J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

Preface: A big "thanks!" to Cass (in this post) who suggested a "weekly 'Did you try on/receive any JC items this week?' post where we could all "deposit" our reviews for various items". I think it is a brilliant idea. Hopefully this will help out our fellow JCAs! :)

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

  1. Posted reviews of the cardis from my last % off + free ship order: Bling Button, Merino Open, and Ruffled Placket. http://onetoomanyclosets.blogspot.com/2010/08/cardigans-cardigans-cardigans.html

  2. Purchased the Rimini cardigan and reviewed it in this post. The cobblestone color is much darker than it appears online, and I would definitely say order your regular JC cardigan size.. I mistakenly ordered one size up and it was much too large. This really is meant to be a fitted cardi. You can see how big it is on me in the pictures.

  3. New arrivals at my B&M today! I tried on a darling tweed skirt, very colorful with zipper pockets..would've bought it on the spot but it was way too short. I sized up to a 4 (i'm usually a 0 or 2)and even falling at the hips, it was still too short for my liking. I also tried and purchased a black cardi with white piping around the collar, pockets and cuffs..so so cute! I also got a new perfect shirt, it is purple with tiny white dots (finally some color!). I tried on but didn't get the plaid minies. I loved them on me but i'm going to wait until they go on sale (crossing fingers they actually make it to sale!). Also, 3 new colors of the vintage bateau striped shirt: red, navy, and army green stripes.

This is pretty much what caught my eye :)

  4. I stopped in to do returns and check out the new arrivals. Love the Khloe cami in blush stone- matches the bronzed clay featherweight cashmere cardi perfectly. Runs TTS.
The Confetti ruffle cami in ivory is fully lined which I was happy about. I hadn't ordered it online because I thought it looked sheer. It ran large and so I sized down from a 12 to a 10.
They had a new embellished tee that I thought was beautiful but it is $78! I just don't think I can spend that much on a cotton tshirt!

  5. I already posted this under the sale watch thread but for those interested in the Gusto cami it is $20 cheaper in store ($78 instead of $98). I didn't care much for it when it came out online but I loved it when I saw it and tried it in store. BTW, it has an exposed zipper in the back but it is kind of discreet and goes well with the style of the cami. Fits TTS. HTH!

  6. Here are some of my latest reviews:
    Sailor Stripe Always cardi

    Buffalo Check boy shirt

Softspun Sunset dress and again here (btw...ended up settling on the size xs in this dress)

I have a post scheduled for tomorrow morning on the Donegal Tweed Schoolboy blazer in moss green. LOVE this jacket. The tweed is very, very soft and the shape is lovely.

  7. Carmichael Plaid Popover item 29520
Very pretty colors, has hydrangea color running through it. Very soft and comfortable. (Honestly, I tried it on while I still had my pj bottoms on and got the feeling it could double as a pj top.) The fit on model is true to life. It does run smaller in the shoulders than some of the other popovers (size small is 15" wide shoulder to shoulder). The body runs loose but straight, full in the back. This isn't a problem since it's to be tucked in. (The narrow shoulders prevents me from being able to size down.) The Carmichael actually comes very close if not exact in measurements to the Stripe Cotton Popover item 24430, lingering in final sale hell, except the shoulders of the Carmichael are 3/4 of an inch narrower. After figuring out the measurements I was going to take a risk on the Stripe Cotton Popover but it has those big pockets so you can't tuck it in. Ema of My Closet My Baby and I reviewed the Carmichael on her blog: Ema's Carmichael Plaid Popover item 29520 Review

    Drawstring henley shirtdress item 27423
Between a size small and medium I ended up keeping this in a size medium. The medium allows me some length to hike the drawstring waist up to the top of my hips, and the slightly looser fit of the top goes w/the style of the dress. The material is thicker/heavier slub so it hangs nice, and I got the faded black color so as to not risk it being see through. I had to play around w/it a bit; pull the material on the skirt section around on the drawstring so it didn't bunch at the front tie. Then I had to adjust so the pockets hit in the right place or they make you look bigger from a back/side angle. I only tried this because I knew I could return it if it didn't work out otherwise, I wouldn't have risked it. Gigi has a review w/pics on her blog: Gigi's Drawstring henley shirtdress Review

