J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. love my black snood, enough that i ordered the gray. i almost ordered the camel/metallic one, but saw it in person and was disappointed. it is a lot less substantial than the black and gray. also ordered the leather cashmere gloves after trying them on in store. according to the measurements online, i should take a Medium. I have small, but wide hands and the S fit just fine. The fingers in the medium were way too long.

  2. Ordered the Majesty peacoat in bright dahlia. The coat was 'meh' and the fabric was thin even though it was their stadium cloth. I compared it to the Winnie from 2009 and it DOES NOT compare with the plushness of the fabric. The majesty just looked like your average everyday peacoat. It was nothing special so I returned it.

  3. Tried on the Mona pumps the other week and they fit comfortably & nicely IMO. Unfortunately my feet are pretty wide so they stretched out a bit at the front in a weird way...gakjsdhaksjhda stupid feet.

The sparkly oxford ballet flats also fit nicely (and I love the style on the pumps), I just have a hard time seeing myself wearing them even semi-regularly. It's such a unique shoe.

Also tried the wool mini skirt the other week, and it fit beautifully. Loved. It. Unfortunately I can't afford it, even with a 25% off :( :(

  6. Has anyone tried on the Dream Cardigan or Jenna's V-neck Cardigan? I'm really tempted to grab them during this 30% off!

  8. I'm still in love with the Sterling skirt and really hope they offer it in more colors. The quality is excellent plus it's lined...highly recommend if you can find one or catch a popback.

  9. Just sharing my love of their cashmere scarf. It's really easy to wrap, or fold & tuck beneath lapels of coats. I have grey and wish there were better colors to choose from as I want a 2nd. The bright colors like that are hard for me to wear against my pale winter skin.

  10. I returned the plaid wool capri in the red check: I loved them and found them very festive but thought I'd get very limited wear out of them. They do look great with the red Mona pumps!
Instead I picked up the fair isle leggings which are so thick and soft, 100% merino, perfect for winter sports like skating and skiing. The colors are lovely and they'll be so cozy with a big sweater.
I have the XS, am typically a 2 in bottoms.

  12. I need a review of the pony skirt. Did anyone see it in store or try it on? Sizing help appreciated!

Also, those of you who tried or purchased the mixed media skirt, can you tell me about the length? It looks like a regular pencil skirt length on the model.

I ordered the new Blythe blouse in deep atlantic during the promo, will review when it arrives.

  13. OT: did anyone else get duplicate order confirmations from their order yesterday? It always makes me nervous when I get two...

    ReplyDelete
  14. AppGal: I also received duplicate order confirmation but it appears to just have been another glitch. I only have the one order in my account history and one charge on my CC.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I finally received the correct size in the flannel-lined chinos (4) and they are perfect this time around. They are a relaxed fit on me but not baggy. I doubt I will wear them with the cuff rolled up much; even though I have a short-ish inseam (32") they still look a little short rolled up on me. I am wearing them today, actually! So cozy.

    ReplyDelete
  16. AppGal, I have received duplicate emails too and I bought a sweater for my husband two hours ago, I have yet to see the confirmation email but the order is on my account.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I have been wearing the thermal henleys quite a bit and they are nice but they do stretch out a lot by the end of the day, they snap back into shape after being laundered. Unfortunately the hem on my blue/black striped one became unraveled the first time I wore it. I zipped it quickly on the machine but that was a disappointment.

  18. Silk Kick Pleat Skirt in Warm Ruby. Stunning color, perfect amount of sheen for the holidays, length hits just at my knee.

Problem is wrinkling. I sat down for 2 seconds while trying it on and the result was significant horizontal creasing in front and wrinkling in back. I love the skirt but think I would be a wrinkled mess wearing it for a whole evening.

