J.Crew Email: INSIDER SALE. Ends today. 20% off your order of $150+.

Did you forget about the recent promotion? J.Crew sure hasn't! ;)

"Thanks!" to Marietta who shared the following email J.Crew sent this morning. J.Crew is {yet again} reminding us about their offer to take 20% off purchases of $150+ with promo code INSIDER. This offer expires today, 11/18/09, and is available online only.

Incidentally, what is up with the sale updates? They seem to be happening at the most random times (for example at 3AM this morning, and again at 8:30 AM, EST). J.Crew likes to change it up a bit I guess. ;)

Have you already taken advantage of this promotion? Will you be taking advantage of this promotion? Are there any items you are interested in getting?

  1. I did take advantage of this promotion for the Stadium-cloth Friday coat in heather graphite. LOVE the style of this coat, and literally shrieked when I saw it in the B&M, because it is very cute IRL, and also because it was marked at $298 (as opposed to $325 on the website!). The fabulous SA called and ordered it my size at the B&M price of $298 and I was given INSIDER on top of that, so it came to about $240. I'm excited for it to arrive, as I need a warm winter coat and found that the stadium-cloth seems to be the only fabric that will stand up to an upstate NY winter. I'll be sure to review it when it arrives.

  2. uwhg! (can't spell the word of frustration I'm looking for..)

I am so tempted to get the Maya cardi plus something to use this code but I don't dare spend more as I am in the midst of Holiday present buying!

I am, however, thankful for this code. Thanks J. Crew!
(and how about putting the Maya on sale.... :-)

  3. Crew, I bought three Mayas and only wore one - by the end of my workday it had several tiny holes and the arms were all pilled. I was so bummed I immediately returned the other two, even without knowing if the one I wore was "defective". I know that other JCA's have been happy with theirs, and I LOVE the style, it was just too low-quality for me. :(

  4. Still thinking about placing an order...I need to be sure I really WANT these items and not just being Pavlov's dog reacting to the 20% off promo... :)

  5. I'll second the comment about the Maya. I know many people love theirs, but I've worn mine twice, and it looks ready for the Salvation Army.

I wish JCrew would quit it already with the 14-gauge merino. It's not chic, it's cheap.

  6. I am thinking about the graphite Friday coat also. I love gray coats.

Does anyone already have this? I would love a review.

Also, the bungalow skirt - how is it fitting?

    TIA

  7. Being on the west coast, so many goodies are gone by the time i get on line. Wish I had checked at midnight for the 3 am update!

  8. silver_lining, I can't wait to hear how you like the coat. It's so lovely in person.

  9. I love most of the 14 gauge merino. The celosia and the marzipan cardis have worn really well for me. I live in Florida and appreciate having clothing that looks fallish that I can actually wear when it is still 80 outsite.

However, J Crew really needs to watch their quality because the Mayas in my B&M already looked shop worn.

  10. silver-lining,
    Corry,
    kitsmommy,

Thanks for all your comments on the Maya cardi and 14-gauge merino in general.

I live in a cold winter climate and maybe should take this as a sign to pass. Such lovely colors.....sigh...

  11. I have had good luck with my Maya but I agree that the quality is suspect. The ones in a few of the JCrews locally look pretty tattered already.

As for this promotion I won't be able to take advantage. I have however used the free shipping in my account several times already. I wish they would continue this, maybe as a cardholder benefit?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I haven't had too many problems with the 14 gauge merino. I had one sweater that got a hole after 2 wearings (plus shredding chiffon embellishments) but I brought it right back for a refund. Other than that all my merino sweaters are holding up well (and I have many from this year and last). Now the cashmere and dream yarn, that is another story. I only buy those on deep discount.

    ReplyDelete
  13. While I wish the merino was thicker, it is nice to wear the sweaters year round, and with some layering, the merino holds up to Chicago winters.

