J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Hi JCAs. Review of the bi-stretch cotton patio pants in burgundy on Gigi's Gone Shopping.

  2. A follow-up to my washing and accidentally machine drying of my Seaside Pants. I re-washed them, shook them out, and hung them up to dry this time, pulling down on the legs to try to stretch the length. They're dry now and they are pretty close to the same size they were when I bought them. The length may be slightly shorter, but the hips/seat are fine. I compared them with my white pair which I haven't worn yet and they look very close to the same in length. So I think they are okay again.

    1. Hi cate, I'm happy for you, what a relief! I only have one pair but love mine. Glad they're not ruined.

    3. Thanks jan & gigi! :) I am very glad too. I have the Madewell scarf in the washing machine now, I'm hoping it is as lucky as the Seaside pants.

  3. Hi guys – Thought I write up some quick reviews with a few item:

    1) Regent top coat – Wow these sell out fast and I am glad I was able to snag one of them during promo. The “pink” color (not the new sorbet color) is not quite pink as most reviewer stated online, it is more of a heather lilac color, with a hint of purple. I don’t own any coats in this color scheme and while it isn’t as pink as I had expected, I like the unique color. In terms of material and fit, the coat is definitely not for heavy duty winter storm wear…matter of fact it is quite thin, it is heavier then the regent blazer but without the thinsulate it is exactly what it is – just a top coat for fall. I vary between size 12-16 at JCREW, for most coats/blazers I sized up to 16 because of the tight arm issue. But for the top coat I tried both 14 and 16, I prefer the look of the 14. It is a bit more streamlined and fitted, even though I can only fit a thin sweater (eg. Tippi, cashmere tee etc) under. This coat is a much better fit then the top coat version that came out last year (melton top coat), fabric is more fluid, not as stiff, the body is slimming/lean as oppose to cocoon out. So, it depends on how you like the coat to fit, I would say it is TTS. Good quality for the price when you can get it on promo, considering you are getting a “coat” for almost the price of a blazer at JCREW these days.

    2) Double Cloth Long Peacoat – If I can only buy 1 coat this fall, this coat would be IT for me. The Peruvian pink is true to its color – light pink. The material feels slightly heavier then the regent top coat but not by much. I took my true size 14 again, and compare to the regent top coat, this coat has a bit more room around the arm and also even when I button everything up. So I would say it is TTS to just slightly big, take the smaller of your JCREW size. The cut of the body is very flattering, nipped at the waist, the details of the “belt” at the back adds some visual interest to the otherwise usual long coat. Normally I found double breasted coats hard to wear because when I leave them open sometimes it just feels like there are just too much material in the front and it can look sloppy, but not this coat. It maintains its lean look even when you unbutton the coat so really, all around thumbs-up from me. NOW, the ONLY complain I have on this coat are the CHEAP buttons. This isn’t new, we are all accustomed to cost cutting measures at JCREW but for almost $400 without promo, I expect the buttons to at least STAY ON. It isn’t something I can’t fix, but seriously JCREW, get with it already.

    1. I've been eyeing both of these coats, so these reviews are really helpful! Thanks.

  4. continue...few more:

    3) Full length Campbell Trouser Bi-stretch wool – I realized over the years I’ve been brainwashed by JCREW to only wear “high-water” pants or ankle length pants because it is suppose to be most flattering etc. I owned about 50 pairs of all kinds of pixie, minnie, track pants, drapey pants that comes up to above my ankle. Frankly I was getting a bit tired of the skinny cropped pants trend and decided to order a few of the full length pants to try on during promo. These are quite amazing, when you found the right size. I took a 14 in these and the slight stretch make them fit pretty good for me around the waist. Yes, I do have mommy muffin top, very hard to find pants that aren’t elastic waist that will fit the mom-belly without having to go up in size, I was surprised the Campbell trouser fits nicely in my size. I am also about 5’7 tall, these pants looks great with 2-3 inch pumps without needing alterations for me. I ordered the elm color, it looks olive online but in reality it is a bit darker, more like military green, I still like the color enough to keep it. Thought I mention though that there is no lining, but I am used to the bi-stretch wool so it doesn’t bother me.