    Still a "maybe" for me.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Does anyone have the Chainlink Cable Sweater? I just ordered the ivory one and am so curious about how it fits and feels! (Of course, my package will arrive in 2 days, but I'm impatient.) :)

  20. Received the majesty peacoat in fiesta purple yesterday and I love the color. My husband and I have already started calling it my Prince coat. One question for those of you who already have this coat: I noticed that on the underside of one side of the collar, there is a tab/strap attached to two buttons. On the other side are just two buttons, without the tab/strap. Is that supposed to be like that? And what is that strap even for? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lauren, that is the functional wind-guard collar that is mentioned in the copy online. You button the tab on each side of the collar to use it as a wind-guard. You button it under the collar on either side when not in use.

  22. Cashmere round-up:

Recently ordered cashmere sweaters from J.Crew, Lands End and Talbots on great promotions.

Talbots cashmere was scratchy and quite disappointing. J.Crew cardigan was pretty good, loved the heather purple color. But, the Lands End v-neck pullover won hands down! It is thick and soft. I had to size down from my usual J.Crew size but it fits great and I'm keeping it and returning the others.

Just waiting now for my perennial peacoat to arrive from J.Crew.

  23. Samo and all: I was just about to post the news! :)

I am a huge fan of the Boden Limited Edition line, but I freely admit to it being a bit cost prohibitive...however, with the 40% off, we are talking some pretty great value for well made pieces with exquisite fabrics, and truly unique items. I wish it was Wednesday so I could just put this in the "other retailers" post, but hopefully Alexis won't mind me posting a link with more info, etc., here today. (If it isn't okay, Alexis, you are more than welcome to delete this comment.)

  24. Thanks xoxo! Honestly, I didn't even read the copy - the bright purple color was enough to get me to buy it!

  25. Amy, I reviewed the sweater here.

It fits large on the bottom.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I got my Mohair cardigan in leopard last week. I really wanted to try it with my little black dress. It's going back, unfortunately. The color just drabbed me down. It would look great on someone with brighter colors, maybe black, blonde, or red hair. It was also a bit itchy and ran a little small. Usually, when a xxs is offered, it means the line runs big, but not in this case!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Desert Flower, the length is 25" for a size 2, supposedly.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thanks, Rose. It sure looks that way on the model but the website description for the mixed media skirt says 22". I have my personal shopper looking for it!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thanks, Rose! That's very helpful.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Does anyone have any thoughts on the peacock fanfare jacket? I just picked it up with the 25% off and price drop and though I think it is gorgeous I'm having a hard time styling it without looking matronly or too mature. I am tall and bosomy - any ideas? Or does the fact that I have the turq hacking jacket, navy vintage tweed jacket, and a blue Bella mean this one should just go back?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Just received my items from last week's promo and they are both going back :(

Cashmere Henley: Someone else reviewed this sweater after I'd bought mine and they were absolutely right. WEIRD fit on me. Boxy, blousy, and it's got these big ol' leather buttons that draw way too much attention to my big ol' bust.

Harvest Tweed Gimlet Skirt: Took a shot at this one and it's a miss. The pleats in front were not flattering, and there is no drape to the fabric at all...very stiff. Honestly, this fabric would make a very nice curtain panel but it's wrong for clothing. Thank goodness it's not FS!

Disappointed, but I just ordered the Snowbound Sweater to cheer myself up ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Whitney, the pencil skirt in the same fabric as the gimlet skirt seems to be OK. I have a review here.

    ReplyDelete
  33. @ Rose: Thanks for the link! The skirt + Heart Me sweater combo looks absolutely darling on you - as do most of the items you try on :) That Harvest Tweed fabric does seem to benefit from a more tailored silhouette...I'm not sold on it, but will consider as a future Sale purchase option.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Rose, I agree. I love the combo of the heart sweater and pencil skirt on you.
I see the Risky Business Shirt is still $99 online. It looks very shiny. How is it IRL? TIA

    ReplyDelete
  35. Some pieces I keep forgetting to review from recent promos...

