How lovely is the Marie coat from the images at J.Crew!?! And the current price makes this coat even more attractive! Although, this coat (with its "slight cocoon shape") seems like the type that I would need to see and try on in person. (And unfortunately, this item is catalog/jcrew.com only.) :)

I have the Marie coat in majestic purple. The colour is definitely more of a bluish purple, comparable to the Jackie twinset and kelly blouse in the same colour. I love the colour and the double-knit fabric, which has a bit of stretch and is very comfortable. The fabric also retains a fresh look for years.
This coat is generously cut IMO. The website copy says it has a slight cocoon shape, which is a major design element of the coat. The cocoon shape is not really evident on the model in the photographs online or in catalogues but it is evident as soon as you put it on. If you are pear-shaped, this is not a good coat for you. It is designed for people who are straight or apple-shaped as there is room in the middle and it tapers in at the bottom. Pear shapes will have too much room around the waist and it won't be as flattering as a cinched-waist coat like the Lady Day or Madeleine, any style with a belt. There is no inside pocket in this coat either, it is pretty basic in design.The coat is a little longer than it looks on the model as well. I am 5'7" with long legs and it falls to the lower part of my thigh. Overall, the coat is not crisply tailored, it is a relaxed, casual coat. The raglan sleeves and seaming darts give it ease and comfort. The sleeves are roomy as one would expect in a more relaxed garment. I ordered my regular size and I can layer a sweater, suit jacket or puffer vest underneath. I didn't want to go down a size as I have several very fitted coats and I wanted one that allows me layering options for cold weather and is more casual for a change from my work life, which is all business suits. If you want it to be more fitted, a smaller size may be your best bet.

This coat is a thumbs down for me mainly because of the color and the fabric. Even at the low price of $129 + add'l 30% off I'm not going to keep it or purchase it in any other color. (Just a note, the one I rec'd today is the one that went missing so lucky me, I have another Marie coming that I'll have to return.)
Add'l details:- the collar is meant to be worn up, you can't put it down if you want to;
-I'm 5'7", 130 lbs., curvy with boxy hips & it fits TTS (ordered a size 4) but if you have any more than a bump of a rear the coat will hug it and the coat above your rear will look billowy between the rear and upper back. Maybe size up if you're curvy;
-the fabric is scratchy, not soft, to the touch, but not itchy;
-I dislike the seems along side the outside of each arm and I dislike the buttons;
-and finally it's comfortable but not a keeper for me.
I had high hopes for Marie to replace my mid-thigh casual coat from 9 years ago but the Marie isn't it. I wanted casual but this coat is just blah (as Snoopy would say). I also have a habit of building high hopes around items that never live up to my expectations. I hope it works for others. :)

My review of the Marie Coat: I ordered the heather majestic purple, which is a lovely purple/blue-ish color. I was so excited to try it on since J. Crew winter coats are always so flattering, even with lots of bulky sweaters and layers we need to stay warm here in the NE. I ordered a size 4 (I'm 5'7", 140 lbs. with an athletic build--narrower hips, straight waist, and more solidly built than the model in the picture), However, when I put it on, it was incredibly disappointing. The coat was boxy through the shoulders, torso, and then narrower on the hips and thighs. There is no back vent, which probably makes the shape of it worse. It was way too loose in the torso (both front and back), and made me feel like a huge blueberry. Not exactly the look I was going for. :(
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure that ordering down a size would help (I am consistently a 4 in J. Crew jackets, blazers, and overcoats), so I'm returning the coat tomorrow and tonight I ordered the Lady Day Coat in size 4 with thinsulate in HMP. I think that will suit me much better.
Don't know if anyone has mentioned this- Lo from The Hills was wearing the victoria ruffle cami in navy on tonight's ep- it looked adorable as always!

ReplyDeleteNow that I have had the Marie coat for a while, I love it even more. As I mentioned in my review, it is not a style for curvy or pear-shaped women as it will not be as flattering for them as other styles. It is loose and relaxed, which is a departure from my usual style. I am able to wear the collar down as long as the top set of buttons is undone and open, in a peacoat style.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it is a casual coat, I wore it to work yesterday over a black pencil skirt suit and one of my fashionista co-workers went crazy over the "retro look". I recall my mother had a similar-shaped coat a few decades ago and it did look really sharp. Another co-worker thought it had a Joan Crawford look with broader shoulders and the taper at the bottom. Of course, I was curious to see what people would think so I deliberately cut through the bistro on my way to the office. ;)
There are other versions of this cocoonish coat silhouette on JCrew's website - Taryn, Astor, and also in several stores so I predict this will be a popular shape in seasons to come. It really looks good over skinny bottoms, whether jeans or a slim skirt. Reminds me of the 1980's styles and I absolutely love it. Certainly won't work for everyone but it is a wonderful addition to my coat closet.
I will post some photos IRL later today so people can get a better idea about the cut, without stylists making their adjustments for the photo shoot.
OT - I notice the Lacquered crackle jacket is available on the website again today, but only in size 4.

