J.Crew's Latest Catalog + Jezebel = Hilarious!

"Thanks!" to Lia, as well as Elizabeth (in this post), who shared another {very funny} link from Jezebel about J.Crew's latest September catalog. Click here to read their take in its entirety.
What's Hot For September At J.Crew?
By Dodai Stewart
August 30, 2010

The thick, rich, creamy, dreamy September J. Crew catalog has arrived! Dying to know what's hip, now, outta sight for fall? The answers lie within.

My favorite line might be the one for their page 7 (related to the image shown in the top of this post): "$1200 jackets made from the hide of Snuffleupagus, may he rest in peace." The runner-up is the one for page 2: "Coats as dresses, worn with over-the-knee socks. Sure, you might feel a little warm when sitting down to dinner — and you might flash your crotch to the busboy — but fashion is about sacrifice!"

Remember to read the user comments below— some of them are hysterical!!! The best user comment (for me) is: "Re: Katie Holmes... I wasn't aware the Daleks recruited." I have to give the person major points for the spot-on BBC's Dr. Who reference. I actually like the studded silk dress Katie Holmes is wearing, but it does bear a striking resemblance to the greatest enemies that the Doctor has faced. ;)

J.Crew Email: A Madewell.com favorite from Jenna (plus, FREE SHIPPING)

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Marietta & Irina, who let us know about J.Crew & Madewell's latest emails.

Both emails feature Madewell's Silk Cargo Shirt (Item 31437; $110.00) which they lovingly describe as:
Dressed up and laid-back all at once: a cargo-inspired, utilitarian silhouette reimagined in the softest silk. Slim fit. Hidden button closure. Long sleeves. Patch pocket. Import. Dry clean.
Madewell is also reminding us about their offer for free shipping on orders of $100+ with promo code SCORE. This offer will last for a limited time. (It's unclear when it expires.)

It's interesting that both emails today feature the same shirt. That is some pretty good coordination on behalf of J.Crew & Madewell. Well done! It gives me hope that J.Crew can one day sync-up all their websites (J.Crew, Madewell, & J.Crew Factory) like Gap, Inc. does to combine shopping carts.

The "As featured on JCrew.com {thanks for the shout out, guys}" line on the Madewell email stuck out for me a bit. I mean, they are owned by the same company— Madewell is the baby of J.Crew's CEO Mickey Drexler. So it's not like Jenna or J.Crew went way out of their way to help out an unknown partner or something. Of course J.Crew's going to help out their little sister clothing company. ;)

As for the shirt... It reminds me of the Silk Bromley Blouse (Item 30822; $98.00). Both blouses look pretty but I am concerned about the pockets. In the case of the Silk Cargo Shirt— those pockets look huge on the item page!

What are your thoughts on Madewell's Silk Cargo Shirt? Do you like the style? Do you think the patch pockets are a bonus? ;)

J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

Preface: A big "thanks!" to Cass (in this post) who suggested a "weekly 'Did you try on/receive any JC items this week?' post where we could all "deposit" our reviews for various items". I think it is a brilliant idea. Hopefully this will help out our fellow JCAs! :)

This is the weekly "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs}" post, to help each other share our reviews.

So if you have recently purchased, or stopped by a J.Crew store to try on an item (or two) from J.Crew, maybe you might be willing to share that information with us in this post.

Also, this request is not just limited to clothes. Please feel free to discuss bags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc.

In particular, if you could mention a few of the noteworthy details like fit, size, fabric, and the like— that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance! :)

The Huffington Post Wishes the Best for J.Crew

The following is an article from the Huffington Post (click here to read in its entirety) about their take on J.Crew's current situation & future plans:
J.Crew and Me: A Hopeful Plan to Invigorate the Economy
By Pamela Tom
August 30, 2010

Three years ago, I discovered J.Crew. You know, the somewhat preppy clothing store that eludes a sense of fashionable elegance all the same? I was looking for a place that offered my style: classic with a fresh flare. I had outgrown the predictable offerings of Banana Republic and the once-fresh, but now too conservative picks at Ann Taylor. J. Crew was perfect: all American fare with a little spice.

First of all, let's clear up the mystery. According to Yahoo! Answers, the "J" in J. Crew means something: "According to a J.Crew sales rep," The man who started the company liked to row, so he chose 'crew' and a letter that looked good in front of it."