The pink Crystal Brulee necklace is something I laughed at a little when it came out. Then I tried it on with a few items and it's really fun. It was on great sale in store, FYI (I think $30 + % off). I wore it with my pink Lexington, chambray shirt and jeans and it was a really cute combo.

Glovettes -- I love these guys! They were $15 in store before discount in grey and black fyi. I now think I have every color. They're handy (no pun intended) for me, and the red is so cheery. I end up wearing them indoors a lot too. Not itchy and I'm super sensitive on my hands.

Tissue Turtleneck tee in stripe -- Love this! Really cute for layering under a tee or a sweater with shorter sleeves. Soft, thin for layering. Fit is TTS. I personally go with my larger size.

Perfect-fit Ribbon Henley -- I love these and they are a great staple for layering all winter. Nice quality, TTS, good length, substantial cotton. The cherry color is a perfect red.

Snow Sparkle Charm Bracelet -- The charms are cute, but wow, the metal is waaay lighter weight (cheaper) than ever before. I suppose that's why it's priced lower to start, so just an fyi.

Maisie Dress in Waterfloral -- I lucked out in getting this with the big discount after it was marked down. Took a chance and expected to return it, but it's very pretty and I think I'd actually wear it quite a bit. Better/more solid construction than the purple Maisie, though still a bit delicate. TTS, although sizing up isn't a terrible idea to get a touch more length. Definitely not worth the original price, but at the price drop + extra % discount, I think it's reasonable.

  36. I've had bad luck lately! My initially adorable grey minimalist mockneck sweater is already pilling everywhere. I finally received the Pre-order toggle coat in houndstooth plaid, and it was a hot mess of badly sewn sleeves, darker-than-expected color, and too-thin-for-the price (antithesis of "über-luxe"!) wool blend material. I returned it at the Georgetown store and didn't see anything too exciting.

I headed up to the Friendship Heights store hoping for a surprise, and saw the Café capris in harvest tweed in the mint color in my size. I've been eyeing them online for a while now trying to determine if they're amazing or awful. Unfortunately, and unsurprisingly, instead of looking awesome I looked like I fell into a muck tub at a horse barn. Epic fail on all counts.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm still waiting for my order to come; I ordered the Perennial coat, after being underwhelmed with the Majesty coat in store.

I'm on the fence about this sweater deal. Is anyone tall and a fan of the Tippy sweater? it 'hits at hip,' which for me usually means it will be too short.

@dinagideon I adore boden, and I'm super excited the limited edition is 40% off, their clothes are so flattering, I just wish they offered the longer lengths in skirts and dresses like the regular collection. I'm just over 5'10, so it's difficult to get skirts/dresses to hit at a flattering point by my knees.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes, Appgal, I received duplicate order confirmations, but they had the same order numbers, so I'm not worried.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Le Crewsette, I know what you mean about those pants. I tried them on in the store and I was asking myself who could these look good on.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I know there have been comments about wearing sleepwear during the day, but I just got the Sleep-in Pajama top and it is divine. The cotton feels of very high quality, very very soft with a nice weight to it. I love the stripe (it's black on white) and the placket and collar are tipped in a dark chambray. The buttons are nice mother-of-pearl type buttons, not plastic. I wore it to work today (and even gave a presentation) with some black skinny pants and I felt awesome. However, I would recommend sizing down one if not two sizes. I usually buy a M for a relaxed fit, but sized down to a S because I thought it would fit looser being pajamas and all. But I could definitely do an XS and still have a relaxed fit. Sorry for the longwindedness for those of you who don't condone pajamas for daywear, but I confessed to a few colleagues and they were surprised so you can't even tell!

    ReplyDelete
  41. samo, I hate to say it but I am tall (5'10"ish) and not a Tippi fan. Too short! Too bad, because it's so pretty and versatile.

