J.Crew's Jackets & Outerwear {how's the fit?}

In this week's "Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?" post, many of you, including Fluffles, Anon at 9:09 PM, Anon at 9:31 PM, Anon at 9:38 PM, JaneEsq, Anon at 9:45 PM, & Cleo26, mentioned the issue of fit when it comes to J.Crew's recent jackets and outerwear.

In particular, many of the jackets and coats had "a too boxy" cut. Fluffles said it best with the following: "Either the shoulders fit alright but the waistline is far too large (cf. the teepee comment!) or have a jacket be quite tight in the shoulders and only a slightly smaller waist (which is still too large sizing down)". I could not agree with her comment more when it comes to a few of J.Crew's jackets this season. I missed the more tailored look for jackets from previous seasons (e.g. Bella, Lexington), as they were easier to determine one's proper size.

So, I thought it might be helpful to have a post where we could quickly review a few jackets we own or have tried on, in terms of size & fit. :)

For me, I am a normally a size 0-2 in jackets. I felt in previous seasons, the size 2 fit me best. This season, the size 0 more often than not was a better fit. The following are some quick notes of size/ fit:
  • Wool-Cashmere Harriet Coat (Item 99222): had to size down (went with size 0); the shoulders were fine, the body of the coat was still loose, but the belt helped cinch extra fabric in
  • Metallic Giraffe Day Coat (Item 96171): true to size (went with a size 2); the body of the coat is loose, the shoulders are narrow
  • Berry-trim Astrid jacket (Item 96309): had to size down (went with size 0); the shoulders are a bit snug, but it made the body of the jacket more tailored; incidentally the jackets looks tailored in the front, but a bit boxy from the side
  • Herringbone Fiona jacket (Item 96553): had to size down (went with size 0); shoulders and arms are a bit snug, but the body of the jacket isn't as loose as the size 2 (but still loose)
How was the size & fit of some jackets (and/or coats) you have tried on? Would you size up or down? Was the fit boxy or tailored? Do you prefer a certain fit for the upcoming season (e.g. boxy, tailored)?

  1. I mentioned the fit of J.Crew jackets being rather tight in the shoulders and wider in the bodice. I've come to believe that while i do have somewhat broad shoulders, the overall style of J.Crew jackets is to have a narrow shoulder fit. I haven't this issue with any other designer or retailer. Also, i am convinced that there is some pinning going on in the photos online. :)

Typically, in suiting i wear a 2 and in jackets a 4. Of the jackets i've purchased this year -- golden roses jacket, cascading flower Astrid, corduroy peplum jacket, daisy eyelet jacket, Greta, and Penny, only the jacquard Fiona i kept in a 2. I tried the popular Maggie and would have needed a 4, but then it would have looked too boxy.

I really hope J.Crew will "loosen up" on the shoulders. I think this will minimize the boxiness affect. I can live with a tighter waist, but any constriction in the shoulders makes me feel that i can't move, or breathe for that matter. ;)

  2. Cleo26: That is an excellent point about the "pinning" of jackets in their catalog/ online photos. I have noticed a few jackets looking tailored on J.Crew's website, only to notice how boxy they really are in-person.

I am not a big fan of pinning, since I can't always visit a store to see the item in person. :)

  3. Cleo26: I couldn't agree more! I believe all catalog shoots "adjust" the clothing on the models to make it look more presentable. Unfortunately, it can be a little misleading to the cusstomer in terms of the actual shape/fit of the jacket or item. I have had to size down in JC jackets the last two years. The shoulders/arms end up being slight snug (but not too bothersome), but this way the body is more fitted and not boxy. Hopefully, JC will begin to loosen up the shoulders this spring/summer.

  4. O/T: Banana Republic reduced their sale prices again. There are a few bargains to be had out there, especially if you are a LUXE card holder and can get free shipping.

  5. Velvet Ecole Jacket I would size up if wearing anything other than a cotton t-shirt underneath.
    Wool Harriet coat, size down...HUGE!
    Wool lady day coat, TTS
I did try on a astrid jacket in wool at a B&M the other day. Felt TTS, very boxy.
I do have broad shoulders and a smaller waist, the fit for me is hit or miss..

  6. OT - for those that were looking for the Double Serge pencil skirt in bronzed ochre in size 2, there are 2 listed online for $79.99. Good luck!

  7. I'm the one with the original teepee comment, made about the penny boucle jacket I ended up sending back because by the time it fit me in the shoulders, the rest of it billowed out like a tent. Very dissappointing.

I've found that many of J.Crew's jackets this season are boxy, unlike last year's Bella jacket, which I found nicely fitted. I tried on the herringbone Fiona from this fall, and it was just such an unappealing fit because of it's boxiness. I also dislike the droopy flower astrid for the same reason, and I suspect its boxiness is part of the reason for the dramatic discount (I mean, the flower can just be removed or re-pinned, but the fit of the jacket is what it is).

  8. Oh, and I totally believe the penny jacket is pinned on the J.Crew models .... great point, Cleo26.

  9. Just to underscore the other comments, I agree about the pinning and boxy fits. Until this year, in fifteen years of shopping J.Crew I've never had to send back an item for fit reasons. This year, I've sent back almost a dozen. Part of this is due to the vanity sizing (I'm suddenly a 4 after being a 6 for years), part to the inconsistent sizing (in some items I had to order 4, 6, and 6P to determine which one fit), and part to pinning.

For example, I realize that Penny is probably supposed to be a somewhat boxy, Chanel-style jacket. I found it not to be merely boxy but flared from the shoulders--almost a swing silhouette. Ditto Abby. I had to go down two sizes for my boucle Astrid. Even allowing for the fact that I'm not a model's size and shape, I've had to send back items that look nothing like the photos. Penny and Abby look trim in the front and 3/4 views; Astrid looks cropped and shrunken. The loose back views should have tipped me off.

  10. Well, in the past, I could not buy J Crew jackets - as I am "busty" for my size - which always made the shoulders too tight! This year, as I noticed sweaters running larger, I experimented and ordered a size 14 "droopy flower" boucle astrid in grey/black. And it fit perfectly! It fits beautifully, in fact.

I didn't try any other jacket, as I was so happy with this one...but have read with interest all of these "fit" issues. If they were to "loosen up" on the shoulder area, I could even size down.

Thanks for all the fit posts! They have helped me enjoy my selections so much more this past year!

  11. Can anyone comment on the fit of the Stadium Cloth Bridget coat.

    Thanks

  12. Cleo26 said it best!
I tried on the new Trench from the January catalog. Waaay too snug in the shoulders/arms in my usual size 0, but the bodice fit just right...Tried on the size 2 and the arms felt much more comfortable, but the bodice hung a bit loose & boxy:(

  13. I just returned the french serge day coat in 6. Although I loved it online..in person, the color was TOO bright and the fit was totally wrong. I normally wear a 6 regular or 6 or 8 petite. But this in size 6 was HUGE. And the cut was totally wrong. I was tempted to keep it because it was such a good deal but I know I would never wear it. So...some lucky person will be able to pick it up soon.

  14. I bought the Dana coat this winter despite several negative reviews (many people found the shoulders cut too tight). I went up 1 size and it fits perfectly, even with a thick sweater underneath.

Overall, I think J.Crew does need to be a bit more consistent in their sizing - I had to go up 1 size (almost 2!) in the velvet ecole and down a size in the fiona.

