J.Crew's Sale Section is Still Bursting

I, along with many of you, thought there would be another promotion from J.Crew today. Instead, J.Crew sent an email this morning about it's Surf Varsity Jacket. Nice jacket, just not what I was expecting. ;)

What was I hoping to see from J.Crew: another additional percent off promo for their Sale merchandise. Why? Because the amount of stuff on sale is crazy right now. J.Crew Sale (click here to shop online) section this morning has 1600+ for Women and 800+ for Men.

Not only is there a huge sale inventory, but items are just lounging around the sale section and not selling out quickly.

I am not sure what plans J.Crew might have for the items (e.g. sending it to the clearance centers), but they may want to offer a deep discount (a la 50% off) or reduce prices some more. It's time to clear out merchandise that will start becoming in-season again (because they have been around that long!) ;)

Were you expecting a promotion from J.Crew today? What do you think the next promotion will be (and when do you think it will come)?

  1. IMO, they need to either slash the prices or get rid of Final Sale. I get that the stuff is 'old' and they don't want to get it back, but who wants to pay almost $100 for something that is un-returnable? FS at other retailers usually means like, <$30. If they don't want to see it again, they've basically got to pay somebody to take it away, be it us or TJMaxx.

  2. I'm sitting with a loaded cart, not pulling the trigger until a decent promo creeps over the horizon.

JC's attitude towards pricing seems more and more
    conflicted.

  3. Wait, did you say TJMaxx? I didn't know they sold J Crew, or I'm there!

    1. Hi Nan - they haven't in many years, but when they did it was crazy (you can probably search this blog for 'TJMaxx' and see all the threads). Shoes for $20, mainly.

    3. I've also seen some J. Crew items at the Factory store in the past.

  4. I was totally hoping for a promo today too! I think we might see one this week. Still bummed I didn't get the Brompton mini-hobo this weekend, as they had it in stock for, oh, about an hour. :)

  5. I refuse to buy anything marked final sale. Even with a percentage off.

I really need my rewards to arrive and for a 20 percent off promo for an entire order to happen. J. Crew really does not entice me post-Christmas. Dying for a new spring rollout with color!!!

  6. I'm guessing there will be a promo for President's Day. I rarely buy final sale online anyway, I prefer to stick to the store where I can try on first. I'm just hoping for a full-price promo when rewards cards arrive!

  7. I agree w/Catherine & AJLinBoston that we'll see a PD promo.

  8. I totally agree with Susan. I am so done this overpriced Final Sale and with the number of items, it says many other people are too. Most of the items were priced much lower during prior promotions when they were relevant for the season. Bring on some lovelies for Spring,

  9. We have a long winter season in the Pacific Northwest and I will happily buy winter clothes in February, especially for a good deal, but final sale is too much. I don't want to throw away money on something that doesn't work out for me.

  10. I am guessing they will have another sale again soon to move the inventory.

Review of the Surf Varsity Jacket here.

  11. Any thoughts on the collection icon trench versus the factory version? I just got a huge promotion at work (whee!!!) and I'm dying to buy myself a little congratulations gift. I'm happy to wait for a promo on the icon trench if it's that much better than the factory version.

  14. Just got a phone message from my local J Crew Factory store....weird, as it is an hour away & the regular J Crew is 5 mins. Rewards cards should be arriving in the next couple of days! The message was inviting rewards cards holders into the store to see new arrivals, but didn't mention anything about discounts.

  15. I think the staff who usually run the internet site must be away on holiday...it must be ...no one in their right minds would have 1600 plus items a day languishing in SALE.
Mickey will have some heads when they get back...
In other news check out Elements of Style fashion friday post about Marrissa Web.
    - J Crew fall 2014 New York Fashion week show on Tues. and a small new arrival update on Wed.
I guess this is all we have to look forward to until the promos start to fly again. I am sure something is hitting the fan at headquarters.....