It didn't matter what letter the company chose ... "crew" translates to active, healthy - success. And their clothes do a good job of living up to the name.

My first purchase was a pair of jeans. I needed a good fit but more importantly, I was looking for fabric. Not just any ol' denim would do ... it had to be the right shade of blue, faded but not distressed, cool enough to wear on days off but nice enough to feel "dressed." And please - soft and wearable. My old standby, Levi's 501's, looked like I was stuck in the past.

My "hip slung" jeans were the answer. (I'm wearing them right now!) As J.Crew would have me, I was hooked. Soon I was buying shirts, skirts, sweaters, and dresses. Thanks to J.Crew, I embraced cashmere. Lambs wool blends became a thing of the past. I own crew necks, V-necks, and cardigans in every color imaginable - from basic black and navy to emerald green and orange. I even delved into accessories: belts, jewelry and (sigh) ... shoes!

For years now, shoppers could attempt to satisfy their fix (and pocketbooks) by checking out the J. Crew outlet store, always found in a "Premium Mall Outlet." There one can find classic J.Crew styles and the upcoming season's trends at a sizable discount. The company's rewards program encouraged our appetites.

In today's Wall Street Journal, however, it was announced that J.Crew outlet apparel will be available online in September. A first, and telling sign of the times. Americans are keeping a tight grip on their wallets these days and the economy will not rebound without increased consumer spending.

I'm one of those consumers. In my attempt to spend more wisely these days and do what I think is best, I am also one of the millions of Americans who is stalling an economic recovery. Economists are proposing numerous ways to kick start spending but debilitating unemployment puts the brakes on any frills. Most of us don't "need" new clothes. We simply want them. We like treating ourselves to something we deem as "special." Funny how a label signifies, "I made it." Of course, it didn't hurt sales when we saw that Michelle Obama often wears clothing from J.Crew.

J.Crew is chic yet accessible. You can buy it off the rack. While some high end designers and clothing manufacturers have reduced their prices to weather the storm, others fear such a move will compromise their image. J. Crew's foray into cheaper online bargains is clearly a necessary move. CEO Mickey Drexler (former GAP superman) is no dummy. It's no longer just about branding, it's about revenue.

I hope J.Crew succeeds, not because I'm a faithful fan, but because the US needs a multitude of stimulus ideas and implementation. So it's just one company trying to stay out of the red. Even though I made a pledge not to buy any more clothes (my closet, even with slim hangers, is at its max), I'll be one of the first to check out the new online outlet.

I applaud any effort to jump start our economy, to get housing prices back to normal, to reduce foreclosures, and to get Americans back to work. Only when all of those things occur will I be able to strut my stuff with true confidence.
I actually agree with the author in that I want J.Crew to succeed too. I hope it stays around for a long time as it is still my favorite retailer! :)

What are your thoughts on the article? Did you agree or disagree with any of the points made? Please share your take! :)

J.Crew Email: Dreamy cardi, dreamy price

"Thanks!" to so many of you, including Louisa, Lia, Irina, GoldCoastGal, Desert Flower, Marietta & Just Visiting, as well as wellfedfred & Devon (in this post), who let us know about J.Crew's latest email.

The email features the Dream Open Shawl-Collar Cardigan (Item 29619 ; $118.00) which J.Crew is offering for $80.00 for a limited time. (Offer expires 9/1/10.) J.Crew describes this ready-for-Fall-sweater as:
Perfect when draped over layered looks to add softness and warmth. The 7-gauge knit makes it the just-right-weight sweater to add texture but keep your silhouette streamlined. Made from our special dream yarn—a supersoft cashmere blend that feels just heavenly. Wool/nylon/cashmere. Shawl collar. Long sleeves. Hits at hip. Import. Dry clean.
The navy version seems pretty online. I l-o-v-e the look of shawl collars. Alas, I don't know if I can pull this particular one off.

What are your thoughts on the Dream Open Shawl-Collar Cardigan? Have you seen it in person or tried it on? If so, please share! :)

P.S. I apologize for a delay in response this weekend & today. I just got a new laptop (the old one is dying) and I am in the process of transferring files & programs over.