  15. Great post. I've been very frustrated this season too - especially when the Final Sale rears its ugly head. It's so hard to order items that you have not tried on in person when there is NO size consistency.

I am 5'9 and 125-130 pounds. My bust is 34C. I have a bum. My top size is 4/6, my bottom size is 4/6.

In the past, I would have considered myself a size 6. All of my older J Crew coats are a 6 (dating back to 2000). I buy my coats so that they fit with a sweater underneath.

The Dana Coat was perfect on me in a size 4. I really liked this item. I loved that the arms were long enough and it feels very well made.

The Taryn coat was just HUGE. It fit my body best in a size 0, but the arms were too short. If I could have found a 0T in charcoal, I would have bought it. I think the charcoal fabric had a nicer look/feel than the black. Shoulders were not tight on this one.

The Velvet Ecole was just too short in a 6. I tried to size up, and the 8 was swimming on me. I should have tried a 6T. It seems to have disappeared from the site. My jury is a little out RE jackets that are meant to look uber fitted. I always feel like strangers are looking at me and thinking ... size up woman.

The Fiona was impossible for me. I tried the 4 and the 6. Both were just so shapeless. I know this is part of the look, but the shortness and the shapelessness ... just did not flatter my body type. Who is pulling this cut off? It had a "swallowing me whole" quality. I really wanted to love it.

I purchased a Lucinda in a 6. It was $80 with all the coupons a few weeks back. The 4 in this fit my body best, but was too tight in the shoulders. Boo. I don't like the breast pockets. I am still debating returning it. It's a warm piece and well constructed.

I also wanted to love the Carrie coat. I was only able to try this on in a 6/black. It was a little too big, but I think the shoulders would have pulled in a 4. Also, the construction on this piece did not wow me. The lining seemed bulky and the stitching was off. It may have been a returned lemon. On the upside, the arms were a good length and I liked the shape of the coat.

I have a Greta sitting here in a 6/black. It also runs a little big. I would have been better off with a 4. The shoulders on this seem plenty wide. I don't like how it looks unbuttoned ... and I don't like the idea of a coat I can't unbutton w/ out feeling sloppy. How are others liking Greta?

The Maggie fit me best in a 6. This piece seems really well made, a standout for this year, I just wish it did not have the weird double collar thing going on. Who decided on that? I am still debating this one.

I have no idea how to make the Astrid work. It just hangs on me, no matter what the size. The flower bothers me a lot less than the fit.

Shipley. I have a 6 and it is a little too big in the bust. Can someone provide the measurements on a 4? I really want to try the red in smaller size, but with Final Sale I will be stuck with it. I love the fabric on this. I think it would flatter more fitted.

On a final note - I agree about the declining quality. Bella was made so much better than Ecole. My Gramercy coat has such nice detailing. Even some of the older coats (names long forgotten) have a much nicer construction. It's really noticable in things like the linings.

Of course, there are still gems, you just have to be a little choosy. Or get it on a steal and be OK with a short shelf life.

I'd also love the specs on the Stadium Cloth Bridget coat. How are folks feeling about the pocket placement?

    Love this blog.

  16. Hi, first time posting, but I read often and I love the blog-thanks, Alexis! This post is OT of jacket fits, but I had some questions about all the shipping/inventory problems that people post about here and I'm wondering if anyone has any feedback/suggestions. I have an order from 12/20 that has been shipped without a tracking number, my credit card has been charged for it, but it has NEVER ARRIVED! Has anyone else ever been charged for something like this that is reported shipped and then just had it disappear? I'm going to call the catalogue in the next day or two, but wanted to check here first in case anyone had knowledge/suggestions about this. Thanks!

  17. Goodness - sorry for the book!!!

I just wanted to add that my final synopsis is that they are cutting things a little bigger now.

But maybe some of the styles are meant to be worn a little baggy and I am just not with the times!

  18. Ann B- thanks for your comment on the Maggie. I'm debating that jacket for some time. Is it a thin wool? Online it looks thick and I have never seen it IRL. I am stuck with size. I just call CS and the bust measurement of a 10 is 39.5, i have a 38 bust. Wondering if the 10 will work...
Can you tell me if the maggie is fitted or more 'loose' than it looks?
    thanks!

  19. Thanks for this post Alexis! I have been really disappointed w/ the jacket fit at JC; I wanted so much to love the Penney, but, it was a total tent, normally a size 4-6, even the 2 looked tentish. Then, the boxy Astrid w/ droopflower ~ I am convinced the catalogue shot was pinned, no way was it that fitted IRL ~ I tried the 6 & 4, no go. Lastly, I know others loved the Maggie, but it made me look really busty (which I am not), didn't care for it at all. I wanted the Bella, but could never find it.

  20. The Resort sweaters are fitted in the shoulders also, the Henley V-neck sweater description says it is fitted, but when I received it it was fitted only in the shoulders and loose in the body.

I wish they pin the models pants too, the menswear look is gawd awful imo, makes the models hips looks big. (some of them need alittle padding).

  21. I have broad shoulders and long arms, so I always order a tall size in jackets. If the jacket doesn't run in talls, I don't buy it. ($100+ is too much to spend on a jacket that doesn't fit properly!)

I have the Herringbone Fiona in an 8T (my typical size at J. Crew) and it fits well. The waist is not fitted, but it's not supposed to be.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Gwen,

I'd say the maggie is fitted. To me, it's not a coat, more of a heavy jacket. It would be perfect for fall in NY (where I live). Too light for winter.

It is heavier than traditional suiting and that gives it a really nice drape.

I have a smaller bust for my frame, I don't think it made me look busty. (Heck, I could use a little busty ...)

I did not have to size down in this one; I did not find it to be boxy.

  23. Yes! I have had trouble this year too! I normally wear a size 6 or 8p in past years. I have several jackets from past seasons and I could always safely rely on a standard 6 for regular jackets and take an 8p in a suit jacket. This year I tried the Felicia coat in a 6 at the store but it was too big but the 4 was too small. I ordered an 8p online and too my surprise it was too small! It was too tight in the underarm area. So it went back. The travel trench in a size 6 also fit too snug in the underarm area. The 8 fits right -except the sleeves are a bit long but I can live with it.

  24. Great idea for a post. I have been lurking for awhile but haven't posted before. I am very small framed (ballet dancer) - most stores/brands eg Gap, BR, I can't wear a zero as it is too big, but as I am 5'8" my arms are long. Last year I bought at least 6 Fall jackets that I can remember, incl Velvet Bella and Lexington in 3 versions. I also bought the Houndstooth Gramercy Coat. All those jackets fit great. This year I have only bought ONE jacket - the berry trim Astrid on mega sale - definitely sort of flares out which is weird. I bought and returned the Black Houndstooth Clea from beginning of the season - the fabric was gorgeous, but of course it MUST have been pinned in the photos as it was nowhere near 'shrunken', it looked so boxy and ridiculous. Also the Ecole jacket in velvet and wool - SO big I could double it over at the front and have almost 10 inches extra fabric - also not 'shrunken' as described!!! I also think the Velvet had nowhere near the finishing of the Bella. I did get the Greta in a before Xmas Sale - but I agree with Anna B - it is very large in the shoulder and looks weird undone. My gramercy from last year fits perfectly and is SO beautifully made. I really wanted the casc flower Astrid and Penny jackets this year but I refuse to pay for tailoring on everything I buy...I think we need to try to get J.Crew's attention re this issue as clearly MANY of us are frustrated!!!
Thanks for the chance to vent - hope I didn't ramble on too much :)

  25. Herringbone Ecole - TTS and quite tailored. Love the fit.

Marie coat - size down 1 size or order your usual size if you're using as a topcoat for your suits.