    4) Preston Pants – These are high-waisted with a flare, runs small like most reviewers said online. My size 14 I could barely button it and it makes the behind look too scandalous for work. I re-ordered in size 16 but still undecided about these pants. The pink is awesome again (JCREW does pink pretty well this season as you can tell I am smitten with the color) but I am just not so sure about the high-waist/flare style for my body type. Maybe the right size is the key to make all the difference, but right now I wasn’t wowed by it as much as I did with the Campbell trouser.

    5) Sweater skirt (E3044) – I love these, despite the mixed review online. I ordered my true size L. These fits like a tube skirt, because of the knit material it will feel more snug then your pencil skirt. It does show the lumps and bumps, so probably do need to wear shapely underwear or spanx. I personally cannot wear cropped top or tucking shirts inside these skirts, but with a slightly oversized/longer sweater over these skirt it really makes the outfit. These are almost midi length on me (mid-calf), looks fantastic with both flats or pumps. The lemon zest is bright with just a hint of green (not like a true sun yellow). No lining but it doesn’t seem to be see-through to me (some reviews online says it is somewhat see-through). I also don’t get the zipper at the back, while it doesn’t pucker out or anything for me, it serves no purpose (you can pull up or down the skirt without zipping or unzipping the zipper) and probably would look more streamlined without the zipper. I still like these skirts a lot and would recommend anyone who looks for an alternative style to the typical pencil skirt.

    1. Thank you sooo much. as a size 12 . I love to hear how my and your size fits compared to gals who are xsmalls. I also love the long pea coat. do not have it yet....but am stalking the grey.

    2. Couture, I also want to say thanks for the reviews as a fellow size 12/14 :) I also loved the Campbell trousers - I have a smaller waist/larger hips and I found these to be very flattering. The Prestons worked for me but they are definitely high waisted - if you don't love them, you won't wear them. I've been debating the pink ones!!

I, too have a closet full of ankle length pants which I do enjoy but I find myself looking for full length pants more lately. I have several packages coming this week - I ordered the factory wool flannel trousers in maroon and a pair of boot cut jeans. Will report back.

I have been interested to try the sweater skirt so thank you for the detailed review!

    3. Ladies it truly is my pleasure! I always wanted to do reviews because of my size, I do find that it is rare to see JCREW reviews from the larger end, because not everything is available to be tried on in store, and most importantly, not every style can be flattering for those who has a bit more junk in the trunk LOL. I will make sure that I take the time to do more postings here =)

@Ann - The Fab Life: Please post review on the factory wool flannel trousers! I was eyeing them this morning but ultimately decided that I will wait till I get my preston pants (in the right size) to give it another chance on flare legs. I think my problem is the opposite - I have larger waist and narrower hips (so like the unfortunate mom-pear-shape), when the pants highlight the waist it prob is highlighting my enormous waistline also....maybe that's why I didn't like them as much on me.

But if you can rock it yes they absolutely look fabulous and so chic!!

P.S. Try the sweater skirts I encourage everyone =)

    4. Thanks for your review on the Sweater Skirt, Couture! I just wished it came in more colors. The grey one is sold out in my XS size, and I'm not that brave to buy the yellow or pink. I'm surprised that it fits like that. I first saw it on Jenna Lyons, she wore the yellow with a Celine stripe shirt. She must've sized up because it didn't look tight on her....

    5. Thanks Couture! I've been eyeing that lemon sweater skirt for quite some time. Pink is my second choice. This is especially helpful since I haven't had any luck with finding the skirt in store.
I'd also love to try the pink campbell trousers (as you can tell I love color). What is the percentage of wool content? I do have concerns with them being itchy since they are unlined.

      Delete
    6. @ Ann - what size did you order in the factory wool trousers? I noticed that they are final sale. I hover between 8-10. I normally would go to 10 in pants and pencil skirts and 8 in an a-line. TIA

    7. Couture, thank you, I'm loving your reviews! I ordered the "heather elm" in the Campbell trousers, and while the color tones in with a lot of things I have/ bought/ am stalking, I find the fabric unbearably itchy. I'm going to try a size larger, because the cut is so terrific!

