm afraid of it looking too much like a bra. In the past, I've always worn halter-style tops, but the underwire top looks so cute with the high-waist briefs!

  14. Review of the jeweled sweatshirt, which gets 25% off with SUNNYDAYS. Also good in-store.

  15. Recently purchased the Sperry Topsider for J Crew shoe in indigo stripe. Love the shoes, looks great in person but the sizing is rather odd. I usually wear a 9 in J. Crew shoes and an 8 1/2 in Sperrys so I tried on both, the 8 1/2 were snug and the 9 were slightly too big to the point of being floppy. I ended up going with the 8 1/2, having been told that they will stretch a bit.

  16. Recently purchased the voile popover at J.Crew and it is very comfortable! It's on sale in stores now with an additional 30% off! I got the coral and bright blue color. Both are great for layering and perfect weight for warmer weather.

  18. Can anybody comment on the fit of the Liberty Schoolboy in June Meadow? Usually a 00 or 0 at J. Crew, but this year I took a 0 in Wool Schoolboys and winter coats. TIA!

    1. I bought the same size as my navy wool schoolboy from this season.

    2. I wear 00 in all tees and tops and bought the blazer in 00, which I think is relatively tight. However, I think this style looks better more fitted and tight, plus I never got the chance to try on a 0, which I suspect would fit fine as well. Sorry that doesn't sound very helpful!

    3. I got the Liberty blazer in a size 4 which is the same size I wore in J crew coats this year (except for the cocoon coat which ran big so I got a 2). I also needed a 4 in the indigo dot blazer if that helps. I was really surprised at how thin and soft the blazer is but it really is beautiful. I like that the body is lined in cotton and the sleeves in polyester (acetate would have been better) because I hate when my sleeves bunch up when trying to put a jacket on.

  19. I took my usual schoolboy size in the Liberty schoolboy. I highly recommend the blazer - the fabric is good quality and lightweight. The pattern and colors are amazing.

  20. Just got back from my local store. They are still offering 30% off on final sale items and they had a huge section. I saw one Liberty blazer in a size 4 ($99.99) and also the micro tweed jacket in navy marked down to $69.99!

In addition to the 25% off tees and shirts, I saw that the cafe capris are on sale for $59.99 and the no. 2 pencil skirt in double serge cotton are on sale for $79.99. These items weren't in the sale section so I'm assuming you can't get the additional 30% off (although I didn't ask).

I was returning a few things but picked up a pair of toothpick jeans in blue grotto for $28 and a shirt for my daughter. I can't believe those jeans were $125 originally! I am new to the toothpicks and love the soft fabric and cute ankle length for spring/summer.

  21. Hi, this is OT but I have a question, please. The return label is for both ups and usps. Do you put the whole label on or just one part? I have used just one or the other before but today the po returned a box to me saying the label was insufficient. So, do you use both or just one or the other? Dumb question but I am confused! Thanks!

    1. Hi Conster - just put the whole label on there and mail it however you choose. I've never had a problem this way. HTH!

  22. cool-- thanks
I just wasn't sure about having the ups portion on there if taking it to the po or vice versa. have a great night!

  23. Well, after asking about the strawberry color Cece I finally got them today...strawberry my ass. Orange. Reddish orange. If I saw a strawberry this color I wouldn't eat it. That's not to say its not a nice color but I wouldn't have picked it out and certainly not for the $70 I paid for them on final sale. Why oh why didn't I buy red Ceces when I could??!!!

  24. I went in today to try on the new matchstick cropped jeans -- in adorable colors. But the jeans seem to fit completely differently than the non-cropped matchsticks. They seem smaller... which is funny because when I tried on the matchstick corduroy pants in the fall they were bigger than last year's and the woman in the store told me they'd changed their sizing.

    1. I wear a 27 in the regular Matchstick jeans and had to size up to a 29 in the cropped white jean. Makes it hard to shop on line.

Lots of stripes and some new shirts and pencil skirts! Exciting!

  27. Tried on Dree Dress in Stripe 96298 in size 00.

I am 5'3" and found the length of the skirt to be acceptably short on me (a few inches above my knee), so would say the online "falls to mid-thigh" description would be accurate for average height persons.

The dress does have an elasticized waist which gives a few inches, but I found the fit to just skim my shape. However size 00 shirts are normally still billowy on me so size up based on your experience with shirts. The skirt of the dress is cut looser and should accommodate you well unless you're very pear shaped.

Only drawbacks were that it's 100% silk (sweat on silk = eww) and would be more suited for gentle lounging than everyday wear even though the cut of the dress is pretty casual. Other issue, and for petites only, is that the torso of the dress would require extensive alteration in order to sit at your high-waist unless you have a large cup size that would take up room in the dress. When I pulled the dress to its correct position, the back zipper belled out horribly (think Quasimodo) and looked to need at least 6" of zipper removal.

  28. Hello everyone,
Sorry if this has already been asked before, but I am wondering if the Goldsign Jenny Selvedge jeans stretch out after wearing. I ordered a size up after reading a few reviews ( I am normally a size 6 or a 29 in JC toothpicks) and I ordered a 30 in the Jenny jeans. I really like them but they fit a little big and I am afraid that they will stretch even more throughout a day of wearing. TIA!!

  30. I was in an NYC B&M today and bought a maritime blazer in stripe (black and tan) - it was marked $89.99 + 30% off sale, + student/educator discount, came to a little over $50! (Originally $138, online for $99). It fits great, TTS. Really cute. Once again proving I should always buy in-store when possible.

  31. Was away and just received my latest order. Medallion Pencil skirt in Petite, ordered my size from last year and it was perfect. Love the material, very substantial, colors are great and since pencil skirts are lined this year I hope it will not wrinkle so much. The Poppy Tee, this item seemed to sell out but came available in an XS. This is the size that I got of the Peony Tee and it fits perfectly. I love the muted colors, the fit is exactly the same as the Peony Tee, short and slightly boxy. Highly recommend if you can get in your size. Also, from another order the vintage short-sleeve pajama set. I purchased in the minty green in XS and the fit is perfect. Usually PJs are very long on me but these fit in length (I am 5' 1").

    1. Also forgot one item. I had purchased the Tabbie T Strap sandals in navy, in one of the promos in store. I was in Florida and wore them for the first time, all day walking around and they were so comfortable. A little rub between the toes but that is normal after 6 months of boots. After all the issues with J Crew sandals for me last year I was so happy that these were great to look at and wear. They fit TTS.
