Weekly Share: Other JCrew-like Retailers

This is the weekly "Other JCrew-like Retailers" post (similar to the "Off On A Tangent" posts), where we can share our finds from other retailers that have offerings similar to J.Crew (like Anthropologie, LE Canvas, Gap, BR, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and the like.)

If you have recently encountered items that are similar to J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Please feel free to share your story on almost any topic— including experiences with certain merchandise pieces, promotions/ offers, in-store visits, transactions with store associates, etc.

  1. I love this post. Before reading through the comments here, I used to think that Talbots was a store where my mother/grandmother would shop...

  2. Some J.Crew-like items in this post. :)

Btw, I have listed the majority of the promo-priced items that aren't final sale but do receive the extra 30% off at J.Crew in this post.

  3. D*ska, last month Talbots looked again like a ma/grandma store. Hope they are picking up this spring.

  4. I just got a new Talbots catalog. Got so excited about so many things like a used to with a J.Crew catalog. Now I look at a JCrew one and struggle to find anything. So many marked pages in the new Talbots catalog and I won a gift certifcate a while back and still have $90 on it:)

I just got the ombre crystal scarf from them in two colors. My daughter thinks they are gorgeous and so do I.

The only complaint I have about their new line is they used to have goregeous SILK scarves. I have stocked up over the last two years and glad I did. The new ones are polyester....I don't mind paying $10 for one but not $59

  5. PRES2012 Will get you free shipping from Avon with at least a $10 order. Today only. I do not sell Avon but I order A LOT from them so I know about their products if you have any questions.

  6. I'm with you (original) Genny! Looking thru the new Talbots catalog, I dog-eared at least every other page with something I wanted. I think they really stepped it up for spring. J Crew---not so much.

  7. Gap has some super soft stripe bateau-neck l/s tees in pretty colors right now, and some cotton wrap dresses in cool prints. Great fits and prices for both. The wrap dresses are done in a soft, heavy cotton, and the shape is reminiscent of a DVF wrap dress, except the top has enough fabric to keep the wearer covered over the bust area. Am wearing one to work today with Navy Schoolboy and navy tights/pumps.

  8. I, too, enjoyed looking through the new Talbots catalog. Is it just me though, or does everything look a lot better in the catalog than on the website?

Also, last time I ordered from Talbots, there were a few things I was sized out of...and I'm a 2-4 in J. Crew...holy vanity sizing!

  9. I would agree that Talbots does a much better job of styling their catalogues - the online and in store items not so much. I go into my Talbots B&M regularily to try stuff on, love that I can look at the petite sizes there. I have found I need to try alot on and not go by how the clothing looks on the hanger. Probably if I hadn't looked at the catalogue first, I would be less interesting in trying on.

  10. I received the Madewell dotted song bird dress today, I love it but sized up to a 2 because it said to online and it is to large. Sending back for the size 0

I also got the black and white polka dot leather sidewalk skimmer, they are super cute

  11. I am looking to find a Grey or blue chambray popover shirt. Notice any delightful ones in the non JC world?

  12. @Cate -- I agree about Talbots doing vanity sizing.

I wear a 4p in J Crew coats, and I just bought a 2p Talbots coat in final sale without trying it on. It's quite big, but I'll keep it since it's final sale and there's plenty of room for layering. The body is too big to get the nice tailored look I saw on the Talbots models, and the sleeves are slightly too long.

I also have a problem with arm holes on Talbots items. I think they are cut too big, or too low.

  13. Any opinions here on the L.L. Bean Signature collection? I'm tempted to try a couple of their pencil skirts.
It sounds from the reviews like some of the skirts run bigger than the size chart.
