Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopping by a J.Crew store this weekend to see what's available (if anything!) in the SALE, or to see some NEW ARRIVALS {sigh!} in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

P.S. I noticed that many of you have already been reporting sale items (and in which stores) in other posts which by the way "thank you!" :) I really appreciate how helpful we are for each other!

  1. Hi. I have the tie neck tops in silk and cotton shipping to me. (It seems excessive to get both but I'm hoping seeing them side by side in real life will help me decide.) Any words of advice on the bra issue? I've avoided the cold shoulder trend because I despise strapless bras and have yet to find one that works and is comfortable enough to wear for more than a few minutes. But I guess that racerback bras will not work with the tie neck tops and strapless is the only choice? Any advice on bras that work would be much appreciated.

    1. TM, I have had two Prima Donna strapless bras (both at 30 pounds ago and two cup/band sizes larger and now) and absolutely love it. I got fitted at my local specialty bra shop and it really has made all of the difference with all of my clothing. I don't even feel like I'm wearing a strapless bra. I have the cotton tie neck top you ordered and wear the strapless with that. Most people are wearing the wrong size and taking the time and spending a little more money on quality bras is absolutely worth it in my opinion. I believe some of the online shops mentioned carry the brand as well.

    2. @TorontoModern, I have the cotton tie neck top and love it especially the lovely blue colour. I hate strapless bras and make due with mine when I wear this top. I'm pretty sure you'll have to wear strapless with the way the shoulders are cut. I too am hoping to find a better strapless. I will look at Anne's suggestion for Prima Donna (thank you @Anne) and was curious about trying Natori. I'm small chested and find the Natori feathers bras fit me best so I'm hoping I may have luck with their strapless. Nordstroms anniversary sale might be worth a look as bras that rarely go on sale are sometimes included.
I ordered the silk tie neck top on popback, hoping it ships although I don't need two tops like that. :)

  2. I have found that one of my strapless bras that work for a certain type of top, does not necessarily work for another. They can be tricky to lay correctly and to feel comfortable. I would recommend trying them on with the specific top, maybe with some assistance, like at Nordstrom. Places like Bare Necessities and HerRoom carry a wide variety of choices and off sizes. I am a 35 B which means a 36 strapless falls off and a 34 gives me a back muffin. I actually have a Gap Body strapless that has been a workhorse, I also like my Maidenform Bras. I would also love some other suggestions.

  3. The website promo banner states "Up to 70% off original prices," obviously referring to the extra 40/50 off sale. I've never seen them emphasize such a deep discount.

I won't be going - nothing in the new rollout for me. I'm over the heavily ruffles OTS styles and I never thought I'd say this but, even gingham is starting to look passé. I was more disciplined this year and didn't overbuy summer stuff so I'm enjoying what I have. I will need some work pieces for fall so I hope there will be more of a balance with casual trends in the next few rollouts!

    1. I remember seeing this promo last year and the year before that. It's not actually a deeper discount than the usual 40% off. Would be great if they did an actual 70% off the sale price ;-)))

    2. Hi Ruffles - I agree, I'm way over the styles on the site now. I like linen sweaters and gauzy tunics for summer, so I picked up some from eBay (past season JC - this year's linen sweater had dropped shoulders), cropped and frayed an older pair of white jeans by hand and I feel pretty good to go for summer. I'm also enjoying my older JC summer tops that actually cover bra straps - I can't do the tie-shoulder and spaghetti straps, and one OTS is enough for me.

Also, interesting that "Sale" is the first option on the left of the main page - wasn't it between "Blog" and "Factory"? They've certainly got a lot to get rid of. Anybody remember the 75% off final sale a few years back - I wonder if they'll do that again.

    3. I remember the 75% off of sale!! 2015? That was amazing, would love to see that again. And like you I found some great summer of 2016 items on eBay #luckyebayfinds

    4. Silver lining, good point on the "Sale" link being repositioned to first! I don't think that was an accident!

I do remember the 75 off, now that you mention it! I bought a number of linen tops/sweaters and Collection items in store that year that I am still wearing.

    5. even at 75 % off ...I can't find anything I can actually wear. re: strapless /off the shoulder...not me.

    6. I still have the black schoolboy that netted $50 during the 75% off promo. It's starting to show some wear, but I've definitely gotten my money's worth!