Tuesday double-serge trench - size down 1 size unless you have broad shoulders. Nicely tailored fit and a belt to cinch it tighter if you like.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree totally about the shoulders being too tight on JCrew jackets and coats. I just emailed them for dimensions on the Maggie Jacket (which I agree is gorgeous) but the shoulders on the 4 will be too tight and the 6 I'm afraid will look to big every where else. boo hoo!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I didn't mention the jackets i have tried this season but did not purchase. :)

Velvet ecole: way too fitted in the shoulders

Long-sleeve Fiona: too boxy on me and i was in between sizes yet again

Alabaster tweed coat: i had to size down in this one, a first for me. The color and fabric are beautiful.

Boucle tweed scarf coat: TTS but tight in the bust. The larger size while not as fitted was nice. (I didn't get this one because i thought i would tire of the scarf. The color is gorgeous though.)

Paradise jacquard Clea: Love the color but was too boxy and again, tight in the shoulders in my "usual" size

Mandarin ruffle jacket: TTS but too boxy and itchy and short

Silver-sand jacquard jacket: TTS but boxy

Maggie: (already mentioned) I'm in between sizes though the shoulders fit great in the larger size.

This gets me wondering: is it me? Have i miscalculated my size all this time? :) The only jacket that i felt fit me perfectly among those i have purchased was the Seersucker suiting jacket from this summer. I absolutely love it.

  28. Now I'm wondering about Tall sizes. Does anyone know if the jackets/coats are longer as well as being bigger through shoulders and arem length. Also for pants is the rise higher? (or is longer the proper word?) IDK

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree with all the frustration about sizing. A size zero at J. Crew is too large for me. The only place I can shop consistently is BR. I can't wear petite because I am too tall but I am not proportioned enough to fit into most pants, jackets. I just want to pull my hair. Old J. Crew used to fit fine and I could order online with confidence but now anymore.

  30. I have the Berry Astrid, Ruffle Astrid and C.F. Astrid as well as the Simone snowleopard Peacoat.

I love the fit of JCrew jackets and own 5 seasons of them. I probably own close to 35 JCrew jackets.

Every jacket from every season fits me consistently in a size 10. I only own one jacket in a size 8 and would have preferred a 10 but it was sold out.

So for me...JCrew jackets fit great and seem consistent season to season/year to year.

  31. Hi all,

I agree with my fellow aficonadas on this one. Most esp. Anna B., Hexicon, & Cleo26. This years’ outerwear & jackets look great on the page & not so great on me IRL. In fact, my search for a winter coat ended up being quite an exchange extravaganza this year. I tried the Madeline, LadyDay & Plaza in the longer coats along with the Maggie & Tuesday Trench in the shorter ones.

    LadyDay: The best of the bunch for fit & fabric. The P6 fit very well, but I couldn’t wear a sweater or any heavy layers without the fabric stretching to the point that the lining & pockets were visible. Sized up to a P8. It’s a little roomy in the shoulders, but fits beautifully everywhere else esp. in the waist. I bought it in the Dark Poppy, which is a little out of my comfort range, but looks great. I call it my “Ladybug” coat :}

Madeline: Nice, clean lines in the front. Unfortunately, a little bit of excess fabric where the bodice meets the waist in the back. This probably could have been resolved if the little tab details went all along the back of the coat instead of just adding bulk at my waist. DH called it a “ reverse pooch”. Gotta love the man. Since I got a lovely Majestic Purple, at super price (thank you Alexis for letting me know about HOHOHO) I’m thinking about keeping it & researching how much it would cost to get it tailored. I did notice that the B&M displays had pinned these coats pretty fiercely to get a flattering look. Not a good sign.

Maggie: Fit well in shoulders, but was very boxy in waist & back. I think it was designed this way as the back has no vent – it’s gathered on the sides in a military style box pleat. This is somewhat evident on the back view on the site. However, I did think it odd that there is no photo of the model actually wearing it buttoned.

Plaza: Soooo disappointed! I have a lovely Plaza from a few seasons ago. The 6 fits perfectly & has great drape. I had hoped to get another in a classic colour like camel. Sadly, the fabric is stiff compared to my model (maybe more wool & less cashmere?) & this emphasized the poor placement of the arms. The bodice& armholes aren’t quite tailored properly & produce an unflattering bulge of fabric. Sigh. Maybe they’ll bring the Plaza back next year.

Tuesday Trench: Definitely needed to size down, even in the petites. I could get it to fit in the bust with a P6, but swimming in coat everywhere else. Yes, there was the self tie, but ended up with a lot of fabric gathered at my waist, not a good look. Also, the pockets ended up crushed & poorly placed when the coat was tied. Had to send it back :{.

I really love the double serge fabric as it’s a nice weight (for CA weather) & drapes well. Also, I like the range of colours JCrew offered this year. I had hoped to find something in a great pattern, but I couldn’t get into the cut of the Heloise & Kate. I could tell from reviews & the website photos that they just didn’t have the tailored look I prefer. I think I can see where the designers were going on the Kate (although I do agree that it looks very bulky from the side view). However, I have no idea why they dropped the waist to bum level on the Taryn. Also curious about the partial tie belt on the Lille. I loved the fabric on the Heloise but I think like the Lille, Marie, & Greta they just work better on a slimmer frame.

It seems like JCrew is trying to please everyone; aficionada’s who want a classic coat as well as those who want something modern or mod. As a result, most of us are left with one or two “almost perfect” options & a lot of “looks great on the 12 year old model in the photo” fantasies. Oh well, there’s always next year.

Good luck fellow aficionada’s & stay warm!

    Heather:D

  32. I am 5'9" with very long arms and the Tall jackets/coats from JCrew work well for me. I don't find them to be any roomier in the shoulders than a standard size. They just have a longer torso and arm length.

  33. For those of you with the Maggie jacket, is the inside collar itchy at all? I can't usually stand wool directly against my skin so I have avoided this jacket for that reason. But if it's not itchy, maybe I should try it.

    TIA

  34. Anon @ 1:35 PM: I normally have problems with wool but did not find the Maggie itchy at the neck. The wool of this jacket is quite nice and thick. It's worth a try if you like the lines.

  35. Hello everyone, and Happy New Year! It's been a long, long time since I posted, and I'd like to throw in my two cents about the Carrie.

I'm 5'8", 135lbs, curvy and with a well-defined waist. The majority of my clothing cinches at the waist, including my heavy, "dressy"(wool, as opposed to down) winter coat. But! I thought the Carrie was super cute the moment I saw it online, and the shape, which is the exact opposite of everything I normally wear, really appealed to me.

After originally purchasing a size 2, heather acorn Carrie, I ended up exchanging it for (and keeping) a size 4. I would say it fits true to size. It's designed to fit loosely through the body and, as you might guess from the images online, it's quite snug across the shoulders and in the neck. IMO, the sleeves are also a smidge on the shorter side for a coat, which could be a problem for someone with longer arms.