Not even worth a link, the Eyelet Bow Blouse item 27302 is a complete miss for me. I sized down to a size 2 and the angled-under-bust seems want to cut across my boobs. If you notice, the 'bow' is not a true two loop bow, it's half a bow. One piece of fabric is longer than the other so there isn't enough of the shorter tie to make two bows. I almost think staying your regular size or sizing up would work for this top. It looks kind of 'cute' on and may look cute under a cardi but I really wish I wouldn't have got caught up in this top. Also, the Dark Pewter color is way lighter in person. I specifically contacted JCrew and asked if the color was true to life and they said yes. No, it is not. Gigi has this top reviewed on her blog too. (The Fiesta Floral Tunic is so worth more than this top in my opinion. The pricing should be flip flopped.)

O/T: they sure don't pay attn to their product descriptions. The new 'Toothpick cords' are said to be longer than last years, which I'm assuming were the 'Toothpick ankle cords'. Last years toothpick ankle cords had a 28" inseam, and this years cords have a 27" inseam. Longer? They're an inch shorter!

  8. IRL, thanks for the shoutout. Are you going to keep the popover? I agree on the colors, they go with everything and the effect is very nice.
I saw a lot of the new arrivals yesterday at the Collection store but I didn't have my camera and my daughter was WILD so I couldn't try anything on. I saw the tweed mini that Miss Penny Z. was talking about, the tweed had a lot of colors in it with a yellow base but had two UGLY zippers sewn on black tape in the front. They had another tweed (or was that mohair?)mini in a very bright orange that hadn't any zipper. Both retails for $120 which I find a little bit pricey for a mini.
Also saw the schoolboy velvet blazer that looked lovely (the purple color was a very rich purple, different from last year Iris). Must go back and try on!

  9. This is a great idea! I am holding on to a J.Crew gift card and trying to decide what to buy. I'll be posting when I do!

  10. Ema, you are welcome. It is so helpful to have these posts to refer to after a few months go by, and the bloggers who post pic's are the best! I am going to hold on to the Carmichael because I love all the colors in it and alread have some items in my closet to pair with it. (I am hoping I'll catch it at a lower price as I'm not wanting to pay f/p either.)

  11. I have reviews of the Rimini cardigan, the Donegal Tweed blazer and a few other things

    http://generationkvetch.blogspot.com/

I am curvy, size 10/m and I really liked both of these items. I think the Rimini is very flattering for a big bust. I did need to size down on the Donegal to an 8

  12. I finally got my Coddington Suede pumps in dusk red; last week the 6.5 arrived and it was too small. This week, I have the 7, and it is perfect. A gorgeous shoe, very foot-candy!

Just remember to order a half size up!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Just a little note about the Rimini cardi: it comes in a lovely cream color (like a champagne with a hint of buff pink) that appears to be B&M only. Tried it on in the store on Sunday and it is so flattering and different, but I'm waiting for sale :)

One thing to note is that the cream is quite sheer and I had nothing to try on underneath it so you could see straight through to the wrap on the inside. Would probably look best paired with a nude/pale neutral top underneath.

  14. Hi, has anyone tried on the 1035 trouser and how does that compare to the city fit classic trouser? I don't trust the photographs on the website. (The only difference I can see is that the trunk of the leg of the 1035 pants is skinnier.) Thanks!

  15. I'm back with more from an order I received today.

Moss blossom Calista cami: love it! a great transition piece with dark green, dark gray, and white print. It would look great now with white pants and later with dark charcoal/black sweaters, etc. Runs large, sized down one size.

Beaded ruffles crewneck cardigan: love this too! Heavy cotton with detailed ruffles and little seed beads sewn along each row. TTS to a little small fit. The apricot mist color looks great with the Pilar paisley cami.

Gusto cami: This is going back! Maybe it's too big but it looks like a hot mess on me. I think it would look great on thin gals but not on my 10/12 body!

Stripe pocket tee: warm taupe I really wanted this to be great but it's going back too. It's very sheer and the scoop neck is HUGE.