J.Crew's Outlook Takes a Hit

The following is an article from Market Watch (click here to read in its entirety) about J.Crew's most recent performance:
J. Crew, industry darling, hit on outlook
By Andria Cheng
August 27, 2010

J.Crew Group Inc., which has had a streak of growth that outpaced its rivals and exceeded Wall Street expectations, saw its shares hit on Friday after the company lowered its outlook for the year and its third-quarter outlook also fell short.

"The continued economic uncertainty that we are all seeing is leading us to take a more conservative outlook for the back half of the year," Chief Executive Mickey Drexler said on a conference call late Thursday. "The customer is more selective with their purchases. More than ever, they are focused on newness. The headline is 'They're deferring. They're waiting. They're comparison shopping and people are a little nervous."'

J.Crew shares fell 7.3% to $31 in early afternoon trading, their biggest percentage decline in at least a year.

The clothing retailer cut its full-year outlook to a range of $2.25 to $2.35 a share from a previous projection of as much as $2.45 a share. The company forecast third-quarter profit of 55 cents to 60 cents a share. Both projections fell short of analysts' estimates.

Economic impact aside, analysts said some of J.Crew's fall merchandise also has been too edgy and not resonated as well with its customers. The company also may have been hurt by increased competition from rivals from Ann Taylor Stores Corp. to Talbots Inc. that have also offered embellished tops and other looks that are similar to J. Crew's offerings, analysts said.

Still, Wall Street likes the stock. Among 20 analysts tracked by FactSet, more rated the stock a buy than a hold with only one underweight rating.

"Weak guidance was attributed to weaker spending trends, but we suspect some fashion missteps may have played a role, too," said analyst Linda Tsai of MKM Partners in a report. "This is not completely unusual and a bit reassuring, as we think (J.Crew) can correct this for Holiday. (We) still think stock is attractive."

Regarding the company outlook, analysts said a 10% increase in inventory growth per square foot at the end of the second quarter may likely translate to some profit-eroding discounts if demand falters.

"Given that (J. Crew) does not have strong ability to cut orders, we expect accelerated promotional activity resulting in margin pressure," said analyst Pamela Quintiliano at Oppenheimer & Co.

To lift growth, the company for the first time is bringing its factory outlet products online for sale. It also has opened its first wedding store and is opened more locations just for men as well as its Crewcuts for kids.

The warnings came after the company reported second-quarter profit surged a better-than-expected 88% to $34.9 million, or 53 cents a share on an 11% comparable store sales gain. Analysts surveyed by FactSet Research had forecast earnings of 45 cents a share.
Interesting what is going on with J.Crew! I hope they are able to get things back on {fashion} track with the Holiday roll-out. :)

What is your take on the article? Would you consider purchasing J.Crew stock? Do you think J.Crew will perform better in its next quarter?

Starting Today: Take an Extra 20% Off Final Sale (& free shipping)

A big "thanks!" to many of you, including Rebecca (in this post), as well as Marietta, who let us know about another offer from J.Crew.

J.Crew is offering customers 20% off any purchase from their Final Sale {no minimum} and free shipping (over $150 *after* discounts applied) with promo code OURTREAT. This offer is good through 8/29/10.

It seems like J.Crew has been moving a lot of new arrival merchandise to the Final Sale section. Perhaps it is to make room for more Fall merchandise. Here's to finding some great deals! :)

Off topic: The chat feature on J.Crew is now available on the top of its homepage. (The only way to access it before was when it randomly popped up on your screen.) It's great that J.Crew took the initiative to make its website more user friendly. Kudos J.Crew!

Will you be taking advantage of this promotion? Are there any sale items you are interested in getting?

J.Crew Outlet Coming Online

A big "thanks!" to RatsOnParade (in this post) who shared the following news from the Daily Finance (click here to read in its entirety). Also, "thanks!" to an Anonymous JCA who confirmed that J.Crew outlet online will arrive sometime between mid-to-late September!
J.Crew to Put Outlet Store Online to Attract Bargain-Hunters
By Hugh Collins
August 27, 2010

J.Crew Group Inc. (JCG) plans to let customers buy its outlet-store clothing online starting next month, making it easier to get its low-cost clothes at a time when consumers are counting every penny.