I LOVE THIS COAT! The texture of the fabric (90% wool, 10% cashmere) is beautiful, and the color is just what I wanted-- not the same old black, not as difficult to keep clean as ivory, and not a super bright, more trendy color either. (Not to knock any of those-- they look great, but I already have a black coat and the others just aren't for me. :) ) I really love the standing collar and the ties, which I haven't seen on many coats this season; the little interior details; and the top-stitching at the cuffs and pockets.

I've been wearing my Carrie mostly with casual outfits-- cords and jeans, and usually with brown tones. B/c it hits at the hip, I don't find it warm enough to wear when the temps go to far below freezing, but it's great for the 30-60 degree range; in fact, I think the fabric itself is quite warm, but the cut of this particular coat doesn't work for colder weather. B/c of this, and the color, I think I'll be wearing it well into the spring and that it'll be perfect for the fall as well.

As for jackets, I've mentioned before on this blog that I am SO SICK of cropped, boxy, bracelet sleeve blazers and jackets! So, this year's offerings at J.C. didn't do much for me; I tried on the plain wool Astrid and hated it-- as boxy as the day is long, but oddly tight across the shoulders and bust, as others have mentioned here. The Ecole fell reeeallllly flat for me as well; such a disappointment after the beautiful Bella last year. One of my favorite J.C. purchases of all time is a cream Lexington jacket that I purchased last January on super sale; although it's a bit cropped, it's nowhere near as short as many of this year's styles.

Hope my looooong comment helps anyone who's been considering the Carrie! And thanks, Alexis, for the great topic!

  38. Size 0P has been consistent through the years - but I'm a true petite (under 5/3").

I love the mixed menswear look. JCrew didn't invent the look. I can remember seeing the look in Elle magazine years ago.

  39. Great Post! Thank you Alexis.

I should begin by explaining that I'm 5-31/2" tall. Between 123 and 125 lbs. I normally wear a size 4 to 6 jacket.

Berry Astrid Jacket - purchased a size 6 originally. Way too big. Didn't like how the sleeves stopped right at the wrist - like I got a bad alteration job. Ordered a P6 and a P4. Like the look of the P4 but kept the P6 because it allowed me to move in the real world. Somewhat loose in the chest but I'm okay with that.

Boucle Astrid Flower Jacket - Received this New Year's Eve. Love it! Love it! Love it... now that is, after I slaved over it (please feel free to read my blog for a full review and tips on reviving the sad flower). I purchased it in a size 2. It would have been a classic fit had I gotten the 4 but I wanted it to be a little more tailored so I went with the 2. Love how the 2 looks and it's not tight anywhere.

Boucle Short-Scarf Coat - I stand corrected. Those who posted that it's TTS, I agree. I was able to finally try this on in a size 2 and I don't like the fit of it. While I have some room in the chest, I know that I will have trouble steering the car or have to do anything that requires me stretching my arms in front of me. I'm keeping the 6P. Arms a little short but found out yesterday that I could just snip the stitches that keep them folded up and simply bring the cuff down about 1/2 inch. This will do the trick. This jacket fits TTS unless you like it really fitted ... then it becomes a bit of a compromise between looking the way you want versus being able to function in real-life, kwim?

Pea-Coat - Love the Pea Coat, actually way more than I thought I would. I purchased both the S and the PS. I love the look and fit of the PS way better than the S. The S just looked too long and nipped in too low and the sleeves were way too long. The PS is just perfect. Also, I LOVE the Thermore. I will be posting a Review on the Peacoat on my blog in the next couple of days. If you're interested in the fit and the Thermore, please return and check it out.

Plaza Coat: Hate it! The fit is ugly. There's nothing really special about this coat. I love the Camel shade I got but that's about it. The shape is uninteresting. It's definitely a classic but without any Wow power.

Herringbone Ecole Jacket - Love it. Purchased it in a size 4. Love the fit. It fits TTS. I would not size down or up personally. I don't think I would be able to move freely in the 2 and I wouldn't wear anything heavy under this jacket anyway.

Velvet Ecole Jacket - Originally purchsed it in the Petite - P6 to be exact. Does not fit well. The waist hook and eye sits way too high in the waist. I look like a Dwarf in it. I've ordered it in the Regular 4 and hopefully that will fit better. I will post a review once it arrives.

Penny Boucle Jacket - I own it in a size 4. I wish I had gotten it in a size 2 or even a 0. It fits on the large side. I would certainly recommend sizing down. Since it fits so large on me, I'm using it as an Outerwear Jacket as opposed to something I wear in the office.

Sorry for the long post. I hope this helps anyone who's looking for the fit for any of these jackets.

  40. Oops, that should read 5 feet 3 and one half inches NOT 5 feet 31 over 2 inches.

  41. Harriet Owners: How big does it run? Could a person who wears a 6 wear a 2? How are the shoulders-are they roomy/big too?

  42. I tried on the herringbone Fiona & couldn't get it off fast enough because of how boxy it was - just hated it on me. A lot of the dressy jackets, like the metallic ones (clea?) also look really boxy. I so wanted to like the droopy flower astrid in pink once it dropped in price, but even at $60 the fit was just too much like a cardboard box on me.

Makes me all the happier I own three herringbone Bellas - it's just such a beautifully cut and made jacket :-)

  43. Crew Girl in Canada--what can I say? I am floored by your flower results. I didn't even give it a try when it arrived, I just removed it and started playing with other flowers I own. Now I know I can do this;) MUCH APPRECIATED! Others with floppy flower Astrid--it's worth a peek at her blog for more info on flower revival:)

  44. Alexis, fantastic idea to discuss this topic more in-depth!

Cleo26 really refined my thoughts about fit- it's not just tight shoulders and a large waist, but also a somewhat larger bodice than shoulder. It is definitely an A shape that seems to dominate all J.Crew jacket styles that are specifically a short, box cut.

I haven't tried many of the box cut jackets e.g. Fiona or Astrid, as I know I won't like them. The shape is unflattering on me. I do have a problem with the shoulder-bodice-waist ratio in fitted, classically tailored jackets. Narrow arms/shoulders, good fit in the bodice, and a large waist. This has been noted already by many, and I agree with the comments that we often buy a jacket expecting that tailored look only to try it on and realize that it was pinned in the photos. It seems J.Crew expects that most of us are large-waisted.

The only J.Crew jacket I'm have a really good fit in is last season's Abbey. It's a bit swingy but still looks good. My Bella is too large in the waist, and just slightly so in the bodice, but I couldn't size down without knowing what it's like to have a straightjacket on. Although, I do know how that feels... it's like ordering jackets on Final Sale, getting excited and eagerly anticipating their arrival, then finding they look horrid on you IRL! No exchanges! That's one thing I can't forgive J.Crew for, ever. No returns, fine, but no exchanges? Come on.

What I need from J.Crew, even if they can't get the sizing consistency in hand, is just slightly looser arms/shoulders, or else a narrower waist, so the jackets actually look like they do pinned on the models.

I've had jackets in P0, 0, 2, P2, P4 and a coat in P6, by the way. For this reason I believe we should be able to reserve the right to exchanges within a reasonable timeframe.

I bought and returned the Maggie in size 2 for it's loose body and wait, and long arms. The P2 is arriving today, I'll let you know how it works out...