I was at the Chicago North Ave store yesterday and they had a number of cashmere sweaters for $70. They had the long sleeve tee style in a papaya type color and aqua, and a bunch of the 3/4 sleeve cardigans in a variety of colors.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Has anyone tried the Abby heels? I want to get them with the 20% off but want a review first.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would like to "reward" JC for offering this promotion and free shipping on my account, but I am all shopped out for a while and will just have to wait.

Re merino sweaters, are folks noticing a difference between those from last year and those from this year? I snagged multiple Tartines, Melindas (Melissa? the one with button cuffs), Portlands, and Michelles on supersale and have been very happy with all of them, but I haven't purchased any sweaters yet from the fall rollouts.

(Cashmere is another story . . . my tees from last year are so ratty that I basically use them as sweatshirts.)

    ReplyDelete
  16. I am glad a discussion about the Maya has come up b/c I just got mine dry cleaned last week and there is so much pilling at the bottom of it. It's so disappointing because as we all know, it's not cheap. The front still looks cute with the twist and I doubt the pilling is very noticable but I've only worn it about 3 times and it looks like I've had it for way longer.

As for the insider sale, I was so excited to see this until I realized I would have to buy the outrageous shipping. I hate how J.Crew staggers their shipping and they don't have a flat rate like Banana Republic. So, I didn't take up on this one. Does anyone know when the next red card is coming out? I could really use one right about now!

  17. My hubby used the promotion and bought himself the Barbour jacket and a vest. He has been stalking this jacket for while so he was excited to finally get at a discount. I am going to buy my mom the Ingenue coat in spicy plum once I get off of work. She sure deserves it! I might use it for me and something that I have been pining for too.

  19. I cannot believe the greatest material content in the Fair Isle cardigan is acrylic. Such a shame.

  20. I used the promo to buy the rosebud pencil skirt. I had free shipping on my account as well so just had to go for it. There were so many rave review of the rosebud skirt so I hope it lives up to them. Love JCrew pencils, they make it so easy to get dressed for work and add some color during the drab winter. Well, maybe not so much color from the rosebud shade but the other pencils are pretty lively.

For those who have the bright blue pencil skirt, what colors are you pairing with it? I wore it today with grey hose and shoes and a white blouse with a bright scarf. I tend to stick with grey or white but would love to try something a little more exciting. Any ideas?

  21. I have an appointment with my PS tomorrow to hopefully find some new things to wear for Thanksgiving/holidays. He told me new merchandise just arrived in our B&M. Has anyone seen the new stuff? Any thoughts on what looks good? What's different than what's online? I'd love some nice but comfortable tops and a skirt. I'd appreciate any info/ideas.

  22. Sarah Mina,

Several JCA's have discussed the fact that we highly doubt there will be any red cards this year.

Lots of articles support this theory as JCrew's inventory stock is inline and there is no excess stock like last season.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes, Laura, I am in full agreement on the Fair Isle. I have gone back and forth with myself, because it is a sweater I could really use. But I refuse to buy it because of the content.

  24. I like the navy Iced Houndstooth jacket too, love it in fact, but even with the 20% plus the shipping and tax, we're talking over $400. for a jacket I haven't seen in person, is not in the catalog and it appears no one has seen it. Guess, I'm just not ready to take the leap site unseen on such an expensive jacket. But I so love navy and houndstooth.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Wow, Wendy,

You were able to use the promo on the Barbour Jacket? I looked for another one of J. Crew's partners, Converse Jack Purcell, and they told me the code wouldn't work for those....

    You were lucky!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I have the Stadium Cloth trench in gray and LOVE it. It is super soft, super warm, and super high quality. One of the best J Crew purchases I've ever made.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Took advantage of the knits and tees that were on sale last week and purchased the perfect fit cardigan. Just got it in today and love it!

  28. Crew Cricket-

I read on the JCA blog that they were not even advertising some of their Men's Collection items, but I told my hubby to just give it a try anyway. Lo and behold, it worked for him! Maybe J. Crew caught on after Tuesday. I feel that if they are going to put stipulations on what we can buy with the promo code, it should be spelled out EXACTLY what is valid with and without the code. I bet there were so many disappointed customers who wanted to buy some expensive items but couldn't because the code was not valid for those items. J. Crew is sneaky at times!

