J.Crew's Easterly Fish Board Shorts For Men

A big "thanks!" to J.Crew Guy In Canada who let us know that a pair of J.Crew swim trunks was featured over at GQ (click here). What is amazing about the pair of Easterly Fish Board Short (Item 11706), a "collector's item in quick-drying nylon with an exceptional print from a top Italian mill", is that it retails for $135. Has J.Crew offered swim shorts in this price range before? (Maybe I haven't noticed it until now.)

Although the school of fish design is cute, I personally prefer the 7" Solid Board Short (Item 91258; $54.50) and the Wild Lily Floral Board Short (Item 13898; $59.50). But to each their own! ;)

What are your thoughts on the
Easterly Fish Board Shorts? Do you like or dislike them? Would you get them? What are your favorite pair of swim trunks from J.Crew? :)

  1. The School of Fish swim shorts are cute. Cute = my dh won't wear them. He will wear any of the cute print boxers, which I love! I've purchased him multiple styles of swim shorts and really can't pick a favorite...maybe the brown/white floral shorts from last year.

    Sorry o/t guys but are
    these
new sandals not yet on the JCrew site? In the second small window from the left, I noticed the model's change in shoe style.

  2. My bf would probably go for the solid color shorts. I wish they would make these for ladies! I like the tropical floral and lavender pineapple print ones (not sure if these are online anymore), too. :)

  3. Maybe it's just me but those look rather short. My teenage son would freak if you could see too much of his knees :)

  4. The lavender pineapple print were listed at $135 as well, I believe. My husband will wear most anything if I like it. He's very secure in himself and likes to have a giggle as well so doesn't mind even if he thinks my suggestions could be a bit goofy.

Like most North Americans though, he doesn't like the trunks to be too short or too tight. Confidence and modesty together. The school of fish trunks don't look as young as some of their other prints, IMO.

  5. I also thought these look really short! And seem kind of expensive... But I like them.

  6. I think the print is cute and my 5 year-old son would love them...my DH, not so much. I can't believe they are $135 though!

  7. $135 is way too much for a men's swimsuit! My husband has gotten several really nice ones from Old Navy in the last couple of years, each around $20, and they look just as good as the JC ones. If he really wanted a fancy "upscale" one, I would probably get him one from Vineyard Vines. They have some great patterns and they're all about $80.

  8. The print, for whatever reason, reminds me of boxers more than board shorts. And I agree with grape_squishee, they look rather short! XD But maybe the times are changing for men's swimwear!

  9. Toast: Too funny- Now that you mentioned it, the pair of fish trunks DOES look like a pair of boxer shorts! ;)

Grape_Squishee: I thought they looked short too, but I wasn't certain for sure. Maybe the trend with men's swim trunks is going shorter. (As oppose to the super long trunks, past the knee, that I remember being popular). I wonder if J.Crew has ever introduced Speedo-esque swim briefs. ;)

  10. Alexis, I don't recall ever seeing the Speedo-esque swimwear for men, but they do usually have some 7" trunks and chino shorts too, for that matter. Something you see more in Europe than here IME.

  11. Anybody who knows anything about surf culture would know that these are definitely NOT board shorts! No self-respecting surfer would be caught dead wearing trunks with (gasp!) elastic in the back!! These resemble underwear more than swim apparel!

  12. ^ You just never know what will take off as the next trend, especially in niche cultures. Maybe the surfers are ready to retire the board shorts and go back to the "Jeff Spicoli" trunks once again. LOL

  13. I love my hubby, but $135 is pretty pricey for a fish print swimsuit!

  14. OMG - Jeff Spicoli trunks!!! I almost shot tea out of my nose when I read that. I watch that movie every time it comes on. Classic. Even Family Guy spoofed the Phoebe Cates bikini in the pool scene.

Thanks for the laugh of the day xoxo

  15. I checked out the GQ article and I recommend others do the same. It is actually a very interesting slide show featuring a number of "board" shorts for men. A couple of them look more like "short-shorts" - Tom Ford, Diesel, Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Penguin (which is making a huge comeback with the 20-something guys I know). J.Crew's fish shorts were definitely not the shortest ones in the mix.

Granted, it may be geared more to the American stylisto or the European guy who is used to the shorter cuts, but I think this may be the coming trend. Tone those legs guys!

Oh, and regarding the Madewell harem pants post, I notice that designers are really pushing these for the upcoming season. I had to laugh at this Glamour link:

    http://www.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2008/10/to-wear-or-not-to-wear.html

    Should be an interesting summer.

  16. I really like these, but prefer the long board short styles. And I don't think my legs deserve trunks at this price point. Maybe if I swam like Michael Phelps, but otherwise too pricey for me.

  17. The Glamour post is indeed from October 2008, but for spring 2009. That's fashion on the runway, of course. Six months ahead of the real season.

  18. jcrew guy in Canada - what did you think of the other shorts in the article? You like?

At the Tom Ford, Louis Vuitton, etc pricing, I'm sure a lot of guys are right there with you.

  19. Hey CaptainCrew, like I said I'm a board short kinda guy. Most of the trunks in the article are just a little too short for me. And seriously, who's buying the $800 (or so) trunks?

I'll stick to the $50 to $70 range.

  20. These look a bit short.....would only work on the right guy or else could be dangerously gross! Most men need to keep their upper thighs covered ;)

  21. I think this isn't a terrible choice of swimwear, but if you are not older than 30 it is a hard look to pull off.