ReplyDeleteI placed an order with JCrew. Then the items went on sale so I ordered them again with full intention of returning the higher cost items purchased first.
I just received one shipment, the higher priced items. Today when I look on the website, they have the status of the lower cost items "pre-returned" and "returned". Maybe they anticipate the returns but the kicker is the "pre-returned" items are the lower priced items. (I highly doubt they are so advanced as to have a query in place to designate duplicate orders with price differences to the same customers.)
I know they post "pre-returns" if you call in about a damaged item, etc. This prompts the CS in the store to call in and check why the status says "pre-returned".
Has anyone else seen this on their online order status?
Yes, prereturned means you are not getting the item. It is out of stock. This has happened to me 3 times since July.

It makes me think it's one of those items that won't come in and will be cancelled anyway. I put some things aside to call because it really concerned me. I understand now why they "return" items with a status of shipped, but not yet really returned. Kudos, by the way to their phone CS.

A bit OT, but does anyone have comments on the Stadium Cloth Bridget coat? I've been watching it for months now and I was going to finally get it, but of course now my size is gone. I wanted a 0P but now 2P is my only option. Naturally, it's on final sale. Can anyone provide feedback about how it fits compared with other coats (like last year's double-breasted wool/cashmere Dani, this year's Lucinda, or some of the other coats)?

don't know if it's honestly just IT problems or if they are purposely updating the site with 'sold out' items to create buzz...this morning 100+ items were "added" to the women's sale but they were never available (red note at the bottom about go see the gift guru). i love jcrew, but don't have the patience for that.
ReplyDeleteI have a question that has puzzled me for weeks. Now since Jcrew's sale section does update on a specific time as before (6:45), I have to check it often to see when it is updated. Recently, I usually don't see much updates till around 10am, and then all of sudden, I see the item number increased with new addition to the sale section. But almost all of the new addition items are sold out already. I don't know whether there's something wrong with browser--when there is updates but my browser just doesn't see it; or they just update the sale section with a bunch of sold out items. Does anyone see the same thing? Please, it is driving me crazy.

I'm going to Italy in September (Rome, Florence, Venice, etc.) and want some good traveling shoes that are fashionable yet won't kill my feet. So far, I'm not having any luck. By the way, there are a lot of ugly "comfort" shoes out there!
ReplyDeleteI should probably clarify to my above review (post #1): I am NOT curvy or pear-shaped. I'm shaped like an eraser--evenly distributed top, middle, and bottom (which can be a problem for example, with jeans because never fit my waist if they fit my hips, and are too big in the hips and thighs if they fit in the waist!). I think if you have a similar body type to the model in the picture, it will look beautiful on you.

ReplyDeleteI definitely recommend to bring "flat" shoes. You will walk on stone-paved roads in Italy. So heels would not be comfortable. I would bring "J.Crew Liv flats" or "London Sole flats" if I were you. HTH

ReplyDeleteI would second the recommendation for flat shoes, and I don't think the ballet flats from J Crew will cut it either. You need something with thicker soles. Those cobblestones really kill your feet after you've been walking for 5-6 hours straight. Also bring at least 2 pairs to switch around, as even the best shoes hurt after a while.

I have the Floppy Astrid and I bought it in my normal JC sz and actually the same sz I wore in the berry astrid and any other typical blazer from JC. This is a great jacket! There are ways to deal with the flower. I took it off and put something else-really cute!HTH!

I tend to go by the picture more than the description and it definitely seems to have a more normal silhouette. As a pear shape, I am happy to have been saved by an impulsive decision to buy this coat!