Herringbone workshirt: warm taupe I think I'm going to keep this. It's a good basic for fall and looks great with the wool and cotton plaid scarf in taupe cobblestone (love this scarf!) Sized down for a less boxy look.

Confetti ruffle cami: vintage wisteria Unlike the ivory version that I bought in the store yesterday, this color is not lined. The color is more purple than the pink that the website shows. Not sure if this is a keeper.

    Hope this helps!

  16. Oh my goodness. The new arrivals IMO are amazing! I went to go "pop" in over lunch to get the new vintage bateau top with the army green stripes and I am totally in love!! I bought that shirt (exactly the same as this summer just updated colors.

I also got the skirt on the cover of the catalog (I think). I noticed there is one on the website already sold out (metallic sequin bell skirt) that looks so similar to me but is twice the price?? The skirt I got $128 fits tts and the style # is 30310! I love it dressed up or down!

I also got a shirt that reminds me of the old painters tee but with a lining around the neck if that makes sense? I got it in a purple/ pink color size xs tts. Style 29687! I don't usually wear this color but I actually loved it!!

I saw the ripstop cargos are on sale in store (with the zippers) $49.99 but I decided not to get them.

There is an update to the stardust pencil skirt that was amazing. It's like a maroon/ purpley color beautiful and tts!!!!

Lots of sequins and sparkle in the store! Go check it out! Or don't if you want to keep the money in the bank account :)

  17. tried on the new sweater jacket in stores; can't seem to find it online. comes in two colors, grey/heather and olive/dark green. there was only one left in xs in the grey/heather color. fits TTS. but, for those who'd like to layer under, consider ordering a size up. it's very heavy-duty at 100% merino wool; love the cutting and the thick collar, not to mention the buttoned pockets! length hits me at or slightly below hip (i'm 5'4"). priced at 138. i had a 20% off welcome promo that i used.

also pulled in the navy schoolboy blazer. it's a tad cropped and goes well with my short waist. a season-less color that will be worn again and again.

and, the side-zip sweatshirt in both colors. the dark cloud (lighter grey) color is a very slim fit yet casual look. the heather charcoal is a less casual shade and just as stunning. love the textured material.

received the metropolitan leather ankle boot in cognac after a pop back last week. fits TTS. surprisingly comfortable! goes well with many fall colors. very happy with the item.

tried on the chiffon dot cami and it's absolutely gorgeous! but, even on sale for 69.50, it was still a little too much. very delicate fabric. will wait for deeper cuts.

also, the waxed utility jacket is on sale for 99.99 in store. i returned the olive color last week, as i changed my mind about forking FP. fit a little boxy but very nice material.

the infinity cardigan in paradise blue was on sale for 59.99 in store. love the color; a very nice pop but was wayyyy too long. hit me at mid-thigh.

  19. This review is not a particular item per say, but I am on vacation right now in Maine and visited the Freeport J.crew outlet the other day. I was soo disappointed no real fun fall items I usually see this time of year and no really great sale items either (same old tees). I was going to stock up some tissue v necks and found some in a great bright olive green color, but only to find out there was very limited sizes left in that as well. However, I did walk out with some fun earrings at 40% off which was great. However, overall I was pretty disappointed I didn't get to stock up on some fall items, which I usually always do when I am visiting Maine this time of year. Guess I will have to check out my local B&Ms when I get home.

  20. Eggytarty - Would you mind telling me which store had the waxed utility jacket on sale? I missed out on the Downtown Field jacket in black last year so I think this might be a good substitute. Thanks!

  21. New arrivals in my local "Luxe" store today. The new arrivals are quite nice, although there are still a lot of very short minis-cute but tough to wear. The lovely rich colors for fall and stunning jewelry are tempting. The Bayberry washed wool scarf, #19316 is very soft and the colors look richer IRL. The new sequined pencil skirt #30279T, $138 runs TTS. It is a rich burgundy/brown that isn't as bright as last year's silver stardust, but just as pretty. Stating the obvious, but it is fragile-the one I tried already had pulls. Picked up my HTH item, the Shimmering paillette vest, which runs large. It is a very soft Merino Wool, a little low cut, but perfect with a blouse, cami, or t-shirt. The September catalog is styled somewhat over the top for my taste, but not out of the norm.

