J.Crew's Cardigan Worn Four Ways {pretty!}

"Thanks!" to Casual-Crew (in this post) who let us know that on the women's main page (click here), J.Crew is showcasing how a cardigan (click here) can be worn in multiple ways. What is really interesting is that the models are all J.Crew employees.

From the top, clock wise:
  1. "This isn't your granpa's cardigan."
    - Sarah, Stylist
  2. "With bright shoes and pearls- It's my go-to piece"
    -Vannell, Photo Studio Coordinator
  3. "My uniform: slouchy chinos and a long merino cardigan."
    -Molly, Designer, Women's Dresses
  4. "I always like to add a little shimmer."
-Lisa, Director of Design, Women's Jewelry
I love that J.Crew asked some of their stylish staff members to wear similar pieces, but in their own unique ways- how creative!

SIDENOTE: For those wondering about that {beautiful} yellow and white dress that Sarah is wearing... that dress is made by J.Crew. In an older post (click here), there were some "sneak peeks" of both J.Crew and Madewell's clothes. One of the images (click here), shows that dress in three colors. The dress is the Solid silk chiffon Whitney long dress (Item 11429; $325.00).

What is your favorite look of the four? Do you own (or have tried on) J.Crew's long cardigan? If so, what are your thoughts? Would you recommend to buy? :)

  1. I like the ad...very cute and clever! While the sweater looks cute I have several of these long cardigans from the late 80's/early 90's in a tote in my basement...(waiting for my daughter someday). I don't care to relive this trend...I like shorter cardigans...more classic like the Jackie.

  2. Anon at 8:50AM: I totally agree with you that the ad is cute and clever! :) I hope they decide to do more of these kinds of ads- I really like them! :)

  3. What a refreshing change to see actual everyday women (not models) in J.Crew clothing. Several of us discussed this concept a few months ago, only our idea was that J.Crew use actual customers (not employees) in the catalogs...maybe that will be next?

  4. FFM: I love the idea of using actual customers to model the clothes. There are so many stylish members of this blog alone- J.Crew wouldn't have to look far to find some great customer/models! :)

  5. How clever! I will admit that I've been own to drop hundreds of dollars to replicate outfits seen in J. Crew catalogs and online; I think seeing a piece styled really helps to sell the product! I'd much rather see an item of clothing styled into an outfit than on a mannequin (are you listening, Anthropologie.com?)

And seeing it styled four ways is even better. I also hope they do more of this...

Or maybe not. My wallet is beginning to hate me. :P

  6. I think they're stealing our ideas! :)

O/T: Google JCrew & there is a different coupon code for fs. It is "JAN2020".

  7. ITA w/ anon 8:50am, I just have one merino JC glass button cardi & it is not as versatile for me at the shorter ones; so, this helps me figure out how to wear it. The longer cardis can make hips look bigger, IMO. I will prob. wear it belted over a pencil skirt, or open over jeans and tank. Love that they used non-models, altho these peeps look pretty thin.

  8. I can't get to this add unless I use your link. Maybe I need to clear my cookies?

  9. I like that JC used employees to model their clothes as well, but I'm a cardigan-lover and none of their ideas were really ground-breaking, plus I'm just not a fan of the long cardigans.

  10. I really like the long cardis, especially with a belt over capri or rolled jeans/pants. I love the contrast of the long over short. I own several and they are very slimming.

  11. Sheesh - chinos & a cardigan? Hello, snoozeville. That's about the most boring combination possible.

  12. The ad should read, "One cardigan worn with four different outfits." It is worn the same way, open and undone, with the sleeves pushed up, with each outfit.

The long cardis look great on those of us who are tall and not curvy. They are terrible on women with wider hips or bigger bums as they usually fall right at the widest point.

I have several of these already and I really like the shorter Jackies better. Especially with the pencil skirts.

  13. Sarah the stylist--her neck is going to need adjusting after wearing that necklace

Vannell--are you wearing putty color? That's very pretty and one of my favorite looks with crisp white shirt.

Molly-lose the men's Chinos-you look absurd. Do you have legs or just a torso?

Lisa--the jewelry designer-cute outfit but what is that giant, peachy, satiny thing sticking out of the side of your neck/collar? I cannot figure that one out?? Is it a giant ribbon tying those pearls on?
Oh if they could all be a glamorous as me...sitting in my pjs-LOL!

  14. I love the long cardigans! At 5'10", I just don't like the cropped jackets/sweaters/tops. I love that I don't have to constantly readjust my top half by pulling and tugging just to keep the sweater in the right place. I envy all of you who can wear the shorter tops, it seems like it's been the "in" style forever and I just can't pull it off.

  15. I am 5'10" and I wrote the first comment at 8:50. I prefer the shorter cardigans...I just have long arms and legs...NOT a long torso. I never buy Talls in clothing from JCrew or anywhere...they don't work for me...

  16. Hi Anon at 8:50 and 11:47! This is Anon at 11:36, I've never tried the Jackie cardigan. Do you know how it fits compared to the merino glass button cardigan? It seems like a lot of people like the Jackie cardigans and I was just wondering if I should give it a try. Thanks!

