JCA "Help Style Me!" Weekly Post

Preface: A big "thanks!" to Elaine (in this post) & Himmiefan (in this post) who both suggested a weekly "Help Style Me!" post about getting outfit advice from the JCA community. I think it is a fantastic idea. Hopefully this will help out our fellow JCAs with those hard-to-work-with J.Crew items! :)

This is the weekly "Help Style Me!" post, where we can share items we are having trouble putting outfits together with. Elaine says it best, "You know, that thing you bought because you love it and you keep pulling it out and then putting it away without wearing it?"

Please share your J.Crew item (either that you own or are thinking about getting) that you would love help creating an outfit with.

Also, please help out by offering your styling advice. Feel free to include links to your blog (where you incorporated that piece) or to Polyvore (where you showcased an outfit with that piece). Thanks in advance! :)

  3. It's not really a "style me" question, but I'm trying to decide between a couple of metallic cardigans and haven't seen either IRL. Hoping that a JCA may have and be able to offer some insight.

They are the Gold Rush Cardigan and the Oralie cardigan in Stone. I can see some of the differences (eg the Oralie is a bulkier knit, and the colours are slightly different) but I'm wondering about the itch factor, fit, quality, etc.

If anyone can add their 2 cents, I'd be grateful!

  4. OK. Campo de Fiore dress. I have it. I love it. How to style? I put it on this morning with black tights and riding boots but it's so sheer you could see the top of my tights right through it and it looked weird. Any suggestions?

  5. Similar question to Amy... I have the Cashmere Bairritz dress in yellow which is somewhat sheer. I have no idea what to wear with it!

  6. Amy and J.CrewJD: How about trying a slip under the dresses? If sheerness is the only problem, then a slip will take care of it.

  8. Yep, I think a slip is the only answer. Or maybe one of those nude-colored body-sucker-inner ones?

I don't think I realized that dress was sheer ... I'm glad you got your mitts on it though, Amy! I know you were on a quest for some time. :)

  9. FFM, thanks for the idea!

I don't own a slip and could use some help finding one. If any JCAs can suggest any brands/styles, I'd greatly appreciate it. When I hear slip I think of the granny ones with lots of lace and that is NOT what I want. It would show through!

  10. Hi JCrewJD - I think that JC actually had one (item 29516) that could be used as a slip. I can't imagine wearing it out... but I think it was styled originally with those cracked leather boots.

  11. Thanks, silver_lining! That is perfect. Hope it will pop back in a small. I cant imagine wearing that by itself... yikes!

  12. Lainey, I got it last year when you sent me the link to an auction on eBay! Thanks a bunch! And now the slip shopping begins. I'm thinking Spanx.

  13. J.CrewJD: You're welcome. :) If you need a slip right away, you can find them at Target, Kohl's, Walmart, Vintage stores, and usually Marshall's or TJMaxx, as well.

  15. The silk slip dress that J. Crew offered had a matt finish and was not very "slippery". I tried it under my Dream Silvie dress and it clung to the dress and the tights. It also ran at least one size large.

FFM has good advice on stores for a slip, they are much simpler than in the past!

  16. I found a Spanx-esque slip today at Marshalls.... the only real Spanx ones they had were half slips which just seemed like they would ride up horribly. There is a Calvin Klein outlet near me, I might check there too because I am not sold on the tight one. Thanks for the tip WFF.

I want to wear a cashmere dress to be comfy... a spandex undergarment might defeat the purpose :)

  17. Does anyone have the purple lexington jacket, or really any purple jacket (I think the eden from last year came in a plum color)? I have no clue what to wear with my lexington. It is already kind of bold and I don't know what to pair with it besides black which is really boring.

  18. J.CrewJD- plum would look good with jeans, other blues, khakis, gray, and cream. really as long as the color was neutral it will definitely look good. but depending on the shade (which i have not seen in person) purple can look good with mustard, and pink, some orange (this one is tricky though).

  19. J.CrewJD, dina posted a pic a while back of an outfit inspired by a JC catalog shot from 2007 I think, one featuring the purple bella. it was so pretty! i believe it involved a printed perfect shirt layered under a lightweight citron-colored v-neck sweater.

I like to wear lime or avocado green with my purples, or sometimes coral. I can't have most yellows near my face, so that doesn't usually work out.

  20. I got the double serge pencil skirt in nordic blue a while ago, but just not sure how to wear it. It's a lovely blue - like heathered robin's egg blue - but just not sure what to wear with it besides the obvious (white shirt or other neutral such as light grey or black). I'd be grateful for any suggestions!
