Favorite J.Crew Covers of 2010 {& more!}

Over at J.Crew's Facebook page (click here), there is a poll asking customers which cover from 2010 is the best. I thought this is a great question to ask our own JCA Community.

While we are reminiscing about last year, it got me thinking about what our favorite items from 2010 are. Also, what items from 2010 we regret not getting while we had a chance.

For me, the Vintage Bateau Top (Item 24484; $42.50) makes the top of my list for favorite items. I definitely got my fair use of this versatile top. It's classic design will be a go-to for years to come. The second item I love is my pair of Vintage Slim jeans from J.Crew. This year, J.Crew's denim won me back. The Vintage Slim cut is just perfect with its slim fit (not skinny-matchstick-tight which looks great on others, just not on me).

Which cover from 2010 is your favorite? What item(s) are your favorite from 2010? What item(s) did you miss out (& wished you got) from 2010?

Quick Poll: What is your favorite catalog cover of 2010?

  1. Why don't they open it up to the other years? 2010 sucked, it was a 12 way tie.

  2. OK- jumping on this band wagon here.

This is my all time favorite of 2010. It's machine washable, versatile and not very expensive. Looks great with all colors, and mixes great with other prints.

  3. For 2010 my favorite catalog was September - it grew on me.

For 2010 items, I loved the Oxford heels, the Bandalier high heel boots, the MacAlister wedges, the Waverly chinos, the Super 120s suiting pants, Heather Nickel cashmere and the white Thomas Mason Boy shirt. There are other items I bought and loved but the items above are the ones I really wore.

  4. I liked June the best for 2010 catalog covers.

I really didn't buy anything at J.Crew the first half of the year. Favorite items this year were the suckered gingham shirts from the summer (perfect fit shirts in petite sizes work great for me and this material was perfect for humid summer weather), walker riding boots (long zipper is great for getting cuffed skinnies tucked in), moss tweed mini, garrison satchel, and XS buffalo check flannel from the men's section. So glad the men's section added XS sizes.

Things I missed out on were actually a couple of men's ties: the glen plaid bow tie and fair isle knit tie.

  5. I'm with Betsy, the suckered gingham perfect shirts are great (so great I got them in 4 colours). I also really loved the Orchid Shadow colour, have the Frances cami, Merino Open cardi and a Jackie twinset in that colour.

  6. My favorite items this year were the Ripstop field jacket in camp green, the cotton check shirt and the toothpick selvedge jeans. I have worn these items the most, I just love them!... Sadly I missed out on the marled black long cardigan and the lolli pants :(

  7. My JC favorites from 2010 include the draped glass necklace, toothpick ankle jean and striped bateau tee. I love many of the pieces I have, but those are the ones I've worn over 10x/each.

The kick #ss colors were nightfall blue, heirloom pink, dark rosewood, and then the Cambridge shawl cardi in flame orange. Cerise was a surprise one I liked as well. Pardon the language but JC nails unique & beautiful colors.

  8. Addtl $.02 about the catalogs. I'm sure I saved mine from 2010, but I drew no styling inspiration from any of them. I looked at each catalog once and that was about it. In 2008 and even 09 I would look at them once or twice/week. Sometimes looking at them like a story before bedtime. Those were the days.

  9. My 2010 fav item is the Marled Thandie Blazer. Interesting texture, slimming silhouette, substantial fabric... perfect for business and casual attires for 3 seasons.

Don't have a fav 2010 catalog cover -- but the worst one for me is April, where the model looks stoned and clueless with her mouth hanging open throughout the catalog.

  10. I am in both the suckered gingham shirt and vintage bateau tee camps. Special mention to the Dauphine jacket, metallic beach cardigan, embroided ikat pencil skirt and Lisette cami.
Pansy, funny I loved the April catalog the best this year in terms of styling, followed by the holiday one.

  11. I am sad the lolli pants went so quickly!

One of the SAs told me she thinks they are really starting to limit inventory this year which makes sense since we've noticed even basics selling out or being WL quickly!

