Item 17372
Regular: $78.00; now $59.99

J.Crew's item page states:
Scattered dogwood stems add sweetness to a style designed with impeccable detail and fit. It's everything we love in classic haberdashery—with a perfect point collar and button-down front placket. Specially washed for softness. Tailored fit—we've placed waist and bust darts just so to create our most-fitted, feminine silhouette yet. Cotton/silk. Long sleeves. Import. Machine wash.
Well, all I can say is well-played J.Crew! Well-played! In my opinion, this shirt is one of J.Crew's best designs in awhile.

To start, I love the shirt's shade of hazel blue. The color online is very much true to the color in-person. The dogwood stem design only adds to the delicate beauty of this shirt. It will transition very well from season to season.

The material of the shirt is the most wonderful composite of cotton and silk– smooth & silky to the touch. Moreover, the fabric of the shirt is very light, creating an aerie feel. It is a bit sheer– so a shirt, tank, cami, or the like should be worn underneath. Unless you are going for a more risque look. ;) Also worth mentioning, this shirt is machine washable. I know this last part is a bit boring, but lately all of the items I have been purchasing from J.Crew have some sort of washing restriction (i.e. dry clean only). So it's nice to see an item I can wash myself. ;)

The style of the shirt is very fitting. The bust darts in the front and the waist darts in the back provides a polished and tailored look. The shirt also hits low at the hip, giving me the choice to easily tuck in the shirt if I so desire to. I am normally a size 2 in tops at J.Crew, but the past year I have been going down a size (hello vanity sizing!) For this top, I went with a size 0 & that worked out well for me.

This shirt is still available in brick & mortar (B&M) stores. Although, I suspect most of these shirts will soon be sent back to the J.Crew distribution center for their online sale section. (Which is how I got my shirt. I stalked the item page for days until my size came up.) Overall, I highly recommend this shirt– it's a lovely piece to add to your wardrobe.

What are your thoughts on the Tiny-Buds Perfect Shirt? Do you "love it" or would you "leave it"? Have you seen this shirt in-person? If so, please share with us your review. :)

  1. I have been in love with this shirt since the moment I saw it on the website :) It has that romantic vintage-y feel to it which I love and reminds me of some of the old Liberty prints J.Crew used to do. I ordered it this morning from the sale section -- there was only a 6 left and I was a little hesitant since I can sometimes need an 8 to prevent gaping at the bust, but it is so comforting to hear that you could size down in this Alexis! Thank you for the lovely review -- I am now even more excited to receive my shirt!

  2. JC makes really nice fitting button down shirts...thus "perfect shirts!"

I haven't seen this Tiny-buds shirt IRL, but looks really cute.
I'm going to have to hope for a pop back. :-)

  3. I also loved this shirt from the beginning, I have read comments elsewhere that it was a little sheer so that stopped me from ordering it.

  4. Thanks, Alexis! I had been considering ordering this shirt and your additional info really helps. And I always love info on washing directions, my dry cleaning bill is astronomical!

  5. Agree with casual-crew--I would not order it b/c of the sheerness. I don't like having to wear a cami underneath many of JCrew's items. It just gets old after a while. I look for medium to heavier weight shirts of even lighter weight ones that are not sheer and I have found several ones out there that fit me and my lifestyle better.

  6. PS If it ever went down to $19.99 then it might be mine:) but for the current price not worth it IMO.

  7. I have this shirt and love it for all the reasons Alexis pointed out. The only difference is that I don't find it to be so sheer I need to wear a cami. I went with my usual size 4 and that fits me well, nice relaxed-but-tailored shape; if I sized down there would definitely be some gaping at the bust. I find that when I wear a beige or nude bra under this shirt you cannot see anything through it. Since the material is pretty thin, I suspect the no-show-through is because the fit is loose enough on me (if that makes sense).

  8. I also have this shirt and even though I paid full price for it, it was so worth it! I agree that the fabric is great and LOVE that it is machine washable!

  9. have it and love it-I rock it with skinny black J Brand jeans, skinny ON Black scarf, white tank, and black pointy flats or black boots with the jeans tucked in. It's so versatile!!!

  10. I've been stalking this shirt for months; I was overseas for a while and just moved to NYC at the beginning of October. This shirt is not in any of the NYC stores! (I called all of them.) My "home" store in TX would probably have it, but I'm reluctant to pay shipping.

Thanks for the review-- I'm waiting for the pop-back online!

  11. PS goldenmeans - I have a Liberty-print J. Crew shirt from about 2-3 years ago that is the grandmother of this shirt: it's a darker blue with little white flowers. No wonder I love the tiny buds shirt so much-- I think I bought the Liberty-print one at full price because I couldn't imagine my life without it.

  12. I was lucky enough to get this shirt last week during a pop back, and I love it! Like Alexis said, the color is beautiful, and the print is fantastic.... definitely one of their better pieces this year. :-)

OT - for those of you with a BR account, be on the lookout for their 10 year anniversary email, with a special mystery gift! I received $25 off any purchase.

  13. I like some of the Liberty and Liberty-style prints that J.Crew does, but this one is too "Little House on the Prairie" for me. (I think I was traumatized by too much calico during childhood.)

But I'm glad you found something you liked, and it was on sale. Enjoy!

  14. Hello hello! Congrats to all those who got this lovely little top as well. :) I am happy to hear that those who own the shirt, have been pleased with it as well. :)

  15. I have this too and love it. The color is gorgeous. I didn't think I liked the lightweight material at first but find it's perfect for layering.

  16. Audrey, the few stores I checked on LI did not carry this shirt either and at least now I know it wouldn't have helped if I took a trip into the city. In fact, the saleswoman who was helping me (about a month ago) had no idea about the shirt, even when I showed her the catalog. Maybe they thought it wasn't a NYC-type style?

I've been stalking the website for my size (0/2) to pop back since then. Thanks Alexis for the review. I would have been reluctant to order final sale otherwise!

  17. I love the print but don't like the cotton/silk material. Also don't like sheerness. I prefer the more substantial material of the slim stretch shirt. Agree with Summer that it is not worth more than $19.99.

  18. Thanks for the review! That fabric is pretty, and I love silk/cotton blends, they do wash well. I don't buy this style of shirt often, and only at a good sale price from JC, since I always have to stitch between the second and third buttons to prevent gaping, then do the over the head shimmy to get it on. They fit great after that! I agree about the slim stretch, they're a nice fit but I only ever find them in the 3/4 sleeve. I've gotten a few long sleeve shirts at the Gap, which I don't automatically have to stitch closed, but the fabrics aren't as good as JC's. For some reason, I spent years looking off and on for the perfect, non-stitch white oxford, but I hardly ever wear that style anyway. (Pointless crewsade, I guess.)