    7. I remember the 75% off sale! Still have a cashmere tee and laser cut circle midi skirt from that sale. Both cost around $25 cdn which was insane for cdn prices.

      Delete
    8. Ahhhh...the legendary 75% off sale. Gone but never forgotten! I got a beautiful laser cut shift dress for about $20, and a bikini bottom for about $5.

  4. I finally found a strapless bra that fit me great and is comfortable at Soma. I'm a 34D and with the Soma embraceable strapless, I'm not constantly adjusting it, it stays put. Highly recommend it. Before I always hated wearing strapless bras, but with this one I don't even know that I have it on.

  5. will drop off some returns later today. still holding on to a few curiosities whose 60-day probation has some time left. I did hit the RL sale and the latest YOOX promo, happy to wait and see if I'll be tempted by the upcoming Nordstrom's event.

The old Scout in me is thinking that someone at JC creatively found a way to use up scraps, offcuts, remnants and snippets of fabric and trims for this latest rollout.

    1. @Wellfedfred It makes me think of when my Grandmother would let down one of our dress hems or add length to one of our garments as kids, she would add a row of rick-rack, or ribbon, or something similar to hide the stitching or extension. Maybe all of those tacked on floppy remnants are for the same purpose, I can safely say that I don't need a bow and a peplum and shoulder ruffles on the same top so I have to believe there must be an ulterior motive!

  6. OT, but does anyone know if/when there is a Tory Burch coupon coming up e.g. friends and family? I am hoping to purchase a bag, but it's a bit pricey, and would love to have a discount of some sort. TIA.

  7. The outfit they have on the model and the pose/camera angle on the main webpage is terrible. It looks like a grown woman wearing crewcuts. No one at JC is getting it.

    1. You've hit the nail on the head, as that is the perfect description of that outfit. Eeek!

    2. And one about to do a boudoir shoot? Button your d*mn shirt and pull up the strap!

    3. Yes, Cass. Now when I see a new J Crew piece, I first imagine it on a small child. I'd I works, it's a definite pass for me. Too many of the looks are juvenile. Are they really going for the HS fast fashion crowd?

      Delete
    4. That is what I thought about that eyelet peplum top. It's cute, but I have a feeling it would look better on a child or a doll. The purple color is tempting. I look super young for my age as is though :(.

      Delete
    5. What's with all of the rainbow prints? Too busy. Too clownish.

      Delete
    6. Agreed. Not a fan. Too much. Definitely too busy for me.

      Delete
    7. And yes with the unbuttoned shirt falling off the shoulder. I don't get it. I know I dress pretty conservatively, especially up top because I don't have much cleavage, but who is this being marketed to when it's falling off like that? I don't mind the OTS stuff (just don't like it on me and I don't like wearing strapless bras) but now even a shirt that may be able to conceal a bra strap is falling off?

      Delete
    8. Agree about both the outfit and the pose on the website. Juvenile. I had to do a double take to confirm I wasn't on the Gymboree website!

      Delete
    9. ^ lol. I posted a pic on IG comparing the rainbow gingham fabric to chiclets and quite a few people posted that they love the fabric and all the colors, so to each her own. I think as an accessory (scarf, belt) it could be cute. I just typically don't wear that much color.

      Delete
    10. Hehe, Ruffles. Suz Has, I was just thinking of your post!

Indeed, to each their own. And I am sure some of these looks are being pulled off well. I just have this odd feeling about the juvenile clothing as it seems to fit into the general infantilization of society by marketers... I hope this is temporary from J Crew.

  8. I'll probably go to return the Collection Safari Jacket. The 'cinched waist' hits at my rib cage. I thought I looks like an ill-attired birdwatcher, whereas my brother said I was wearing a scout uniform. The fit was awful even on my short torso. It looked huge and boxy, and yet I could barely button it. That was the confusing part. If I cinched the so-called waist to make it look the least bit tailored, it was unbuttonable. I could see wearing it open, but I would like the option to close it. I tried this fully expecting it to be fabulous, and to wear over a tee for a slightly polished look. So disappointing. The color was also not as rich as I had hoped. The buttons, which I didn't care for in the pic, were nice in reality.

    1. Oh bummer :-( I'm not sure why so many brands seem to be shifting towards boxy cuts, but I feel like I'm seeing it more and more. I feel like this happens a lot with the Gap and even back when I was still shopping at Banana.