  12. I don't know if I would love any of these as much had I bought them at FP, but here's my 2010 guilt- free fave list:

    • Arrow sweaters, black & olive green. One or both travelled all over with me this fall and are (is?) great under down coat on really cold days. Love them w jeans & pants, not so much w skirts, but who cares!

    • Timber tweed skirt. Mmmmm.

    • a cashmere hood in a funky off-pink color that is just amazing on, looked blah on site, happy I bit.

  13. For those of you lamenting missing out on the "lolli pant" my local B&M, Tice's Corner in Woodcliff Lake NJ (201-391-4123) had at least three pair on the clearance rack. Not sure of the sizes or the price but everything in that section was hugely discounted with an additional 40%off.

  14. Here are some of my 2010 faves:
*Vintage bateau tee, esp. in camel. I wear that one more than the pewter color.

*Arrow sweaters, again esp. in the camel color. Beautiful!

    *Tartan perfect shirt

*Tweed skirts. I only had one tweed skirt prior to 2010, but my collection grew by 3 this year. I especially love the timber tweed and the moss tweed skirts.

    *Suckered gingham perfect shirt

*Double serge pencil skirts--I got the nightfall blue and bronzed ochre. Love both.

    *Donegal tweed schoolboy blazer

*Fave cardigan buy..the merino zip cardigan. I believe it was retail-only. Looks similar to the Montreaux but it is 100% merino. I love the gold color!

Shew...looks like I had more favorites than I thought!

  15. My favorites - arrow sweater, striped bateau tee, timber tweed skirt (LOVE most of their pencil skirts) and my vintage slim jeans. Completely agree they are slim, not too slim, and flattering (I struggle with the matchsticks). Silly question for you, Alexis - but do you wear yours rolled as they show - I do in milder temps (and love the look), but struggle with how to wear them when it's colder - I'm never quite sure if they look "right" unrolled?? I'm curious how others wear them. TIA!

  16. Re: favorite covers...I don't think the 5 they had featured were their best by any means. I liked the September cover the best, I think. The colors were nice.

I just got a chance to go through the most recent catalogue and I was extremely pleased to see that the styling was so realistic-looking, at least moreso than the other catalogues. Other than socks with sandals, there was nothing over-the-top or ridiculous. I hope those days are over!

  17. Love reading everyone's comments!

I also agree that covers from previous years have been more enticing. But it's still fun to look back at 2010. :)

Elizabeth in MO: I know what you mean about the Vintage Slim! :) I love rolling them up, but in the cold Winter weather of New England, that is no longer possible. I do wear the pant legs all the way down with ballet flats. It looks super cute. When the weather is rainy/ muddy, I wear them tucked in with boots or as is with a pair of ballet flats from Crocs (I know! Crocs! But they have one design of ballet flats that is great for all weather.) Hope it helps! :)

  18. My favorites from 2010 are the Long Benny blazer and the Island Paisley cotton-silk perfect shirt. Superb players in my ongoing quest for slouchy elegance.

The best catalog cover IMO was December/Holiday. It so perfectly illustrates the JCrew "spirit": Look cute at all times, never mind practicality!

  19. I loved the floral "idea" of the April catalog, but I strongly disliked the model's strung-out appearance.

I cut my JC spending sharply this year--partly general economic issues but mostly that I didn't like the offerings as well as in the past. The real winners for me were the two spring wool floral scarves--watercolor potpourri and waterfloral pastiche. J.Crew's prints are almost always winners for me and these were the perfect touch of color in our rainy, dark spring.

  20. Gigi I am with you, I still refer to 2008/09's catalogues for styling inspiration. There are a few shots from 2010 that I really loved but mostly I could not pull off those looks.

Alexis, I agree the Vintage Bateau top was such a great piece. Mine has also gotten plenty of wear. I also love the Silk Organza Starburst Dress, which I wore on New Year's Eve, and the Fenton Fallon Carrington Collar Necklace.

From the cover choices you have, I think October is my favorite.

  21. Thanks Lovie!!!

I just called then and they dont have anymore :( sad!

If anyone sees a 0 or a 2 i would love to know!

    Thanks!

  22. Double serge perfect pencil skirts, fo shiz. I really hope they stick with the same level of fabric quality next year...