... speak of the devil! UPS just delivered it. So: P2 Maggie is better in some ways than the 2 regular, but worse in others. Better sleeve length, but the torso was also shortened, I wish it was a lot longer. Even when I tried on the 2, my brother thought the torso looked short, and I'm 5'3". The waist is still rather wide, but I don't look pregnant by any means. The bodice is OK, only it's a bit too wide across (I also think that of all J.Crew jackets). And last but not least: the Shoulder. It's a decent fit, not loose but not overly constricted, either. What I really dislike about it is the "short" shoulder, if that makes sense. I also feel like the armpit is not cut "high enough", so that when I spread out my arms, that area is sort of "webbed", making my already short arms look shorter. That is related to the width being too large. Does anyone else also find this with the jackets?

But whether to keep or not to keep...

  45. OT, about new Victoria camis:

I called both of my J. Crews, and they don't have the new Victoria camis. If you go to your B&M this weekend and see them, snap some pictures so we can see what the new colors look like. Alexis, maybe we could turn this into a new post - and people could share where they have seen them.

    Thanks everyone!

  46. Thank you Bug Pin! I'm glad you found the flower revival tips helpful. It truly isn't difficult - just a little time consuming, that's all :) By the way, I didn't use any starch. I'm not familiar with starch and didn't want to chance ruining the flower. Also, if you so it the way I did, you won't need any additional pins. My flower's been hanging off my jacket for 3 days now and it hasn't wilted. When re-pinning the flower to the jacket, remember to pin the flower in such a way that the pin is on the top side of the mount.

OT: Just wondering, has anyone seen the Golden Avocado Boucle Astrid Jacket in person? I understand that it's a little bright.

I own the Golden Avocado in the Lea Merino Cardigan as well as the Perfect Fit Flower Tank and in those 2 items, the green is quite muted, almost the color of the Olive you get in a Martini. Is the Boucle Jacket Golden Avocado the same color? Can anyone help?

    TIA.

  48. I tailor most jackets and coats to fit me perfectly. Just finished the Penny boucle, which someone mentioned as running large through the waist, and it took about 40 minutes. Easy to do. Open up the lining and take in the seams at the waist. Hand stitch the lining closed again. Result is a good fit through both the shoulders AND torso. Hard to buy off the rack and get a perfect fit without a little adjustment especially if you have square shoulders and a narrow waist.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I agree whole-heartedly with Fluffles.

The reality is, depending on how a jacket is MEANT to fit and be worn, we won't have a consistent fit across one size all the time. In other words, some JCAs acknowledge that the fit of some jackets (i.e., the Astrid and Fiona) are MEANT to be boxy; it is simply not their preference. Accordingly, the sizing/fit won't be uniform across jacket/blazer styles.

The REAL issue is the ability to return something that is ill-fitting. I think we can all agree that - pain in the butt notwithstanding to return said ill-fitting items - there would be less angst about the claimed inconsistency of jacket sizing if we could simply return the items that don't fit.

Bottom Line: Final Sale sucks for all kinds of reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yes, it is good to remember that these are "off the rack" jackets. If you want a perfect fit, see a tailor...esp. for a fitted look. How else can one expect a jacket (many under $100) to fit pefectly?!

I think JCrew does a great job all in all with their jackets!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I personally do not like a very fitted jacket. I refuse to wear one that way in fact. Therefore, JCrew boxy jackets (as they are meant to be anyway) are perfect for me--even at my 5'10 1/2" height...I don't even buy the talls.....Keep up the good work, JCrew. I am very happy! I have 20 of your jackets from the past 3 years.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well, even though I may be in the minority on this one...as far as postings here go...I know I am not in the minority in society as a whole. I have a larger waist for my 120 lb frame at 5'9" and I am extremely happy with the way JCrew jackets fit. I also have broad shoulders as well...Great jackets from JCrew in my opinion.

  53. OT - I bought something online that was final sale, but the reciept in the box does not say anything about final sale. Can I return it? It also came with a return label. Weird!

  54. Anon at 4:23 - well said.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Steph- If it was not marked Final Sale (J.Crew doesn't label everything, seemingly randomly, from FS as such) then you may return or exchange it. My order arriving today was like that.

I agree with the posters who have said that we can't expect off-the-rack jackets to have a perfect fit, especially under $100 (several of my jackets were more than that, however). Anon at 4:07 pointed out that there are certain cuts we expect to fit loosely, but some "tailored, classic" cuts aren't really cut that way. They're pinned, as many Aficionadas have guessed. That, and being able to exchange an item, is, as she said, really the issue.

I agree absolutely that I can't expect a perfect fit everytime, even after trying a couple sizes. But the range of sizes, while not being able to always try a new one because of the FS, is what gets me. I do have jackets that I know I would wear more often and feel really good in if they had a better fit. I've just tried on a few from the closet again: Boucle Tweed Pembroke, a single-button twill, Bella, and this time, the Abbey seemed a little larger. I will invest in some tailoring! First I'll try it myself, and if I don't succeed, I will take them to a tailor or seamstress. I think that's a great thing to invest in, and a great idea to do it yourself from andrew.

This has been a really helpful blog!

  56. As if I need to add more to this topic- final opinion on the Maggie P2:

It's a size down from usual but I like the fit overall and I can see myself getting a lot of practical use out of it. It's short in the torso, but that can't be fixed. So, nothing to alter. I'm going to happily keep it.

The colour: I went from heather bright berry to the camel. I don't have any tan jackets yet, and I'm getting the Aubrey in berry, so I'm also happy with that. On the other hand, the medium-weight wool looked a lot prettier and perhaps of higher quality in berry. Either are great for warmth.

I have the Golden Avocado Boucle Jacket. I actually think for once the pic on the web is accurate. Before I ordered mine, I called CS to express concern that it looked a lot brighter than sweaters in the exact same color. She went and checked. I was told it's slightly darker than the pic on the web, but nowhere near sweaters in the exact same color.

  58. I agree with everybody about the Tuesday trench. I'm usually a 4 in jackets, but the 2 fit with room to spare. Beautiful jacket, though!

  59. ALL of the women I know have many, if not most of their clothes tailored to fit. Not to make anyone upset, but expecting mass produced items to fit everyone perfectly is not realistic.

Talk to your friends and family, and find out the name of a good tailor. If you expect a custom fit from a mass produced item you may have to pay for that perfection.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Has anyone used J.Crew's in-house tailoring? Do they still do this? I recall it at least used to be free basic alterations with a regular-prided item.

For me, this discussion isn't just to say "bleh, the jackets never fit and I'm too lazy to tailor!" but to get an idea of how the sizes seem to run or change, and how they are working out for other Aficionadas.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Where I see this topic difficult to manage and then kinda going off-topic is that we all come in so many shapes and sizes even when speaking of the same size piece of clothing. Based on so many factors such as height, where one carries a bit more weight or lack thereof (breasts), broad shoulders, long arms/short arms etc. Add to this our personal desires for style and fit within the same garment...and that just isn't easy to generalize.

I think it is always helpful and to hear how someone feels a garment fits but it is most appropriate to follow up with a question of their body type, height/weight, shoulders, chest ..you get the idea.

Tailoring an item for the best fit seems...obvious.

  62. Fluffles -

As recently as 3 weeks ago, a SA in Santa Monica, CA offered to have me speak to their in-house tailor for an alteration. So, I believe the B&Ms still offer alterations from in-house tailors.

I can't comment on pricing, however, as I did not go so far as to purchase the item in question.