      Delete
    2. Oh no :(. Thanks for the detailed review! With a huge baby bump it's probably not a good idea for me right now.

      Delete
    3. JSR was right that there is too much room up top. It's too wide in general. TM93 I'm not sure who is loving the boxy cut. I rarely see it worn out in the wild. @lizteiden, you're welcome. I have a smallish chest, so that may be part of it, but I don't think that's the real issue. If you do try it, I hope you like it. I was hoping it would fill a real wardrobe need for me.

      Delete
    4. "Out in the wild" - luvvin it!

      Delete
    5. I can only assume these boxy cuts are cost-cutting measures...it's probably cheaper to cut a square with sleeves than to actually tailor a garment. Same for dropped shoulders.

      Delete
    6. Just returned sweater that i got for only 19.99 because the dropped shoulders looked terrible.

  9. OT, but on the off-chance that anyone is looking for or hoping to try the Point Sur skinny trumpet jean (Item F7468), there was a pair available in size 26 at the Columbus Circle store in NYC. They were on the sale rack, with 50% off, making them $75, if I'm not mistaken.

These received very good reviews, but I never ordered them because I knew they would be infinitesimally long on me. They were indeed almost a foot extra long on me, but I'm 4'11" (hemming would also lose the shape of the flare.)

The denim felt really nice, as if it were 'holding' you in, with comfortable stretch, but still fitted. They are *quite* high-waisted, so keep that in mind. I believe Fellow JCA Suz Has posted these on her IG and they looked awesome on her (at least i think it was this style?) I think the shade is darker IRL than what it appears like online.

    1. Yes, I got them in black. I didn't like the fit of the denim ones. They're a fabulous jean for a long lean look. Perfect with heels. I'm 5'6" and the length is just right for me with a 2 1/2 ish inch heel.

    2. Thanks for remembering. :)

  10. I'm stopping by a store in a few hours to pick up an online order. Anyone know the sale %?

    1. @eeps, the Columbus Circle store I visited at lunch (also for a store pick-up :-)) had 50% off sale. No other sales, I don't think.

Earlier this week I did another pick-up at the Fifth Ave store and they also had 50% off.

Lots of stuff in the sale section (so much so that they seem to have taking over more real estate in the stores.)

  11. I'm going tonight to return the orange A-line dress with sash. The top was HUGE in the size 4. I would consider a size 2 but it's all sold out already. Oh, well. I get $110 back to spend elsewhere!

    1. I saw your post in reviews. At 5'10" 118 I can't imagine how you could be any bigger than a 00. I'm 5'6" and about 120 with athletic shoulders and a long narrow torso and I usually wear a 00/0 in bottoms and my tops and blazers vary between 0-4 depending on cut. Of course it all depends on measurements (I am lean and muscular and probably weigh more than I look) but I haven't had too many issues when I ask for specific measurements. My daughter is 5'10 plus and maybe 125/130 or more and she usually wears the same size as me.

      Delete
    2. I have bony, wide hips and my waist isn't tiny (26) so I am usually S/2-4. So on top, I am probably an XS but on the bottom, not so much. =)

      Delete
    3. Also, I lied. I went to J.Crew last night after a couple drinks with co-workers and wound up getting the Downtown Field Jacket and the knot-back tank-- neither one was on sale!

    4. @American Observer, that's funny. Hope you love the jacket and tank :)

  12. Are J Crew shoes good quality? I just bought my first pair, the Colette for a good price and I haven't worn the long term but I'm already in love with the fit! My husband says "why get shoes at j crew they aren't known for shoes?" Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sarah Taylor--I have 5+ pairs of j crew shoes and depending on the style, the comfort level is nice. Overall, I feel it's decent but not for the original price. Getting them on sale is more palatable IMO. That said, the styles of many of their shoes are SO STYLISH AND CUTE, so it's hard to not buy them. Enjoy your new shoes!

      Delete
    2. For style I have several pair. Durability and comfort are lacking IMO. The footbeds have minimal padding, so even with a good fit, my feet tend to hurt after wearing my J Crew shoes. I have other shoes of much better comfort and I would say overall better quality. J Crew shoes don't look cheap, however, and they're usually super cute and stylish, like Wendy said. It's a tradeoff.