  30. I agree about the quality of the Maya cardi. Remember how J.Crew merinos used to last season after season? That time is obviously past. I paid about $70 for my Maya on promo, wore it 3x and already it looks like it's ready for the trash! If I were a J.Crew employee I would NEVER go to work dressed like that - who would want to buy your sweater after seeing it in such condition?

On another note... can anyone comment on the fit/comfort of the suede and patent Juliets? I've been debating pulling the trigger for the past 2 days and I'm just not sure.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sorry, but I have to vent here:

I had placed a rather large order when the sale section was updated on Monday. Received the INSIDER code exactly 2 hrs after the order. I called CS for an adjustment and she refused to give me one stating they have made couple adjustments for me already this year. I asked for the order number she was referring to and the ones she gave me were once for a final sale item where they sent me the WRONG stuff and an order number for last December.
I spoke to her Supervisor and she said she couldn't give me an adjustment on a prior order. I know their disclaimer on the coupon code email, but how can an order placed on the SAME day when the promo started not be eligible for an adjustment considering how they send out emails at various time of the day. Anyways...I was able to get an adjustment for this order but I'm not happy with the kind of CS I received. The supervisor kept on repeating herself and tried to lecture me and said this is a one time courtesy and I will not be getting anymore adjustments in the future. I told her this is not a COURTESY or a favor for me but I am entitle to a price adjustment if I placed an order on the SAME day. I'm sick and tired of the inconsistent CS I'm getting from JC...

Sorry once again for my frustration...

  32. OT: has anyone tried the Cadogan Ankle boots? I'm not sure whether I should go up half size since I don't have a thin ankle. Thanks!

  33. Has anyone seen the Pearl Twisted Hammock Necklace in person or own it?

    http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/jewelry/necklaces/PRDOVR~22599/22599.jsp

I'm debating on the Pearl color or
Light Amethyst because I'm not sure exactly what color this is from the picture.

  34. Slightly OT but to respond to what jcmama said (and I TOTALLY agree with your frustrations - have had similar experiences of my own as of late) I receive J.Crew emails to 2 different email addresses and consistently received promotional emails to one address hours before the other. What I find strange in this case is that my gmail account, to which mail is generally delivered much faster than my hotmail account, is the one that's always hours behind. I have to assume that they are sending out the emails in "groups" periodically throughout the day. Regardless, I can't believe they would give someone such a problem honoring a promo code just because they're in one of the later email groups!

My advice: forget about your email and just be sure to always check JCA before placing any orders :)

  35. I couldn't resist the temptation. I have loved the Silk Ruffle Cascade Jacket ever since I tried it on at my B&M, but they only had it in wild blackberry. I fell in love with the warm redwood color once I saw it online, so I pulled the trigger. And was surprised that I had free shipping when I checked out! Yay!

Has anyone seen the warm redwood color IRL?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Laura,
Hadn't even noticed that iced houndstooth coat - now I'm intrigued, though not nearly enough to order it. I don't have free shipping, and that annoys me bec. I object to how j.crew plays favorites (either have a promotion, or don't). Then there's the fact the jacket is double-breasted - that, to me, usually means I have to wear it buttoned to like the look.

Aren't you one my fellow Greenwich tweed-philes? Wore my skirt yesterday, with my new brown puffer vest and the greenwich tweed handbag. Made me wish j.crew still made things like that ...

  37. Dara -

I have the black suede and patent juliets. I think they are tts, and reasonably comfortable. I wouldn't wear them to walk long distances but they seem fine for normal wear. I really like them with jeans and cords. (they do show quite a bit of "toe cleavage.").

