Extra 20% Off Sale Is Here {wahoo!}

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Maureen1125 (in this post), Lilac Cupcake (in this post), as well as Marietta, who shared with us the latest news from J.Crew this morning.

J.Crew is offering customers 20% off any purchase from Sale {no minimum} and free shipping {on $150+} with promo code EXTRA20. This offer expires 4/30/10.
This is the sale that many of us have been waiting for. I am thrilled to see both offers of the percent off & free shipping together. Let's hope this sale extends to brick & mortar (B&M) stores too!

Will you be taking advantage of this promotion? Are there any sale items you are interested in getting?

  1. Yes! Yes! Yes! The Dauphine is mine!!!!!!

er, I mean to say, I have been eyeing the darling tweed Daupine for quite some time now, and it is now a steal!

  2. I placed an order late last night but am going to call and get the extra % applied.

I did order one sale item last week and glad I did as it is sold out in my size now.

  3. I only bit on a marked down Jackie cardi in bright seaside...have been waiting on that color for a while! I did just place a huge order the other day from the sale section...wonder if they'll do a PA for me. I have never asked for one before!

  4. yay! i was able to score the vintage zebra cardigan for a great price! :)

  5. I finally ordered the Rose Trellis Taryn Gown for my brother's wedding in Peru! $280 is a LOT easier to swallow than $425!!! YAY!!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Leslie,
That is a great deal on such a special even dress. Congrats:)

    ReplyDelete
  7. I meant EVENT. Sorry. Hope the wedding is fantastic:)

  8. Alexis - Where does it say the sales are Final? I will only buy something from this sale if it's returnable.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Pansy: LOL! I must be so brainwashed by J.Crew now!!! I was on auto-pilot when I created that post and just put "Final" without realizing it. ;) Good catch! :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Thanks Genny! I thought it was a great deal too!! I hope it fits! :)

  11. Can anyone speak to whether or not the % off is also in store? I know that usually it's not.

Like the Chic Chauffeur, I've been eyeing the Dauphine myself and wondered whether to drive to the B&M to get it instantly or order online, save the gas, and just wait. Hmmmm....

    ReplyDelete
  12. Chic Chauffer - what size did you get in the Dauphine? I've been stalking it also. I get a 2 in perfect shirts, a small in perfect t's and most sweaters and extra small in slub and painter style t's.

    ReplyDelete
  13. and the extra percentage off gets me again.

i picked up two pairs of skimmer pants. i got the seaweed (which i bought at full price and haven't worn yet; so will be returning) and the orchard shadow (which are from the most recent rollout and are already on sale?).

i highly recommend the skimmer pants!

i also picked up a pink frost jackie cardigan and shell.

  14. crewcrazy - dinagideon and bichonluvr said they sized down - bichonluvr went with a 12, instead of her usual 14, and dina sized all the way down to a 2 - she is petite up top but usually wears a 6, sometimes a 4 on top, I believe. I was planning to go with an 8, because there was so much room in the 10. But that may be a good reason to try on in store, to verify.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Nothing catching my eye. Curious about the broken in boyfriend chino though. Maybe more things will be added? Kinda wanted a full priced code. But it's looking like that's never going to happen.:(

    ReplyDelete
  16. Picked up a few button down shirts in bright hydrangea and sandstone and a merino turtleneck sweater (search under sweaters to find). All the good pants were gone this morning!!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yay! while most of what's on my wishlist is full-price summer items, I was thrilled to snag another linen v-neck sweater--such a great basic.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I ordered some stuff for myself and my DD. I noticed some items were back to Full Price (Denim pencil skirt, Metallic Beacon hobo...). Not cool JCrew!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Picked up the Frances striped ruffle shirt (have been wanting this one for awhile), a Jackie twinset in bright seaside, and the Celosia cardi in grey.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I bought a sweater just yesterday. If I call J. Crew, will they give me this extra percent off?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I usually use these spring/summer sales to stock up on cashmere for the fall, but this year the inventory is so low! I'm still grabbing the featherweight v-neck cardigan. Luckily no final sale so if it's too sheer I can return it. Not sure whether to get a small or a medium, since the merino camp cardigan, which I love, runs large. This is the same style but they say it's fitted.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The J. Crew website needs to set up a wishlist page! Every time I place an order, I have to delete about twenty items that I have in my cart just because I like them. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. himmiefan: You can try! I called the "VIP" number and while I did get a price adjustment, I was reminded that I had "my last one-time courtesy price adjustment back in January". So the SA did it over the phone, but she was very snide about it.

