A big "thanks!" goes to JTS (check out her great blog: "j'adore these stores") who shared with us a fantastic article (including images) from WWD:J.Crew's Lighter Note
Play’s the thing for fall at J.Crew. Its signature mix of blazers, sweaters and chinos taken from the boys and girlish frills, i.e. ruffles and Chantilly lace, were done with fun in mind. “We paid attention to things we know make people happy,” said creative director Jenna Lyons Mazeau of the T-shirts sporting giant jewel-encrusted necks and dog prints. “Everyone needs a little levity right now.” That statement was echoed in the light-as-air, lavender feathered gilet.
On the men’s side, it was all about the unexpected. Classic pieces such as chunky cardigans, chalk-striped suits, buffalo-plaid sport shirts and trenchcoats sported unique touches such as leather buttons or lighter-weight fabrics that updated the trends and made them modern.

Cargo pants are nothing new...I have 3 JCrew pairs from 2004...still going strong.

"One belt...5 different ways" OR "5 belts the SAME way". The stylist "Gayle" needs some imagination enhancement IMO.
ReplyDeleteThe lavender gilet looks odd to us now, heading in to spring. It will probably look lovely in September/October when we want something warm.
ReplyDeleteI tend to buy more from Fall/Winter than Spring/Summer. From the brief slideshow it looks like J.Crew is sticking to basics with a few twists thrown in. I am always excited to see the J.Crew coats. I don't expect the same great deals we had this winter, but I will likely pick up at least one new coat next winter.

I love reading all these posts about what is new at J.Crew, because J.Crew itself seems to be behind, considering its the same old stuff on their website! I am intrigued by the "dog print" tees, but I am a little concerned with all this feather nonsense. We will see what J.Crew has to offer this season...so far from what I've seen on these blogs I have to say I have a mixed emotion of excitement and discontent. Do me right J.Crew!

I really love the graphic tees... I cannot get enough of them. I just wish they came in the heavier weight ringspun cotton that the French market tees came in last summer.

houndlvr67: too too funny!!! I love belts...but this slideshow shows that the obsession has gone too far. All but one outfit was without a belt. And I don't know about the rest of you, but I definitely don't wear leather belts around my waist in the middle of summer...eck, gross when it is nearing 100 with almost 90% humidity!
ReplyDeleteI belt quite a bit (well, when the weather isn't too hot), and would love to own more belts, but the prices of J. Crew belts are a bit out of my price range, except on sale. For instance, that gorgeous purple jeans belt? Can't really justify buying it unless it is on sale with some % off...
That furry vest thing was hilarious. Reminds me of something from Three's Company!

weezel - the BF military jacket is quite stylish. The photos really don't do it justice. But perhaps you have tried it on already and I'm telling you something contrary to your experience. :-{
ReplyDeletePersonally, I was really impressed with the jacket. The fabric is super soft and it's so comfortable on. It's not overly tailored but still has shape and I appreciate the ease for layering. This, and the travel trench are the two jackets I'll take on my upcoming trips. I can see myself using both of these for years to come.
I can't really make out anything clearly in the new arrivals but there is a lack of color IMO.
OT: i live in baltimore and it hasn't exactly turned to spring yet. is it too "early" to wear my white atelier jacket?

ReplyDeleteThe jacket paired with shorts looks like a take from last year's Lexington, with the black trim. Nice color combo for a neutral jacket, dark charcoal and black.
WTF is that furry thing? That looks like something you would see down the runway in the movie Zoolander. Gross. Everything else looks promising...not terribly exciting, but promising. I like that ruffles are going to continue into fall, I have invested heavily in them this spring because I like them so much.

ReplyDeleteWear it on a sunny spring like day that nears say the upper 50's/low 60's. Most rules about white are not applicable anymore. Otherwise, I would wait until after Easter...that is my "rule".

ReplyDeleteI must say, and many of you may disagree with me, that I am very tired of the belt-over-blazer/jacket/cardigan look. I do not wear this because it does not flatter me at all, and most of the time I just think it looks ridiculous. For me, belts are used to hold up my pants, or maybe to enhance the shape of a dress, and nothing else...
Wear white when you want... I avoid white pants & outerwear in the winter for practical reasons (salt and grim getting all over them from walking the slush and brushing up against dirty cars). I guess it depends on the weight of the fabric too.