  23. Just received the Brompton Purse in the espresso color. I am in LOVE! The color is so rich and gorgeous. Not too big like some recent JC bags, but I could live with it being a tad smaller. Still, this is my new everyday bag and I am very happy with it.

  24. Just went to the store to try on the Donegal Tweed Schoolboy blazer in moss green. Loved it! Can't wait for the weather to cool down to get it. Lovely mix of wool and silk, and the fit is fitted.
My store also had the schoolboy blazer in velvet. They only had the purple which I'm not interested, but I'm sure this could be a good choice for those who missed the Bella velvet jacket.

  25. Speaking of the velvet schoolboy blazers, would love to see some irl pics of them if anyone has them...

  26. I got a couple items in the mail today and also saw the new arrivals (and catalog!) in store. First up:

Calista cami -- I ordered this in the "dark rosewood" color in a 00 after trying the 0 on in store and it was way too big. The 00 is great on me and it's a beautiful color. May take some experimenting/ironing to see how the ruffles look best -- they are lying facing inward if that makes sense, not outward as shown in the photos. Anyway it's great quality, I love the bra strap holders that J.Crew camis have. Looks great with a pencil skirt and cardigan for work.

Bettina cami -- I got the navy on sale, also in a 00 though it fits a little smaller than the Calista. It's pretty, higher neck than I was expecting. The only thing I *didn't* like about this top is that, in the navy, if you wear a lighter colored bra (or bright, I suppose!) it shows through the eyelets.

Felted wool mini -- got this in gray in a 00. It runs very big; I prefer skirts to hit at my natural waist but I have to wear this on the hip. It's honestly not short on me at all (I'm 5'4), hits about mid-thigh. I'm young so I understand this may not be the favorite length of older ladies ;) but I could even wear this to work with tights.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchases! I saw the multi-colored tweed skirt Miss Penny Z mentioned and it is ADORABLE. Other than that, pretty basic stuff in this roll-out it seems.. the vintage stripe tees are back in new colors, lots of wool/tweed mini skirts, a couple puffer vests, a very pretty maybe-Liberty navy/green/purple perfect shirt.. not much that caught my eye TBH.

  29. To follow are a few Madewell reviews:
    Madewell Sweatshirt Sweater item 24821
Ordered in the color Raw Indigo, sizes Small & Medium. Small fits like a normal to tight fit sweater (hardly noticed bulkiness on sides in this size). Shoulder seems hit on upper arm, not on shoulder. Extra upper arm girth? Size up. Tried the Medium, hoping for a slouchy fit. Look at the picture of the model in the side shot & back shot. Look at the photo of the back of the model. See the droopy fabric under the right armpit area? The sweater is cut really wide only in that area, almost like pouches & not in a slouchy kind of good way. In a bad way. Plus it is fitted at the waist so if you size up, the chest area probably only gets wider. Look at the individual color photo's & you can see the bulk of the fabric folding on the front of the sweater. Very pretty color but not a keeper for me at any price.

    Madewell Scholar Cardigan item 26382
Ordered this in Medium and Large because I expected the fit would be smaller since Madewell appears to be aimed for a younger age group. The Medium is slightly larger in the body then I expected but I can live with it. The sleeves are so long I could safely cuff them one time and they will still hit past my wrist (I'm 5'7"). The Heather Blizzard is a keeper for the price and because of the shades of grey in it. Not sure if I'll keep Heather Static or not since I already have enough grey sweaters (thanks JCrew). Gigi has real life pic's on her blog Gigi's Blog Pic's of Madewell Scholar Cardi-Heather Static

Madewell Lake House Shirt item 26756
Ordered in size Small (sold out of Mediums) in colors Parchment and Coral Reef. Size small is too tight in uppper arms and shoulders and was unable to button three-quarter sleeves; the circumference is too short to button (I don't have Popeye forearms). The sleeves came rolled so maybe the buttons and holes are 'decorative'(?). The material is thin and would go nice under a cardi in the fall. The neutral colors of Parchment are pretty and would go w/a variety of items. Would've considered keeping if I could've tried a medium. I did not care for the colors of the Coral Reef.

