Sought & Found: Did you visit J.Creaw this {past} Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopped by a J.Crew store this past weekend to see what's available (if anything!) in the SALE, or to see some NEW ARRIVALS {sigh!} in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store was/ is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

  1. The Sale section now has "Clearance Final Sale", "Weekly Sale Picks", and "Recently Reduced" sections. Individual items are identified as "Clearance Final Sale" or "Savings Already Applied" or some other blather.

The new guy's promo strategies have a "game show" quality to them and are sinking. J Crews brand image, what little remains. Not the direction I was hoping for. I never thought I would call my go-to store for decades "tacky," but there you have it.

    1. In other news, the founder of J Crew, Arthur Cinader, passed away at age 90 yesterday. He is credited with helping to popularize the preppy look, and creating the J Crew catalog's iconic look and sophisticated copy in the early days.

It's interesting to see the company's history.

    2. More short-sightedness. Just leave the sale section the way it was and work on design and quality - then you'd have less in the sale section to get rid of! I cannot believe there's another cold-shoulder top in the early access stuff considering how many of them are on sale (I mean, I can, but...).

    3. I can confirm,no more extra off sale (except teacher/student discount).

    4. Thanks, Ina - I think they've tried to do this in the past (no extra % off sale) and it hasn't worked. I wonder if they'll stick to it in the long term.

    5. I’m not liking the new pricing strategy either as it’s coming off as tacky as ruffles mentioned. It feels weird to see the % reduction mentioned beside the price and the big clearance banner just comes across as a cheaper brand imo. Not offering extra % off sale will be a turnoff in store I believe. I guess the test will come with the new rollouts. If they improve the merch then there won’t be so much in sale.

    6. no extra % off sale. well just let it all sit there unsold. J Crew you are driving customers away. you will see !

  2. I stopped in on Sat. to make a return. The sale section was fairly picked over. I would have purchased a sweater if they had an extra % off, but left empty handed. Not excited by the preview of new items that will come out this week, so no reason to visit.

  4. HI all, Not sure if this was mentioned I haven't read this much lately...but went to J. Crew this weekend and it was 30 off the store but not sale...weird because it had been inc before. I asked a Sales woman and she said they got an email last week saying from now on sale will not be an extra percent off and they will just mark it down lower to begin with...ridiculous and not true since the prices were still what they would have been before an extra percent off before...I saw Jackie sweaters for $49.99 yesterday on sale....Great well it was always that price so they didn't mark it lower even though they claim they are marking things lower down. I saw this with most sale items. A few were marked down low but most were not. They will let you use student/teacher discount on the sale. I don't like this new sale strategy and it will certainly make me shop less at J. Crew.

    1. Gosh. Thanks for the info. I'm not sure I like the direction things are headed. If that is going to be the pricing strategy, they need to follow through with it and mark things down lower. We are savvy shoppers and know when prices change. I had a zero balance on my Jcrew card last month which hardly ever happens. My shopping there has decreased for several reasons: home items needed more of my budget, back to school & tuition spending, a closet organization revealed many new items that I could be wearing instead of buying more and finding less at Jcrew that interests me. I waited till yesterday, the date it expired, to use a $25 gift from Jcrew. I'll be honest, it was a struggle finding something I wanted to spend it on that I thought was a good price and in stock in my size.

    2. Thanks for the confirmation of the new sale strategy. I think it was brought up before but this is a very similar move to the JC Penney strategy that crashed and burned so I will be curious to see what happens especially with the holidays coming up. Shopping Celle I have also ended the month with a zero balance on my card. Also I only earned a $25 rewards card for the last quarter which is a record low for me. I really think I will not earn one at all for the next quarter as there is seriously nothing I am interested in and the new sale pricing strategy has turned me off.

    3. I looked through the sale section yesterday and it seemed that some items had been significantly reduced (Collection strapless striped raffia dress item G5351), while others hadn't been touched lately (One-shoulder bow top item G7721). I much prefer a blanket % off of sales -- I'm not going to go back day after day to see whether the particular items I'm interested in have been further reduced or not.

    4. There have been no new items added to sale for a week or more..I agree no need to look anymore.

    5. Yeah I don't see how a 49.99 jackie sweater with original price of $65 is justified being marked as clearance/final sale. That should be reserved for a minimum of 50% off original price. And yes, this strategy did not work for JCP. There is a psychological thrill of getting the extra % off that makes people buy, and it also creates a sense of urgency to buy before promo ends. Successful selling and marketing incorporate exhibited psychological phenomena.