ReplyDeleteOld rule is No white until after Memorial day. Also, another one states not to wear white until Easter Sunday. My understanding that the current rule is the weather dictates what you wear and when you wear white. The later is what I go by.
ReplyDeleteHi Stacy. Down south, the rule is not to wear stark white until after Easter. Now, I don't know if that's "official" anymore, but it still works for me. I'd say you can wear off-white anytime. In Baltimore, you'll probably have plenty of chilly weather after Easter, so you should be able to get a lot of wear out of your jacket.
ReplyDeleteThese new items look interesting, but like others have said, nothing really *different* (except the weird fur/hair items -- sorry, but I'll pass!) from looks that JCrew has already created. I do love the belt-over-blazer look that the models sport, but again like others -- I'd feel silly wearing something like that, and can't pull it off. (You could also make the argument that they are just making it "artistic" for the photo shoot, I guess....?)

ReplyDeleteInteresting, but I'm not getting excited just yet. A few of the pieces I definitely want to see up close. Other than that they are taking the belt thing too far. It's a great idea but does not work for every look. Perhaps they want to push their belts more, which *are* good quality.

ReplyDeleteYou know what I would absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see on J. Crew's website? An article of clothing, like a sweater or jacket, worn different ways by women of different ages. Ex. show me ways how a young woman in her 20s would wear an Astrid jacket alongside a woman in her 30s, 40s, 50s/60s. Remember when we had mixed feelings about the cassette jacket as shown in the recent Harper's Bazaar issue? I would love to SEE realistic, stylish options of how that same jacket can be worn in different ways by women of various decades. Gayle/Jenna: Are you listening? Oh, can you please mix up the models a bit, too. I'd love to see how an outfit looks on a size 10/12 woman versus a size 6 model.

ReplyDeleteThis is OT, but have any of you purchased the crackle claudia pumps? Does the toe box area stretch out at all? I tried some on and the toe area is too snug. The rest of the shoe is fine. I'm wondering whether they're worth buying and paying a shoe repair person to stretch them if that's feasible. I've never had shoes professionally stretched, though. Also, does the crackle finish come off easily? I like it as is. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteI own the crackle metallic mary janes. They are suede so you should be able to have them stretched. The stretching process may make some of the metallic fleck off if it pulls away from the suede during the stretch. Kind of like having a piece of tape on your hand and then flexing it in different ways. Some of the tape loses its stickiness and separates from your hand. The plastic lining should stretch too, without a problem.
ReplyDeleteI've worn mine several times already and haven't noticed any flaking off on the floor or peeling away from the shoe. I'm very careful with these shoes though. IMO they are delicate and should be treated with care. They are not made for long walks on city streets during your lunch hour KWIM.
If you think you may have shoes stretched in the future, invest in your own shoe stretcher to use at home. It's like a shoe tree but with a long bolt that expands the wooden "foot" inside the shoe as you turn the handle. Having your own stretcher let's you stretch as much as you need, no more, as well as ensure you are not damaging the shoe by trying to stretch too fast. I think I got mine for $25 a few years ago.

anon 4:19 - I have really wide feet (EE)and generally have to avoid J Crew shoes so the stretching idea really caught my attention. What kind of shoes have you used them on?
ReplyDeleteI think one reason J.Crew is styling belts over sweaters and jackets lately is because lots of their pants don't have belt loops: University, Academy , Bistro, Durham, favorite-fit wool crepe suiting, Keaton, Mosaic and Mahali dot cafe capris, stretch cotton sateen crops and others.
ReplyDeleteThat's quite a few pairs that can't use a belt. I don't know if that's the norm for J.Crew but I do prefer belts to be worn on the pants myself, not the jackets.
tld51371 - I have used the stretcher on many types of shoes and sandals. There are different styles of stretchers for specific types of shoes and boots. Check out the link here to see what I mean.

I believe it could stretch most any material but I would be careful on textured synthetic material, if you have such shoes. It may flatten out the texture during the stretch because the texture is used by pressing the material into a mold.
I have never used "stretching" spray on the shoes, but for very stiff leather I have used Pledge furniture polish sprayed on a cloth and rubbed into the leather to soften it.
I was a personal friends with the cobbler in another city, before I moved to my current location. He gave me the basic stretcher as a gift. Following his advice I learned a lot about shoes and how to care for them like a pro. I am a self-confessed shoe addict so make every effort to protect my many investments.

I wish they'd put out more clothes that feel like solid everyday items, but with that extra finishing that makes J Crew special. The lavender gilet looks like an early April Fool's joke!

ReplyDeleteFYI- Westport, CT had several sizes of the Coralie suede heels in light eucalyptus and daffodil for $69.99 (I think that was the marked price, they were definitely less than $99). Far less than the $140 online if anyone is interested, and NO final sale signs to be seen.
