J.Crew and the Shirtdress {success!}

"Thanks!" to Angela who let us know about a news report on shirt-dresses over at the New York Times (click here to hear the audio & see images).

On the Street | Buttoned-Down
Produced by Simone S. Oliver

In this summer of financial discontent, fashion, as always, reflects the mood. Just look at all the women on the street who have turned to classic shirtdresses.

The news piece references a J.Crew shirt-dress that was a popular seller and priced at $70. (Although, not mentioned is the particular style.)

I personally am a big fan of the shirt-dress- especially the ones from J.Crew [circa Spring/Summer 2007 & 2008]. It's great in that it can be easily styled- dressy or casual. It's usually one of my "go-to" pieces for Spring and Summer.

What are your thoughts on the news piece? Are you a fan of shirt-dresses? Do you like the look & style of shirt-dresses?

  1. I am a huge fan of the shirt dress...it's kind of like a great pair of jeans, there's one for everyone and it can be dressed up and down and it's easy to wear.

My favourite styles have a bit of drape, movement and a slight a-line shape to the skirt.

Hi Cheryl (and for others that may be interested):

This is off topic, but I did promise to go back and look at the Club Monaco Blazer (the "Monaco" Blazer). It is indeed a knit-sweater jacket with a polyester lining. It comes only in the heathered charcoal shown on-line and the fabric is 70% acrylic and 30% wool. HTH.

  2. Not this one.... it looks like a long apron. Maybe it's the material?

  3. The draw string shirt dress (#14940) was pictured worn IRL in this past Sunday's NY Times in the Style section.

  4. I have a couple of Jennifer shirtdresses from the Paris catalog and they are really nice. Heavyweight stretch jersey with a tailored top and a self tie belt. Nicely fitted with a little bit of swing in the skirt and details like brass relief buttons on the placket and cuffs. So comfortable and versatile for fall. I love to wear them with high boots.

  5. I adore shirt dresses! I have at least 6 in my closet! My J.Crew favorite is the one with the anchor print on the skirt! I wear that one a lot. I also sport some of J.Crew's "tux" shirt dresses from (2 winters?) ago. I love them! I hope J.Crew will be making more!

  6. I don't know, this one looks a little 50's housewife to me.

  7. Since I have lived and worn this trend in the early 90's I am not too hip to go through it again. I owned about 4 shirt dresses in the day. I do have one white one that I got with crocheted buttons from BR in summer 2007 that I like but I won't be buying anymore....I got such a deal on the above dress it was insane.

  8. These shirtdresses do not work for me. I would feel like Betty Draper, but not in a good way.

  9. I love the shirdress in general, but I especially love the more A-line ones, like the one pictures. I'm not opposed to a straighter, more menswear-y one but I like that floofy Far from Heaven thing so much.

I don't recall seeing this in either a B&M or online! I would grab this immediately at $70.

  10. This particular one looks a little too June Cleaver-ish.

  11. If you're interested in the Bermuda shirt dress featured in the article, I have one up for sale on Ebay in a 12-piece clothing lot that starts at $30.00 or Buy-it-Now for $100. I need the money for college. The dress is NWOT, pink, sz. 4. Seller's ID is aperitif18. Thanks!

  12. I totally have been living in shirtdresses all summer. They are so easy to wear and make for such a neat, pulled together look. The J Crew ones did not fit me properly but ones from Theory in their stretch cotton are worth every penny!

  13. For the most part JCrew shirtdresses do not fit me. I have found one in the past few years that was brown cotton with pretty buttons but I have yet to wear it.

  14. I love mine! I bought it in the Summer of 07 when I worked at the crew. It is navy and white striped linen with camp style sleeves and tuxedo ruffles. It is also lined with the softest white cotton. So fresh and classic!
