Sought & Found: Did you visit J.Crew this {past} Weekend?

This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopped by a J.Crew store this past weekend to see what's available (if anything!) in the SALE, or to see some NEW ARRIVALS {sigh!} in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store was/ is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

  1. I did visit this weekend. The sale section was an additional 40% off.

  2. I have the Madewell "Softplaid" scarf (item #E5200), which is 100% acrylic but says dry clean only. I need to wash it, but I'd rather not have it dry cleaned. Do you think I can put it in the washing machine on delicate/handwash? I love it and don't want to ruin it. It has fringe, if that makes a difference in your answer. Thanks for any help!

    1. Hi cate - in looking at the item pic, I can't tell if the perimeter of the scarf has stitching to keep it unraveling further? That may be why they don't want you to wash it because the agitation of the washing machine may cause more (unintentional) fraying. How about Dryel or a similar product? That may freshen up the scarf without affecting the fringe.

    2. Hi silver_lining, thanks for taking a look at the item pic. The long sides of the scarf have a short fringe (.5-1") with no reinforcement and the short sides of the scarf have long (3-4") fringes with no reinforcement and they are just twisted so not much is keeping the yarn fringe together. I like your idea about Dryel (I have never tried it) or maybe I could hand wash in Woolite. Thank you!

      Delete
    3. I have heard that woollite is really hard on clothing. I have heard of shampoo or a tiny bit of dish washing soap....whatever you do use try to use only a very tiny amount of soap and rinse well. HTH

    4. I do machine-wash my acrylic scarves (in a lingerie bag, handwash or delicate cycle, gentle detergent, & line dry). I've not had any issues. They've all been tightly woven scarves, though. I did machine-wash a more loosely woven wool-acrylic blend scarf recently and it shrank and pilled horribly. I'd second the recommendation for Dryel or hand-washing. Good luck!

    5. Thanks Unknown and cobalt! I bought some Dryel. I have never used it before, but I think it should do the trick. My scarf got beer on it on Halloween lol! It looks and feels fine, but it smells like beer, yuck! :D

      Delete
    6. I have washed similar scarves by hand and air dried with good results.

      Delete
    7. Dryel is nothing more than putting the scarf in the dryer and spraying it with fragrance. Over time the beer left in the material could cause damage like discoloration. I would hand wash with a touch of dish soap or shampoo, rinse, then lay flat on a towel to dry. Make sure to smooth out the wrinkles. You can also use the towel to roll up the scarf to get most of the moisture out. Good luck!

      Delete
    8. I agree with dry clean diva. I would spot clean like she suggested and maybe you could still do the dryel afterwards?

      Delete
    9. Thanks maryeb, Dry Clean Diva, and Lauren! I hadn't thought about the beer left in causing trouble, but you may be right. Hm, maybe I will try hand washing it instead. Thanks again, I really appreciate everyone's advice!

  3. No store visit for me, but I do have a question for you ladies who love the Merino Wool Tippi sweaters. What year would you say the fit and quality was the best? Is this year's version as good as previous ones? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Melissa - good to see you! I think it's a matter of personal preference on fit - this year's Tippi (E1277) has longer arms and a little narrower neckline, while previous years have true 3/4 sleeves and a slightly wider (but not boatneck) neckline. The new one's also slightly shorter in the body. Personally, I prefer the fit of the previous model (46725). If you go back about 12 weeks on my Insta, I compared the old and new Tippis in the same color (heather aqua). I didn't keep the new one so I can't speak to quality, but I'm sure another JCA could chime in. HTH!

    2. Thanks silver_lining! It's good to be back! :)

I think I would probably prefer the older version, too. I recently found the original version of the Leopard Tippi on Poshmark, and was reminded of how much I like the fit of the sweater in general, so now I am contemplating another one or two in solid colors. Hopefully I can find a couple more on Poshmark, Ebay, or the JCA selling post. Thanks again for your help!

    3. Melissa i find the fit of the new Tippi better for me with the slighly longer sleeves and the neckline.

  4. I haven't been to the store in a while but I did place an online order - the graphic peony collection skirt, navy/white tissue turtleneck, grey cardigan with jeweled pockets and the black/beige dot cap sleeve silk blouse.

  5. Went to make returns yesterday and left with nothing. They had holiday music playing already both at the mall and in the store. I was barely 12 hours out of my Halloween costume!!! Can't they at least wait until Thanksgiving?

    1. Oh, I HATE that! I think its a good idea to put out the merchandise for early shoppers (I wish I could get my act together early!), but please don't start with the music and 'trimming' too early!