      Delete
    3. Back then all of J.Crew's shoes were made in Italy. Really good quality, made in the
same factory as some of the high end brands. All that has changed, since the company has scaled back with $. Now their shoes are either import or made in Italy.

      Delete
    4. I think J Crew has some cute shoes that can be pretty affordable for what they are if you wait until they go on clearance with additional percentage off, but you've got to be picky with what you buy, I think. The Colettes are one of the good ones for sure! Personally, I wish J Crew would stop using that hard, weird plastic for the soles in place of leather or rubber. It's usable, but an obvious cost-cutting measure.

      Delete
    5. I like their shoes, but I don't buy anything full price or with much of a heel. The dulci and sloan styles are some of my favorites. I collect second hand pairs in fun colors and prints on eBay and Poshmark.

      Delete
    6. love the styles and colours...but quality is consistent with sale price only. never worth full price..not well made.

      Delete
    7. I find that they stretch outrageously. I arrived barefoot at a solemn military ceremony, suede colorblock Averys in hand, because the shoes kept getting wider and I kept walking out of them. BTW this was a replacement pair, I had the same strange growth problem with the first pair too. I think I've finally learned.

      Delete
    8. My experience has been very good with J.Crew shoes. I have several pairs, some going back more than 8+ years. Look for ones that are made in Italy- they are the best quality.

      Delete
    9. @wellfedfred what a lesson learned! I feel for you.

      Delete
    10. On sale I think they're great, but I buy everything on sale. Ive definitely had some stretch, which I think happens with certain types of shoes, the shape of my foot and certain materials—it's happened to me with made in Italy Elsie pumps because the shoes (even fabric upper) are leather inside and that conforms to your foot. For the shape of my foot I need to size down about a full size in them. I've sold several pairs of Elsies after wearing them once. I don't have the problem with a more rounded toe.

      Delete
    11. Most of my shoes are Jcrew from heels, ankle boots, espadrilles, sandals etc. Most are made in Italy which I agree with others that it makes a difference. I've only had a few pairs that are really uncomfortable but overall I've been happy with them. Jcrew has some great styles and colours which is why I've bought a lot of shoes from them.

      Delete
  13. No online action or store visits for me. Most likely because of the crazy amount I've bought the past few months from 'crew. Having said that I've very pleased with what I've picked up from them, both in price points (due to the constant sale action) and design/quality.

I did get some tees and a pair of shorts from the Gap. Feels like they've stepped things up. Quality appears to be solid and the prices (with the 40% off promo) are very attractive. I tend to buy more expensively in fall/winter and go more economically (cheap) in spring/summer. Winter clothing costs more and sadly gets worn much more in this climate.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have also purchased more from Gap lately.
For us Canucks not so much of a price jump from the US.
good summer casual clothing at great prices- re 40% off

    2. I've bought a lot at Gap this year, too. They've had a few 50% off everything sales where I've picked up several great pieces: jeans, scarves (Gap had a great collection of wool and wool/cotton scarves last fall/winter), and some gorgeous cotton and merino sweaters. I was wearing all Gap yesterday and thought my outfit looked great: eyelet skirt, denim-lyocell tank, super-soft denim jacket, all purchased last summer.

  15. Sadly I have to go return the cashmere cardigan I got in meadow green - the color is amazing but the arms are way too tight. Can't size up - item is sold out. Rats. Was wondering if the arms would stretch out if I wore it for a while.

  17. I stopped in Friday and tried on some items from the latest mini rollout. My SA said she'd know Monday about the status of a style guide.

I tried on the rainbow gingham skirt, one shoulder ruffle top in stripe, button back stripe peplum top, tie shirting stripe skirt and drapey ruffle cami (loved this), lavender tie shoulder eyelet top, dot sequin Jackie set and a beautiful embroidered orange dress that I can't find online. 19. I stopped in to see some of the mini rollout. My SAs weren't sure about the status of an August Style Guide but they said a lot of customers are asking.

Sundance got my $ this weekend. I bought some beautiful, unique things: a handmade wool embroidered belt, silver necklaces w real semiprecious stones, and a waxed canvas jacket for DH. The casual, boho vibe isn't for everyone, but I like the authenticity of knowing who made a piece, and you won't see their stuff coming and going everywhere you look.