  17. I'm also 5'10" with long limbs and I love the Jackie cardigans, especially with the higher-waisted pencil skirts. The long cardigans don't look nearly so neat and classic.

Anon @ 11:55 - the Jackie cardigans fit very well as they also have some lycra and nylong, which makes them a little stretchy and a lot comfortable. They can be worn with the shell or each piece worn separately. One of my favorite looks this season is a brightly colored shell over a dress shirt. Livens things up a bit under my suit and also adds a little bit of warmth.

  18. Thanks for the advice on the long cardigan, I have ordered and cancelled the Boyfriend cardigan twice now, because I was afraid of wearing a long sweater. I am only 5.4 with short legs, so the longer cardigan will make my legs appear shorter.

  19. hi, first timer at the blog!

I'm wondering if anyone knows if the ringspun scoopneck painter tee is still available in navy or slate in the stores? In size medium. I'm based in chicago and obsessed with the texture of these shirts!

annoyingly, only the lighter colors are left online.

    thanks!

  21. I'm wearing one of the these cardis right now :) The Portland, love it. I'm short and curvy but I think the look works. The Portland hits at the widest point of my hip so it softens the waist to hip ratio. I button it once under the bust to give a little definition

  22. LOVE the long cardis! I feel I'm also tugging and re-adjusting the shorter cardis I have and am never 100% comfortable and confident in them! Love that they used "real" people, too, and not "models". Would love to see more of that, J.Crew!

  23. Thanks Anon at 12:48! Maybe I should give the Jackie a try. I'm still not giving up my long cardigans. :) I just love them too much.
Elizabeth in MO: That's exactly the same way I feel about the shorter cardis. I wish they would make more long cardigans, not even really long, just a couple of inches added to the bottom would be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love the yellow dress on Sarah, the girl in the upper left hand corner. Is that a J. Crew dress? I don't see it in their new collection...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Elizabeth in MO... if you are tugging and adjusting the cardis all the time, you are not wearing the correct size.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Shannon - I agree. I am short and curvy and love the long cardigans. I am wearing the michelle merino cardigan right now and have three of the glass buttons. I like the Jackie's OK but I have to wear them with something high waisted or else I am tugging at it when I sit.

  27. Re. Jackie versus long cardigans a la glass button: I'm only 5'9" and though I try the Jackie in the store each season, I simply cannot bring myselt to buy it. Unless I wear it with a long tank it's feels like a shrunken cardigan to me. The sleeves are fine, though. I'm somewhere between regular and tall in JCrew clothing. I tried their bathing suits once and when I tied the halter string I thought the ladies were going to take a peek at the world. I suppose I could have purchased it and referred to it as the peek-a-boo suit for the DH. Anyway, Happy New Year.

  28. I received the Portland cardi yesterday in Navy and ordered another in the Desert Brown color. I really like the style, fabric and fit. It's a versatile piece. I'm taller but it works well for me, plus it doesn't have pockets at the hip area, which I find on long cardigans can add bulkiness.

  29. Bug Pin, you're too funny. :) I saw that necklace in the jewelry section of the website and thought I have to have it...until I saw it on their model, Lisa. Way too much ribbon IMHO.

  30. I haven't bought any of the longer cardigans because I don't know what kind of outerwear works over them. Does it have to be something long? I only wear long coats in the winter. Would it look wierd having a long sweater hanging out the bottom of any kind of a short jacket? Nevermind, I think i just answered my own dumb question!

  31. The Michelle and Portland cardigans are my favorite! I only have one gripe- the Michelle cardigan developed holes within one wear. This happened in two separate sweaters. I was able to take them back to the store and exchanged them. No problems- yet- with the new ones. I wear the cardigan in this post (cream colored) with the lame Zoey tank in cream underneath.

Minkoff fanatic? Not sure what this means.

  34. Jbird-so sorry! I should have been clearer in case you were not and like now, had no idea what I meant by that comment! There is someone that shares a similar "handle" that loves Rebecca Minkoff handbags. Thought you might have been her-no harm:)

  36. Megan or Anyone Else

I also love the yellow dress on sara, I really want it for my sister's wedding next summer, her wedding color is yellow and the rest of the girls will be wearing j crew bridesmaids dresses. I originally saw this dress in the collection but its only in shades of grey and black, I'm curious if anyone has been able to track it down in the yellow featured on sara!!?! because by looking at the pics I can tell its the same dress and I think it would be the perfect maid of honor dress!! I would really appreciate the help.

  37. How refreshing!! Those were my sentiments when I first saw J.Crew's decision to use "real" people. I agree they should also use customers!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I also would like to know who makes the yellow and white dress on "sara"!!! Anybody???

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anon at 8:27 PM and all those looking for that gorgeous yellow and white dress:

Fortunately, I found it! That dress is made by Madewell (J.Crew's sister store, www.Madewell1937.com). In an older post (click here), there were some "sneak peaks" of both J.Crew and Madewell's clothes. One of the images (click here), shows the dress you are looking for in three colors. (Or at least they look very similar). I just checked Madewell's online site and couldn't find the dress, but I am sure it will be for sale, as part of their Spring collection, soon.