    ReplyDelete
  42. chasingxcars, I have the Dream Cardigan and love it. It perhaps runs a bit small.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Does anyone know if the fanfare jacket in winter's tweed is sold out or just is a case of a missing item? I saw it in the catalog and can't find it online, even with the item number.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think it's an overlooked gem: The blue vintage camp flannel boy shirt is awesome! I posted a quick look at it here. It fits true to size - no need to go up in order to get that looser flannel-y fit. I am wearing the same size I have taken in the gingham boy shirts, the leopard perfect shirt and the blythe blouse!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I just did a post on my blog about this blue flannel shirt and I too think it's a gem! I love it! After all those itchy acrylic sweater this shirt fills so soft and cozy.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Majesty peacoat: Received this in sandstone recently and I like it a lot. The fit is good for my frame. I think the color will go with a lot of different things. I'm not in love with the visible stitching on it, though, at the hems. It makes it more casual. I guess that's okay, though. Quality check: some of the stitching has the ends of the threads on the outside, not on the inside where it should be. Also, it has quite a few finer threads or something sticking out from the inside where the lining meets the wool, and some on the outside also, which had gotten sewn down underneath the stitching. I've just solved those quality problems very carefully with some small scissors.

  47. Some reviews here and here

also have a Stadium Cloth Trench review coming...

  48. Just tried to buy a suit with the 25% off Thanksgiving promo: an Aubrey jacket (53998), Hutton trouser (51804), and pencil skirt (90795), all in navy pinstripe super 120s. The navy colors don't match, however, so sadly the suit will be going back.

I wrote a CS rep to ask if there was any way to ensure that the colors on suit pieces would match, and was told only that the closer the item numbers, the more likely it is that the pieces were made in the same season, and thus with the same dye lot.

And true enough, the Aubrey jacket and Hutton trouser (both with item numbers in the 50000 range) are a match-- a "navy" so dark it's black. But the pencil skirt (in the 90000 range) is way different: this "navy" is definitely blue, and noticeably lighter than the others. I even ordered a second pencil skirt to see if the color difference was just a fluke, but came up with the same matching problem all over again.

It's a shame, since I wear skirt suits far more often than pant suits (and the pants in this case are unlined, and itchy). But I thought the dye lot and item number information might be useful to any of you planning on ordering a J. Crew suit in the future!

    ReplyDelete
  49. whiskily - Thanks for the tip! I was wondering about color matching a while back since I've been wanting to buy some new suit pieces. Will have to pay attention to the item numbers now.

  50. Rebekah, I got a chuckle out of you wearing pjs to work. I guess that won't work with my Nick & Nora pink bunny print pjs...

    ReplyDelete
  51. Haha no probably not Jeanne... I should also note that my work environment is pretty casual, I was just trying to point out that you can wear the shirt out of your home as you would with other casual button-ups and still look very put together, it doesn't look like you are wearing pajamas. I'm going to try mine next with a black wool mini and tights. Oh, and my husband loves it. I will be keeping my eye out for similar shirts in different colors and patterns.

  53. I know this have been reviewed by others, but I'll throw in my two cents on the wool foundry pants. I received them yesterday from the 25% off, and I'm pleased. They have a nice drape, and are a great neutral color. They are unlined, which is fine with me but may not be for everyone. Definitely size down. I am always a 4, and the 2 was perfect in these. They are similar to the cotton foundry pants, but because they are wool, they drape much better.

  55. Argh! Just received my order from last week's 25% off (YOURGIFT) promo.

Love the funnelneck pullover (61597) and keeping it!

I ordered the stadium cloth engineer coat (57770). I love the feel of the fabric, and it's not heavy at all. It's a lot darker IRL. I thought it would be dark gray and beige stripes. Turns out the dark gray looks more navy and the beige looks gray! The front is so unflattering. Perhaps because it's a straight-cut? Anyway, I'm going to have to return it.

Also ordered the double-cloth metro in petite and dark eggplant (52608). Love the color, fit, and style! Just hate the feel of the fabric. And it already picked up some white fuzzies on the collar. I tried to brush off the fuzzies and the coat itself became fuzzy. That screams cheap to me. I can't remember if anyone else gave the metro coat a good review. I'm sadly going to have to return it.