ReplyDeleteHimmiefan - bring flats and walking shoes for Italy! Rome is really hard on the feet and Florence is only slightly better. I didn't bring any J.Crew shoes when I went this summer because I find them to be pretty hard to walk in for long periods of time. My Tory Burch flats were my best friends because they have the elastic in back so I didn't get blisters when my feet swelled from all the walking. Italian women generally wear flats during the day and heels at night, so if you plan to go out in the evenings (which you should!), bring one pair of heels but flats otherwise. And definitely bring one pair of really comfortable flats you can fall back on in case your cute flats give you trouble!
ReplyDeletebeth - i purchased the onyx sequin dress! too cute for words, BUT i was nervous about the fit. i orginally ordered it in my normal dress size. then after placing the order realized the decription said it was very fitted (so it got me thinking...and i normally size up in the suiting dresses), so the next order i placed i ordered the next sie up. however, all of that was completely unneccessary and i ended up needing to sizedown. (then it occurred to me i always size up for my bust, and since this was so open, it was unneccessary) but i think the dress is really cute, very user friendly to those with a big chest, but you will def have to wear a cami underneath, or everything will show. hth - let me know if you have any specific questions. ps - def looks like more then $70!

All throughout Italy, my Cole Haan Nike Air shoes were lifesavers - both the tennie-inspired varieties and the wedges/heels. With the recent perpetual 30% at colehaan.com, the prices (especially on sale items) are quite competitive.
ReplyDeleteThe only ballet flats I found to be useful in Italy were my few pairs of Me Too flats which have slightly thicker rubber soles. There are dozens of colors now and they're always pretty cheap because it's not an expensive brand. Amazon has a bunch: the "nell", "nevada" and "nasha" are cute styles.
Have a fabulous trip! I'm so jealous - Italy is our favorite destination.
anon@ 12:05 - I took a chance on the Lucinda coat because I don't think it's final sale. But how can we tell which items are? The Bridget is priced at $249.99. I thought that all items ending in a .99 price were final sale. I thought only the .00 and .50 items were on promotion but returnable. I'd love to try the Bridget in a size 2P or 0 but I don't want to lose the money if it doesn't fit. Can someone please clarify?

ReplyDeleteI received a Quilted patent-leather Quincy tote (item 99938). I do love this bag! I have been looking for a bag which I can carry my note computer. Quincy hobo was cute but little disappointing because it was not large enough to put my computer. So I decided to buy Quincy tote. First, the color is amazing! “Victorian rose” goes with almost any colors of my clothing: gray, beige, white, navy blue and even yellow. Second, I worried the texture of the leather because someone mentioned the leather of Quincy hobo was very hard. But it is much softer than I expected. Top bands are long enough to use as a shoulder bag. Unlike Uptown tote, this bag is lined with cotton twill. Overall, it is better than my expectation for its price (around $150).
On the other hand, I was truly disappointed with Solid leather opera gloves in dusty rose (item 98621). I loved the dusty rose color of Wide patent leather belt and wanted to match this glove with my belt. However, the color of the opera glove is completely different from the picture shown on web - more like “orange” pink, which reminds me of rubber gloves for housework. J.Crew, please be consistent in colors! Also the cutaway seam makes these guys look more like rubber gloves. Yeah – they are exactly like rubber gloves! Most of retailers (like ZARA) offer opera gloves around $75, which are much better. This product really needs improving.
Thanks BugPin (love that name!) ~ I think I will order the Astrid in size 6, and hope its not too big. To Anon. I have the tissue henley q/ sequins on the placket in champagne & love it, but, I had to get the XS bec. IMO, it runs HUGE ~ usu wear a S, but it was pretty gynormous on.

ReplyDeleteIf my only choices were to walk barefoot around Italian cities - or any cities, for that matter - or wear J.Crew shoes ... I'd be barefoot. J.Crew shoes are the most uncomfortable I've ever tried on. Just the thought of wearing them while walking for hours hurts.
ReplyDeleteComfort shoes may not look as chic, but unhappy feet = unhappy person, whereas nicely shod feet = person who can delight in discovering her surroundings.
I don't have this coate, but do have the lady day coat in this color and LOVE it! The fit is so flattering - and I love the heather majestic purple. Fun color, without being as bright/loud as the dark poppy

Anon @ 11:49 - I tried on the tissue sequin placket henley and found the "v" in front to be way too low (would need to wear a cami under the shirt). Otherwise, the fit was more or less like their other tissue tees. I'm petite and usually find their tissue line to be too large for me in the shoulders... which would probably explain why things tend to droop down lower on me. (That and I have a very small chest. So not much there to help hold things up :)

I too was enticed by the reduced price of the Duchamp print Astor jacket. I got mine last week and am undecided about whether to keep it. Even for $229 with the 30% off, I still need to love it - and I'm not sure I do. Yes it is a bold print, but it seemed almost overwhelming/very loud when I first tried it on and looked in the mirror. If it was a little more tailored/fitted at the waist i think I would like it better.