  16. It's not so much the number of items in sale in the morning, but the number of items in sale at the end of the day that is telling. They occasionally have 1600 or so in the morning during a percent off sale promotion, but the number is way down by the end of the day, down by several hundreds easily, sometimes down to the 900s. It's at about 1500 items this afternoon after starting at 1600-some. So they sell them without a promotion, but they sell many more when there is a promotion.

    J. Crew has no problem letting things languish in sale, it's just what they do. Maybe these things will seem like treasures in 3 years when they show up as pop-backs :)

  17. Seems to me that they overprice everything deliberately so that they can then "mark it down." $85 for cut-off jean shorts? Seriously??

  18. i love the Jcrew Chino shorts, but sometimes they come off a little soccer mom-ish on me (I am a mom, but my clothes don't need to scream it), can you do a post on how to style them??

  19. There are some (artsy blurry) pics from FW 2014 on the JC Tumblr page. Looks like cobalts, burgundies, jacquard, ankle-length pants and 'sky-high heels'. Jenna appears to be wearing a huskie in one of the pics. It all looks very Collection, which we've come to expect for NYFW. I can't imagine winter clothes now.

Speaking of Jenna, did anybody else catch her on Girls last night?

    1. I saw J.Crew's NYFW sneak-peeks from their Instagram. Hard to tell from those pics. But there was a piece from Instyle.com where they ask designers what their inspiration is for Fall 14', and they asked Tom Mora. His inspiration: Liza Minnelli in the 1972 musical film 'Cabaret'
"Influenced by the Weimar culture in Berlin, the cabaret scene became the center of the arts, music, and theater."

      also...

      Cabaret performers
"The performers of the cabarets of the '20s and '30s often played with the influence of menswear."

Hmm...Fall season is usually my favorite for J.Crew. So I will reserve judgement till I see it for myself tomorrow.

I saw GIRLS last night...she was good. She was restrained from being 'Jenna'..of course she was in character. She must be friends from someone at HBO, because this is the second time she made an appearance from that network, the first was on Jay-Z's Picasso Baby.

  21. I feel like I am buying less from J. Crew these days so I'm not even looking at their sales items. I picked up a couple of their perfect-fit long-sleeved T-shirts recently, an old standby for me, and I could not get over the terrible quality. This is not a good sign. This happened to Gap right after Mickey left the company, I believe. The quality fell off a cliff and I stopped shopping there. I also feel so many other companies are showing superior quality to J. Crew these days--Zara, Boden, Banana Republic, even Old Navy. I would love to read your take on these things. I just got my new J. Crew catalog and it is definitely not knocking me out, and if they can't even deliver a decent T-shirt they are in trouble.

  22. What in the world? 1700+ items in the sale section. Everything that just came out (and that is only a slight exaggeration) is on sale. If there was a promo I would be losing my mind right now. As it stands, I am sitting here looking at my full, unhappy cart.

J.Crew, help me help you get rid of this stuff. Promo please…..

  23. I just filled my shopping cart...waiting for the sale but it's got to be 40% or more...

  24. My guess is there will be a promo next week and into President's Day weekend after NYFW is finished and Mickey gets a look at the inventory numbers that are languishing.

  25. Well, I just got an email about a private sale. Unfortunately, it is limited to Ludlow items.

  26. Hello JCAs! As Mel mentioned earlier, there are a ton of new promo-priced items today, and most of them are the new arrivals that just came out recently. Hopefully we'll see another extra % off sale again soon, too. :)

Just a reminder to those who get the educator or student discount, you receive 15% off the promo-priced items, including today's newest additions.

For those interested in checking out the newly added Promo-Priced items, I've listed them in this post.

  27. OT: I just found out that my links for the promo-priced items had not been working today, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone. (I am in the process of moving and didn't have time to double-check them today.) I have now fixed the links, so if you're interested in seeing the list of new promo items click HERE. :)