    8. I too am very grateful for reviews from a curvy J Crewer : )

    9. @ Melodie - The content of the bi-stretch campbell pants are as follow:

      55% wool // 20% Viscose // 19% Polyester // 6% elastane

If you have sensitive skin or are sensitive to wool these will be quite itchy. I on the other hand, probably have dead skins (due to too busy taking care of my child and not taking care of myself) I won't feel a thing if wearing pants made out of barbwire.

      Delete
    10. @ JSR - I don't think you need to size up for the sweater skirt if you are on the small/thin side. I unfortunately have the belly flaps and child bearing hips, so a sweater skirt, while stretchy, will still hug the "curves" and shows the bumps, it isn't tight by any means, it just kinda wrap around the curves of your body. Not to mention a bright color even highlights everything more...that being said, I still wouldn't size up. Personally, I like the tube look to offset with an oversize sweater on top. But yeah this skirt is tricky, some reviews say to size up, most of them says TTS. For me it is TTS. Hope this still helps!

    11. @Melodie I went with a 14 in the factory wool trousers. They are waiting for me at home so I'll report back when I try them on. I have mostly found Factory pants to run on the small side. I'm the same - 12 in all A-line/full skirts, 12/14 in pencil skirts depends on the year/fabric) and mostly 14 in wool Crew pants in the ones that fit me, 12 in the previous year's pants.

    12. The factory wool flannel wide leg trousers (17423) are a win for me. I'm not sure I'd classify them as wide leg so much as a regular trouser leg. The maroon is a beautiful burgundy/wine color, almost on the brown side of red. They are a solid maroon, not very heathered in my opinion which I was very happy about. I'm 5'7" and they'll probably be best with 3" heels, I tried them on with slightly taller heels and felt they were a tad short. The larger of my two pant sizes is a perfect fit. They're very soft - a mix of wool (40%), poly (29%), viscose (28%) and elastane (3%). They don't really feel stretchy at all and I dare say they probably run a tad small in the waist as they just fit me at the size 14 and usually size 14 pants gape in the waist since I usually need the 14 for my hips and not my waist. For $27, they're a win for me. They sit right at the waist, aren't too high.

I also received the factory boot cut jeans in preston wash. They were out of a lot of sizes - I'm usually a 32R in J.Crew's jeans and tried a 33 in these. They still look good but are definitely big in the waist - they're incredibly soft too and perfect with heels. The wash is a nice darker wash but I really hesitate about the weird whiskering they love to do on factory jeans. They are also 12% polyester so I'm not sure if they're a keeper but they do look really nice on and I think if I washed and dried them they'd probably fit perfectly. We'll see. It's so nice to wear full length non skinny jeans for a change!

I posted a picture of both pants on my Instagram page @fablifeforever

  6. Picked up the J.Crew Merino wool turtleneck and Fair Isle sweater. I've been looking for a great lightweight turtleneck like this that I could wear under a sports coat without the chunk, James Bond style, haha. Can't wait to wear it full outfit, but its soft to touch, with a trim fit, and feels great. Def recommend.

  8. Ok more reviews (read above posts from me on other items):

    6) Wool turtleneck sweater with ribbed trim (E4398) – Got these in Azalea and Lemon Zest in size L. These are also in merino wool I think. I’m comparing these to the regular merino turtleneck, these are definitely more fitted, but not tight (very stretchy). They do hug the body, more so then the regular merino turtleneck, but not enough for me to size up. These are a good buy on promo, a little more design then the classic turtlenecks that JCREW offers every season. If you need just some basic turtlenecks to wear under blazers or coats, this is a wonderful option, it is not bulky, and it doesn’t pill.

    7) Relaxed Wool Turtleneck Sweater with ribbed trim (E2369) – Following the success of E4398 I tried these “relaxed” version, just to realize it has my dreaded drop shoulder. I have yet to find any drop shoulder design tops that is flattering for my frame (size 14+). It makes me look like a linebacker without even trying. Instantly adds extra pounds, so no thanks. Also, thought relaxed means oversized but they really aren’t. Most reviewers online said to size down, but I find that I needed the XL in these to get the “relaxed” look. My normal L is too short and boxy, while it isn’t tight or hugs the body, it wouldn’t be the right look if I were going to get these. So I think for those of you who are taller or on the bigger end like me and want to try this turtleneck, best to stick with your true size (don’t size down).

