Cardmember Email: Just for Cardmembers, a new must-have bag

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Desert Flower, PatmosJD, & Irina, who shared with us the latest email from J.Crew to its card members.

The email above features the not-yet-officially-released-online the Marlow Hobo (Item 45653; $298.00). J.Crew describes these sandals as:
A classically contoured all-purpose carrier that's quickly achieving can't-live-without-it status. The finish was inspired by antique chesterfield sofas (we sourced the leather from a former upholstery tannery to achieve the perfect timeworn lustre and rich undertones). Add in high-gloss brass-finish hardware, a metallic top latch and a generously proportioned interior and it has all the hallmarks of a cult favorite. An interior front-wall patch pocket and a back-wall zip pocket keep pencils, cell phone and keys organized. Top zip closure. Exterior snap pocket. Cotton twill lining. Import. 8" shoulder strap drop. 5" handle drop. 12 1/2"H x 17"W x 6 1/2"D.
This bag is not wowing me. I might change my mind in person (as I often do). I mean the leather looks rich, and the shades are gorgeous. But right now, I just can't get past how big, how really big it is to me.

On another note, this email means that new arrivals are once again just around the corner! :)

What are your thoughts on the Hobo? Do you like the style and size of the bag?

  1. Looks like a great bag, especially for the price. It looks huge to me, but maybe it is just stuffed with paper. My first test with any bag-how heavy is it when it is empty-and I am curious about this one.

I believe new arrivals surface around the 16th.

  2. I'm with you Alexis on the size of this bag. Love the color, but the size looks like more than I want to carry around in this super hot and humid east coast weather we're having!

  3. I'm finding lately that I really need to SEE the bags IRL. Leather quality, shape, and suppleness/flexibility sometimes make a difference in how a "huge" bag functions for me. I remember the Large Campo ... huge but also stiff and no shoulder strap so it didn't work for me. The new Factory bags also ... cheaper leather and construction. I do like the color and style of this bag, I can't wait to see it. And I'm still waiting for a markdown on the Indio bags, can anyone review that style?

  5. Love the color, but too big for me. I was at the store today, and my PS said new rollout next week, and to look for new sale markdowns coming up.

  6. ITA, JulieStyles, if I can't lift it empty, it won't get better when I start putting stuff in! Interior organization is key for me, too; too old for deep-sea diving at a cash register.

  7. I like it. I tried to carry a small bag and just could not live with it. I need room for a water container in the summer and a little bag won't do. I agree that I need my bag to be organized. I hate trying to find something in a hurry that is burried on the bottom!

  8. I thought I liked hobo style bags, but I tend to prefer more structure all around. The color and leather look beautiful.

Shekster - You might like the PurseN. I have one and love it.

  9. This bag looks really huge. I have a few large J.Crew bags like the Campo but they don't look quite this size, which appears to be too large for me. Just looking at it makes my back/neck hurt. Oooh. :^(

  10. H U G E !!!
Would be so cute in a smaller size.
I'm just not into carrying luggage for everyday.

  11. I think I may have seen this one the last time I was in the B&M. It is large, but from what I remember it didn't seem to be as huge as it looks in the picture on the mannequin. I think they definitely have it stuffed a bit too full. The dimensions they give aren't that big, either. I have a couple of handbags from COACH about that same size and they aren't overly large at all.

  13. Wow, Thanks gigiofca! I think my heart stopped for a minute when I saw those inserts. The animal prints look purrrfect...pun intended! Seriously, I am measuring my bags right now. I really need to look at other sites more often besides J. Crew apparently. LOL

  15. I just purchased this bag yesterday. I fell in love with the color and style when I saw it online. I HAD to go to the store to see it irl. Yes, the dimensions sounded big to me but the way it slouched online was enough to get me off my rump.

I was disappointed when I first saw the bag, stuffed with paper, it looked like I could fit in it. After pulling an exorbitant amount of paper out, I was PLEASANTLY and quite shocked how well it slouched yet the base kept its shape. It had some structure to it. The bag is hefty but that just tells me they used thick leather not thin leather like my Bal bags.

I was content with how it slouched and hung on my shoulder. The shoulder straps fit easily over my shoulders but I'm petite in stature, about 5'2, 102 pounds.

I did not find this bag overwhelming on me in the slightest and I'm not a huge bag fan. I like proportionate bags and I felt the Marlow achieved my goal of having a carryall that doesn't look like it's carrying me.

Please give this bag a second chance and view it in the store WITHOUT the paper/stuffing inside. It will make a world of difference.

  16. I have this bag. The leather is lovely; however, two of the rivets popped off - they are kind of decorative, so not from excessive wear. J Crew would not help me with this. It seems to me that they should stand behind their products, they don't!