  23. Oh and my fave cover was the one with the upside down legs with the wooly tights and platform sandals (Alexis has a similar photo on the masthead right now). I know I'm not supposed to say this anymore but I thought that was fierce!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I guess my favorite item was the wool double serge pencil skirt. I really bought little else this year. Sad face.

    ReplyDelete
  25. My favorite catalogs were September and October. My favorite item was a collaboration (!): my Aigle chantebelle wellies. I ended up buying very little in 2010 compared to 2008 and 2009; I think I returned about 75% or more of what I bought. I'm just not that into "borrowed from the boys" and military styles; I'm hoping for a return to more ladylike and tailored styles in 2011. I did spring for the eyelash tweed jacket on markdown and am hoping it ends up being a favorite, too.

As xoxo said yesterday, when JC nails something, it's a thing to behold--ITA. I was reminded of this when I went through my jackets from 2008--the various astrids (berry, ruffle, tweed), the Simone, the Penny, and also the blushed tweed collier from 2009--all of these have stood the test of time, and make me feel like a million bucks when I put them on. We'll see what the future holds--it will either be good for my closet, or good for my wallet ;)

  26. No favorite cover...They just don't inspire me like catalogs in years past. Add me to the list of people who cannot stand the "open mouthed" look on models.

Favorite items: tartan perfect shirt, lodge puffer in cobblestone, waxed utility jacket in dark elm, and cashmere popover hoodie in heather plum. It helps I got all of them for a steal too...Favorite colors: cobblestone and dark rosewood.

  27. My fav items bought in 2010 were popbacks from 2009, terra paisley dress, blush tweed skirt and deco skirt. I also love, love, love the short vintage roadsters in black. In the summer I loved the Coralie cami, Bazaar cami, slub cotton pencil in natural, ink blossom skirt and Emmaleigh cotton shift dress.
Like Hexicon, I am wearing JC scarfs all the time, two floral ones and one striped cotton. Also the many striped t-shirts and Haya sequined sweatshirt. Like Gigi, there many other items I bought and liked but all the ones above I actually wore multiple times.
I liked the April cover, sans vapid expression but I was really into the flower on flower look at that time and I bought and loved both the jacket and shirt she is wearing. With all the complains about JC when I look back I still bought and liked plenty of itmes :)

  28. I adored the September cover. I know I am in the minority, but the lushness of the colors and the makeup on the model had me swooning!

I created a set of my top ten from 2010 (well, it was eleven, but my AR Trapp troubadour sunglasses needed to be in a class by themselves I have worn them that much)...

Love seeing what others have chosen!

  29. Alexis - Thanks so much for your input on the vintage slims! I did just wear mine yesterday full length with the cece metallic ballet flats - I liked it but like them better rolled. Well - I may have to check out the crocs ballet! THANKS!

  30. No fave covers from me. I'm too old-school, I think!

As far as fave items, another vote for the bateau tee (esp Camel) and the suckered gingham shirts (perfect and non-perfect :). Also, 2010 was the year of the Toothpick jean for me, and my fave lil' workhorse -- the tissue Victoria cami -- was definitely one of my fave purchases. Got a LOT of wear our of my pencil skirts, of course -- special shoutout to my Impressionist floral one, which always cheers me up every time I wear it!

  31. Yeah, the catalogs were a letdown for me as well this year compared to previous years.

My faves from this year: The tall Miller high heeled boots and the Sutton tall boots. Love them both! My Gray McAllister wedge shoes, the nude Alecia sandals, the Langford heels. Are you seeing a pattern here? I still think JC does excellent shoes. And I love that they do Extended Calf. I like to tuck my pants into my boots and this makes it doable w/o looking bunchy on me. Other faves: Coralie Cami, Arrow Sweater, Marled cardigan, striped Double Serge skirt, Marled Thandie blazer (amazing) Trouper pants, Skimmer pants and my denim ankle zip Winnies that I got at the Crewlet. Those are what have gotten the most use and best looks.

  32. From summer, Liberty floral daze perfect shirt, coralie cami, alecia peeptoes and vintage zebra mini.

Fall/winter, cashmere cowlnecks, buffalo plaid jacket, velvet boyfriend blazer, sunnie skirt.

