Spotted: J.Crew's Jenna Lyons All Around Town {part two}

"Thanks!" again to Kate (check out her lovely Moodboard blog), who let us know about some more spottings of J.Crew's Jenna Lyons during NYC's Fashion Week.

The above image (from vogue.com), shows Ms. Lyons with Joseph Altuzarra at La Esquina. The style she is wearing is relatively simple (camel wool coat over jeans) and it looks so great. The touch of color with her oversize clutch is perfection!

The two images below (from Refinery29), show Ms. Lyons street style. (Click on either image for a larger view). Although I think Jenna is gorgeous, I am not a fan of the overall outfit. There is too much going on with all the pieces together (but I do think each piece on its own is pretty). On a bright note (literally), I do love the sweater she is wearing (the color is amazing!)

Lyons is definitely working her unique style during Fashion Week, complete with her signature frames!

What are your thoughts on Jenna Lyons' outfits? Do you like her overall style? :)

  1. Aw, Jenna. I always like one or two of the pieces she has on. The coat is awesome and so is the color of the shirt. What's disturbing is that she seems to want to make herself look bad on purpose. She'll take some great pieces and then go all weird with them. I wish she would step away from her teen gawky period and into the tall, beautiful woman she is. It's like she can't see it.

  2. I can't get past those 'signature frames,' unfortunately. At least they are not as hideous as the ones she was wearing in the shoe video.

  3. I'm with Rose. The glasses are just about all I see when I look at pictures of Jenna. She is pretty without them, so why intentionally make herself look bad?

  4. Jenna looks like a bag lady and Marissa sends out emails about J. Crew jackets in which she is wearing a high end designer jacket. It's like they don't want me to shop with their own company, LOL!

  5. I'm surprised to see Jenna in the leopard bag and coat. I recall reading in one of the interview posts a while back that she dislikes animal prints.

  6. I also can't see anything but those glasses. With all the prettier Cutler & Gross and Selima frames JC offers, she chooses these. Desert Flower - you nailed it!

Oh no, wait... these kinda look like C&G #0927 - item 37886 on jcrew.com.

  7. For the ladies that don't feel Jenna's style, you're not going to be convinced to buy J Crew pieces based on what she's wearing, are you? You know your own style and you'll choose what you need, and work them your way.

Meanwhile, Jenna has her own philosophy on style, and it may not match your idea of beautiful, but obviously she's someone that cares a lot about fashion therefore she must be choosing the pieces that make her feel herself. Everyone has their own ideal fashion character (or a few) and sometimes gawky is a flavour to be worked. I know if I went full 'pretty' or 'glam' I would feel kind of strange, like I was wearing a costume that didn't express my kind of confidence.

  8. The glasses just kill everything for me. I can't see beyond them. I'm very sorry to say it, but they just don't flatter her face! And what's worse, they hide how pretty she is and her beautiful bone structure too.

I'm all for statement glasses -- hell, I wear them myself -- but there comes a point where you should listen to the lady in the eyeglasses store. She's been looking at people in various frames a LOT longer than you have. lol

  9. I agree that she is free to show off any style that she chooses. However, this looks frumpy and precariously close to baglady.

She is far too pretty for this.

While I don't love all her picks, I think Alexa Chung, does a much better job of actually pulling off this kind of look.

Jenna just has too much craziness going on in every outfit. And those glasses! Gack!

  10. I love that leopard coat!! Any idea where that's from? Vintage?

  11. And Desert Flower, ITA about the email w/Marissa wearing someone else's jacket, but pushing their jacket! What up w/that?! Stupid IMO>

  12. I also like the individual pieces (and the glasses don't bother me) but with everything together, she looks like she should have a black bar across her face as a Glamour "Don't"! I think she looks frumpy, not stylish. Proves you really can have too much of a good thing! I know both colors are technically neutrals but the gray shoes and tights do not go with the camel and animal prints.

  13. I was at the Jason Wu show last Friday and spotted Jenna Lyons (even snapped a photo). My friend leaned over and whispered "If she represents J.Crew, why does she dress like a hobo?"

    ReplyDelete
  14. Not a fan of any of it. I normally admire her for her ability to mix high and low-end fashion and dressy and casual, but this looks like my grandma got dressed in the dark after too many Manhattans.

And good God, Jenna, stand up straight!