Look, I get how the sales work and how they are supposed to move inventory. But what I pointed out to the SA in January as well is:
    1. the items I want are still available
    2. none of the items are marked final sale
    3. I feel in this case I would be saving JC money by not having them process a new order *and* a return

I don't understand this "shaming" over the phone thing - if a SA did his/her homework on the item(s), they would see that in some cases it really makes more sense to offer a price adjustment, rather than just mouthing the company line.

Honestly, based on her constant sighing and exasperated voice, the money I saved ($100+) will stay right in my pocket, JCrew. It's a shame because I probably would have blown the savings on the sale...

    /rant

    ReplyDelete
  24. @audball, himmiefan - I agree with what you say Audball, it is more useful to give a price adjustment even if the customer's request maybe some days or how many ever days after the promotion. When I call and if they refuse, I usually tell them that I would probably have to return the item and reorder again; and they could help by saving me a trip to the store and processing a return. Its funny that they have to remind you when you had a price adjustment.. what do they think? Scolding a customer for being a bad girl is going to scare her away?!... ok my rant is over :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have placed like 3 orders! Now, I can return the sale items that I bought from store without any discounts.

Btw, I'm going to return the jeweled jardin jacket because it's big for me esp on the armhole and across shoulder. It's a beautiful piece and the sequins are securely attached and no snags. It was shipped to me in a nicely wrapped gift box. I guess when you paid $495+taxes, that's the packaging you deserved! It was the same packaging when I bought the chiffon petal vest for the same price! If anyone would like to get it now instead of waiting for months (backordered till Aug?), then let me know. I can ask the SA to put it on hold after I return it and they can ship to you for free. Full price item is always free shipping from the store. Almost forgot, it's a size 0.

  26. By the way, this promotion is too good to resist.. I ended up ordering items I had been stalking for a while; like a black blazer...I missed wearing the trend last fall and early this year because it was too expensive for me to buy one at full price. Oh well, will wear it now and always .

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wooooo hoooo! I just got the Sunshine Peony skirt!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Got more Jackie sets and one last linen/cotton vneck tee - practically own all colors and cannot live without 'em, so soft & comfy!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I won't be taking advantage of this promo after all. I went to buy the watch straps (that are in the sale section!) and noticed that the EXTRA20 was not applied to them. When I called to inquire about the glitch, the phone rep made it sound like I was an idiot for not knowing the straps are on promotion and that promotional items are not eligible for the Extra20 off. Perhaps it shouldn't be in the sale section!?! ;) So I dumped everything in my cart. It's a good reminder that I don't need those lovely items. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Audball: I hear you too. :)

Incidentally, the Gap gives you a price adjustment up to 7 days, even if it is on sale. I purchased a whole bunch of items before the 40% off sale. I just went back with my receipts and they scanned them to get my refund effortlessly. It was such a smooth process that it was a pleasure buying from the Gap. Perhaps J.Crew, who is known for service, would consider something similar for sale items.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Crewcrazy, def. size down a size.... It is collection, and they run big, I wear a 2 in tops at jcrew, and actually stuck with the 2 jacket, because I wanted to leave room for a sweater if I like!

    ReplyDelete
  32. number9cloud, I use different web browsers to make my own wishlist. I have my wishlist in Firefox and when I'm ready to order I open an IE window and do it from there since my shopping bag is always empty after placing the last order. It seems to work fine, been doing that for at least 6 months.

Of course, you have to add everything you want to buy to your empty bag but I just copy the item numbers, search and voila - add to bag.

    ReplyDelete
  33. @ Alexis- The same thing happened to me... I put two watch straps in my cart and at checkout each of them went to full price $20 after I put in EXTRA20. I just removed them for my cart and went ahead with rest of my order. Yeah, I agree they put them in the sale section and then claim extra20 is not applied to them; how weird is that.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Was about to check out but... the one item I actually needed, an orange jackie cardigan, disappeared from my cart. So my $250 order become a $0 order. Oh well! I had the cardi, three jackie shells, and the honeyclover prarie dress as a ride along just to try on (yeah right, I'd probably keep it!). Too bad for you jcrew! Oh well, maybe they will replenish tomorrow am.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Okha: At least I wasn't the only one! :) It is a confusing practice that frankly I find a bit deceitful on J.Crew's part. It makes me not want to shop when stuff like this happens.

