J.Crew Email: Revisiting an old favorite...

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Marietta, who let us know about J.Crew's latest email.

The email reminds us that their offer for free shipping on orders of $175+ with promo code BEACH expires 6/24/09.

The email also showcases the classic Tretorn® Canvas Sneakers (Item 18317 ; $68.00). According to J.Crew's website: "Established in 1891 and considered the first luxury sport shoe, Tretorn sneakers—synonymous with good taste and practicality—have been worn on (and off) tennis courts around the world. This lightweight canvas shoe, inspired by a vintage sneaker from the 1950s, epitomizes everything we love about the iconic Swedish brand and features new, exclusive colors you won't find anywhere else."

It's clear J.Crew loves these sneakers from their description of them. What are your thoughts on the shoes? Do you love them or would you leave them? Do you think they are worth the $68 price tag? :)

  1. I love them. I had leathers tretorns in high school, big deal back then. This canvas style looks wonderful! A nice change from my white jack percells. I am considering the stone.

  2. They were $55 last week, disappeared, and are now $68. :/

I had white + pink ones when I was a kid, so it's kind of a sentimental favorite for me. But, I'm not really interested in paying $68 for a canvas tennis shoe right now. If the price goes down or I can use a sale code, I'll reconsider.

  3. These don't look as cute or as comfortable as the ones I remember wearing in high school. I think they had a terry-cloth lining, and the side stripe came in a bunch of different color choices (mine were peach-my favorite 80's color). Anyway, I just bought white Jack Purcells, so I won't be buying these.

  4. I think they look an awful lot like the Jack Percells they've been selling all season. They're only ok for me. And canvas sneakers + summer = hot, stinky feet :)

  5. One of the sample sale websites just had a Tretorn sale...what timing.

  6. Not for me...I'll stick with my Converse Chucks :)...They are a cute throwback to the preppy days though!

  7. They are pretty cute, I like them!

  8. These are also not the tretorns I remember wearing. Mine were white canvas or leather with a blue or pink sideways V logo on the side. They definatly did not have a rubber front!

  9. I like them a lot and bought them in stone last week.

  10. I would not wear these. Don't care to relive a trend. What is the saying...if you lived through it once don't revisit. Well, sometimes I still do:) lol. But not this one...maybe if they had a TRUE 80's vibe anc color AND came in leather.

  11. No thanks... still suffering PTSD from being beaten up by the hockey varsity team girls in high school -- I saw these sneakers through my blurry vision while laying on the grass... sad but true.

  12. Wish they were the more pointy ones with a colored stripe in canvas from the 80's. This style makes my size 9.5 feet look huge, just like my Jack Purcells do.

  13. OT - Has anyone had issues with their Travel Trench? I wore mine for the first time today (forgot about it in the back of my coat closet). It is coming apart at one of the seams and the sleeve lining is so long it is hanging out of the sleeves. Would be more acceptable to see the lining if it wasn't bright golden yellow against the light khaki. The seam separation is most disappointing, though. The jacket is in no way tight so WTF is with the poor quality? It is splitting right on the belt line so kind of hidden and only 1.5 inches long but I can't get over it to even think of wearing it again. I am looking for my receipt to return it as I believe I paid full price. :(

  14. As some of you have mentioned, the pointy-toed white canvas versions were cuter and I think, more feminine. Especially with the terry lining and side V in sweet colors. These are too much like the Purcells, and Converse All-stars that I have already. With a few pair in white, purple, madras and faded denim, I really don't desire yet another pair of sneaks. Although they are very 50's and kind of cool...

  15. I've tried a pair of tretorns before Jcrew started selling them recently. Not for me. I just can't wear flat shoes anymore, and don't want to mess with shifting insoles. They look nice, though.

  16. My pop's a tennis nut and a Tretorn addict forever. He had me in them years ago, and they were super comfortable but they wore out really quick. I'm going to pass this time around, but I'll let my pop know they're back in style, which means more readily available. He's one of the few people that haven't embraced online shopping yet, so when he sees Tretorns right in front of him, he'll buy three pairs at once.

  17. Oh noooo!!! Final sale is back =(

  18. OT: What the EW?!?! Back to the dreaded Final Sale. If I get an email telling me that it's the sale I've "been waiting for," I will heartily guffaw. Now that FS is back there's not much chance I'll be pulling the trigger on the last lingerers in my cart.

  19. oh god, final sale, kill me now :(

  20. Noooo....final sale? Ugh! Just when we got happy & relaxed.

  22. CaptainCrew,
Sorry to hear about your poor quality travel trench. I hope people keep posting about these issues and let us know on this blog!

I, for one, check over each of my JCrew purchases with a fine tooth comb now after having so many defective items from them. (People that say they have never had a defective item must not order much!) B/C I have had a large number of new items that I paid full price for too.

I hold garments up in the sunlight and check, check, check. Of course, this won't help if a garment starts to fall apart after a few wears as others have reported...but, at least, at first I am OK.

  23. PS

Lining in my Gayle ruffle trench from last season was long in one arm too. It kind of bugs me but it is not hanging so far down as yours.

  24. Oh no Final Sale ... the perfect antidote to my JC shopping addiction. I guess I'm done for a while, give the budget a rest til the real fall rollout.

  25. Ruffles,
I agree. I detest final sale. I know others buy but I truthfully do not.

  26. CaptainCrew,

That is a shame about your jacket. Really goes to show poor quality sewing/cheap labor.

JCrew thinks they can raise prices and let quality go by the way side.
I for one do not fall for that old trick: Raise prices. Ladies will pay and think it is fancy dancy and pay top dollar regardless!

I really hope you can find a new coat or get your money back. :)
I am going to start checking my stuff like Summer does!
