  1. I think the guys got a more detailed preview than we did :) But congrats to the guys, it really looks like JC is stepping up their game!

  2. I noticed on one of the models she has big hair in the 1st pic, that is one 80 trend I do not want to go back to!

  3. I'm *hoping* beyond hope that all these photo shoots are like the runway shows - all crazy-whacked out SUPER out-there looks that will, at some point, be refined for public consumption. I hope. I mean really. (When, oh when will the skinny pant trend finally die?) On the upside, I see less ruffles. :)

  4. It seems to be the 80's all over again with the leggings and oversized slouchy tops. Nope. Not going there again. I wore leggings in the past and about died when I saw them on the JCRew website...

  5. Off subject, but had to mention the major issues I have had with my last four orders.

Order #1 - wrong item shipped (correct item no longer available)
Order #2 - item missing (item no longer available)
Order #3 - item missing (item no longer available)
    Order #4 - damaged item

This is getting a bit ridiculous.

  6. The men's line keeps humming along doing a great job. Not revolutionary, but more evolutionary. I continue to really like the direction they are going.

  7. Boy does the men's line consistently look great to me. I of course enjoy having more selection on the wos' side, but sometimes, having fewer items means better editing, many fewer derivative items that lack quality. (When I browse the website, I tend to have the old Adam Sandler SNL song stuck in my head, Lunchlady Land, but the words I hum are "Ruffles and flowers, ruffles and flowers, antler tee, antler tee, eat a meatball sandwich..." I also hope that underneath the wacked out runway styling that there's gorgeous, wearable clothes that have no eighties affiliation! Sometimes the styling is just a dodge to camouflage bland or ill-fitting garments, so we'll see. Thanks for all the peeks!

  8. I like what Jenna says about more freedom in fashion--i.e. pairing high heels or sequins with casual clothes. It's a great aesthetic. But then I look at the catalog and just can't imagine wearing a sequined sweatshirt to pick up my son from school.

  9. "Borrowing slouchy pieces from a boyfriend's closet."..."Ruffled floral skirts paired with camouflage jackets, sequins and denim and lots of layers of bling" ... "washed out colors" ... in other words, more of the same.

  10. The Men's preview looks fantastic...wish I could say the same for the Women's line. Count me in with RatsOnParade and CheesyGoodness in hoping that underneath the wacky styling there are some really fabulous wearable pieces for normal everyday life. :)

  11. While the men's line looks nice at first glance, some of those pants are *pretty-darn-tight* and the sweaters appear to have shrunk in length. And the cutoff painted chino shorts? Can't wait to see the outrageous price for these one of a kind collector's items. LOL

Not going crazy about the women's line so much either. Hey, are those boat shoes for women? J.Crew is definitely bringing 80's back.

  12. Thanks J. Crew Guy & Alexis!

I don't mind the concept styling being wacky but I hope we get more down-to-earth ideas of paring the clothes. Since the latest catalog, Polyvore is my go-to source for how to wear a piece. I miss the previous catalog combinations that J Crew used to present and made me want to buy more clothes. I'm shopping my closet and looking at other stores more than ever. Not a bad thing, just miss my one-stop-never-look-back days at J. Crew....

  13. Oh, that skirt on the second gal is divine! Even though I know they're styling the models in a really distinctive way, I like that for the most part, the clothing is still wearable, once you look at each item separately. I've always loved how J. Crew pieces play nicely with anything in one's wardrobe.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I like that striped skirt and hope it makes it to production.

Overall, I think the outfits just look shrunken, dingy and like the girls just threw on whatever was in their closet.

  15. OT - for those who get the free shipping when they log into their account, how do they know when that offer ends? I seem to recall some people saying it was valid until a certain date but on my account it says it is for today.

  16. Eesh. Some points:

    GUYS
I like the guys collection...sort of. Am very much over the 80s/white jeans look and I hate (hate!) those losely constructed suede shoe disasters that they are pushing on the male models - weren't those from last year, anyway? I hope they're not trying to make it a classic.

What's with the overly short pants? How am I supposed to take a man seriously in those?

Some of the outfits are uncomfortably preppy/yachty, as one of the blog commentators pointed out. I like the reference to the New England/prep J. Crew heritage, but let's not be sarcastic about it, shall we?

Love the shawl collar cardigans. Major heartage.

Nice use of the token black model. Try harder.

As another JCA commentator said in an earlier thread, I really wish they would fire Jenna, or at least put her in rhinestone and ruffle rehab. I am not a fan of where she's going. Her casual/trendy tendencies were fun and fresh when J. Crew was still a majority office wear, formal, and high quality venue. It gave officewear edge and made it sexy. I liked it. But it looks like she's taking that casual/trendy vibe and making it J. Crew's bread and butter and simultaneously cutting down on quality (but then again, do you really want items like the silky harem pants lasting more than a season?). Bad idea if you want to maintain your loyal customer base.

But then again, if J. Crew feels it can make more money selling tissue to tweens, keep her. As a customer with a penchant for well-priced quality and possessing full faith in capitalism, I'm sure J. Crew's competitors will step up to the plate any day now. It does still sadden me to watch the wasting death of an institution, though.

  17. I agree with Crew Cricket about down-to-earth styles. I mean sequins are great, I love things that sparkle and shine as much as any girl, but do they really expect me to wear sequins to work? It's not going to happen. I don't think anyone wants to see sequin pumps at 8 AM, no matter how cool Jenna thinks it looks.