ReplyDeleteI love the fabric for the sequined henley t - it's really soft. I too have to size one down. The placket is cut kind of deep, so I have to careful to place the shirt properly so I am not exposed. The little bit of sequins is fun, and not enough to be tacky! I got the light pewter, but I will get the champange next time.
ReplyDeletehimmiefan - the nike sandals sounds like it will be fine. You will probably want another pair with closed toes for days that you will be running around in the ruins in the forum in Rome. I didn't really have problems with footwear in Venice, btw, it's just crowded, but those cobblestones in Florence really killed my feet. Rome is hard walking in the ruins, but the city streets are well paved.
I usually bring a pair of J Crew ballet flats for more dressy events (not for extended walking) when I travel. They packed into next to nothing (comparing to heels).
OT, but I got my Turkey Code order today and my dream long cardigan in blue was an XS, even though I ordered a S and the bag was marked S. Now they are out, I am very sad...

BUT then I realized that on the original order, I'd used a $100 gift card & charged the rest to credit -- they only charged $55 to the gift card & the rest to credit (b/c of the cancelled item). WHY the hell would I want to keep a $45 balance on my gift card, & charge the rest to my credit card?????? Logically, don't you apply the gift card and THEN the difference on credit??
I'm SO frustrated. I know these things can be fixed, but I shouldn't have to watch my orders like a hawk & catch these errors. And because of such a delay in them actually pulling the items for me & charging my account, the Canadian exchange rate has worsened & now I'm going to pay more for the items than I would have had they shipped them in a timely manner. It's just not worth it to shop with you, jcrew. Sorry.
OK - Just opened my Duchamp Print Astor jacket.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I love the material. Could be worn as either a light coat or jacket, so it is flexible.
The pattern is somewhat overwhelming. The bell sleeves along with the less fitted shape of the jacket are a lot(I am 5'6"). I can see it being flattering on a taller woman. I do not think one need be slim to pull off the jacket, just taller. Because of the sleeves and the looser fit there is a lot of material right around the waist. Open, it looks quite cute, but once it is buttoned, the fit fails on me. I might keep it, but will need to try on again. I tried it one with a brown shirt underneath, dark jeans and high heels. Because of the bold print, simplicity is key. I also prefer to wear my jackets with one button fastened, so this jacket will be a struggle for me.
Himmiefan, I currently live in Italy and for the most part, sandals will be fine if that is what is most comfortable for you. If you are visiting the Vatican, you will need to have non-sandal shoes (I think, I visited in the winter so it wasn't a problem for me). I also recommend buying shoes in Italy - Florence or Venice especially - the leather is unbelievable - so soft and comfy, very different than J.Crew shoes (even the ones made in Italy are not even close to the leather you find over here).

ReplyDeleteI really like the look of the shoe. I wore them for a wine and cheese where I was standing for 2.5hours. No blisters but my feet were sore I guess because of the 31/2 inch heel. The price has come down a lot on these shoes.

ReplyDeleteDuchamp Astor update. All - I have just solved the fit problem on me. I am going to have 3 inches of the sleeves lopped off and change it into a 3/4 sleeve jacket. This eliminated the excess fabric at the waist and keeps the bell sleeve in check. Also, the arm looks slender coming out of the bell sleeve which gives some needed definition. This will be a very cheap fix with the tailor, as there are no buttons or cuff on this jacket. Now I am quite happy. Yeah! Those who are easily cold might not like this fix though. I am a huge fan of 3/4 length sleeves, as my arms are slightly short for my body anyway.

I got a 4, which is what I've been wearing in the J.Crew jackets lately, so I should be ok...I almost opted for the 2, but have the same issue with broad shoulders as you do, so I stayed with the 4. ReplyDeleteI finally gave in and ordered the Lucinda coat in navy in 0P. It fits verrrry tight on top in the chest area, then loosens up below. It's also very fitted in the shoulders. I wore a thin top underneath and had virtually no more room in the chest and shoulders. For reference, I'm about 5'2" with at least a 34B bust. The sleeves, on the other hand, are wide open at the bottom - the wind can blow right up your arms. I'm definitely wearing mid-cuff gloves with this coat.
All in all, the stadium cloth material (at least in the Lucinda) is pretty sturdy and hefty. More than I expected, anyway, having tried on many coats in the store lately. It's still not as plush or warm as last year's Dani wool/cashmere coat (probably my warmest yet), but I think it will keep me sufficiently warm through the winter. It's a lot more fitted on top than last year's Dani wool/cashmere coat too.
I'm going to keep it. Having now received this, I feel a lot better about taking a chance on the Bridget.
Hi, I'm Erica!: I recently received crewcuts leggings instead of my sparkle plaid tweed pencil skirt! CS did a couple We Will Find Its to try to replace my skirt, but it just took patience before I could order it again online. That same week I received a silk taffeta special occasion dress instead of my double-serge pencil. The crewcuts leggings took the cake for me, as they were labeled "parkle plaid tweed p" on the plastic. I thought ordering just 1 item at a time would help me avoid cancellations, but toddler pants?! Ridiculous.