    8) Collection A-line Midi Skirt (E3178) – Ah, the one we all saw from the runway shoots and fell in love with that gorgeous peach color with the fancy bow. To my surprise these came in size 14 and 16! Of course I have to order. Finding larger sizes on JCREW is like finding unicorn sometimes but I digress. I surely didn’t read the description closely before I order but these are actually a silk/wool blend, feels a bit more like heavy silk then wool with no stretch. I tried the size 14 and it felt tight around the waist (read above post on preston pants re: highwaist – not a good look for pear shape), also, I messed around with the tie for a long time and still unable to recreate the bow that JCREW did. In the end I just feel like I would be fussing a lot with the bow all day if I were to wear this, it also limited the choices of tops I can wear with this skirt (must be tucked in or short/cropped so that you don’t end up covering the bow – which is the design that makes the skirt). The color is everything you’d imagine and will love. Not quite pink, not quite nude, not quite tan….but it is somehow just the RIGHT SHADE of peach. The slit is at acceptable height, it won’t show your goodies to the world if you decide to sit down. If you don’t have mom belly like me these will be TTS, otherwise size up. In the end I returned this skirt, even though I love the idea, I feel that the skirt is a bit too dressy, maybe it’s the style, maybe it’s the slight sheen of the material. I wish they make a regular pencil skirt in this color in a different fabric. Then I will be all over it.

  11. OT but for those JCAs who are still Jenna fans, she wrote a piece in Lena Dunham's newsletter, The Lenny Letter?, about how a skirt that she made for herself changed her life.

As much as I do grouse about her, I am still a fan.

    1. I can't find the link on Lenny either and don't see it in a couple of articles that are mentioning it online. I do know the skirt narrative has been told for a number of years in many an interview, e.g. This one from Sep 2011 on The Grindstone. I haven't read what she wrote for the Lenny site, but I do hold the sentiment that J Crew PR is very carefully crafted. Bring us some new stories!

    2. ...and in Bobbi Brown's Beauty Rules pub 2010 view here), the narrative is that a girl complimented her on the skirt at school. Both probably happened (boy compliment, girl compliment), but just pointing out the recycling. J Crew has a captive audience and doesn't give it the respect it deserves, imo.

  12. I have a review of the Collection women's Ludlow blazer in plaid (b1218).

    First, the good news:
This jacket is absolutely amazing, as one would expect for a collection piece made from an Italian wool flannel. I have visited the Vitale Barberis Canonico Mill's website and boy, is it impressive! The woven fabric has that peach fuzz finish and soft hand that makes you want to touch it over and over again. I had expected to love the light blue and soft orange threads running through the weave IRL, and they did not disappoint - the colors are subtle and work in perfect harmony with the darker and lighter shades of brown. The craftsmanship is superb, as is the fit. There are two breast pockets, one on each side. Not that I'm planning to carry anything inside them as it would only add unnecessary bulk in that area, but if you like to wear menswear-inspired clothes as much as I do it is just so much fun to know they are there. This blazer is long and lean, so it is very different from the schoolboy, for example. However, that's the look I was going for and even at 5'3" I don't feel it's too long for me. I absolutely love this blazer, and since it's such a timeless piece I was willing to pay retail for it - something I don't do very often.

Now for the bad news, or rather a woeful vent about the treatment this beautiful garment received when it was packed for shipping at the warehouse. It shipped together with three pairs of jeans I had ordered at the same time as the blazer. First of all, the jacket, still on its hanger, was haphazardly folded in thirds (!!) and placed in a plastic bag in order to make it fit inside a smaller box. The jeans were thrown on top of it. There was no care to stuff the sleeves with tissues like my much-less-expensive schoolboys had been in the past. There was no attempt to place the jacket in the box in a way that would prevent it from moving around. And, lastly - and most surprisingly - there was no garment bag included with the jacket! WHAAAAT??

I am embarrassed for J. Crew that they put so much care into producing a top-notch garment such as this lovely blazer and then it was treated like some bottom-price clearance dreck. It speaks volumes about the superior quality of the fabric made at that ancient Italian mill that when I pulled the jacket out of the plastic bag it sprung back into shape without any horrible wrinkles or awkward folds left on it. Still, this purchase left me with a bitter taste in my mouth and a huge disappointment that promises to linger for some time.

