J.Crew Email: Introducing the fringed MacAlister boot for her

"Thanks!" to many of you, including HeidiG & Marietta, who shared the latest email from J.Crew this morning.

The email features the Fringed MacAlister Boots (Item 25486; $158.00) which is described as the following:
Just when we thought it couldn't get better: our famed MacAlister boot, now with fringe—and like the original, these are made from the finest Italian suede. Our original MacAlister is inspired by the crepe-soled boots worn by British officers in WWII. Unlined for a more casual feel. Hit at ankle. Crepe sole. Made in Italy.
The regular Metallic Suede MacAlister Boots (Item 24411; $145.00) are already "meh" for me, adding the fringe only makes it worse. Although, I will give "kudos!" to J.Crew for adding a bit of history about the shoes in the description. I do find those tidbits interesting.

Personally, this is not a look I am going to pursue. Even if they are super comfortable, the price makes me want to turn to my classic "go-to"— a simple pair of black Converse All Star Lo-Tops.

What are your thoughts on the MacAlister Boots? Do you like or dislike the style of the classic footwear?

  1. Really cute, but not for me. I saw someone wearing a similar shoe with a check skirt a couple weeks ago and it looked really, really good. They were a skinny hipster-type and as I am a slightly pudgy professor-type, I don't think it would work :) a

  2. I really like desert boots in general; they have a classic tomboy-ish appeal. But, I think adding fringe to them kind of defeats the purpose and makes the shoes too fussy.

  3. Just ordered them on the weekend...but then again I ordered the curator pant the first day!!! ;o)

  5. It's like J. Crew is bringing back the worst parts of the eighties.

  6. These should be on sale just in time for fall.

Which is when they should have been introduced.

  7. I have a similar pair without the fringe that I wear once about every 2 years. They don't fit my usual style and I only wear them when I'm feeling a little granola-ish, which is about once every 2 years. :P

  8. That's gonna be a no. My mom had a pair of these in the early 80s. No, seriously. I have a picture.

And while I love my mother dearly, I'm a bit too young and fabulous to be taking fashion tips from her just yet. Pass...

  9. ot- has anyone seen any reviews of either the canvas utility tote or the garrison tote?

i need a new bag for the spring and these two are the running.

    thanks!

  10. I think they're cute but, like Rebecca, I don't think they fit my almost-40 style :)

And Raina is right -- these are a fall shoe to me, not spring/summer when I'm longing to wear sandals.

  11. I do not care for these AT ALL! I just don't get it...they showed these with the watercolor potpourri skirt in the online photo and the whole look made the model look short, heavy and dumpy. Probably not the look most of us are going for.

  12. Most of you are too young to remember, but in my HS in the 80s these represented the rare intersection of hippie and headbanger fashion. For some reason all the metalheads at my school had a pair of these, as did some of the hippie stoners.

I say fug. I can't imagine wearing these as anything other than bedroom slippers.

  13. Hexicon - I am right there with you - yep, late 80's, the "heads" at our school wore them - and a taller version. What did "head" stand for? Metalhead? Pothead? Who knows...but we all knew what it meant. These will be a PASS for me.

  14. Haha...Hexicon and HeidiG, that is exactly the same *crowd* that wore these shoes at my HS, too.

I'm sure there will be some who can wear them now and look great, but I personally won't be trying them.

  15. I do remember fringed Minnetonkas in the 80's, but not these exactly. These are less moccasin-ish. I really like them but I don't know if I'd really wear them.

  16. They at least look comfortable. I'm jealous of the people that can pull these off- bc that person is NOT me.

  17. I would have worn these when I was 15, with shorts. I'm now 39 and my legs are not as pretty as before :(, so I'm going to pass...They would look very cute on my daughter, JCrew should offer them in Crewcut sizes, I would buy a pair for her.

  18. Not a fan of the fringed MacAlister boot, but Garance Dore, who featured a white button down JCrew shirt on her blog (with Gap khakis & vintage lingerie) today also has a link to a similar looking fringed boot (Minnetonka) on her blog and it looked really cool on the model. Of course you have to be tall skinny & leggy to carry it off!

  19. I think they're adorable, but they're very similar to the fringed Minnetonka moccasin-boots I already have in my closet... that I almost never wear.

  20. Not for me at all. Not even close. Can't wait to see how some JCA's style these!

  21. Excellent, now I have something to wear with my floral romper!

  22. These boots make me want to cry. But maybe at 37 I'm just too old to get the appeal....?

  23. Super cute, maybe when they go on sale I'll buy them

  24. My first thought: Judd Nelson's shoes in the dancing sequence in The Breakfast Club