ReplyDeleteIt is not a complaint. You have a right to receive your order and J.Crew has an obligation to deliver the contract in return for receiving the money. Companies who can not cope with customer claims will lose the market share and eventually die in the future. Management of Toyota always says that customer claims contains full of business opportunities for them. "Kaizen" means improvement of thousands of claims and complaints. Only companies who make tremendous efforts to improve minor and major issues can reinforce its competitiveness. Excellent management can do it. J.Crew management and employees should take what is happening right now seriously, listen to customers patiently, and analyze current problems; Why your customers complain? Why inventories management is out of order? Why IT system haven not fixed yet even six months after upgrade? Why items aren’t delivered properly? Why customers always return items? There are always reasons behind each problem. The current issues are no longer problems which individual customer representatives can cope with. It is a management level issue. It is huge negligence of J.Crew management to leave issues like this. J.Crew management should take any measures immediately rather than hoping that customers will endure those issues. Otherwise, it would jeopardize the company position as well as your own position in the future.
I second (or third or fourth or whatever we're at) Cole Haan Nike Air shoes for walking around. I have a pair of mocs and they're amazingly comfortable.
ReplyDeleteBut if you're wearing something not so comfortable, or breaking shoes in, I recommend Band-Aid Blister Block. It's usually next to the Band-Aids in the first aid aisle of Walgreens and looks like a little blue deodorant stick. You just apply it wherever you might get a blister, and it helps the shoe slide over your skin instead of rub your skin dry. Amazingly effective, super cheap, and small enough to carry around in your purse.
This is OT, but can I get some help choosing a color for the calfskin Jamie bag? I don't live near a store that carries this bag. Which would be the best color? I can't decide between:

I love the heather majestic purple color-- have a sweater from a couple years ago in this shade-- but I didn't want another long coat (i.e., Lady Day), so I got the Marie during the TURKEY sales. Steph: Does UPS show the package as delivered to J.Crew? My return took almost 2 weeks to be credited after it was received by the returns warehouse...I wouldn't worry until next week, and then if you don't get your credit by Monday or Tuesday you should call them.

Apologies, yes, but extra stuff like free shipping or gift cards, never. I guess it would be nice to get some small token of J.Crew's esteem, but what I'd really like is my old reliable J.Crew back!

We just have to stop ordering on-line, or least drastically cut back. Tall order, I know with so many people without a store nearby. I really don't see any other alternative at this point.

I did have those problems over the summer, but recently (~3-5 orders placed in November) I've received everything correctly and faster than anticipated. Some weeding to go through (I've taken some shirts home to find huge holes that I somehow missed), but if you're ever in town, the Berkeley one has a lot of JCrew stuff. Last week I bought the champagne Rose Tee for $20 (their regular price). Some items are clearly samples (written SAMPLE in permanent marker inside), but you can luck out, like the Lulu heels and flats in my size, the color I wanted, long after the website sold out, for $59! Makes me wish I had friends on twitter to alert me what's in store!

anon @ 6:03 - I've seen the pink, honey glaze, and terra cotta Jaime bags. They are all very pretty and the leather is smooth and shiny, but not shiny in a cheap-looking way. it's supple and well-made leather (at least it looks to be).
ReplyDeleteOne thing I noticed right away is that the bag was smaller than I thought it would be. Remember last year's Maddie (I think that was the name of the bigger one)? I think the Jamie is smaller. It's okay for me day-to-day, but not really when I need to fit in work stuff/snacks/magazines. I mean, it fits a lot, don't get me wrong. But it just barely fits a lot of stuff I would carry around if I were carrying "mommy" stuff. I think the uptown tote is a little more forgiving for stuff like that. The Jamie has 2 inside pockets, which is fine but not Coach competition. I usually end up with a Coach from the outlet.
I personally think the terra cotta Jamie goes with the most number of things. It works with a black/gray/navy wardrobe base and it works with a beige/ivory base. It also works very well with a lot of colorful wardrobes (like mine). If you can only buy one, the terra cotta will give you a lot of mileage. Personally, I've been thinking about getting the rose color. It's a beautiful shade and it's kind of classic, so even when hot pink and fuchsia aren't so in style, it will still be beautiful.