  66. Astrid jacket
    original price $228
    sale price $60

Even if you spend $30-40 on tailoring, you are still getting a quality piece for a great deal.

My mother and older sisters taught me how to sew and tailor and I'm forever grateful. I always have to order to fit my large bust and then tailor for a small waist. Nice to have items fit as though they were made just for me.

If you don't know where to find a quality tailor, try asking at some upscale shops. They often do not have a tailor on staff so send garments out for completion.

  68. Talking about jackets... I am still so mad at JCrew for editing the ruffle Astrid! Taking the ruffles off of the cuff was the worst thing they could do! I was so excited about that jacket, but since the cuffs were gone, it changed the whole look. I didn't even buy the jacket because of this, but with the cuffs, I would have paid full price.

  69. I agree that one can't expect perfection from clothing that is mass (or minimally) produce. I'm just looking for consistently in sizing whether the fit is supposed to be boxy or tailored.

I wear the same size and get the same fit from BR (and for that matter Armani, Valentino, Nanette Lepore, Versace, etc.) that i don't often find in J.Crew. I would love to be able to order a size and know that it will fit even though it might look boxy, tailored or frou frou, or if not, be able to return it.

  70. I had problems with the JCrew Jackets for this season. The fit was never good for me. I am usually a size 0 and none of the jackets fit me right. They were too boxy and even though the fit in the shoulders was OK, the rest was awful. I was kind of sad that I would not get any of the jackets this season, especially since I live in JCrew jackets

  74. Thank you to ST for the color info no the Astrid Boucle Jacket. I didn't realize that it was quite so bright. That explains why there's so much still available.

My first choice was certainly the Bright Berry - which I got and love. My next purchase would have been the Heather Charcoal but it's now sold out. URGH!

I'm thinking that the Golden Avocado will be difficult to wear. Maybe I should hold off. Sigh! It's so inexpensive right now and it's screaming Buy Me, Take Me Home ... but I have to remember that if I'm not going to be wearing it much, then it's not a deal, right? Sigh!

Leslie, sounds like you did a fantastic job on the flower yourself. Without having to move the pin, have you found that your flower remains upright? What color did you get yours in? I'm glad you're enjoying my posts. I'm constantly looking for someone else's review on J Crew clothing and wanted to give back. So, I'm glad that I can of some help to others.

  75. I have actually been fortunate to find many jackets at J.Crew this past year that fit me well without any tailoring. I like both fitted/tailored looking jackets, as well as the boxier styles. I took a size 4 in the Maggie, Andrea, Boucle' Astrid, and Tulip Jackets, but a size 2 in the Berry-Trim Astrid, Lucille, Donegal Tweed Blazer, and Ecoles. I could also wear a 2 in the Boucle' Astrid, but the 4 works just as well. :) I actually removed my flower pin and plan to wear it without or possibly with one of my own brooches (pins) instead. (I do still plan to fix the flower like Leslie or Crew Girl In Canada did so that I CAN wear it sometimes, as well. :)

  76. Talk about inconsistent sizing - I wear at 6 Tall and just bough the Astrid floral boucle jacket in fushia in a size 2 (for $40!!).

********* Berry Trim Astrid******* in Plum in size 4. I put the jacket on hold under "JCA" at the Birmingham Galleria. $99 + 30% off
205-982-9300. Should be on hold until tomorrow night.

There was also a size 0 Astrid floral boucle jacket for %59 + 30% off. I didn't put this one on hold, though.

And there was a Penny boucle in black, size 4.

  77. Crew Girl: Yes, I just checked my flower in the closet, and the bottom is still full and pretty :). I wonder if gravity will take over, though, and it will begin to droop? I think I'll move the pin as extra "insurance" on the droopiness! LOL! My astrid is in the bright berry and I couldn't agree with you more! The color is stunning on. I have blonde hair, pretty fair skin and blue eyes and my DH absolutely loves the bright berry on me. OHHHH....maybe I should buy more JC in bright berry...that way when my beloved UPS guy shows up I won't get as much flack from my DH on my out of control JC habit!??!!

  80. Great post idea. I've had the same issues as everyone else -- too tight in the shoulders / too boxy-loose everywhere else.

PEACOAT: This is the only coat that fit me well this season. I am 5 feet 8, 125-130 pounds. I am broad shouldered and in most brands I am a 6/8. I took the size Small in this coat and it's really nice.

  81. Over the past nine months, I have found JCrew's tops to be cut too snug in the shoulders. Something that further confirmed for me that they are cutting the shoulders to narrow, I accidentally ordered a size 6 petite cotton button down from the Gap. It fits me better in the shoulders than some of JCrew's regular size 4 tops/jackets. I also agree their sizing varies so much I end up spending time studying the pic's in the catalog & website so I can safely 'guess' the fit of the item. Also, I call cs for any items I'm considering ordering for the measurements. Since they have them so readily available I really think JC should publish them on the website with each item.

Keeping with the jacket sizing topic, I received my Harriet coat today (size 4, color Navy). It fits tts for me, size 4. I have the Lilly coat in a size 4 & the shoulders are a tad bit snug. The Harriet fits perfect in the top & I don't think it's too bulky, and thank heavens it's not a 'bathrobe'! I'm 5'7", slim with hips so I would not like this coat if it had been bulky. It's very soft and I apreciate the funky lining on the interior too. If you have an extra $80-90 to spare I'd get this as an extra coat.

  82. The Travel Trench looks great in the photo on the graphic for this post, but on the website's model, it doesn't really work. The description says long sleeves, but they're at least 3 inches too short for that model! I want to love this jacket, but not if it fits like that.

  83. Ctla: My local B&M (Carmel CA) carries wool aran knee-high socks in grey, but I am afraid that the shop will charge you the shipping cost (probably more than what you’d pay for socks). While I love following the reviews in this site, it is sometimes hard to navigate between this site and the different items being reviewed on JCrew's site. More info will always be helpful for the consumer. This will translate to more satisfied customers and less returns for JCrew.

  87. JCA's

Just returned from the King of Prussia PA store and had a wonderful time trying things on, and, unfortunately for my wallet, buying a boatload of stuff.

Michelle Merino Cardigan -- Very long in length, (could be a mini dress), wide enough in the shoulders and bust, but slim cut in the hips. Didn't like the length (hits at a funny place) and fit. Did love the Golden Avocado color, but didn't buy it.

Boyfriend Cashmere Sweater -- I recommend this over the Michells for fabric, length (hits in all the right places) and overall look. Bought it in navy and putty.

Twisted Terrace Pants -- When I first saw these on the site's thumbnails I loved the silouette. But when I clicked on it and found out they were so wrinkled, I just couldn't buy them. But, today I tried them on and bought them in white and light brown. Still love the silouette and hope I can iron the wrinkles out:) I can't wear these in front of Mom. She gives me a hard time about the holes in my JC vintage jeans:)

Hemp Pencil Skirt -- Adorable like the Double Serge, interesting fabric and TTS. I bought navy.

Hemp Jacket -- Boxy, just like it looks on the website. Maybe I should have tried a smaller size but it probably would have been tight in the shoulders, so I passed on it.

Ingrid Peep Toes -- Got them at 189.99 with 30% off (FS). Try these on before you buy them. They run anywhere from 1/2 to 1 full size bigger than what you normally wear. All the colors are great. I bought navy (boring:)

Snow Leopard Cardi -- Cute as a button, and I couldn't resist.

