J.Crew Collection Video

J.Crew recently updated their status on their Facebook page (click here), by sharing the following:
Check out the video of our most to-die-for J.Crew Collection pieces, featuring the Magnetic Fields’ song “Absolutely Cuckoo.” Watch the Collection in motion
The video can be viewed over on J.Crew's site (click here).

First impressions on the video is that it is cute. The song is sweet, the model is adorable. (I love that she is smiling!) As for some of the "outfits" (and yes, I meant to put that in quotes!)...

What is happening?!? I just don't get some of the styling. For example, the screen shot above shows quite an imagination. So many different patterns in different fabrics that should probably not be paired together. Where do I begin about wearing bikini bottoms with a wool jacket? I guess it says, "I am not fully committed to Fall yet!" ;)

Or maybe J.Crew gets that their outfits are a little out there. Hence their song selection of "Absolutely Cuckoo". :)

What are your thoughts on the video? Do you like the styling? Do you think I am being too critical? Please share! :)

  1. I laughed out loud at the shirt wrapped around her head. I seriously thought JC was going to be shilling head turbans this fall (until I realized it was a shirt)... and to be honest I wasn't *that* surprised.

  2. I want the leopard hat SO badly, but it is sold out!! Has anyone seen it in stores? Also where is that Katie Holmes beaded dress? I want THAT too!

  4. Absolutely cuckoo describes the styling perfectly.

  5. I am so over JCrew right now. The styling is just wacko.

I have bought a few collection pieces over the years when they were better made and worth the money. Now it is just a gimmick.

  6. I found the styling to be a total turn off. It made me not even want to look at the collection section, much less buy.

  7. I agree that the styling is a bit off, but I also figure, why take it so seriously...It's J.Crew's approach to being more fashion forward. For instance, if you have ever watched a runway show, you may say to yourself, "who would actually wear that." Take elements from the styling and run with it in your own unique way... :)

  8. guys--lighten up--it's for fun. very cute--like she was playing dress up in front of a mirror or an adoring fan. and that is a scarf wrapped around her head as a turban--I saw it yesterday and might go back for it.

  9. I think the idea of playing "dress up" is great, but I have one question. Who decided to make the model look like a bunny with that white poof on her butt?? (In the opening shot) Is it a purse? A muff? Halloween idea for JL?!

  10. It's a scarf, not a shirt, that's wrapped around her head!

  11. p.s. I wanted to go back and get a scarf too, after I saw that.

  12. After I watched the video three times in a row, I still couldn't identify or get a clear idea of one single piece in the video. I don't really care about the song or how "cuckoo" the styling is, I just want to see the clothes! J Crew had trained me to edit out all the questionable styling so that wasn't the problem. The whole thing just moved so fast,I couldn't tell what she was even wearing.
It reminds me of how I used to try to sneak out of the house in highschool. I'd dash out really fast before my parents could get a close look at whatever crazy thing I had on. Maybe J Crew was thinking "Quick! If we show it to them really fast, the won't notice how questionable the quality really is!"

  13. I could totally pull off the look where the girl isn't wearing any pants! At least, as long as I'm working from home that day, LOL.

  14. I see nothing interesting, innovative, creative or "fashion forward" about randomly piling on numerous mismatched items. YMMV apparently.

  15. Question: I bought the stole as soon as it came out but I have yet to see how to wear it. The photos of the models all have it just barely draped and not tied, so if they moved, it would fall off. I love the concept but it really isn't very practical. Thoughts? As for the rest of the styling...meh. I don't know anyone who would wear two jackets and two shirts or bikini bottoms and a wool top. The thing is, that is the way runway shows and fashion shows are constructed. It's never practical applications of the garment, just artsy visions. But I agree with most other posters- you really just have to try and scrutinize individual pieces on the models and in the stores to get a good idea if it is something you like.