Clothing companies typically place outlet stores in out-of-the-way malls, forcing customers to drive long distances in search of a bargain. Now, J.Crew is hoping that it can tap this demand for bargains without undermining sales at its main stores.

Customers are "deferring, they're waiting, they're comparison-shopping, and people are a little nervous," CEO Millard Drexler said, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Online and outlet sales have both seen strong growth even in a weak economy. J.Crew's profit almost doubled in the quarter ending July 31, hitting $34.9 million, from $18.6 million a year earlier.
I remember a few holiday seasons back (maybe 5 years ago???), J.Crew offered a J.Crew Outlet website. However, it was for a limited time and just items on sale.

It will be great to see all the merchandise available at outlet online. Especially since the outlets may not be easily accessible for some of their shoppers.

Hopefully J.Crew could do something like Gap Inc. does, and combine shipping across the various online stores of theirs (J.Crew, Madewell, J.Crew Outlet).

What are your thoughts about J.Crew Factory coming online? Do you think it is a good move for them? Would you visit the site?

Talbots Copying J.Crew Too?

In Tuesday's "J.Crew News: Battle with Ann Taylor" post, we discussed the similarities of Ann Taylor (& AT Loft) offerings with those from J.Crew. Many of you mentioned Talbots as another go-to retailer.

Well, I just got a catalog from them today and... Dayum! I thought I was looking at a J.Crew catalog!

The Talbots cover has the same rich, dark tones that J.Crew's September catalog has. But that's not all! Many of J.Crew's {lovely} models from season's past are in the Talbots latest issue too.

As for the clothes... There were lots of {beautiful} pieces in the Talbots catalog that reminded me of J.Crew's current offerings. Below are a few examples.
Talbot's Sequin Boyfriend Cardigan (Item C21025; $149.00) versus J.Crew's Ombré Paillette Cardigan (Item 27176; $118.00, now $79.99).

Talbots' Sequin Silk Sweater (Item 16025; $129.00) versus Sequined Starland Tank (Item 22401; $138.00, now $59.99).

Talbots' Faux Fur Collar ($49.00) versus J.Crew's Mongolian Lamb Stole (Item 31393; $98.00).

I realize that J.Crew borrows a few elements of design from other designers when it comes to their own styles. However, it does feel like some of J.Crew's direct competitors are borrowing from J.Crew. (I could be wrong, since I only really pay attention to J.Crew.) It seems like J.Crew is clearly doing something right to have all these other retailers changing their styles to that of J.Crew's. ;)

What are your thoughts on Talbots similarities to J.Crew? Do you like Talbots? What do think of the various retailers sharing a striking resemblance to J.Crew (or maybe it's vice versa, what do I know)? ;)

Dear J.Crew, Bring Back the Bella {bank it!}

As I mentioned before, I often check eBay to purchase missed J.Crew merchandise opportunities of seasons' past.

I saw an auction on eBay end (not my own!) for the Wool Herringbone Bella Jacket in Grey (in size 2, just my size!) What amazed me was how much it sold for... $172.49 plus an additional $10 for shipping! There was also a Bella Winter Coat that recently sold for $169.50 plus $10 for shipping. Amazing!

This jacket (& coat) came out in Fall 2007! The fact that shoppers are willing to pay so much for it after all these years is a testament to the desirability of this classic piece.

I get why so many are willing to pay so much too! I own the Grey and Coral Red versions and would not give them up for anything. I would gladly pay $180 for this jacket (in rich colors like Azalea and timeless Black) if it came out this Fall/Winter 2010. :)

I seriously think J.Crew should consider re-introducing this one-of-kind jacket. They could make so much money off this one item too! :)

What are your thoughts on the Bella Jacket? Do you still love it after all these years (like I do!) Do you think J.Crew should re-introduce the exclusive jacket of theirs?

J.Crew Spotted in Lonny Magazine

A big "thanks!" to Raina & Shannon who shared the following J.Crew sightings in the August/September issue of Lonny Magazine (click here). To view the image larger, click here & here.

