JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine (in this post) says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Review - I received the STRIPED TRENCH COAT yesterday. I take a 4 in the Lady Day winter coats and ordered a 4 in the STRIPED TRENCH COAT. After I ordered I saw that Ina Mack recommended sizing down in her IG post but most the reviews on the website said true to size. I found the 4 works well for me - I have a pear shape so a 2 might have been too sung across the hips for me. I use the second button on the tabs on the back of the coat to bring the waist in just a touch. The coat is a nice weight and has cute bandana print navy and white lining. I also noticed it was marked down to $159.99 today and there is 30% off sale. Great coat. Feels like classic Crew to me. I think I'll be wearing it for years to come.

    1. Thanks for the review, Luxette. This was the only item from the February catalog that I was interested in, but I do not need another coat so I'd been watching it from afar. ; ) I may hold back and see if it gets a second cut, but it is super cute!

    2. Luxette, I've seen others try that coat on in store and it looks so nice - loved it on Ina as well. Like silver_lining, I have far too many coats for the short mild weather season that NY has, otherwise I'd grab this one. Looks like a really well-made, lovely piece. Thanks for the review!

    1. Anna Maria-I called CS twice; asking about stock. Both times, CS said it's sold out company wide and no notice of ordering more. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for popbacks!

  3. Embroidered star Tippi -- this may have been the one item I've purchased from J. Crew in six months that doesn't look like rags -- probably because I haven't worn it yet. Because I'm at a loss at to how to wear it. What color bottoms (I don't do beige khakis -- it's shown with a khaki looking skirt). How have you all worn it? Also, something under it? Something over it? What colors? In theory, the navy and gold is gorgeous together, but I'm finding it hard to style.

    1. I have only worn mine once but I paired it with a gold No wool pencil skirt, navy tights, & navy suede booties. Went full on matchy-match & received about a zillion compliments that day! I would also wear it with denim (chambray layered under, or over jeans with a navy striped button-up underneath). Also - I thought it may look good with pink as I like navy & mustard paired with pink separately, so why not together?

    2. That should say "gold No 2 wool pencil skirt."

    3. I bought this item when it first debuted in the fall, have worn it three times, with a trip to the cleaners and so far it is issue-free. Hopefully yours will hold up in the long run as well. I like to wear mine with burgundy (faux leather skirt, for example) and ivory (pencil skirt), though that color might not work for you if you're not crazy about khaki. I also like to wear mine with a dark tan/olive color, though again, not sure if that's too similar to khaki tones. (Maybe a dark green?) I love Taylor's gold pencil suggestion above!! That sounds gorgeous.

I generally don't wear button-downs under my Tippis, only b/c my office is 100 degrees in winter and I get so hot, but I think that look is so nice. Cass's shirt suggestions below sound like so much fun!

    4. I have the star tippi and have found it surprisingly versatile! I have worn it with a tartan skirt for the holidays with shades of navy, red and green (love that pattern mixing), denim, navy ankle pants, black pants (sorry but I love navy & black), and burgundy - including a pretty burgundy and gold tweed skirt for the holidays. It looks fantastic layered over a blue oxford, a chambray shirt, or a striped light blue button down. It's so versatile and I get a lot of compliments on it!

    5. Thanks for all the tips! I like the idea of burgundy (or even a black leather skirt, since the richness of the navy, gold and black leather would compliment each other). It would look nice with ivory / winter white, too. Or even cream denim as the weather turns nicer.

  4. Try with mid to lighter colored jeans and a cotton button down, white or striped, layered underneath.

  5. I was thinking today about the "iconic" J Crew items in my closet and how easy they are to style. Today I wore my Downtown Field in Canvas - not the most trend-forward of items but it is beautifully made, stylish, goes with everything and always looks polished. I got four compliments on it and as I said, not exactly a new arrival.

I'm glad I have a closet full of workhorse pieces like this that have a little something special about them. Paint splatter etc. will never have that kind of polish.