My search for a new coat continues.

May have to reconsider the current sweater promo...

  56. I received a few items...
Cashmere Vneck Sweater - I sized up one size so that the arms wouldn't be tight and it would be a little slouchier in the body. I am glad that I did, I like the arms a little looser. I got the Heather Camel color which I love, it's a little lighter than I thought it would be so it washes out my skintone some but I love the color so it's a keeper.

Vintage Tweed Pencil skirt in blush - I really like the skirt but am a little concerned about the material. There was one spot were it looked fuzzy/pulled already and I can see that happening more from sitting down etc. I really like it though so I am torn.

Always wrap cardigan - I like it more than I thought I would. It is simple, casual but comfy and I like that it has the belt/wrap. I took my normal size in tees, the arms were almost a little snug but I wouldn't want to size up or down for myself. I was pleasantly surprised by this one.

Factory 2 Pocket Chambray shirt - I normally don't buy factory but wanted a chambray shirt and had read reviews on this blog a while ago about this shirt. The quality was better than expected, it is fairly thick and I am happy with it. The cut is more slim than some of the retail chambray shirts which I wanted and I found it fit TTS. I know some have found the selvedge shirt to be huge so this could be an option if you want a slimmer cut. I also like the color, as I didn't want a really faded chambray shirt.

  58. I've been a bit fascinated by the Foundry Wool pants so I got them in the last promo, but I don't know what to think.

My head says they're ridiculous -- legs too wide, crotch too low, too masculine, too itchy, and spearmint-brown? Crazy! And yet I think I love them.

I sized down from my usual 4 to a 0 (!) as the high waist hits me at the smallest part of my torso (and they're generously sized to begin with), and I find the fit quite flattering. In my head I felt very Katherine Hepburn in them. Or maybe IRL I look squat and frumpy? Are they chic? Are they man-repellers? Hard to say.

They're so comfortable, being generously cut in the thigh and crotch, and the unlined leg didn't bother me though it certainly will for some. And the pale green/brown is actually really different in a lovely, neutral way.

The jury is still out on these for me. Might be a return, or might become my go-to pants this season.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I just received the cashmere henley. I actually like the fit, but the buttons are horrible. They are so heavy and they pull. The overall look is terrible. Such a shame.

The snowbound sweater - I like the fit, but hate the buttons. They look damaged. I just zoomed in on them on the jcrew site and they look the same as they do on my sweater. It's like they are scratched and then someone drew a line with a marker over the scratch. What on earth is that? I didn't even notice that until I got my sweater.
I am so sad to return everything.

  60. Just received my order. I agree so much with the thumbs up on the Sterling Skirt. I got the acorn color on popback. Love it and would totally buy it in other colors.

The Factory Emeline Dress in Heather Elm is perfect too. A great staple, but unique dress.

Only disappointment was the Perfect-fit scoopneck shirts. I love the fabric and colors, but definitely to low for modesty. I have a few in size Medium and they seem to strech out, so I ordered the size S. Can't wear it out in public!!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. whiskily, I recently experienced the same problem with navy super 120s suiting. So disappointing that I can't have pants/skirts/jackets from different seasons that match. Boo. I do find that I can do that with the black pieces... they are so close that I can't tell any difference in color from year to year.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I have a few reviews on some not so new items:

The Natasha top: I have the polka dot and is it just me or does it run huge? I got a 4 which is usually too small in the chest for me but this has plenty of room. Nice for those with large chests.

Sally dress: I know this is sold out now but in case it pops back, this dress is generously cut. I sized down to a 4 and it fits (I have been wearing a 6 and sometimes 8 lately)

Luxe silk crepe blouse: Yes, it is VERY bright, and not at all the color pictured. I love it though! The fabric is so thick and luxurious. It does run slimmer than the blythe and other silk blouses that are out now... I have an 8 and I think a 6 would probably be too small through the chest. 6 is my "normal" blouse size.

