"Looking to VENT" with J.Crew

This is the weekly "Looking to VENT with J.Crew" post, a place to share our not-so-stellar experiences with J.Crew.

If you have recently experienced a frustrating situation with J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including poor experiences with purchases & orders, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I'll go...an old vent has reared its ugly head again. I finally bit on the gingham ruffle hem top in tall. $49 pre-promo. Then I noticed the reg size is $39, and petite is $35. Grrr. If JC's policy was that special sizes are more or less, that would be one thing-but this is haphazard. I asked for them to match the petite price-no dice. Some line about demand/availability, which is total bunk. Tall had the most sizes available, and was the most expensive. JC, you make me crazy with this random stuff...

    1. @Wendy, I agree, that doesn't make much sense at all. Like you said, I could see if their special sizes were consistently priced either more or less than Regular, but that is certainly not the case. Last fall, I stalked a tweed blazer in Petite -- for ages, the Regular was on sale, and eventually sold out. Petite wouldn't budge in pricing and didn't sell out either. (Many months later, it finally did go on sale to match Regular's pricing, but if I had to guess, I would bet this is a website glitch, rather than intentional.) Who knows, but I agree, the lack of consistency is frustrating.

    2. Hi ladies - I wonder if it would be worth it to purchase the regular and then exchange for a petite/tall. They'll honor the price paid when you do an exchange for the same item... or is the issue that they have different item numbers? That's annoying!

    3. I've noticed this at Madewell, too: sometimes the tall/taller length jeans will be priced higher or lower than the regular length. Being on the short side, if the price difference were significant enough, I'd purchase the longer length (if cheaper) and have them hemmed at MW's expenses.

    4. I have the same top in tall, and noticed the same thing re: price, but I will say for this item, I kind of get it, because I felt like the proportions on the top were so much better in the tall, versus being really weirdly wide and cropped in the regular.

  2. Yes, as a legitimate tall this is very frustrating. It can't be based on more fabric used; if that were the case why aren't the larger regular and petite sizes more expensive? Can't be having to use a different pattern because then petites would be higher too. It's irritating. I already have fewer available choices due to my height and long arms and now I have to pay more? Come to think of it that IS the reason--they charge more because they can.

    1. I concur. As a very tall woman, I think it's not fair that they have Final Sales on tall merchandise. We can't try on our actual sizes in store and J.Crew's sizing has been haphazard for the past 3 years.

  3. This is not a vent, picked up the vibrant paisley ruffle front top today in store on sale for $79.99 less 40% off less 15% bounce back card. I think it was about $40.00. I am wearing it to a lunch tomorrow honoring one of my physicians but need suggestions for a bottom??? I am definitely wearing my calf hair Lillian wedges. Would prefer to wear pants than a skirt.

    2. You could wear navy, tan or even black for your bottom. I think the teddie pants or a similar crop could work well with your wedges. I don't how "formal" the luncheon is, but if it's more casual, you could wear a denim skirt or denim crop pants like the Point Sur. Enjoy!

    3. Argh. Lost my post. I could see that top with a muted green bottom—olive, fatigue, sage. I love how those pinks look with muted greens. Of course black always works too, and chocolate would be nice. An unexpected pairing might be something more masculine inspired, like houndstooth or glen plaid. I love that contrast with the ore feminine paisley.
Any silhouette could work, skinny, wide leg crop, etc. really depends on what you feel most confident in and well, the weather too!

    4. What did you end up wearing? I haven't seen that shirt in person but it looks so pretty.

  4. My vent: I placed a Madewell order on 9/2 and it is still open!

    1. Suz Has,
Agree that Madewell is ridiculously slow and/or not honest about what's in stock. I placed an order for shoes in two different sizes and a dress on Monday. All three were supposedly in stock. I'm getting one pair of the shoes tomorrow. The dress and other pair of shoes haven't been shipped. At this rate, if the shoes that arrive tomorrow fit, I may cancel the other order.

    2. My order is still open. I'm annoyed.

    3. That's awful. I would call. My last item of the three that I ordered on Monday just shipped overnight. I'm supposed to receive it on Tuesday.

    4. I just sent an email. At least after a week, let me know the deal.

    5. Same here Suz Has! Wellllll.... I am kinda glad to hear it's not just my order. I'll give a call today too. .........

  6. Not a vent..more an observation: Did J.Crew scale back on their Collection photoshoots? They used to post the photos every roll-out, but now they haven't. I like to look at the styling because its editorial.

  7. Using the search term preorder on the website returns a lot of the new items again this month in case anyone wants a peak.

  8. Another vent re: shipping times...I placed an order on Monday the 5th and it's still open...ugh. So annoying! Not that it's remotely cold enough to wear the wool blazer or jeans I ordered but...ship my stuff!

    1. I also ordered on the 5th, and none of the items have shipped yet. It's making me wonder if mine sold out before the store(s) fulfilled the order... My last couple orders shipped super fast. It's shipping roulette ;)

    2. Hope you guys get yours. USPS shows package was delivered today except there's no package in the mailbox or on the front porch. This is a first, but nevertheless disappointing. CS was great; tried to reorder but items are sold out. So, they credited my card.

    3. @Mygoody, hope your Drake stuff wasn't in that package!

  9. The cashmere cable that I ordered on a popback arrived and it wasn't the cashmere cable I ordered (they sent me the pom-pom one that I could have bought for much cheaper at the end of the season). Oh well, at least that gave me free shipping on the $9.99 striped scarf in red/navy that was really the item I wanted.