ReplyDeleteOn the Jamie bag: have seen in the store, the calfskin shows scratches VERY easily (store ones all scratched up) so I would get the black if you really want this bag. Otherwise I would get a regular leather bag that is easier to maintain. And yes the bag is not very large as others mentioned.
ReplyDeleteOn the smartlabel through USPS: This is the cheapest way to return stuff, can take up to 3-4 weeks. I learned my lesson on using these and will pass up the free return shipping from a smartlabel and pay for UPS or fedex ground myself to return items to online merchants. It's a matter of 3-4 days versus 3-4 weeks, and you get a real tracking number from UPS or Fedex. Post office won't give you one on pre-paid stuff.
I was wondering if anyone could help me on coat sizing ... What do you think of the petite vs regular sizing? Is the 2P smaller than the 0 or do you need to order a 0P if the 0 is too large. Thanks in advance!

I am drawn to the pink, yellow and burnt sienna but am afraid it will dated after this season. I think the black looks the most classic and the richest. I am also concerned about the brass rings on each side to hold the longer strap. If you decide to not use it, it may look funny with those two rings just sitting there. Just my two cents. Good luck!

ReplyDeleteWell, today I received the first of my TURKEY orders. Ordered 6 items. 1 was waitlisted and two items missing (navy tissue tee t-neck and patent serengeti clutch). Did I forget to mention that the packing slip was missing and I need to return one of the items I actually received? Called CS and they offered to reorder the items with 30% off and free shipping but the clutch was sold out and I can't be bothered with trying to reorder the t-neck. Still waiting for the plum peacoat that was "shipped" on 11/24. UPS site still says "Billing Information Received". Tomorrow is the 7th of standard shipping day. So I call back tomorrow to start a trace. I'm telling you that black hole is full of missing items! On the flip-side, I used my 25% off coupon at the Rockefeller Center store and got both the Double Serge Pencil Skirt in Deep Persimmon & Donegal Tweed Ecole Jacket in Pumpkin for a total of $94.48. And they gave me back the coupon! Maybe I should stick to shopping at the B&M. Now if I could just get them stock petites...
ReplyDeleteOT but I finally received the tartine cardigan in buttercup today. i think i'm going to return it :( the merino is see-through and the chiffon ruffles lie oddly. the color reminds me of grandma's mustard sweater, not the trendy honey glazish mustard I was hoping it would be. overall, the quality feels like Forever 21 rayon/tencel/polyester mix, NOT merino!

On the jamie bag - I wasn't going to order it until I saw one in black at the store. The leather is so nice and supple that I just fall in love. I like the size, as it's not overwhelming, and the shape is very classical and handles are long enough that I can carry it on my shoulders. I have an uptown tote which is great for weekend when I can pile a bunch of stuff in, but the Jamie is a very classic weekday bag suitable for work.

ReplyDeleteI got my 'turkey' order today - thankfully no problems. I ordered the sequin chiffon trim shell, the twisted crystal necklace, and shearling moc slippers and will be keeping everything. The sequin shell is gorgeous and fits really nicely - I'm a pretty true small in J.Crew tops and have a small bust and the shell lays really nicely on my shoulders and has some room around the waist so it's not fitted all the way down. I love love love the crystal necklace - I think I'll be wearing it as two shorter strands rather than one long one just because I don't like really long necklaces, but it's definitely a piece that can be used to dress up a casual outfit and that will go nicely dressy ones. I ordered the slippers in an 8 because as of late I've been wearing an 8 in J.Crew shoes, but they're snug and I could have easily gotten a 9. However, I don't plan to do much walking in them, so I'm going to keep the 8 and save myself the hassle of an exchange.

ReplyDeleteI was thinking about ATG's A/B testing capability when I mentioned AB testing. I got the pitch from ATG a few years ago and I saw that J Crew was their client.
Anyway, the website is down, and they can't even take orders off the phone or look up orders. I hope they backed up that order database. They should have replicated the database so at least the agents can check the existing orders or inventory level and maybe go to the manual paper ordering route.
Guess the problem is J Crew doesn't appear to be a very technology savvy company. They need to invest some money and get some help.

OT: Does anyone have a sweater in the honey glaze? I ordered a sweater in this color, as there was a narrow selection, and I am not quite sure what to expect.. looks different in different photos. Is it mustardy or more of a warm honey color? And, what colors do you wear it with? Thx!