Talitha top (or whatever it's called now!): I picked it up in wreath and immediately got a spot on it. I was planning to just wash it because lately I have been brazenly washing all of my silk and cashmere (with much success!)... but then I checked the care label just to see, and it actually said machine wash! I was surprised since all of my other J.Crew silk is dry clean or dry clean only. Anyway, I squirted some spot remover on and threw it in the wash in a lingerie bag, and then in the dryer(!) for about 3 minutes to get the big wrinkles out and hung it to dry. It looks perfect; may steam it a bit before wearing. The washability helps counter the delicate nature of this blouse that initially scared me away from it.

Madewell perfect penny loafer: got them in a 10 (my usual size which is sometimes too small) and they just fit. They seem a bit narrow but are very comfortable and seem very well made. A nice, classic shoe!

  63. This a love/vent kinda thing. I got sick of J Crew only stocking one caramel schoolboy blazer at a time in my size (0) I can sorta tell because I'm watching it on seesthesale and it sells out and is restocked several times a week. It is NEVER in stock in my size during a promo (and there have been several, and the Canadian price is ridiculous). So when I saw a 2P with tags for $99 on ebay, I decided to try it. I called for the measurements from J Crew, and the only difference from a regular 0 is the sleeves are 1/2 an inch shorter, and the length about an inch shorter (maybe)
OMG- I am in love. Maybe I should have been trying the petite all this time, because it fits PERFECLY and isn't boxy at all. I even like the buttons.
I think it must have been on reduction somewhere from a return because the buttons are literally attached with one loop of thread (and a ton of wrapped thread doing nothing). I can fix that!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I remember someone saying a while back that the cashmere herringbone blazer was disappointing quality-wise.

I am glad now that I stayed way from it because I recently got the Hacking jacket in cashmere and it is very, very nice. The fit is very flattering and it seems well made. I still lament the loss of the beautiful silk piping and other details they used to use, but even without those details this is a lovely jacket. I highly recommend it if you're looking to splurge on an item you'll wear for years. The cashmere is just SO soft, and I am in love with the hacking silhouette on me, since I am tall and the schoolboy cut doesn't seem to work for me.

Also, the Alisanne dress is the most flattering thing I have ever put on my body. Would make a fantastic bridesmaid dress... I got the navy and I will wear it to a wedding next summer! It looks kind of awful on the model but it is better in person, I swear!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Well I received my JeanShop jeans and I can't believe it but I love them. The fit is terrific and flattering, the first time ever I have tried jeans that fit the waist without a giant gap, yet can also fit my butt which is not tiny.
The skinny legs are flattering and the dark fabric quite classy, I don't think I will look like I am trying to be 20 again.
I almost wanted to not like them as they were very expensive but I am keeping them.

  66. Can anyone tell me if J. Crew's bootcut jean can actually fit boots under the jean? The bottom portion of the jean appears to be very slim and I am not sure if my mid-calf boots will fit under the jeans. Any advice is appreciated!

  69. DaniBP, how is the sizing in the jeanshop jeans? I always have that gaping in the back problem, especially with J.Crew jeans. Lately I'm a 30 in J.Crew jeans or a 29 in matchstick cords, but not sure what size to order in the Jean shop. Thanks! They look really nice.

    ReplyDelete
  70. JCrewJD I took a size 28 in the jeans, I am a 2 in most JC bottoms with the exception of the Sterling Skirt, I took a 0, it seems to run a bit big. My bottom measures 10" bigger than my waist so I always have a huge gap at the waist. Not so with these jeans which thrilled me.
I don't think I'll keep them though. After trying them on again with various sweaters and things they just aren't me. I give up wearing jeans!
I do have the JeanShop dark denim shirt which looks great with pencil skirts, untucked, and full skirts tucked in.
The fabric and sewing on these pieces is really nice. They gave me a skinnier looking leg which was nice, yet they don't feel overly "stretchy" if you KWIM.
    I hope that helps!