    Also love the tartan shirt.

  33. My favorites were the chiffon tiered tank (although I had to have a tailor bring up the straps and the zipper minnie pants (which I wear to death).

  34. My new favorite cover would have to be the one Elaine posted under yesterday's buyout thread:

  36. My favorite items from 2010 are the double-serge pencil skirts (I have black and carbon), the rimini cardi (nutmeg) and the over-dyed black matchstick denim.

My biggest regret from last year is that I missed out on the nightfall blue double serge skirt. I pine for this color and hope desperately that it comes back in my size!

  37. re: NYT Drexlers wary about 2 new suitors

Ha ha ha! THAT is hilarious!
I wish they'd add one w/Jenna in the rollneck sweater she dislikes so much.

    Thanks for sharing WFF!

    ReplyDelete
  38. All thanks must go to Elaine fpr what is no doubt going to be thebest post of the year (even tho it's only January). Untoppable.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Forget the rollneck, I want to see Jenna's head 'shopped onto some Carhartt (?sp) coveralls -- borrowed from the boys big-time, lol!

Or maybe a pastel acrylic sweater with bunnies on it (we love it for spring!) and some elastic-waist pants (we're obsessed with them.)

So sorry, I could not resist. Hee.

  40. I didn't love any covers this year, so no favorites. My favorite pieces: Vintage Bateau, Arrow Sweater Jacket, Tartan Boy Shirt, Nightfall Blue Double Serge Pencil Skirt, lots 'o summer pencil skirts (Tailored Denim, Impressionist, Sunshine Peony, Watercolor Garden), Crystal Milano/Caryle bracelets, Northern Lights Necklace.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Based on the number of wearings, I'd have to say my fave pieces were the Flannel plaid tuxedo tunic, Trouper pants, Oxford heels and Selvedge shirt (which I think technically is a 2009 item, but I only bought it in 2010). Oh, and the basic leggings -- got two pairs...love them and wear them to death!

    ReplyDelete
  42. If I have to pick one of those catalog covers I would choose the Holiday one since it looks like the model is actually having fun.

What did I love in 2010? Pencil skirts of course! I have every color ever offered in the double-serge wool and cotton as well as most of the tweed, plaid, textured, prints and superfine cotton ones too. I wear a pencil skirt almost every day and I love the way J.Crew does them. My favorite pencil skirts this year have to be the nordic blue double-serge wool, the timber tweed wool, the oak tweed and superfine cotton.

When I'm not wearing a pencil skirt I often reach for J.Crew suiting dresses, which were another favorite of mine in 2010, especially the pinstripe banquette and superfine cotton emmaleigh. These dresses are so flattering and comfortable for those extra-long days that never seem to end.

I really am thankful for my J.Crew wardrobe staples that make it so easy to get professionally dressed in the morning and look good all day long. No, I'm not a trend follower or fashionista but J.Crew gets a good chunk of change from me with their classic pieces.

  43. I picked the December catalog, just because she looks like she's having fun. :) My items of 2010 are the pencil skirts, toothpick ankle jeans (love these!), cashmere henley (bought 2 late last spring for cheap), jackies (added several to my closet this year), and a gray tee with a big, bright yellow flower on it that was never online and I can't remember the name on the receipt. I wore that tee a ton and can't wait to wear it again. :)

  44. Alexis and Elizabeth in Mo re: vintage slim. Did you have them hemmed or you can just wear them unrolled? I am 5'2" and I wear a 26. I would need to have them hemmed to wear them down but I am afraid of doing it out of fear that I won't be able to wear them rolled then. So I wear them rolled all the time which I admit is kind of weird in cokd weather. TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Ema: So sorry for the delayed response! I understand your position. I am 5'8 so I wear the pants unhemmed when they are unrolled. However, I have a pair of skinny jeans from J.Crew that I got on sale. They were "long", which is too long for my needs. I didn't want to get them hemmed, so I end up tucking the excess under the pant leg. (Instead of cuffing- which the excess is rolled on the outside. I do the opposite. I roll the excess inside the pant leg.) Maybe this technique could work for your needs?
