Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  3. I am really interested to hear other's thoughts about the Joe Fresh products at JC Penney. I ordered 6 items from them which were delivered this week. I'm sad to say that all but one of them will be going back. I am always happy with the products that I purchase at the actual Joe Fresh store. I am wondering if it has less to do with JC Penney itself and more to do with the fact that when purchasing from a lower quality, budget-priced retailer it is more important to be able to try on items before you purchase. I found that I had a lot of fit issues - the same thing that often happens at H & M, F21 (and now) Joe Fresh. I will definitely check out the Joe Fresh departments when they open in actual J.C. Penney stores (I'm happy to save a trip across the border to Canada) however I don't think I will be ordering online from them anymore.

    1. Alison, which items did you order? I ordered two pairs of pants, which I haven't yet received. I am regretting it though because I just have a feeling they won't work.

    2. Hi J.CrewJD,

I ordered the Crochet Dress in both colors -it is terribly short. Totally inappropriate for anyone on the taller side. I also ordered the Lace Front Dress which was way too boxy. I also added the silk short sleeved top in the light blue color, the slim fit sateen pants in the blue pattern and the crochet shorts.

The only thing I am keeping is the slim fit sateen pants, although the inside of the fabric doesn't feel very nice. I have a transferable lining for pants (basically a slip, but made for slacks) that I am going to put on when I wear them that should make them comfortable. It has worked with my itchy wool pants so I'm assuming it will work with this scratchy cotton.

I have not received the crochet short yet, it was waitlisted. However, based on the material in the crochet dress I don't think I'll be keeping that either.

Such a shame! I am nearly always happy with products I buy at the actual Joe Fresh stores. I am trying to figure out whether this is a special line made just for JCP or if it is the traditional Joe Fresh product.

    3. Alison, thank you so much for the reviews. I ordered the slim fit sateen pants as well - but I completely guessed on sizing because there was no size chart for JF. Not sure if they've added one yet. It is a shame that the items you ordered were a bust. But yeah, at least soon we can just go to JCP to try the items on!

    4. I'm always happy to pass along reviews! I ordered my J Crew size in the slim fit sateen pants and they fit perfectly. HTH!

    5. My JF reviews:
Stripe pocket dress - this is a cute, casual dress. Thin cotton but stretchy - doesn't show every lump and bump. The waist wasn't too high like some JC dresses and the length was decent - I'm about 5'5" and it hit maybe an inch above my knee. Looks cute with a cardigan or a denim jacket. I liked JC's derby striped dress last summer but the straps and zipper weren't working for me. This is a nice alternative. Fit TTS - I wear 4 in JC dresses and got a S and it was comfy. Some may be able to get away with sizing down, but then the length may be shorter.

Gingham shirt - Great alternative to the JC gingham shirts (and $19!). Thin but not see-through. The chest pocket was a little on the small side but it didn't bother me. Fit TTS - I take a 4/6 in JC button-downs and got the S.

Sleeveless lace top - the dud of the order, unfortunately. I liked the lace and the color of the lace panel. I liked the shape, but not the neckline - it came up too high for my liking, and if it were more of a bateau neck I would probably have kept it. You can't tell from the online pic, but the green lace is a different color from the green poly trim and back - the lace panel is more of a kelly green and the poly is a mossier green. Didn't match. But I liked the shape and if the neckline were different, I would've overlooked the color and wore it with a cardigan or jacket. Fit TTS - I got a S.

  4. My Joe Fresh items arrived yesterday. Everything is going back except the gingham button up shirt. The lace front shells I ordered are very nice cotton lace in front but lined in polyester. Also, the entire back of the top is polyester fabric and it's very sheer. The printed sweater is a strange cut, very large through the body. Not good. The two lace front tees I ordered are nice but I preferred the ivory color and that one is defective. I'm disappointed because everything looked so cute online. I'll wait to see the Joe Fresh rollout in JCP stores on March 15th. No more online ordering from them for me.