    ReplyDelete
  38. Jcmama: I hear ya! I also have had my issues with inconsistent CS lately and have been lectured on the "one time courtesy" speel. I am just cutting down on my spending with JC and going elsewhere. You get so tired of dealing with J Crew and all the issues that come up with pricing, sizing and defective clothes.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Has anyone found a way to reduce the pilling on the Maya? I have one that I've worn about five times and have had the same experience as many of you other ladies? Does a sweater brush work? What about one of those electric pill removers? I'm worried about the delicate fabric, though. Oh JC, why must you do this to us on such a gorgeous cardigan?! I love the style, but I don't want to look like I just rolled out of bed!

    ReplyDelete
  40. La Belle Helene, I am so envious of your Greenwich Tweed and that's why I see items like this Midnight Iced Houndstooth and I wonder if I will regret not ordering it but it's definitely pricey and no one that I know of has seen it. The double breasted is another issue as I have enough "breasted" as it is. Has anyone seen it in the store? What about their Collection store?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Is the coat in the holiday catalogue? My sensors usually sound around tweed, but then that catalogue was styled so absurdly the jacket may have been hidden under a sequined plaid boyfriend blazer worn by a pant-less model cavorting underneath a thousand-year old tree imported to Chile from the foothills of Italy by a llama.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Kris - Thanks so much for the review!

Kristin - A sweater shaver has helped my Maya look a lot better. I, sadly, feel compelled to use it on ALL my J.Crew sweaters everytime I wear them - especially dream (which I no longer buy) and cashmere!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Be careful La Belle, images like that are so spot on, they will hire you instantly! I didn't see it in the catalog, but I didn't check every layer - or under the llamas!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I took the bait today! I got two more marzipan cardigans and two more velvet flower pins.

I love the marzipan cardigans. I'm in Chicago but I have a super high tolerance for cold and I'm always running warm anyway, so I love lightweight cardigans. I have some of the Jackie cardigans but I'm really hating cotton sweaters now, I much prefer a fine-gauge merino. The marzipans are really nice, the fit is beautiful. I don't really like the buttons but no problem there. I've got marzipan in black, latte, dusk, pink, and now hydrangea.

Another cardigan I'm really liking is the bling in the soft violet color. It's a little too sheer for winter wear (in Chicago at least), but should be fine for the other 3 seasons. The only other color I like is the guava, I might get that later.

As for the velvet flower pins, dang I love these things! I've now got 1 slate, 2 blacks, and 2 purples all bought on sale. I hope another slate shows up, I want 2. I wish that they were available in pastel colors.

  45. I also noticed that the silk of the Frances cami is MUCH thinner than that of the Victoria cami from last year. I have the Frances cami in the graphite print and you can literally the waistband of dark pants/skirts underneath it. I have the Victoria cami in a darker color so I'm not sure if the lighter colors of the Victoria were also seethrough but I am definitely glad I didn't pay full price for my Frances b/c it's paper thin.

And Genny, I am so sad about there not being any red cards this year but you are probably right about that.

    ReplyDelete
  46. You'd think SOMEBODY at J Crew would wise up about the pilling on their sweaters. Seems everyone agrees the colors are so pretty, but for the price they don't hold up. Thanks for commiserating.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Btw, for removing pills, I like to use a standard man's razor, the double or triple blades are good, and shave the pilled areas. Make sure the razors are sharp, don't use the same razor too many times or you'll just pull on the pills instead of lopping them off cleanly.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I was wondering if anyone got a latest catalogue with a $25 gift card in it? I just received one.
The coupon is for $25 to be used only in stores, before Dec6th.

I think J.Crew is giving me a hint to shop at stores more often, since 95% of my purchased are done online.