Camp shirts -- Fairly sheer but not bad. I ended up passing on this because I am ample in the chest and the buttons gapped.

Travel Trench-- I liked it, and ended up buying one. Not sure it's worth the money though.

Cotton Interlock Ava dress -- I was hoping to like this from seeing it in the picture, but the fabric is not all that great. Pass.

    All the sandals are adorable.

Lattice print skirt -- cute but didn't need it. TTS

Victoria camis in pewter and peach. I bought the pewter.

They also have a storybook bracelet if anyone is interested in calling. I don't remember the # off the top of my head.

    HTH

    Totally worth the money.

  91. I have a 'thing' for coats, especially J. Crew coats, so thank you so much for this post idea!!

Tulip Coat in black size 2 - TTS (for JC coats: a bit snug in the shoulders and kind-of a-line), got a 2, sleeves are on the verge of being too long, but perfect for cold weather!

Felicia Coat in pink size 2- TTS, a teeny bit snug in the shoulders, but probably b/c I wear as an everyday coat with thin sweaters, etc... I cannot go anywhere without getting a compliment on the color and style of this coat ... favorite coat ever!!!

Giraffe Coat size 2- TTS, LOVE THIS COAT! So unique and I'll keep this forever! A bit a-line, but not too much... classic.

Madeline in dark poppy size 2 - great coat to throw on (esp during the holidays b/c of the color) ... this coat feels a bit looser than the others, but not in a bad way. Very comfortable.

Metallic Houndstooth Pheobe size 0 - the only "boxy" jacket I was willing to try and I'm glad I sized down! I don't feel this is too boxy if you size down and wear it with snug pants. Got a lot of compliments on it! Great for going out! I'm long waisted and it's still not too short!

    ...finally...

Cooper Chino Jacket in khaki size 2 - the best $50 I've ever spent at J. Crew! Love it!

Hope that gives some insight to others looking to get some great deals on these coats now!

  93. I just tried on the new Cotton-Linen ottoman Aubrey Jacket at BM. I tried it on in my normal 0 and it fit TTS. I felt like the pictures on the website do it justice on how it looks IRL. I will have to say it was a little snug in the shoulders as many of you have mentioned about other jackets and has a boxy/swingy/A line feel to the body. I definitely still love this jacket, however, and am considering ordering a petite 2 in order to have a more snug fit in the body. The fabric is wonderful and it has a charming feel overall.

  95. Sally O,

The trench has long sleeves that hit the normal place for long sleeves. The model looks like she has extra long arms and the jacket is too tight or pinned in a strange way. Wouldn't make me want to try it on, but I saw and bought it before I saw this picture. It's a great jacket (maybe a little pricey for what it is) but I still bought it. I tried it on with long sleeve victoria underneath and I've got a Meryl Streep Out of Africa vibe going on.

  96. Sort of OT: Was in the Walnut Creek store this evening, and there was a rack of random coats. I swear there was a Lucido coat there and the sticker tag read...$19.99!!! No joke. I almost bought it for that price but I couldn't believe it! I think it was a size 12.

Other than that--store was picked over but great staff!

  97. To the person who asked about j.crew in-house alterations: They do still do it. I've had several suits (pants, jackets, skirts) and dress shirts tailored in house. Things that are free: hemming anything. Beyond that you pay. BUT, it really depends on how the in-house tailor charges for things. For example, Pancho, the tailor (absolutely fabulous, he's a master tailor) at the Arden Fair sacramento store will charge for basic sleeve hemming even when he needs to detach the sleeve from the shoulder and shorten the sleeve in this manner so as to keep the buttons on suit jackets still functional. If your tailor charges more for this, then you'll have to pay the difference. Hope this makes sense!

  98. Leslie, you make me smile... because you remind me so much of myself. This season alone, I've purchased 2 items in the Bright Berry - the Astrid Boucle Jacket and the Short-Scarf Boucle Coat. Actually, 3 items - the other is the Victoria Cami in Bright Fuschia. It's essentially the same color only they've called it something else. So I guess it's 3 items. Too Funny! I hope you'll find lots more in Bright Berry.

  99. Argyle: I have last season's Mandy boucle, and the 2 fit best. I found it a tad loose, but the 0 was too narrow in the shoulder. I like the A shape of it and the wonderful sleeves. I am going to have the upper bodice taken in, but will leave it wide at the hem. I'm 5'3", 120-130 lbs, and have a 33 1/2 in. bust, if that's of any help. Sorry I haven't tried this season's.

  101. ARGYLE,

Hi, I have last years Mandy Boucle. On JCrew website DECRIPTION of the JCrew it said it RAN SMALL and to size up. I did and it fits me great! Love it! I usually wear a 10 in All my JCrew jackets and the 12 fits the same as my other jackets in 10's. So JCrew was right when they told customers to size up...

  103. sorry to get off-topic: I am looking to purchase the graphite grey Glenbrae flat suede boots, but with the final sale I am getting nervous: does anyone own these and how is the color? Does the grey go with outfits, or does it look odd, especially if wearing mostly dark or neutral colors? Also, does the shape of the flat Glenbrae boot make you look like your foot is longer than it is?
    thanks in advance!

    ReplyDelete
  104. All - I am slightly larger than the majority of shoppers here. I always wear a size 10 jacket and have not really had jacket problems with J Crew. Coats are a totally different story, but not for this post. However, I am kind of confused about all the Penny Jacket comments. I agree that that models jacket was pinned. However, in the description of the jacket it reads "A-line" fit. That was enough to turn moe off right there. I don't care what the model looks like, who wants a bunch of bulky boucle swinging around their torso? Crazy design actually.

  110. Thank you Anonymous! Very helpful.

I forgot to mention (this is on topic) that I found the wool-cashmere Plaza coat to fit terribly. I normally wear a size 2 at JC but the 2 in the Plaza coat looked huge on me, and was totally shapeless. I thought if I sized down it might help, but the 0, while it fit in the shoulders and arms, looked kind of like a sack. I realize it is not meant to have a fitted waist but when wearing this coat I looked as if I had no waist at all. The lining also kind of bunched up in the chest area, which made for some awkward looking bulges on the bust. I'm returning it and ordering the alabaster tweed coat, keeping my fingers crossed for better luck.

  111. Crew Girl In Canada: How do you like the boucle scarf coat? I'm sort of stalking it, hoping for an additional discount before I bite the bullet. Let me know your thoughts. Any IRL pics on your blog? (by the way....love that you do that...REALLY helps!)

Shoegal: I have the grey suede flat Glenbrae boots. I love them to death! They look great with everything! I especially like wearing them with other neutrals, ie. browns, beiges on top, skinny jeans and the grey boots. I would get your regular size, as they fit pretty TTS. Because they are flat, your foot does look a little longer, but narrow, so not in a bad way. I highly recommend these! Good luck!

  112. O/T: Can anyone tell me how the Victoria cami fits? I have the shirt version and found it to fit TTS, but I worry about the cami, since so many of their camis in the past were HUGE! TIA!

