J.Crew Email: The statement piece of the season (plus, FREE SHIPPING)

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Dina & Marietta, who shared with us the latest email from J.Crew this morning.

The email above features the Crystal Devoté Necklace (Item 23752; $150.00). J.Crew describes the statement necklace as:
One of our favorites of the season, with a multitextured mix of metal meets glass (and a touch of delicate silk ribbon thrown in for good measure). Finished with a golden fireburst of hand-set Czech rhinestones, it's the one that gets you compliments every time. Hand-set Czech rhinestones on a light antiqued steel chain with 18K gold-plated metal castings. Hand-knotted smooth and faceted beads with silk ribbon. Signature spring clasp closure.
I am feeling "meh" on the overall design of the Crystal Devoté Necklace. I like the two star-bursts & the main chain, but the additional ribbon & beads seem "too much". I would love to see this necklace without the additions. Or the starbursts on a single or double beaded necklace. But that is just me. ;)

J.Crew has some of the loveliest *simple* necklaces at their brick & mortar (B&M) stores. Like the single strand chain with randomly placed pearls and stones for less than $40. I would love to see those get featured. :)

J.Crew is also offering customers free shipping on purchases of $150+ with promo code SHIP150. This offer expires 2/24/10.

What are your thoughts on the necklace? Do you like the design? Will you be taking advantage of this free shipping promotion?

  1. I don't know about the rest of you lovely ladies out there, but I miss the days of the gorgeous pave critter necklaces and the multi strand beaded necklaces.

JC's recent collections look like a bunch of "hot messes" with tangled chains, random placements of ribbon, and big baubles.

I know this style is in trend right now, but for $150, I like a piece that I can wear for a few years and doesn't look like I dug it out of the bargain bin at Forever 21.

  2. I need a free shipping code for orders > $100

  3. Lisa: I totally know what you mean! The critter necklaces and strand beaded necklaces are lovely! I don't know why J.Crew doesn't bring back more of those great accessories in addition to their new designs. :)

  4. Lisa: ITA!

I liked the simple bead bracelets w/ the critters! i wish those would come back! Or even just simple necklaces w/ pendants!

And of course the FS code is going to expire when the new arrivals get online!

  5. "Hot mess" is a good description. There's too much going on with that necklace.

  6. I don't hate it, but I agree with you Alexis that the ribbon "stuff" is too much. And I prefer some symmetry in my necklaces and wish the starbursts were the same size.

  7. I adore the Duchess, Majesty, and Supernova collections. This necklace would be OK if it were scaled down a bit and maybe not in gold. I do like the sparkly starburst...reminds me of my aunt's old jewelry from the '50s.

I may take advantage of the promotion to purchase the Crystal glamour and symphony bracelets and pearl and ribbon necklace (I've been eyeing that too Alexis!!).

  8. I agree with you Lisa. I miss the days of pave critter pieces. Seriously for the price point it is much too trendy for me to invest in it.

I do not like much of the new jewelry collection since they are over the top for me for daily wear. A lot of the pieces with ribbon, you can see it fraying especially when they have been tried on at the store. I would love to see more classic style besides the pearls offered in collection.

  9. i agree with everyone on the haphazard necklaces of late. the majesty, crystal, pearl, and libretto styles are much more long-lasting. i purchased the colletto in petrol and plan to wear it for years ahead. not so much on the other strands of crazy.

  10. Agree with Lisa. I think JCrew should move towards Hermes faux jewelry, with beautiful enamel pieces that are classy, not cheap looking. JCrew jewelry makes me laugh now. And the prices...? You got to be kiddin' me...

  11. I could never pull this off, it's just too much.

Has anyone seen the new arrivals in the B&M today? Curious if they are actually out on the floor and what people think of the latest releases.

  12. Slightly OT, hopefully a JCA can help me: I bought a statement necklace from a few seasons ago on eBay; it arrived today and I know it is not authentic J.Crew. How do I go about getting my money back? Do I email the seller to say I am not happy with the quality of the item, or that I suspect it is a fake? Contact eBay first? Thanks for any help that you can provide!

  13. I like the necklace, but not enough to ever buy it. Even on sale. Agreed about the ribbon, might have some potential without it.

  14. Denise, contact the seller first and see if they will let you return the item. If not then you can raise a dispute with paypal and the seller has a certain amount of time to respond. If they don't respond I think paypal reviews the dispute and makes a decision. You should check out the dispute resolution center on paypal for details.

    Good luck.

  15. Fall 09 had lots of lovely peices and I went a little Crewzy on the jewelry. The peices that came out of the Dec/Jan/Feb rollouts are just over the top. Simple is good and the designers should just keep it simple. They should also stay away from uneven and aysemetrical peices as well.