ReplyDeleteThe regular size 0 is usually equivalent to P2. If size 0 is too large for you, you might want to order P0. When it comes to outerwear, it depends on the size of your shoulder. The best way is to call CS and ask their advice.
Usually I order regular size 0 and order size P2 when size 0 is not available. I feel P2 is slightly smaller than the regular size 0 but not much difference. HTH!
Not to be a total idiot... but how can you tell the inventory level of an item that's online? I always read comments from people about how many of a particular item are left, and I have no idea how you can tell!

I don't bother ordering online anymore. Between the ridiculous shipping and order issues...its just not worth it. But I guess I'm fortunate enough to live near a couple J.Crews. It's weird though, online its not final sale, but in store it is. Oh well, J.Crew loves its inconsistency...they can do it because we put up with it and keep buying. It's weird...I do love their clothes...but I am not a fan of the company. I think they take advantage of their customers.
ReplyDeleteOT: I just received the Houndstooth Greta coat. The first word that came to mind when i tried it on was "retro." It is totally mod and could almost come out of the 60s were it not for the updated collar and its slender lines.
ReplyDeleteThe color is just as it appears online -- bright, vibrant sweet potato and off white. The fabric is very soft; the details, including the buttons and back pleat, cute. It's a lightweight coat really, hitting just on the hips (well, at least mine). I expected it to be longer, would have preferred it longer and with a bit more swing.
I found it true to size, unless wearing a thicker sweater underneath, or if you have broader shoulders. I tried it on with a thick cardigan and found it a bit constraining. I will opt for the larger size which will give me more versatility, in addition to length. I wish J.Crew made in between sizes :) or would widen the shoulders in their jackets.
Anyway, the verdict is still out on this one. As cute as the coat is, it is very trendy (and bright!), and i rarely buy coats that i can't keep for years. Also, i've been eyeing the golden roses Renee, and may decide in favor of this one because of the more subdued colors and length even if it isn't as warm.
My turkey order arrived today and I was shorted an item. I ordered university pants in multiple sizes and colors so that I could get the right fit, and they left one pair out.
ReplyDeleteI had a Victoria Cami left out of my last ordered. I'm kinda glad to here that other orders were goofed as well. At least I know that I am not the only one calling.
To be fair, I ordered multiple pairs of the same boots from BR a couple of weeks ago to try for size and they sent me too many pairs!
dear ffm is the gold jamie the same material as the metallic flight bag--Borge gaveri? Also Can those with the same d- cup chest give feedback on jcrew's bikini pieces. Will the string bikinis still cover the gals?
ReplyDeleteI'm a D cup and find the bikini tops a little dangerous. I mean they are fine for lounge by the pool, you know, if you sit real still...but I always feel a little offensive in them. I found the halter style to weirdly push the gals apart...and make me just look weird. I kept the string version and wear it rarely. They do have D cup size bikini tops though, I think I will try that next time.

I'm also considering the metallic but I'm concerned that I may look a little too bling-bling. My work environment is pretty staid (medicine), and a gold bag may raise a few eyebrows. I do love it that the metallic may wear better when it comes to scratches. Tough choice.

ReplyDeleteI guess you could say our turkey orders turned out to be a turkey. I think I'm done ordering online for the year. I've been a loyal J. Crew customer for a decade and have never experienced anything like the problems this year. Shopping should not be so unbelievably frustrating.
To the anon - sometimes you just have to go with the color you like. The bag is for you, not your coworkers. Who cares what they think?

Life's too short to play it safe. Get a color that makes you happy.

Thanks so much for this review. I was very close to purchasing this due to the sale. A cocoon shape would not be a good look for me. I learned earlier in the fall that "Majestic Purple" is very blue and not more "plum" shade of purple. If you are looking for purple try "plum" or even "peony".

ReplyDeleteOh, going back to the original post on the Marie Coat. I liked the narrow double breasted style but when I noticed the raglan sleeves (which may make my shoulder wider), I knew I had to pass.
I instead ordered the Stadium Cloth Bridget Coat in navy and the Stadium Cloth Shipley Coat. Is there anywhere I can review those coats?
BTW, if anyone tried/ got the metallic houndstooth pheobe jacket (see link), let me know what you think!