  9. Boden dropped their summer line on Monday. :) I wrote a small post on it here.

Unfortunately or fortunately, Boden decided to move quite a few spring items to clearance, which they never do this early (they usually wait until July). It all depends on how you look at it, but there are definite pros and cons to moving them so early. I wrote more about it in this week's Boden Weekly Review roundup. 1. Hi Dina - is Boden no longer doing free returns? I feel like I haven't seen a code for free ship/free returns in a very long time, just free ship.

    2. Hey! I actually think they may have dropped it. A lot of my readers have been discussing that with me through the comments and we all kind of think they have taken it away. It's a shame, really, since so many of us really rely on the free returns to make the wait and hassle of ordering from Boden just a bit easier. Plus, how many times have we received an item from them that is beyond wrong for us? Those free returns help so much!

My only hope is that this is a sign that more will be coming from the Pennsylvania warehouse, which means at least the wait will be much quicker for the products, even if in the end they don't suit us. :P

I think the more that we mention our displeasure here, at my blog, at their facebook page, e-mailing customer service, etc., the more they may realize taking it away is not the best decision.

I also wonder, though, if the system was getting abused, and their profits were suffering (however slightly) from that.

If I hear that they plan to bring it back, I will make sure to make a mention of it here and at my blog! :)

    3. They didn't totally drop it. If you are a catalog subscriber, they usually give you a special offer of x% off, PLUS free shipping. But you have to enter your "quick order" code from the back of the catalog.

    4. I rec'd an e-mail from Boden with 11% off and free shipping/returns with code X9E5. I dunno if it will work for everyone, I had to click through the e-mail to get it. Worth a shot though!

  10. Tried a dress and a few sweaters on at Gap:

Graphic Print Split-Neck Dress(#351536): Great shift dress in a pique cotton canvas material. It has a mod flavor to it as skirt of dress A-lines out slightly. Pink of pattern is a lot brighter in person than what is shown on-line though I would not describe it has hot pink. I tried on a size 0R and found it to be just right with maybe a centimeter of give, but the skirt hits mid-thigh on me even though I'm petite and I don't have particularly long legs. I would suggest going up one-size and ordering in Tall if you are uncomfortable wearing short dresses or plan to wear it to work.

Striped button-shoulder sweater (#351149): Pink stripe on this sweater is a neon pink and should not scare off too many JCAs. In-store there is a tag attached indicating care to be taken when washing to account for neon color (along similar lines JCrew discloses on its merino sweaters that are in brighter colors). Fit is loose, more slouchy sweatshirt style than slim sweater. I suggest sizing down unless you like the falling of one shoulder look.

Heart Print and Butterfly Print Luxlight Sweaters: Doesn't look like either are available on-line, but they are in-store, though hidden amongst the various colored, plain Luxlight sweaters. I tried this on to humor my sister more than anything else and can't say whether these would appease those who like cutesy prints. Its red hearts on navy background; hearts are 2-3" in size, though do be careful as the one I tried on had a heart that landed right over one of my breasts with a 'here I am!' feel to it. The other sweater is a neon pink background with a single, large gray butterfly on the front and made me look like a little kid.

  11. Garnet Hill is the latest J.Crew-wannabe offender. They used to mostly sell bed linens but now their catalogs are including a lot of little content bits like "style tips" (a la JC). Also, they are jumping on the nautical bandwagon a bit late but their striped and anchor looks are very reminiscent of JC: http://www.garnethill.com/womens-fashion/looks-to-love/

  12. For anyone who has been admiring the Bubble Necklace but is loathe to pay $174 (!!!) for a plastic necklace and/or wary of shady eBay sellers, Zulily is currently showcasing knock-offs for under $20. I picked up the last one in yellow and am currently feeling very smart for "saving" $150-ish (after tax and shipping!) on a look-alike.