    6. I'm glad I stocked up on the sale + extra off Jackies. They're not worth $49.99 but I'm plenty happy with that cardigan for $30 or less. ;)

  5. We may have to start a new blog..."my life without J Crew".

  6. Clearly the "new guy" has no clue re: J Crew. We want the style guides/catalogs the way they were before, not crappy little booklets with no item descriptions. Quality over quantity, classic styles in fun colors & prints, and pricing to match the quality offered. Was so fed up when I visited a store last week and I knew more about the product than any of the sales associates. It was frustrating and made me very sad.

    1. Not impressed with all the primary crayola colors I am seeing in this season's outerwear. Makes me feel like I walked into a kindergarten art lesson.

    2. I'd like to see some different outerwear styles, not the same coats again each year!

    3. 100% agree. Who wants to buy the same coat everyone already has? Or if you didn't like it last year, you're not going to like it now.

    4. Cass-I agree! What happened to those beautiful complimentary colors J.Crew produces? Now the colors are a bit odd.

      Here’s their color video:

    5. Yeah, if you're not interested in a cocoon or a chateau coat there aren't a ton of options. They used to have a lot of options in the past - single and double-breasted, lots of different colors and patterns. Just Google image search "jcrew coat womens"!

  7. Ugh, depressing. Just give me something with sleeves to my wrist, with shoulders, with an actual waistband and without ruffles at a fair price, quality fabric and construction and I will buy. Really, I will.

    1. I totally agree! Why is everything some form of cold shoulder, ruffled or bell-sleeved, puffy shirt, or bad prints? The only print grabbing my attention is the lipstick print, and I'm not a fan of the ruffle neck top, or ruffled dress that they use it in. If they'd made a gorgeous silk button down like years ago, in that print, I'd have bought it in a heartbeat. And don't get me started on the quality of new "everyday cashmere" or most of the sweaters. I haven't found anything to spend my rewards on yet, and I'm running out of time. It's sad when I'm more excited to look at the new colors of secret wash shirts for my husband than anything for myself…

  9. JC's third financial quarter ends in October. So, in November, we will see how the new strategy is working. I really have enough items, so I am hoping that in the next release I can find some timeless classics in vibrant colors to add to my wardrobe. Since they haven't identified whose taking over Women, I'm hoping to snag any last items influenced by Jenna with the next release. I figure her touch won't extend beyond this and overall I am not enthused with the direction of JC. Sadly, I'm losing hope. Guess, I better learn to sew.

  10. The only thing I like about the new way sale is organized online is that I can select to view by percentage off. It's still crazy that there are items from the spring that are more expensive now than they were months ago, I think I will probably buy a lot less.
And is it any surprise among those 70% off includes the cold shoulder bell sleeve top from late summer? Too many trends in one sad piece. Now available for $19.99

    1. Totally. And yet another cold/off shoulder is on the early access for tomorrow’s roll-out! SMH

  11. I am really disappointed with this new sales strategy. The sale section reminds me of the sale section of Shopbop, which drives me crazy to sort through. Usually I give up halfway. Also it makes me not want to check daily, because how annoying would it be to see the same things over again every time they move them around the different % off. I decided to do the adult thing and took the portion of my monthly budget for JC shopping and added it to my monthly mortgage payments instead. I’m going to continue to pay more mortgage until JC brings back the additional discounts off sale. (Let’s see how long I last!)

  12. I didn't visit, but did find a few things to buy from the early access email. With the 20% off and an additional 20% off stackable promo, the prices were good enough to try a few items. My only frustration is that only 2 are in stock and the rest of them are "backordered" until late in October.

    1. Was there 20% off offered through the early access email? I'm a cardholder and never get the early access emails!

    2. Stores that received inventory allowed 30% off purchase and you could stack the 20% off coupon. I picked up Tres Chic tee and Striped Turtleneck (more of a mock neck) sweater dress in black/camel. I really like this color combo and it has lots of versatility. My only concern is the acrylic blend (ugh). I did ask the SA, who's really experienced, her opinion. She thought this version would wear better than previous iterations. We shall see. I'm planning to pair with a Vince black cashmere coat cardigan and/or J Crew open cashmere cardigan in heather camel and over the knee suede boots. Fit is tts.

    3. @Cass - yes, I did receive a 20% off code with the early access email.

      Delete
    4. Wow I missed out if you could go to the store and stack the 20% on to 30%. I did get three pairs of toothpick jeans and only one have I tried before so this was rolling the dice.

      Delete
    5. Damn, I never got that early access email or discount code either, oh well.

      Delete
    6. I didn't get the email or code either. Too bad, I would have bought some stuff yesterday instead of leaving it. I just couldn't bring myself to buy the full price @ only 30% off when they'll be 50% off in a month. At least that's the way it used to be…