Btw, if there is no code for free shipping - I don't buy anything, simply refuse to pay that ridiculously high s&h charge.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I have been nagging my husband to go ahead and get my Christmas present(s) while I have the free shipping on my account plus the INSIDER code...hope he takes the very obvious hint :)

  50. OT, but if anyone is looking for the Cashmere V-Neck Cardigan in Soft Blossom, I noticed on Monday morning that it was on sale online (along with one other color I can't remember). I went to my local B&M and happened to see one in my size. They called CS to confirm the sale price of 119.99 (since that color was sold out online) and honored the online sale price, even though it was still full price in the store.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sorry, the correct color name is Dusty Blossom, not Soft Blossom!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yeah... what is up with JCrew suddenly putting acrylic in sweaters? If I want acrylic in my sweaters I will buy them at Gabriel Brothers for $4.99 because that is all they are worth. Yuck.

    ReplyDelete
  53. anyone notice the sequined V neck cardi on the Womens' "new arrivals" page? Looks like a new beautiful sequined cardi...shown in gray...I can't find it anywhere on the website for sale, though..??

    ReplyDelete
  54. The print graphite Frances cami is a silk cotton blend. It is a very nice piece of fabric. Things show through it mainly because of its light color. Personally, I like it better than the silk Frances or the silk Victoria because the ruffles lay nicely due to the lighter weight.

The weight of fabric and yarn doesn't directly correlate to its quality. I used to sew a lot and I can tell you that a fine, nearly transparent voile costs a lot more than a heavier cotton broadcloth.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'm so sad. I wanted to order a jacket that was pat of the J Crew Collection, however I can not find it online anymore. I can't remember the name so CS can't locate it for me. I'm hoping someone can help me out. Here is the description: bright pink, believe raspberry color, buttons down front, hits below the hip. I believe it was mohair or tweed...Can anyone ID??

  56. I purchased the stadium cloth Friday coat in heather graphite and returned it right away. I purchased the stadium cloth Dani peacoat last year, and expected the Friday to be as thick, plush, and cozy, but it definitely was not. I thought it had much thinner material. The chest/shoulder area had strange shaping to it and the overall fit just wasn't 'on' like the other j. crew coats i've had. i was really bummed, as i think the coat is beautiful...hopefully others who have purchased it are having better luck with the fit, and don't notice a difference in the material like i did. :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. HermesCrew, have you tried calling the NYC Collection Store? I thought I read that someone else bought that coat at the NYC store when Jenna was there. I saw it online earlier this week but I don't see it now. Thought it was something like $895.

  59. Dara, chiming in a little late on the Juliets--I think that they look great but are barely OK in terms of comfort. I'd hoped that the chunkier heel and rounder toe would be good for long days at the office, but because these are cut low to show toe cleavage, I find that they hit the joint of my big toe in the wrong spot (not as bad as the spring 09 Cates though). I took my usual size.

  60. I woke up in the middle of the night Monday and checked the sale section, since I couldn't sleep anyhow. Got the fleur de lis cardigan and burnished rubber riding boots. Odd, the only one left of each was my size! Hours later, I got the promo code for the 20% off. I wrote in and asked that the discount be applied to my order, and they quickly wrote back saying it would be!

Couldn't resist the watercolor Evie tank and the paisley perfect shirt, as long as the 20% plus free shipping on my account were only going to last a few days. . . LOVe the silk/cotton shirt material. It tucks in nicely and stays flat underneath sweaters, plus feels yummy on the skin.

  61. OT-does anyone know how the wool ruffle-front coat fits (or any style like it)? the description says it has a slight A-line shape, and the buttons don't seem to run all the way down, so I'm afraid it's going to look slightly balloon-y on the bottom half.

    thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Cleo, Thanks so much that is the coat!! I will try and hunt it down today:)

    ReplyDelete
  63. cinnamonruffles, thanks for the warning. Gah, J.Crew! Quit being so damn CHEAP!

Looks like now that INSIDER is over, as expected, more items have been added to the sale section (the long sherpa hoodie, more colors of the cashmere shawl popover, etc.).

    ReplyDelete
  64. With the promo I ordered the silk ruffle cascade jacket (in blackberry), the wool ruffle-front coat, the super 120s Lizza jacket, and a t-shirt (hopefully without holes) just to finish it off with the discount... yay I've been waiting for this promo :)