Especially since we see J.Crew going out of their way to make sure certain items that were on sale/promo (the day before the sale) become full priced again, (while the sale is going on so the promo isn't applied to them). If J.Crew is that coordinated for those cases, they could certainly remove non-sale items from the sale. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm weak. I ordered 3 jackie twin sets, rationalizing that I'll wear them to work on really hot summer days when it's too steamy to wear my new Talbots lightweight cashmere twin sets. Ok, now I REALLY am done shopping for a while!

OT, but related: I'm wearing one of my "new" JCrew liberty print shirts, circa 2007, that I rescued from my underbed storage bin a few days ago. I'm wearing the blue print shirt, but I swear I also have the red print shirt stashed away somewhere, probably in my messy and poorly organized storage locker at Manhattan Mini Storage.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Alexis and Okha: Thank you for the support... :)!

  38. Have been eyeing the Cyprus Gladiator sandals in gold for a while now, and finally bit! Threw in a twisted neck tee in pale blossom, and the distressed matchstick jean to make my my minimum.

I really appreciate this blog, Alexis! It is one of the first places I go in the morning, so I was able to see the promo info and get my order in before stuff was sold out :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think this will be my fourth order this month! Luckily a bunch of stuff will be returned and hopefully I can take a break from J. Crew, but if irresistible deals and sales pop up I think I'm doomed :(. I'm really hoping the Lilly Peep Toe flats go on sale and a size 7 will magically appear again.

This time I ordered the Tabitha T-strap sandals, Jackie Cardigan in bright seaside, Frances Striped Ruffle shirt in hazel blue(ordered previously, but I want my discount!), and full price for the Double-Serge pencil skirt in abyss blue (such a lovely color!).

Hopefully this will hold me over until June...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Blergh - I made an order last night with some sale items.... the watercolor skirt, the waterfloral cardigan, and a featherweight cotton cardigan. Here's hoping I get a price adjustment! I should have really anticipated this - but bought yesterday since it was the last day of the free shipping offer. I had some new items I wanted to get.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Alexis: As you said when JCrew goes out of their way to put back sale items to Full Price, it really disgusts me.
I also hate that they "can't" do a price adjustment for sale items. Wouldn't it be cheaper for them to do it knowing a customer will just re-buy it?
Sorry for my rant. I received a wrong item (again for the 4th time this month) on my order yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hey JCA's,

This is off topic, but I got my spring rewards today. Just thought you guys would want to keep an eye out.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Been waiting for a % off! I snagged the Caprice jacket that I've been stalking (many reviews have been unfavorable, and yes, it is not exactly slimming, but I love it anyway), a cashmere tee, and one of the new softspun cardis.

Oooh, spring rewards! An excuse for ~more~ shopping. Thanks for the heads up, Susan!

    ReplyDelete
  44. jcrewphd: Ugh. I am so sorry to hear about your latest order mishap!!! One time is too many, but four in a single month seems outrageous on their end. :( I hope J.Crew properly resolves the situation for you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. dang. I placed an order this am, and my rewards card was in the mail this afternoon! do you think they would let me apply it?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Lauren - I did not like the Caprice, but I saw it on a very chic woman. She had on skinny black ankle pants and Tory Burch Revas. She looked darling.

If you want a link to a host of irl reviews of the spring sale section items, visit this post.

  47. I have a few things in my cart, but I've hesitated since this morning. I don't think it's meant to be. All this offer really does is negate the shipping charges if you're buying $50-$100 worth of stuff. Blargh!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I ordered the chiffon forget-me-knot cardi and the ahoy matey rugby for my nephew. Not enough for the free shipping, but I didn't want to add stuff just for that. I want to have some money for the new stuff this weekend. :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Alexis,
I bought the watchstraps months ago during a % off final sale, and they were in that section, and I did get the extra off. That is ridiculous!!!
    Call them BACK! I would.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I have never had any trouble getting the extra percent off of promo items if they're in the sale section. I wonder if this is a new rule.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I was searching for a dress, and discovered a new(?) selection named...Anouk! How pithy!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Re: % off promo items - I think it may be a new thing - I tried getting % off some perfect fit tees during the last promo and it kept un-sale-price-ing them, so finally I gave up. I guess it is a new rule....sigh....