The article describes J.Crew's Fall Collection as:
One part chic drama, one part relaxed nonchalance. She's ready for strolling the Fall streets no matter the weather. Translate this autumnal look to your own abode with texture-rich pieces that will warm up even the starkest interiors.
Hmm. It's hard to translate those looks to real life for me. However, I am confident that one of you JCAs could do it and make it look good too! :)

What are your thoughts on the styling? Have you warmed up to it now that it is getting closer to Fall? Do you agree with the magazine's take? :)

J.Crew Email: Shop 'til you drop: NEW STYLES added to final sale (plus, FREE SHIPPING extended)

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Silver Lining (in this post), as well as Marietta, who let us know about J.Crew's latest email.

J.Crew is announcing that even more new styles have been added to their Final Sale (click here to shop online)! This offer also extends to brick & mortar stores.

Some new additions include:
  • Gusto Cami (Item 28581; $98.00, now $69.99)
  • Dot Chiffon Betsy Wrap Cami (Item 28509; $98.00, now $59.99)
  • Merino Shirred Cardigan (Item 29622; $88.00, now $49.99)
  • Stretch Double-Serge Pencil Skirt (Item 22659; $98.00, now $49.99)
They are also extending their offer for free shipping on orders of $150+ with promo code SHIP150. This offer now expires Friday, 8/27/10. {Yey!}

Will you be checking out the Final Sale? Any new styles interest you? If so, please share! :)

Follow-Up to "J.Crew Event: you're invited..."

As mentioned in the August 12th "J.Crew Event: you're invited..." post, J.Crew hosted a special event in stores across the country. What made this event a bit more exciting was the promise of the following:
Be one of the first to spend $150 or more and receive an exclusive gift from our very own Jenna Lyons.
Usually the gift is pretty luxurious, like the Pearl-Cluster Necklace (Item 14503; $125.00) & the Jenna Bracelet (Item 98337; $75.00). Well, in the cases of the NYC stores where Jenna Lyons was actually present for the event. (Refer to the "J.Crew Holiday Collection In NYC with Jenna Lyons" post as an example.)

Unfortunately, the gift for JCAs this time around was not as impressive- the Reusable Canvas Tote (Item 24934; $10.00).

"Thanks!" to the following JCAs who shared their stories of the event.
  • Elise (in this post) shares: "Sadly disapointed with the Jenna Lyons "hand picked" gift wih a $150 purchase last evening. Seriously - the $10 canvas bag that they have already sent some J.Crew fans via mail as free token gift. WTF???"
  • Girlification of Jules (in this post) shares: "Oooof. OT but I went to the event at the Houston Galleria - the "exclusive handpicked gift from Jenna Lyons" was one of the canvas totes. Which is a $10 item. Tomorrow starts Tax Free weekend in Texas. Tax on $150 (minimum to get the gift) is $12.38."
I also attended this event and their gift to customers was the Ribbon Raindrop Necklace (Item 25534; $45.00, now $19.99). This is the same necklace that languished in stores for weeks at the low price of $14.99 (before 30% off!)

It's clear that all the gifts for this event were the less expensive, want to move from inventory, kind. I doubt that Jenna hand selected these gifts (but who knows?) Which is disappointing, only because the previous gifts were so f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c. I thought that they would be fantastic this time around too.

Did you attend the Special Collection event last Thursday? Did you get the same gifts from your local J.Crew store? If so, please share! :)

J.Crew Spotted in Harper's Bazaar

"Thanks!" to Desert Flower, who not only let us know about a few J.Crew items being spotted in the latest issue of Harper's Bazaar, but also scanned the images for us to view! (Click on the image to see it larger.)

The page on the left features a pretty Sweater Jacket ($200.00) and Funnelneck Winter Coat ($425.00). The collars on the outerwear looks amazing!

The page on the right features what I thought was the Perfect-Fit Mixed-Tape Cardigan (Item 29176; $49.50). However, it is not upon closer look. Incidentally, I love the Perfect-Fit Cardigans. They are super comfortable, easy to wash, and maintain their shape. However, I did not like this latest version. The pockets stuck out weirdly for me (making me look like I have extra bulk on the hips where the pockets are). Moreover, the "doubled grosgrain tape" along the edges just made the cardigan look unfinished.