  15. Ugh, those glasses.

    They've effectively rendered me speechless.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh, oof.

Her specs make me feel like she is trying way too hard to be hip. My hubby and I often see "hipsters" out and about and while bits of their outfits and accessories are things we would love to have in our own wardrobes, when the pieces are put together, they look like they spent HOURS creating that just-mussed look in order to look like they just rolled out of bed. Jenna is doing that here, her look reads to me "I can put a great outfit together in four seconds flat, and to prove it I am just going to grab the pair of glasses I have at my bedside that I only use when I can't find my REAL pair of glasses."

I really want to see her just NAIL it. She was almost there with these, I even like the animal print on animal print look, but it is like she is resisting being full-on AMAZING, maybe she thinks she won't be taken seriously unless she takes some SERIOUS (and often awful) risks with her look.

If you can grab a look that can and will look GREAT twenty years from now, no matter what is in style, that is success. And I believe that Jenna can do that, she just isn't. Sad!!!

Just my opinion, if you don't agree with me, that's cool!!!

  17. I think it's really cool to see a woman whose idea of looking good isn't looking pretty. She's a powerful woman, she has the luxury of not caring if someone thinks she's attractive or not - she can just look fab to her own taste. I like the glasses.

  18. I have a couple of thoughts concerning Jenna and her style. One, she's a big girl, she can wear whatever she wants. Two, I think everyone goes through style phases, maybe she's going through a frumpy Aviator-esque Annie Hall one right now. I don't understand why she chooses to cover up her beautiful bone structure and tall, slender frame with too many heavy clothes. Maybe that's why her posture is so bad, she's literally being crushed by her many layers of clothing. Has anyone beheld her husband's "art"? That also could be an explanation. Really, the problem here is not Jenna, but rather the stupidity of celebrity association. If in a magazine you see Katie Holmes in an ad for Ann Taylor or Julianne Moore featured in a Talbots spread, surely you don't expect them to not wear Tom Ford to the Oscars? I personally don't think these latest ensembles have been very flattering on her, however Jenna, like everyone else, deserves to wear what makes her feel good and I hope she is doing just that!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ugh. Leopard, Bright orange, and dusty blue don't match. Individually, they're fab...but she has too many spring trends going on in one outfit. Those glasses can't possibly look flattering on anyone. I know she's free to wear whatever the heck she wants to, but when she's the creative force behind one of America's biggest fashion retailers, her look should stand up to a little criticism.

  20. If my grandmother's couch grew legs....this is the look.

  21. I really wish she would take those glasses off and get some nice pair.

  22. Oh, and I forgot to comment earlier on the WSJ article posted a couple of days ago, I think.

It was mentioned that she got a $1M bonus but it was full of strings attached. I found that insulting to her, considering what their revenues were during that year. She needs to learn to negotiate better. JMHO

  23. I agree, frumpy. The second outfit looks like something I wore when I was 14 and was trying to look cool. Trying, and failing. The glasses make her face look hideous, which it is not.

    LOL, Desertflower. You're so right.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Dig the glasses--thanks for the tip that they are on the site! If you have more than one correction the larger frames are therapeutically helpful.

I love the top/first image--and while the 2nd is not my particular style the texture and pallete pretty.

isn't the bag is that special collection version of the brompton hobo? I remember drooling over it during the holidays...

  25. I really dislike Jenna's frumpy style. She never appears to be appropriately dressed for the occasion.

  26. There was a video attached to this week's WSJ interview that Alexis posted (they have a series called "Boss Talks) in it she remarks that you can't care what anyone else thinks about you--great advice! So interesting the varying opinions. We all have different styles and opinions--my $.02: Ms. Lyons is the antithesis of frumpy.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ugh; I just don't get the look.

I agree with other posters that she looks dangerously close to baglady-chic and just trying too darned hard. Not a pretty look, in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Jenna, your outfits look great, but I am NOT wild about the aviator specs on you.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I like the outfit, but the glasses are HORRIBLE. she should stick with the buddy holly/faux nerd glasses she normally wears, and stay away from the 1970s coked-up date rapist specs.

  30. Those glasses remind me of the guy from the Humpty dance, her nose looks plastic

  31. What I find interesting is how long her skirt is. Oh I miss the days that I could buy a skirt or dress and cover my thighs.