I have to say I am very happy with the coat. It fits well overall and is well tailored everywhere through the shoulder, chest to waist area. It also is empire waist cut which definitely elongates my legs and slims me down! I was wearing the velvet ecole jacket underneath today and the chest area got a little tight. I have a small chest so girls heavy on the top may want to order one size up or just wear a tee or something thin enough underneath. (note: if this may help on the sizing - i wear a size 0 velvet ecole jacket which is tight in the shoulder and body even with a chiffon shirt but fits very well in this coat). In terms of the length, I am 5"7 and it hits an inch longer than as shown on the model.
The fabric is medium weight and soft and a creamy color! For some reasons, I feel that the stadium cloth used in this coat is a little thinner and less bulky than the one used in the bridget coat, which I love!
At first I thought the style looks a little boring comparing to say the Lillie or Greta but it is so elegant and versatile! I can dress up and also down with it! It looks good with jeans and skirts.
It is overall a good investment. I mentioned I also purchased the bridget coat. I have already returned it! It makes me look short and bulky! I do not have the problems of having too much fabric from my waist down like some aficionadas brought up before though the waist area is quite generous. I believe the very big and wide collar and the double breasted style contribute to the widening effect. Again, the stadium cloth is quite heavy weight too. I feel heavy when I wear it. I do not feel heavy at all wearing the Shipley. The navy color is also very very very dark, close to black. For some reasons, I feel like an old lady wearing it!!! :(
Now I really want the metallic houndstooth jacket... any comments on the style? I am afraid it may age me with the style and fabric. All thoughts welcome!
Now I am awaiting my crawford blouse, the printed version and watercolor red crawford cami. Ordered before 11 am this morning and am told it would be shipped within today but my order is still "open". Let's hope they will arrive safe and sound! Will make sure to report back!!!
Oh, whether the Shipley coat is warm? I had a chiffon shirt and velvet ecole jacket on - it is mid 40sF today. Warm enough when it is NOT windy! I do not like how wool/ cashmere feel against my skin so I do not wear winter sweaters at all. But if you do, yes, the Shipley coat is warm enough. Hope this helps.

ReplyDeletei received the metallic houndstooth phoebe jacket today and i must say I LOVE IT, one of my best buys this season. for its price right now, it's definitely a keeper.
compared to the astrids i think the fit is better..its not boxy at all but very well-structured. it's thinner than i imagined so i think i can wear it till spring if i fold the sleeves..the length, however, is a bit shorter than the astrids i believe. it hits very high hip, but i wore it with a grey cami that was slightly longer and dark skinny jeans and black flats for dinner and i received so many compliments.
the houndstooth pattern is really interesting...the tweed bit and the metallic bit are woven together...i'm so tempted right now to order the marie but i just ordered another madeline and harriet this morning...so if it turns out that i return one of those, i'm definitely getting the marie.
i wish i had read your review on the shipley and i would have ordered that as well. i love anything with an empire waist because i'm 5'3 and it makes me look taller...i wonder if they'd do free shipping on it, since i ordered this morning.

Hi. I am a sad girl today; I ordered the lady day coat last week in a size 2 but it's too small for me. When I called for a size 4 they said they were out of stock in the chocolate color. So what are the chances that j crew will stock more coats this year or that somebody will return one? You ladies seem like you would know the answer.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to add my two cents on the Marie Coat - ordered the ivory sz 0 and just received it - it is going right back. Hideous on, it looked like I was wearing a shapeless lab coat. And not specific to the coat itself, I find the double-cloth coats should be called jackets, because they're not nearly heavy enough to be in the winter coat category for anyone who lives in a colder part of the world. Hopefully the Carrie will be a better choice!
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the comment about the double-cloth coats being more like jackets. I have a Double-Cloth Lady Coat from 2006 and I wear it on cold Washington DC winter days/night. And the textured exterior material is very good-looking and durable. It's a solid coat and one of my favorites.

ReplyDeleteI ordered the Marie coat in heather majestic purple (gorgeous color). I'm 5'9 and half, usually take a 10 coats and I like mine in tall for the sleeve and body length; my body shape is athletic (broader shoulders) and straight (high and long wiast.) Because of the sleeve (raglan) and the shape of the coat (mine is more straight than coccoon), I took a big step and ordered a size down in T8. I think this was a good choice for me because it gave me more of a shape, although I think the coat would improve with a back vent (but then I guess this would ruin the "retro" look they were trying to achieve). Overall, the material is very thin compared to my Lady Day coat and another double cloth coat that I have from 2 years ago called the Camille: I can't wear this in our current 30-degree weather at all, even though I can with the Lady Day and Camille.
I'm keeping it because the color is gorgeous and my T8 worked for me in sizing.