What are your thoughts on the sweater jacket featured? Do you think you order it? Do you own or tried on the Perfect-Fit Mixed-Tape Cardigan? If so, please share! :)

Madewell Email: Meet The Aberdeen Boot (+ free shipping)

"Thanks!" to Marietta & Ketan, who let us know about Madewell's latest email. The email features the Aberdeen Two-Tone Boot (Item 29775; $198.00) which they describe as:
Two styles in one: This traditional, hijacked-from-menswear staple comes with an adorable—and removable—fan of fringe. Italian vachetta leather upper. Leather lining. Hits at ankle. 1" stacked heel. Man-made sole. Made in Italy.
The boots are super cute. The ability to remove the fringe is brilliant! I think the boots would look fabulous with the right pair of jeans. However, I am not sure about wearing them with shorts.

Madewell is also reminding us about their offer for free shipping on orders of $100+ with promo code BONUS. This offer will last for a limited time. (It's unclear when it expires.)

Wait, there is more! Madewell is running a sweepstakes with Lucky Magazine to win a $5,000 shopping spree. There is also a daily prize. Yey! To enter, click HERE. This sweepstakes ends 11/2/10. For official rules, click here.

What are your thoughts on the Aberdeen Boot? Do you like the style? Do you own or tried them on? If so, please share! :)

Today: J. Crew Mens Shop Opens
By Tiffany Davis

August 24, 2010

We were one of the first to check out the newly-opened J.Crew Mens Shop this morning, and as with all things J.Crew lately, we've got plenty of good things to say.

Much like the recently opened bridal shop, the two-floor space feels much more boutique than big brand. The decor is lodge-like in a stylish, man-cave way: minimalist, distressed leather chairs in the fitting rooms, display tables appointed with arrow bows and "Field Notes" journals, and unpolished hardwoods throughout.

Design director Frank Muytjens was kind enough to personally walk us through the collection of hand-picked books on topics ranging from Big Sur Bakery recipes to Factory Records co-founder and visual artist Peter Saville.

Upstairs, shop sweaters, cashmere PJs, jackets, handkerchiefs and scarves, and proper-looking luggage. Downstairs is home to a suiting display, shoe vignette, and a bevy of outerwear options. Footwear by English label Crocket and Jones (a store exclusive), Quoddy moccasins, Sperrys, and J.Crew's ever-popular McAlister suede boots are all up for grabs, too.

And die-hard J.Crew store shoppers are gonna love this: The brand's signature "red phone" has been upgraded to an iPad, so fitting room associates can literally order a missing size without leaving your side.

Gentlemen, your wardrobes are in for a treat.

Congrats to all those in the area!!! :)

J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}

J.Crew News: Battle with Ann Taylor

There are some interesting articles over Ann Taylor's similarities with J.Crew. The first article comes from Fashionista (click here to read in its entirety):
Is Ann Taylor’s “J.Crew” Strategy Paying Off?
By Lauren Sherman

August 20, 2010

Over the last two years, Ann Taylor has made a noticeable effort to bring its apparel and accessories offerings out of the naughts and into the new, uber-fashion-conscious decade.

In fact, many industry insiders we’ve spoken to about AT’s reformation have noted: “They’re trying be J.Crew.” Evidence of this marketing scheme can be found in the retailer’s newfound preppy-meets-glam aesthetic. The company also recently inked a deal with the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund to host a runway show in Los Angeles this October.

Well, whether or not Ann Taylor has taken a page from J.Crew’s playbook doesn’t really seem to matter today. The New York-based retailer reported a very successful second quarter, with overall sales increasing by 2.8% to $483.5 million (when compared with the same quarter in 2009).

Comparable store sales–or sales in stores that have been open for at least one year–were up 6.1%, compared to a 22.4% decline last year. And e-commerce was up 28.5%. Overall sales for the first half of 2010 were $959.7 million, up almost 7% from 2009.

While these numbers aren’t mind-boggling, they are an improvement. It looks like Ann Taylor’s strategy might be working. For now, at least.
The following is a post from the Frisky, which offers a slideshow of the two retailers (click here for the article & slideshow):
Ann Taylor or J.Crew? It's Hard To Tell
By Annika Harris
August 23, 2010

We, along with other fashion insiders and shoppers, have noticed that Ann Taylor and Loft have been looking a lot like J.Crew. All three retailers seem to be targeting the same group—women who want a tasty and stylish stew of Parisian, preppy, and urban chic. So we decided to play a little game to see if there’s a difference between J.Crew and Ann Taylor.

