J.Crew + Public Hotel in Chicago

Racked Chicago posted a new service that J.Crew is offering for guests of Public Hotel (click here to read the post in its entirety):
Public Hotel Now Has a J. Crew Special Offer
By Jared Hatch
September 19, 2012

The most well-dressed hotel, for the past year has been Ian Schrager's Public Chicago. ...The hotel, known for its chic design and hot social scene has partnered with J.Crew on North Michigan to offer guests private style consultations with J.Crew's Very Personal Stylists.

From now until December 31, guests who book the Stay PUBLIC...J.Crew Style Special Offer on Publichotels.com will enjoy a complimentary, one-on-one appointment with one of J.Crew's Very Personal Stylists, a special welcome gift at the appointment, and complimentary courier service back to the hotel or free shipping of any new duds straight home
What a lovely offer for customers! J.Crew offers a similar service in NYC (free delivery to hotel). I do not believe it was tied to any hotel in specific. However, I do like the idea of growing this service to other geographic markets. Plus a welcome gift- a nice touch!

What are your thoughts on the complimentary VPS service being offered by J.Crew to Publish Hotel guests? Do you think J.Crew should expand this service? If so, where?

  1. I don't feel like I need a private consultation. The store on Michigan Ave in Chicago is pretty small and they don't have a lot of items in the catalog. They do have a bridal boutique and I went there for an appointment with their bridal consultant. I have to say that I wasn't that impressed. It doesn't seem to me that they know that much more about their fashions than I do and of course, their main objective is to SELL, not save you money. The bridal gown I was interested in, by the way, was not there in my size, so I couldn't try it on. But they still were urging me to buy it first, then try it on. Huh?

  2. This just sort of reeks of gimmick and makes me roll my eyes. I get why they're doing it but as others like American Observer noted, I have yet to see the value in any sort of consultation with them, either online or in person. Like her, most of the time it seems I know as much or more about JC and its product than their VPS. And even if I wasn't a JCA, I would feel leery of the whole VPS concept--it's hard to find retail sales people that are truly helpful and you can trust. They work for the company, not you, and typically their actions comport with that reality.

  3. All I read was "special welcome gift" and ignored the part about the VPS service. Can they stop trying to push this on us already?

For the record, I'm not sure why I hate the idea of VPS as much as I do - perhaps it's because, despite the price points, I still think of JC as a mall retailer and I don't need help shopping at the mall. Or maybe it's because the only time I've actually utilized the services of a personal shopper were at higher end stores where my shopper emails me to let me know when they're having a major end of season sale. (Note the exclusion of the word "final" - lol.)