Madewell Draped Racerback Tank item 25277
Ordered size Small in the color Nightfall. I really like the color alot, the feel of the slub rayon is supersoft, flattering, flowy style. Small fits fine and I'm sure I could size down w/o any problems because of the style. There are other tops in this fabric that are probably worth looking into. Lighter colors are probably see thru.

  30. Irl - thanks for the link love :-)

Chrissy - the softspun cardi is catalog/jcrew.com only, which may explain why there are no blogger links.

Stephanie - I saw the waxed utility jacket on promo for $99. I imagine it's all stores. Even if there is no sign, it should ring up on promo at the register.

It's a sale item, but I just put up the swann ruffled shirtdress, which is down to $29.99.

  31. I ordered and returned the softspun cotton cardi in neon azalea. It's thin and shapeless... just not for me.

  32. Slightly OT but Madewell sent around an email this morning showcasing their "design guru's picks for fall", one of which is the Striped cardigan, easily one of my favorite fall purchases thusfar. This cardi is soooo striking in person and really stretchy and comfortable with a flattering fit. Fits TTS. Seems like it will hold up better than many of my recent J.Crew sweater purchases but that remains to be seen ;)

I have several J.Crew items arriving within the next few days so I will be reporting back.

  33. Stephanie, the Boston Copley store had them on promo for $99 as well. I found it a little boxy when closed but cute! HTH

  34. Eggytarty, Gigi, and Boston Brit: Thanks for the info on the waxed utility jacket. It was still marked FP in my store so if you hadn't told me it was on promo, I would have never gone to the register to check! Great price and I sized down to get rid of some of the boxiness. Thanks!

  35. Got some final sale stuff today, and it was a story of highs and lows.

Tailored denim pencil skirt - this is lovely, love the double side vents in the back, love the stretch. Because of the stretch, though, I probably could have gone down one size or to the petite version of my normal size, but I don't think I had those options anyway.

Watercolor floral pastiche pencil skirt - I like the print on this one even more in person than online, and the fit is TTS. I was surprised by the material - it's cotton but with a linen-y finish. I'll have to get it hemmed up a few inches for sure. It does say 24" in the description, but the photo online is pretty misleading - the model must be 7 feet tall!

Fleurette pencil skirt - love the print but the sizing is definitely off on this one. It is at least a full size smaller than it should be and there is no stretch. I can squeeeeeze into it, but it might have to wait until that proverbial weightloss I've been working on happens.

Super 120s city fit pants - I have several other pairs of these pants, so I know that the pair I received are a petite, and not a regular even though they were sold and tagged as regular length. Sizing them up next to a regular pair of pants shows they are fully 3 inches shorter! I tried them on with flats and they are still too short for me to wear, so I will be trying to take them back despite FS. I posted previously about how they took back a blazer that I bought on FS because the color didn't match with the corresponding pair of pants, so I am hopeful they'll take it back. Otherwise, it was standard Super 120s quality - beautiful fabric, nice drape and subtle sheen, but annoyingly unlined.

  36. Yesterday I received the two belts I've been waiting for and I love them both! I got the Distressed leather denim belt (black with gold hardware) and the now-unavailable burnished-leather belt (item, # 19138, cognac) and I love them both so much! They look like belts I've had forever (problem was, I could never find them at a price I considered acceptable).

I really could have used the burnished one in a size Large, as I like to wear my belts very low and the Medium will just about make it without looking ridiculous. But I did get a Large in the black one, and the (now unavailable) Medium will be showing up this afternoon with the rest of my latest order. I panicked and thought the L might be too big (pipe dreams, ha!) so I quick bought the M when it popped back. I'll just have to see which one fits better.

If by any chance you have the burnished belt in a L and want to trade for my M, please contact me! elaine dot hamill at gmail dot com. Thanks!

  40. I received two suiting dresses today, the Andre and the Banquette. At 5'4.5" I'm right on the edge between regular and petite, so which size to order is always a dilemma for me--although I have a small frame most of my "shortness" is in my legs rather than my torso. Because of the low necklines, I decided to order the petite.