On a positive note, I did go ahead and order my Dauphine, so I'm very excited for that to come in!! Along with 2 prs of leggins for E & a tee for M, since they have the largest size online (and seemingly never in store).

    ReplyDelete
  53. I sent an e-mail to the general customer service e-mail this morning about my order - and I was reminded that EXTRA20 small language says it won't apply to past orders, but that she was happy to do it this time. Then was told "I'm sorry we will be unable to offer this courtesy in the future."

OK, uhm, thanks! I mean, I'm glad I was able to get it - but it's a courtesy a lot of other retailers will offer you, especially if within days. I have yet to experience any of the glowing JCrew customer service...

    ReplyDelete
  54. math teacher,
I have never gotten the extra % off promo items. Always been told no when I asked for about the past 6 months so I quit asking....

    ReplyDelete
  55. HeidiG - My PS told me that the stores don't carry Crewcuts 14 (at least for girls) in the stores, unless it's a direct return. Not sure how true this is (I have never been able to find them myself), but I was surprised to hear this!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I placed a mondo order a few days ago - all sale items. I emailed today to see if they would honor the additional 20% off and wave the shipping since the order was well over $150 but no dice. I just don't understand. Just about every other establishment will do a price adjustment in a reasonable amount of time. The order just shipped. I'm contemplating just returning the whole lot. Or at least seeing if they will honor the 20% in the store? Does anyone know if they do that? I know that the stores and catalog often do not go by the same codes which I also find strange.

    ReplyDelete

  58. I ordered both the lipstick gold foil pencil skirt and the watercolor pencil skirt last week. When I called and asked for a price adjustment this morning, I was told flat out - no! I explained that I would just be returning the items then and re-ordering. To which the CS rep said: "If that's what you wish to do." LOL

    ReplyDelete
  59. After getting back on their website, I discovered that all the items I ordered were still in stock in my size. I reordered them again, this time with the discount code and free shipping, I saved over $70!! The items from my original order, minus the discount code, are going back.

    J. Crew may have made leaps and bounds in terms of style and visibility, but their customer service is seriously lacking. I know they have to draw the line somewhere, but not honoring a price adjustment within a week of purchase just seems like bad business.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh my, reordering several items now that they have the extra %!!!

Stopped by the store to check out the new items...Most items run big!! So disappointed. I saw a cute madras shirt. Can't find it online...I'm considering buying it. Anyone has seen it at the store? Any ideas about it?

    ReplyDelete
  61. @ Alexis: I sent CS an email and all I got for those wrong items was "allowing" me to return them (one was final sale). I am seriously sick and tired of wasting my time calling CS for wrong, defective, and damaged items.

@ Paige: I'm glad you were able to re-order the skirts. Last winter I placed an order for two items that popped back and guess what that same day I received an email for extra % off (I had placed the order just 3 hrs shy of the email). I called that evening for an adjustment and the CS refused to give it to me. I had to speak to her supervisor and after over 30 mins of going back and forth they gave me the discount for "one time courtesy." Heck I didn't even ask for free shipping cause my order just came under $150. It still makes me angry thinking about that day. >:-/

    ReplyDelete
  62. stella,
I have been given that line before as well when I said what you said to CS and that was way back in 2007. So their "service" is still the same. Poor.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I am very thankful that I can't find anything, otherwise I'd spend. I think I may take a JCrew-spending hiatus for the summer...I need to look forward to fall.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Genny, I know I've been able to get the extra % of promo items within the last 6 months. I generally order online and the amount comes off. I think if the item shows up in the sale area which states the % off, then they should honor it. It's probably a new rule - they love to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I just did a mock order, and it took 20% off the skimmers and the philo top which are on promo. Maybe the 20% doesn't get the promo b/c they're Timex? It wouldn't be the first time a cs had wrong info. :)

    ReplyDelete
  66. Does anyone know if the linen-cotton soft v-neck tees are on sale in-store? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  67. Received my rewards card in the mail today!