    ReplyDelete
  18. When I look at the pic I wonder if JC is trying to change their demographic group? It looks like to me they are narrowing their appeal to a much younger group than previous seasons.

  19. I'm with casual-crew about the big '80's hair -- oh no, deliver us! I agree that the upcoming spring line for men looks wonderful -- classic with a bit of an edge. Spring for women looks slouchy and rather bland. I didn't see a single piece that I MUST have. Darn. Like Crew Cricket, I am relying more and more on Polyvore for style ideas. I also love the blogs, Wardrobe Review and Bigger Closet, where I always get great ideas for outfits and color combinations. :-)

  20. To xoxo: the free shippin when you log into your account ends just before Thanksgiving (I think).

  21. OT: I think someone was asking about the Duffle Coat. I just received it in camel. I think it might go back. There are a few weird inconsistencies in the wool. I also think they should have chosen a hood OR a collar because with both it looks quite overwhelming. It's definitely warmer than the Crosby coat, but aesthetically I don't really like it. Oh well.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hi Sheil, Aesthetically, you would keep the Crosby Coat though, right? I'm waiting for it now and I did go up a size so it's loose fitting over sweaters.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Laura: Yeah I kept the Crosby. I definitely like that one. I also feel it is just better quality overall.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yay, thanks, I debate getting the white one too, I've never had a white coat but I'm afraid it would just get dirty.

    ReplyDelete
  25. OT: the defective items are getting out of control that I am receiving 2/4 beaded/embellished tees I just ordered are defective with stains or crooked work!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Lauren, thanks for the info. Does that mean that people are randomly (I assume) getting FS from J.Crew for one day and the random promotion ends just before Thanksgiving? Or that once you have FS you will have it until the promo ends? Or does anybody really know? I guess I will find out tomorrow if it is still there when I log into my account. So tempting to place another order today but I really shouldn't. But I have free shipping and a 20% promo. But I really shouldn't...

  27. PS,
I ordered another Chimera jacket for my sister. Same size and color. The one I received was nicely package with bubble wrap over the ruffle and stuffing in the arm holes. The one I got for her came with none of the above! What a difference!

  28. i really like the previews and am getting really excited for spring (oh no, and it's still november!)

true, i am younger than most of you. i was born in 1989 so the messy hair and skinny pants don't scream "80's" to me. i appreciate being able to roll out of bed and not having to do much with my hair. i appreciate being able to pull on pants that i can wear literally anything with and still feel streamlined. compared to the huge-flare jeans and questionable hair trends of *my* youth, it feels fun and modern to me, not dated.

i understand not all of you are as excited, and i understand that a lot of these looks are not super-appropriate for conservative offices, etc. but that doesn't mean that *everyone* uniformly hates it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. another thought: J. Crew is my go-to retailer right now because I think they are doing youthfulness right (online, anyway. I still hate the stores in-person, as they skew more conservative). Other mass options for my age are Urban Outfitters (MUCH too trendy); Anthropologie (too frilly); American Apparel (great for basics, but not much else), Gap (boring), H&M (hit or miss) etc. I think J Crew is doing a good job of filling a niche.

I would be interested in Madewell, but I think their price points are too high for what they produce (basically a more refined Urban Outfitters). Also there is no store in Chicago yet.

  30. OT- i totally agree w/ all of you that have been getting defective merchandise! i just received a metallic lexi clutch in turquoise and it looks absolutely HORRIBLE!! it looks like someone rubbed all the metallic off of it, scratched it, and then ran over it w/ a car. what kind of quality is that?! im so disappointed!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Looking at these images I am very disappointed. I miss the JCrew of old where quality was pretty much guaranteed and receiving defective items was a rarity not an almost every order occurence.

I prefer classic tailored pieces with a bit of flare that will last a long time.

This trendy new JCrew is not for me at all. I also buy trendy items at lower price points than JCrew is offereing.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ashley, Yes, I agree. Sorry about your item.

The ruffle on the second Chimera for my sister is really flat too. The one I got myself is really full and fluffy and gorgeous. I think hers will have to go back b/c once she sees mine she won't want hers!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. JKW, I second your thoughts! I love having all the great blogs where I can see these items being styled in realistic ways. The catalogs, while beautiful, have not been helpful with styling ideas lately. I love Wardbrobe Review and A Bigger Closet as you mentioned, plus Gigi's Gone Shopping, the Chloe Conspiracy, I Love J.Crew...and plenty more. Also worth noting is that I found all those blogs through this one. Thanks to all you ladies who give me great styling ideas. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh FFM too, who helped me discover Polyvore.

    ReplyDelete
  35. ashley: Sorry to hear about your parcel, how can JC send it out to you that way without checking it first?

I hate to say this the only way JC is going to improve their quality is when people stop buying their product and they will be forced to improve their merch. They have such a following this probably will not happen.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I am excited to see what is next for jcrew, they always come out with gorgeous pieces even if they do over-style them!:)

    ReplyDelete
  37. that little dress/skirt looks fantastic. yay!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I just want to say that until this week, I believed JC had the most abominable CS of any company I do business with - but CB2 just lost (lost!) three of four defective tables I recently returned to them, and are refusing to refund them, even though I have the proof of a professional UPS pack/ship employee that they were shipped together (literally all in the same box). Now that takes the cake.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Rae, see if your credit card company will credit you back anyway. I'm pretty sure Amex at least has some sort of return protection service. Also ask to speak to the manager at CB2 and tell them you plan to report them to BBB and the atty general of your state for unfair business practices. That might get them to do something.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thanks, Cass, for the ideas. I was floored.