First the Andre--contrary to my fears, the neckline wasn't too low and it can be easily remedied by sewing in a snap. Also, I think the key for the moderately endowed (32B) is a good bra--one that will fill out the dress to avoid gaping but not a push-up that creates cleavage. Ordering a petite probably made a difference in neck gaping. The downside of the petite is that the dress was surprisingly short--3" above the top of my kneecap.

I was disappointed in the seaport blue Banquette. The color was duller than I expected and overall the dress was not the "wow" I need to justify a full price purchase. The neckline showed skin but not boob or cleavage--IMO it's office-appropriate, especially with a necklace to fill it in. It had the dreaded side zipper and was a bit difficult to get off and on. I'd likely purchase the Banquette in a different color on sale.

In both cases the fabric and quality were what I have come to expect from the 120s suiting--no complaints on that ground.

  41. A couple of things that I ordered recently:

Exhibitor mega tote - This bag was just ridiculous. WAY too large...and I love large bags. This was more like an overnight bag. I honestly don't know who could stand to haul this thing around all day, especially since you can't wear it on your shoulder (short handle drop). When I removed the tissue paper, the top corners just fell over. Also, I ordered the beechwood thinking it would be tan, but it was more brown.

Love-me-knot suede platform heels - Have wanted these since I saw them on the "wedding guests" on the Martha Stewart show. I ordered these in the anchor grey. They were definitely pretty in person, but I ultimately didn't love them on my feet (and for that much $, I needed to). I'm not really used to the exposed platform look and I thought there was too much going on in the front. The description claims that you can wear them all day and night. I don't know about that since there wasn't much cushion in the footbed, but they were easy to walk in.

I ended up returning both of these :(

  42. Since I have had *very* limited internet access, I don't know if someone has posted about the crewlets recently. I went today and it was a mix of last fall/winter and a few more recent items. Not many good promos and, as I think we are all aware, the prices were ridiculous compared to retail. Here are some of the things I noticed (sorry I can't remember all the retail names):

-Downtown field jacket in same colors as retail. $128 and seemed to fit boxier than my retail one. Not as stiff, either.

-Pretty tweed skirt like those ballet flats from last year - I think the retail color was called papaya. $90

-Doggie, rooster, fleur-de-lys, rose, beaded rose, and beaded crest tees plus lots of other messy-looking things

-Evening primrose Jackie, cotton Brynn dress, and a scarf, I think. Also a plain black cotton Brynn.

-Lots of Frances camis and shirts.

-That wool ruffle jacket with the unfinished edges on the ruffle. Black.

    -Triomphe jacket. Black.

-Ethereal ruffle v-neck sweaters in cotton.

-Ethereal cardis in cotton. BIG disappointment. The chiffon ruffle is cut so narrow compared to the knit ruffle the chiffon didn't show at all. Too bad, I would have loved some ethereal in cotton.

    -Cotton Celosias in fall colors.

-Ikat dot scarf with black pom-pom trim. ADORABLE and would have bought except I have the wool version from retail. No pom-poms though :(

    -Forever cardis

    -Always cardis

-Merino funnelneck sweater with the buttons on the back of the neck and sleeves. Fewer buttons than retail.

    -Ikat dot pencil in cotton

-Whirling ruffles cardi in shadow and charcoal

-Tango tank in dark charcoal, blush pink, champagne and pewter. $45 -$5

    -Navy gingham perfect-fit shirt

-Cotton version of last fall's silk paisley perfect-fit shirt. The colors (especially the orange) are much brighter than retail version. Garish, IMO. Also a scarf.

    -Velvet Eden blazers

-Cashmere tie-front cardis only in cotton. Dusty blossom and black. $60 -$5

-Open shawl cardigan (believe this was in the dream knit last year). Yucky viscose/nylon blend and very baggy.

-Cotton Mayas - dusty blossom-ish, amber, grey, black and a pretty purply-pink. $60 -%25 Debbye has them pictured on her blog.

Jewelry was uninteresting, but 40% off. Hair accessories 30% and belts 40%.

Not the best crewlet experience ever, but I was thrilled to find the Tango tops and cotton tie-front cardis.

  47. Rynetta - Coralie cami pics in this post. I loved it. And this is coming from someone w/at least 5 J Crew silk camis in a similar silhouette.

I reviewed the sweatshirt dress in this post.