      Delete
    2. I'm the opposite. I don't mind getting into the holiday mood early, I'm all for cocoa, snowflakes, and snoopy, but I hate the materialism of the season being pushed early.

  7. I did run by my store. Sale is 40% off with accessories 50% off. I did not buy anything at the store. They offered me a December catalog. There are some cute things, but overall not that impressed. There is a really cute plaid sweater and a plaid scarf with multi colored pom poms (featured during fall 2015 fashion week) The shoes were not cute, IMO, and the jewelry was dreadful. There is lots of plaid and buffalo check. They have several styles plaid shoes, but I didn't like them. The navy/red buffalo excursion vest is back and the buffalo plaid shirt jacket in navy/cream. They have also added navy/red like the factory version, price was $118.00. There is a fair isle excursion vest in blue and cream that I didn't care for at all. That is about all I can remember. Oh, there was a pair of watch plaid pants and a watch plaid regent top coat. They looked pretty cute.

    8. Hi, LilyBart! J Crew Factory has straight & narrow cords on sale for $38.99 in "snow". I have a pair in navy and they are similar to the matchsticks from retail J Crew (but with NO lyocell). Full size run is available; I would wait for an extra percentage off sale.

    1. I don't have any way to share pictures of the style guide but I forgot to mention that I did order the majesty peacoat in deep pacific on sale minus 40% off. The price is comparable to what it will be when it reaches the clearance store so I went ahead and got it. I think it will be very pretty for holiday with all the plaids.

    2. You have the holiday style guide!!! you are winning the J Crew lottery as of late with warehouse purchases and now a dec. guide. I must confess I am in deep envy at this point. Just dying for new arrivals....as I have nothing to wear....
I do love the black watch plaid ! C

    3. anyone know when the guide will be up on pinterest . ? My guess would be about 3 weeks from now???? J Crew is pretty much just shooting itself in the foot with the inconsistencies of guides to be given out or kept under lock and key until we don't care anymore.

    9. Just got the shipping notice for my peacoat. I now see that all sizes are sold out in the deep pacific online. I would bet there are still a few to be had around in stores. I also ordered a pair of the patchwork cargo pants in lamppost green. I almost can't believe I bought them, the price is still pretty steep but I got the last pair in my size. Has anyone seen these, any feedback? I really like this type of pant instead of wearing jeans all the time.

    10. Since the next roll out is next Monday, Pinterest photos will most likely start uploading Wednesday. And as you know, Women's will be last to upload, so count on seeing the entire style guide finished by Sunday.

    11. @doodledachshund, I tried those pants when the first came out. I sized down, but they were still kind of loose and frumpy on me. (I'm short, though). The color was quite nice. One of the things that I didn't like about them is there's some "distressing" that seems really inauthentic, for lack of a better word. Like patches of stitching, but not really distressed. I tried another pair of J. Crew pants in the past that had a similar thing and I returned them. I don't know why it bugs me, but it does. It's like the jeans that they recently did with the faux holes (I think they are the Reid toothpicks or something). But, every pair has the same hole and the distressing looks too uniform. I tried those jeans on and liked the fit, but I couldn't deal with the faux distressing. They just seem like of dorky -- like DISTRESSING FOR BUTTONED UP DRESSERS or something. (and I have and wear distressed jeans from other designers, so it's not the distressing that bothers me). Anyway, off on a tangent . . . On the green pants, its not that noticeable. If I were taller and the drawstring waist wasn't as frumpy on me, they would have been winners. Cute design.

    12. Thank you for the response. I totally get your answer. I am a little worried about that myself, especially on the back of the pants. They were not final sale so we'll see.

  10. Has anyone seen the Elsie Glitter pumps in store or in person? I've read pretty much all positive reviews and I'm tempted to get them but at final sale I'm so unsure.
FWIW the Gemma flats didn't fit my feet at all, which rarely ever happens to me, so I'm concerned about these fitting.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Suzanne - I haven't see the Elsie glitter pumps irl. If I was sure of my sizing, I would lean toward getting them.

I tried the Gemma flats a few times and the 7.5 seemed to fit a couple of times, but I'm sure going up 1/2 size to 8 would've been the wiser choice had I bought them. The toe box is point and/or narrow. That's a problem I've had with some J. Crew pumps. In my blog post I have a picture of the shape of my foot -- not pointy or tapered -- next to the Elsa for shape comparison.