I know some love the mini phase but I personally always hope for some classy knee length dresses and skirts too. Maybe there are coming back to Jcrew? Maybe only in my dreams....

  34. I agree with what some other people have said - she is dressing in a way that reflects HER sense of style. I think that's great. I wouldn't choose it personally, but I think she looks like an artsy individual, and not like she's trying too hard. I relate with what someone else here said when they said it wouldn't feel genuine or authentic, personally, to be dressed all pretty-pretty-perfect. If it isn't you it isn't you.

I am conflicted about some of the more critical comments in the same way I sometimes feel conflicted watching Stacey and Clinton - it's almost like they want everyone to look the same, and conform to one homogenous idea about style.

  35. There are oftentimes when I go out here in the DC area where I am the odd woman out wearing a pencil skirt, tailored top, and heels with a full face of makeup and done hair, especially if it is a Saturday morning at the coffee shop. (And I get some weird looks, it's okay, I guess my version of "dressing" doesn't work for everyone, either!!!)

It sort of all depends really. Jenna's style here would for sure "fit in" and *be* the homogenous look for many neighborhoods, farmer's markets, etc. and my style would not be. I think she can and often does look awesome and amazing. I wish that I could say that about the glasses she is wearing...and I just can't. I will say that not one person would bat an eye at her look here in this area and I am sure other areas of this country, though. Seriously, even with the glasses on...

So I don't think it was any of us being especially critical and saying we want her to fit into a look isn't her, we are saying that this look may not be her best for her particular face, body, etc. That's all!!! ;)

I am almost never critical, but in this case, as a huge fan of Jenna, I wanted to put it out there that she almost got it, but it is so very hard to look past the glasses. (I even covered her head with my thumb and I found I really did like the two outfits!!!)

I have enjoyed reading all these comments because it really does remind me (and I hope others) that style is oh, so very personal. :) And how great is that? Even Stacy and Clinton would probably do a fist pump to that!

    Have a great night, all!

  36. Love Jenna but those glasses make her face look like the front of a bus.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Let her be. We all have our own way of dressing ... why must everyone be so critical of Jenna Lyons? Just because she wears this doesn't mean J.Crew customers will look like this when they purchase J.Crew merchandise. It's all about personal style/choice. Do you and don't concern yourself w/ what she wears! I actually like the outfit. I wore something similar to this to work & everyone loved it! Step outside the norm ... that's what makes fashion exciting. Variety is the spice of life.

  38. Well said, Dina. I don't think anyone expects her to look a certain way that would generally be viewed as conventionally 'pretty' or particularly feminine. What resonates for me is that she doesn't appear comfortable in her skin. That's what I see in her attire & these particular glasses. The ones she wears in the WSJ interview that Alexis subsequently posted are less bizarre.

It's always interesting to hear Jenna speak in interviews because she does sound very wise and very good at what she does. Her exterior strikes me as gawky & insecure when her being is completely the opposite. I don't like seeing Jenna cover up with pieces that are almost like props or masks. If she just stood up straight, a lot of these outfits might play better and the glasses more a la Iris Apfel.

I think many of us love to see successful women. So perhaps the disappointment here is we're not perceiving success in some of her outfit choices. I agree that the comments can seem mean or catty. However, the company has long abo been pushing Jenna's picks and lots of other PR about her. If they're essentially suggesting we aspire to her style & taste, it's a bit disconcerting to see how she puts things together. On another note, her dressing this way could totally be a part of then trying to transition Marissa to the forefront. Make Jenna frumpy and weird. Get us to love Marissa now. J Crew PR seems so contrived and convoluted at times that it's really not a stretch.

  39. Gigi said it perfectly. I am reminded of the outfit JL wore last year with skinny jeans, the chambray shirt and some rockin' pointy Louboutins. She was standing up straight, looked happy and confident, and the outfit came across as effortless. She seems far less comfortable in these outfits and I think that is reflected in her body language.

But, as much as I may not like these outfits, I do admire her for taking risks. Let's face it, we all have fashion hits and misses in our own lives, and you can't please everyone.

  40. I'm gonna be the odd woman out - I love the street-style outfit! Quirky and cute, and I love the bright orange/red with the leopard print.

  41. C'mon! honestly jenna? shannon- lol!!! where is the moustache?

  42. I am forever in her debt for pairing heels with camo and cargo pants but I just am not digging this bag lady look.