  16. OT -- The extra 40% off clearance items continues at Loft as of today. I did a post on some items here.

  17. No new arrivals in the Portland, Oregon store :(
The clerk said they were arriving tomorrow for display on Wednesday. No new catalogs, either. Lots of canvas totes and the wool waterfloral scarves, though.

  18. I just looked at the Talbots catalog and saw lots of necklaces I like. Not so much at JCrew...

  19. I've seen this necklace IRL and it's just meh for me. As for the fs, I won't be using it. I will be visiting my b&m this weekend to see new items, though. Can't buy too much since I just got my car worked on and it cost more than I thought. :(
OT - I got my order today. I hate, and I mean hate, the textured jersey floral spatter tee. It don't like the fit, I don't like the pattern, I don't like the sparkle. It's just not for me. It looks great online, though, and on those who've modeled it on their blogs. I do love the skimmer in violet dust! Love! I have several tops that I can wear with it - now it needs to warm up so I can wear them! I also got the skimmer in soft terracotta and the color is just okay. I will be returning the tee and the soft terracotta. I would repurchase the soft terracotta if it goes on super sale.

  20. OT: went to my b&m today and picked up some new items that I haven't seen online yet (haven't received a catalog yet so idk what they are). not too crazy about most of the things online, but IRL not too bad!

    ReplyDelete
  21. math teacher, what didn't you like about the fit of the floral spatter t?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Cass, I sized up and it was still tight. Plus it is much longer than other JC tees. It clung to all the wrong things - just wrong on my body shape. It fit me like older perfect fit tees. This year's perfect fit cascade tee (not sure if that's the right name but too lazy to look it up) fit well even sized up.

  23. I'm with you, Alexis. My first thought when I saw this was "I could get with this necklace for sure if it was just the starbursts!" Taken together, it's all too much -- and of course the price is insane for something that's not even made of a precious metal. JMO of course.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Also, it's got to be close to the end for these tangly mess necklaces...right?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Denise, 99% of the time in cases like this, paypal will settle in favor of the buyer. I have to say that for all its faults, eBay has come a long way in protesting buyers from fraud. Of course if you're a seller, it makes it that much harder to prove you're not trying to scam anyone, but hopefully that doesn't happen much.

  26. Hello Everyone! I made a trip to my J.Crew to see the new arrivals today. I picked up a new catalog which I scanned and have posted on my blog. :)

  27. Forgot to mention that the Men's section is also included. :)

  28. Hi, all. I love the necklace. In the clear or crystal color. Not the black (I think the contrast is too jarring).

The ribbon in my necklace will probably be clipped out next year. I kind of like it for now, but when the fad passes, I will snip-snip and have a necklace I still will love.

I am always willing to give these oddball things a chance...so with that said, I have posted a "preview pic" of me wearing the necklace--review will be tomorrow--in my latest blog post (the post is actually on Johnnie B., the junior sized off-shoot of Boden). So if you are curious for IRL of this necklace, here is the link (have no idea if this will copy correctly).

  30. My B&M had the majority of their shipment out when I went in this afternoon. There were many, many new tees with neon colors, flowers, etc. Several new dresses, including a strapless dress in the Peonies print (which I purchased). I tried on the Peonies pencil skirt but passed on it because the weight of the fabric just seemed too *heavy* for the color and print to me. I cancelled my pre-order for the Peonies cardigan after seeing it IRL...not what I expected and not flattering on me at all. I did get the Zebra mini, which wasn't as short as I had expected it would be AND it has pockets...SO adorable! I tried on a black version of the Zebra dress (they're called the Blakely, if I remember correctly) and the fit is very cute. The front gapes badly so be prepared to pin it or invest in some fashion tape. ;)

I'll be posting some RL pics of a bunch of the new arrivals on my blog tomorrow (instead of my regular Tuesday post). :)

  31. 20% off all Tees & Knits! This was posted on the J. Crew website sometime this evening.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Came over to echo crew cricket. I haven't looked yet, but I bet it doesn't include my coveted zebra tunic...

    ReplyDelete
  33. ....except the promo isn't active yet. Just tried a mock checkout and tees and knits came up full price. And the tunic isn't a tee or knit, natch

  34. Good Morning Everyone! I wanted to let you know that the entire catalog is now uploaded with much clearer pictures so that you can read the item details on each page. :)

  35. The necklace looks tacky and cheap. I would never wear it. I like statement necklaces but not gaudy ones! Yikes! This will also be one of those trends we look back on and laugh at 10 years from now. Maybe a $10 or $15 knock off but this price is riduculous for costume jewelry unless you have money to burn:O

  36. xoxo and Elaine,

Thanks for your helpful advice. I've sent a message to the seller asking for a full refund - hopefully we can resolve this amicably. I noticed in the seller's history from 6+ months ago that he/she had other complaints from buyers for fake J.Crew jewelry.