    2. I saw that on your blog! Very informative! I don't mind toe cleavage and have a leopard pair of Anne Klein pumps with a similar silhouette that I really like. But still...I HATE the thought of buying something that doesn't work!

    3. Suzanne - If I get a chance to try more Elsies in 7.5 & 8, I will definitely give a report :)

      Delete
    4. I have them and really like them. They are high but relatively comfortable. Glitter seems to be adhered well and looks nice. I found the fit to be TTS - I'm typically an 8 and these worked in an 8 for me. There is toe cleavage, which I don't mind but some people dislike.

      Delete
    5. Thanks so much for the info! Does the glitter appear really gold or deeper, as one of the reviews said? Do they look good with jeans? ;)

  11. Slightly off topic, but I was wondering if anyone has tried the Alley Straight jeans from Madewell? I was thinking of trying the Davis wash since they are on sale now. Thanks for any advice!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I tried them a while ago. I was wondering if they are a good replacement for the old Madewell Rail Straight jeans. There was something I didn't like about them but I can't remember what. They didn't fit me as well as the Rail Straight jeans. The rise is higher on the Alley Straight jeans, compared with the old Rail Straight jeans.

More recently, I tried the Alley Straight Drop-Hem version and I almost kept them but there was no dropped hem. They don't look like they do in the web site photos. They were literally just cut off straight and left unfinished. I didn't like the look at the hem so I returned them, but I thought they fit me well enough that time.

      Delete
    2. Forgot to say, I did not try the Davis wash.

      Delete
    3. I have a pair of them (don't know the name of the wash; I got them in store about a year ago). I really love them! They are bit slouchier than skinny jeans, which I like, and the rise is just above the hips. They are a cotton/poly/lycra blend, so they do stretch a bit after wearing, in the waist area, not the legs or knees.

      Delete
    4. I love alley straight! I have 2 pairs and they are my fave everyday jeans. Not super tight like skinnies, but still fitted enough to wear tucked into tall boots, and not look weird (ankle hugging) if I wear sneakers with them. Slightly higher rise is very flattering. Definitely go a size or two down (as reviewers say), they run a tad big and stretch out a bit. I take a 28 in alley straight and a 29 or 30 in the JC matchstick jeans. Though they do stretch a bit, it is limited to the first day of wear, so I can often wear mine more than one day before they need washing. I'm not a huge madewell fan, but these have really been good jeans for me.

      Delete
    5. I have a pair of the Alley Straight jeans (can't r'ber the wash) and I love them! Not much at Madewell is ... madewell, bar their denim.

The rail straight jeans were my favorite but then the Alley straight jeans superseded them. They're straight, but very slim, and because of the stretchy material, they're almost skinny but not quite. And super comfy - I don't like skinny jeans because of the tightness in the crotch and with the alley straight jeans this is not a problem. And yes, high rise. I hope they don't discontinue the cut.

      Delete
    6. Thanks so much for all the help ladies! Julie Taylor, it sounds like we are the same size. I ordered the 28 and I also ordered the flea market flare overalls since they were marked down. Can't wait to try them!

  12. Also off topic, but I had a jeans question. Back in 06-08 when I was in college, JCrew made low rise jeans and I loved them. Are any of JCrews current jeans not mid-high rise? Last time a looked a year and half ago everything had a very high rise, even the things that were supposed to be mid rise, not that I'm a huge of mid rise. I really like JCrew jeans, but I've had to go other places, especially when you combine with the ankle length. It's like a hobbit cut or something.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I really don't think any are less than a mid-rise.

      Delete
    2. Hi Jessica - I agree with cate. They're starting to put the rise measurements in the item description and I don't think I've seen anything lower than 8.75" or so.

If you love the '06-'08 jeans, know your size and have the patience to look, I've found eBay to be great for JC jeans. The matchsticks, hipslungs, and boy jeans from then definitely had a lower rise, and I think they even stamped the year on the interior pocket.

JC tends to change everything and then beat it to death, so soon enough there will be all low-rise jeans and you won't be able to find a mid or high rise! ; ) It would be nice to see some variety.

      Delete
    3. Thanks I didn't realize they were putting the rise measurement in the description. JCrew seems to have the bad habit of saying everything "sits at the hip" so I've learned to completely disregard the online description and it's hard to tell fit by the way the models are wearing it. They often aren't even wearing their size!

I've found almost new JCrew jeans at the goodwill and that's awesome, unfortunately the toothpick didn't come out out until the rise change, I think, so the skinniest they come in a low rise is matchstick.