  14. Madewell Softplaid Scarf (#e5200). I thought I'd post after washing it. It's 100% acrylic and dry clean. I ended up washing it on delicate/handwash cycle in an (older) front loader machine. It came out soggy so I put it through an additional rinse/spin cycle. Then I laid it flat to dry. It seems fine. The fringe looks good. I might put it in the dryer for 5-10 minutes on low to soften it up more, but it's still pretty soft as-is. So, I didn't ruin the scarf by washing it, yay!

  15. I'm crushed to see up thread that the Campbell pants are scratchy :(. I've been excitedly waiting for them but I'm extremely sensitive, can't even wear merino sweaters, so these don't sound good. Why oh why do they just refuse to line pants? They still line dresses, mostly. I know--it's cheaper. But it's infuriating.

  16. Got the Collection Preston Donegal Wool Pant (e6605) today, ordered my typical size 8 and they fit well, maybe a tiny bit of a gap in the back waistband, but not to the extent that I have with the Campbell Trouser (and which I also had with the Campbell ankle-length pant, both in the bi-stretch wool). Given the price point on the Donegal Wool pant, I may order a size 6 for comparison just to confirm for sure, but I suspect the 8 is already the right fit.

Basically, they are like the Hutton pant, very high rise (over the belly button), but with not quite as wide a leg (but still a straight leg, not a boot cut or flare or anything like that). Fully lined, and the color is not as bright pink as it is on my monitor--slightly more of a maroon/burgundy quality. The donegal fabric is a weave of two pink tones, one a darker, almost mauvish pink and one a variegated lighter pink with a red or bolder pink thread through the center. The color on my monitor makes it look like a bright pink interwoven with white, but that definitely isn't the case in the pair I received.

I don't love the blend of the fabric content--50% wool, 40% polyester, 6% silk, 3% other fibers, 1% elastane (with lining at 100% polyester)--but they look fantastic on (I love pants with this kind of high rise), and if the poly component in the donegal fabric means the pants start to pill or look used/sloppy within a few times of wearing them, I will make a point to complain loudly and repeatedly, given that I paid the astronomical full price for these.

  17. I just received the Sloan Glitter D'orsay flats with mini bow--They are very cute but the glitter fabric is pretty "disco ball". I couldn't tell from the image on the website if they were really sparkly or more of a matte glitter. I was hoping they'd be more subdued.

Another issue: when they arrived and I unpacked them both bows came out of the box a little dog eared---they were clearly kind of mangled during shipping. Not sure why---they were nicely packed and the box wasn't beat up or anything. A total bummer though. I am currently using a binder clip to see if I can flatten them both back to how they should look.

I think also they may run a bit big. I ordered my usual size 9 and when I walk they seem to slip off my heels once and a while. But they are so pointy, the 8.5 may not work either.

OTHERWISE (!), they are very cute...I wonder if they'll come in other colors/fabrics? The blue snakeskin is a bit unpractical for me both in price and color. Black and tweed fabric would be perfect!

  18. Finally received my Point Sur shore ditch selvedge jeans in chipman wash. For anyone not following along I tried unsuccessfully to get CS to lift final sale on these since, hello, jeans. I got specific measurements from CS to compare with my favorite pair of Jcew Goldsign jeans from last year. Out of the package, I'm disappointed. I wanted the jeans to fit as shown on the model. The back pockets are much bigger, which is a plus. The negatives: the ankle doesn't taper as shown on the model, it's a straight leg. I followed measurements to have the jeans sit lower on my waist as shown on the model front pic, and they are really stiff so want to ride up, which is unflattering on my long torso. I'm going to try them on a bit as these are definitely the kind of jeans that stretch out since they're 100% cotton (I believe, didn't read the tag). My goal was to find a jean with a fitted boyfriend look, which I think these can have, like a vintage Levi's quality. I could have bought ten pairs of those from the thrift store for the price I paid for these final sale jeans.

Another review: the wool back zip sweater. The wool is super thick, almost as if it was felted. I followed reviews that said it fit true to size, but on me it runs very small. I cannot fit a thin button down shirt underneath, and the length is slightly cropped on me so it needs something below. I would definitely need to size up for this to work. Quality is really nice though.