    ReplyDelete
  68. NEWYORK0311 --

I saw the madras shirt in the store today. It is very cute and reminiscent of "old" J.Crew. Preppy. The colors are sort of based on a washed navy. It is really cute.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Re.: price adjustments for sale items, I wouldn't have as much of a problem if the item I had ordered was not available at the extra percentage off or if we were talking two weeks going by. But c'mon, I have to re-order something that is shipping out from a mail order center and then get in the car and waste gas and time to return the *exact, same* items? That is just so illogical. It takes two seconds for a CS agent to check whether or not the item is in stock still...

I know GAP has a FS policy too...as well as a good, seven-day price adjustment policy. But the other thing is that GAP doesn't put their items on an additional 20% off when it's already sitting in the sale section. Unless it's a well documented promo, in my experience, once it hits the sale section, it stays that price for awhile.

To add to the confusion, I once called my local B&M to confirm their closing time and made mention of how I was coming in to return something that I would have to re-order online (due to additional markdown and free shipping). The SA said, "Oh you don't have to do that - just come in and we'll do the price adjustment for you." Well, yay! for the SA who actually understands customer service but boo for JC for actively discouraging SAs from doing this on a routine basis. I suspect the reasoning is that the online group is "different" from the B&M group.

I am curious if it would be worthwhile in investing in a relationship with an online PS. I have a very nice PS at my local store, but honestly, I can't get out very often with two little ones at a DH who constantly travels. I know that this person would still tow the company line, but perhaps it would be easier to explain the whole "I-know-you-still-have-stock-and-I-just-ordered-72-hours-ago-do-I-really-need-to-reorder" argument...At least there would be some consistency...

    ReplyDelete
  70. P.S. Okay, I'm just going to r-e-l-a-x and let this go LOL! :D Bad customer service gets my dander up because I was in sales BC ("before children")...taking a chill-pill...!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Jenny - thanks for the cc info - I always wondered if they just sold out or if they just weren't carried. Good to know!!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Jcrew1985: Thanks for your comments! I thought the madras shirt is very cute too and more importantly, so comfortable! I picture myself wearing on the weekends, away at the beach!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. I'm forcing myself to exercise some restraint because a Sephora just opened in my local mall and I blew all my shopping $$ for the month there! Also, I'm pretty tired of the same old sale items.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I just came back from the B&M store and no additional % off there! Oh well!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I placed a huge order 5 days ago, but mostly full priced items from the new rollout. I am not even going to bother asking for a price adjustment on the few sale items I ordered. I have never had any luck with them. I used a free ship code, which saved me some money.

Truthfully this promotion didn't tempt me much, I have what I wanted from past promos. Now I'm waiting for the May rollout!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'm with audball - the no price adjustment thing gets me riled up (btw, audball, do we know each other from yahoo groups? LOL!) - anyway, I ended up buying a bunch of stuff from this promo because I've picked up many things in the past couple of weeks that are sitting in my closet NWT's that I can return at the higher price. It's a *slight* inconvenience to me but it saves me a good amount of $$.

    ReplyDelete
  77. jcrewphd: I can't believe that was all they offered. :( They could have been a bit more generous considering the amount of times they messed up.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Hexicon, the same thing happened to me when the local Sephora opened! It really is Mecca at the mall.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Suzy: I thought the watchstraps could get the Extra20 off. Good to know that you were able to. :)

    ReplyDelete
  80. I'm late in joining this thread, but I have to put in a pitch for the Grommet Parlour Purse in Rosy Peach! It is fabulous. Another JCA reviewed the Parlour Hobo in the same color and loved theirs as well. Beautiful leather, the purse is the perfect size.

I'm baffled that it has been in the Sale area for WEEKS, unless they just made a ton of them?

If you are looking for a great Spring/Summer bag, consider this!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I went to the store to see if it had the % off-- no!-- but did see some items in sale that were cheaper than online. One is the pastel petal perfect shirt, 29.99, which I got but am undecided about since it's a bit sheer. The Caprice jacket is 49.99, by the way. I'd tried it on earlier and wasn't a fan.

I may wait for the thicket floral perfect shirt to go on sale, as I like the colors better and it's not sheer. Also, I took the dizzy floral perfect shirt off my list-- the color is "neon orange" and they aren't kidding! It's like a highlighter. Too bad it doesn't come in other colors.

    ReplyDelete
  82. In my shirts hunt today, I didn't see the other thing on my list-- the wildflower tunic top. No wonder; it's online/catalogue only. Anyone has it and can comment on it?