Does Ann Taylor come close to recreating J.Crew’s aesthetic? Can you tell the difference between the two brands?...
Well, I do agree that the offerings of Ann Taylor & Ann Taylor Loft share a striking resemblance to J.Crew. I never paid attention to Ann Taylor until a year and a half ago. All of sudden they were offering styles I wanted to buy.

Not only were the styles familiar, but so was the marketing. Ann Taylor began sending emails similar to J.Crew's "Jenna's Picks". If I remember correctly, Ann Taylor lured away several members of J.Crew's creative team in the past few years too. I think it is smart for Ann Taylor to offer what customers want, but they should be careful about mimicking J.Crew's strategy too much.

What are your thoughts on Ann Taylor looking like J.Crew? Are you a fan of Ann Taylor too? Do you think it is a good move for Ann Taylor? Do you think this hurts or helps J.Crew?

J.Crew Email: Falling for Jenna's Picks (plus, FREE SHIPPING)

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Marietta, who let us know about J.Crew's most recent email, which showcases all of Jenna Lyons' picks for the latest catalog. Click here to view all the items selected.

The theme for these picks are:
Dip into our treasure chest of tactile delights featuring a few luxe highlights from J.Crew Collection– A bit of fluff, a smidgen of silk, a little lace and some sparkle, of course, buttery leather and so-soft flannel help round out the mix.
From her selections, the one I like the most is the Crystal Parade Necklace (Item 31569; $150.00). It looks super glam with all its crystals. Can you imagine how amazing it would look under a crisp white blouse? Loves it!

But why, oh why, did she select the Martinete Feather Jacket (Item 29084; $1,200.00)?!? Let's overlook the ridiculous price tag for a second. The jacket would make anyone (including that fabulous model posing in it) look like a rejected Muppet character from Jim Henson's Dark Crystal.

What are your thoughts on the items selected? Do you like the color palette? Which items would have made your top picks of new arrivals that you are loving this month?

J.Crew's Website: You Decide!

"Thanks!" to IRL who let us know about J.Crew updating their look online at their Facebook page (click here).

They share the following:
We’ve given ourselves a makeover (several, in fact). We’re trying out some new looks at jcrew.com and we want to know, which one is your fave?
My first reaction: "No joke you are giving yourselves a makeover!" ;) I am curious what other changes J.Crew has in store. Do we get a vote on those changes too? :)

As for the variations of the home page, I like the standard upper left one. It is clean and simple. It showcases the image nicely and the navigation is easy to use. Although, honestly, I can work with any of the four options.

What are your thoughts on the potential makeover J.Crew is undertaking? Which home page for J.Crew online do you want to see?

J.Crew Email: Crushing on velvet (plus, FREE SHIPPING)

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Marietta & Ketan, who shared with us the latest email from J.Crew.

The email above features the the Velvet Ruby Jacket (Item 29018; $168.00). J.Crew describes this velvet jacket as:
Our blazer meets cardigan—elegantly deconstructed and drapey, in buttery panne velvet with sheer blended silk georgette lining and trim for a modern mix of textures and vibes. The finishing touch? A removable grosgrain belt for waist definition and added dimension. Rayon/silk. Lapel collar. Hook-and-bar closure. Long sleeves. Welt pockets with flaps. Fully lined. Hits at hip. Import. Dry clean. Catalog/jcrew.com only.
This jacket has been discussed on this blog before (refer to the July 15th "J.Crew Email: A chic peek, just for Cardmembers" post.) This jacket looks cute in the email above but not so great in real life. It's missing that "something" for me.

What are your thoughts on the Velvet Ruby Jacket? Have you seen or tried it on? Do you like the style- from the shape to the ribbon? Please share! :)

Darlings, is it time for a coupon code?

Yes, it is that wonderful time!

A big "thanks!" to Rose (in this post), who is super nice to share with us that J.Crew is offering free shipping on orders of $150+ with promo code SHIP150. This offer expires 9/25/10.

P.S. I have noticed that other blogs &
websites post J.Crew codes & coupons *after* this blog does. If you happen to get codes & coupons from the JCA blog & post them at your site, could you please give give a "shout out" to the JCA blog? This way more JCAs are inclined to share. TIA! :)