  117. Well, I'm wearing the fuschia crystal starlet jacket, dark j crew jeans, black patent leather Capri sandals and my gunmetal Cole Haan triple satchel bag. I LOVE the design and fit of this jacket! We're on the bus from the hotel to the Disney Magic for our cruise. If you see a brunette with a red-headed family, say hello to a fellow Aficionada! I also brought my zebra jacket which I love, my yellow Palmas bag, my houndstooth Phoebe (great with white jeans and previously stated sandals) and a variety of J Crew items I've purchased over the years. I was surprised by how many J crew items I packed in the suitcase. So much of it has orange and yellow in it, too, which have become my favorite two summer colors. Ha! Bright, but happy, fun colors for me. I love the originality and fit of the above 3 jackets. Happy new year! May 2009 be better for all and all be blessed with health and joy.

I stopped buying winter stuff long ago as I'm moving backto India end of this month. I just couldn't resist buying Maggie as I was stalking the web for black in my size. I received it yesterday and I love the fit and the material but have decided to return it as I won't be gettingmuch use of it in my country and also I can use that money to buy some stuff for my kid.

As others have mentioned I too felt it little snug in the shoulders if you want a tailored fit in the body but I would have kept it if it was made was cotton.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Thank you Anu, and others who have commented on the boxier fit of the Maggie. I am definitely an inverted triangle on top so need the shoulder room, but prefer a tailored waist on my jackets. With the gathered back on the Maggie, tailoring will probably ruin the style. I've been on the fence for a while with the Maggie. Now I can scratch it off my list for good.

  126. I haven't tried on any of the coats at J.Crew. BUT, I do still wear my J.Crew black pea coat from 12 years ago - can't beat that! And I was at the Walnut Creek store yesterday and they had all the metallic thin belts marked down to $9.99 and then an extra 30% off. Unfortunately they only had size Large....

    ReplyDelete
  127. I too was extremely disappointed by coat fit. I bought the Plaza coat 6 years ago in P0. It fit me perfectly, the wool was soft and lofty. If the lining weren't shredded to pieces, I would never buy another coat again. This year, with all the sales, I decided to get a new one. Since the old one worked so well, I just got the same coat in the same size only to find out that the P0 no longer fit me in the shoulders or arms BUT it was too boxy in the waste and bust. I sized up to a P2, the fit was better in the shoulder and arms but it was sooo boxy. Not to mention that the fabric was no longer the same, it felt heavy and, well, rougher. Looking at the tags I notice that my coat from years ago was 20% cashmere, and the new Plaza coat was only 10% cashmere. I'm really bummed. Oh well, maybe it won't cost too much to re-line my old coat.

  129. Kristen Chick: I have the crawford blouse in pink...not really a pink girl but it looks wonderful! I think this is a great design coz you cant go wrong with the size if its loose on you, it hangs beautifully so even if you size up and gain weight, the tight fit will still look fine. Just wear a tight tank underneath to show off the design of the blouse. I think its one of those great design classics one must have! I will wait for additional % 0ff and free shipping before I get the other colors as well!

  130. Thanks SO much, Anon @ 10:37!!! Just called the Collection store and they still have the Deco print dress in both 4 and 6 (and probably other sizes as well). It was a long wait on hold, but worth it for $60 - 30%, especially since I was at one time considering paying full price!

    ReplyDelete
  131. Anu, what size Maggie are you returning?

The Plaza coat is definitely different this year. I've bought various Plaza coats over the past 3 years and loved the previous ones. This year was a disappointment. Not as soft (less cashmere), and the pockets are ridiculously shallow. My keys don't even fit into them, whereas the old ones have perfectly useful pockets. J. Crew, I like useful pockets in my coats! At least make them deep enough for my keys or gloves please!

    ReplyDelete
  142. La Belle Helene, I bet the sparkle tweed Aubrey is beautiful. I was also thinking turtleneck or crewneck straightaway, but I haven't tried anything, as I haven't received the jacket yet. What do you think about a muted green or olive with yours? What tones stand out to you on the piece IRL?

I went with the (lower-priced) heather bright berry herringone. I wanted *something* in that colour aside from a sweater and socks ;) I'm a brunette and thought it looked nice.

  143. Well JCA's,

I am going to have to resign the blog. JC lost my package with my coveted Las Palmas bag. They refuse to track it down, or do anything about it. And all the cancelled orders and screwed up orders over the past few months. I am so tired of dealing with incompetents and people who pass the buck.

I am done with JC. And unfortunately they are going to feel that pinch. I spend a lot of money on them. No longer.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Fluffles, good idea to try out green, too. I was going to order the bright berry, but it disappeared from the site - I'm keeping an eye out in case it magically re-appears.

Can't wait to hear what you think of that pink. If it's like the boucle astrid, I love it. I think white, grey and green would all work under pink. As for bottoms, the Aubrey looks great with jeans, but I've also tried mine on with a pencil skirt, and that makes for a really chic look, too. I've ordered the matching "night sky" skirt - can't wait to see how it all looks together. Provided, of course, the package does in fact contain the skirt I ordered, and not one of J.Crew's surprises...

    ReplyDelete
  145. La Belle Helene, is that the shimmery pencil skirt? I see that and your Aubrey (along with the others) are now sold out. That combination should look incredibly well put together. Here's to your order arriving safely :)

A note on the heather bright berry: I tried it on at home at the same time as the bright berry Maggie. Side-by-side, the Aubrey was a still pinkish but a bit darker with more of a coral/red/orange hue. The regular berry is brighter. I loved both colours.

  146. I recently bought the Lady Day Coat in a size 6 (I wear size Small tops) and it fit like a dream! I'm rather broad shouldered--but small in the bust--and the coat fit perfectly! It's nice and fitted in the bodice, too. I don't know about other J.Crew coats, but this one fits so well that I hate to take it off. I feel so elegant and "tailored" wearing it!

  147. Does anyone have shoulder measurements for the cashmere turtleneck in Medium? The L was pretty loose on me, in terms of the body, so I returned it.
I'm not sure a M would work in terms of my shoulder measurements (16"). My bust size is 36C.
I don't want to order without checking since it's all final sale now!
    Any help would be appreciated!

    ReplyDelete

  150. Leslie, great minds think alike! I just finished a review on the Bouclé Tweed Short Scarf Coat on my blog. Please feel free to check it out. Yes, I've included a IRL picture as well.

La Belle Helene, the Heather Azalea sounds very pretty. I really wanted to get the Herringbone Bella but it was sold out by the time I found it. Maybe J Crew will bring a similar color back? I can only hope. I just love pinks!

    ReplyDelete
  151. La Belle Helene, I was going to order the Aubrey Jacket and yes, like yourself, I've noticed that it disappeared from the site. Likely because the Aubrey Jacket is part of the Spring collection. Sigh!

I was seriously considering buying it but was a little concerned about the fly-away opening in the front. I was worried that my belly would get cold since there's nothing there to cover it.

For those who have tried this jacket on, what is your opinion on the fly-away front? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

    TIA!

    ReplyDelete
  152. I lucked out with some of the jackets, mainly the various astrid variations. I got the orange, black and the ivory flowering jackets and they couldn't have fit any better.

I got my regular size 8 in astrid, the lille stormy tweed, the alabaster tweed, and the orange lucille. All fitted fine.

Had to do 2 sizes down for french serge day, 1 size day for tuesday, and they still don't fit well enough for me to keep.

I tried 4 different size variations of the maggie (8, p10, 6, p12) and finally found that the size 8 peacock with the sleeves rolled up fitted the best.

The new hemp jacket in size 8 worked well for me too. Probably will get when it goes on sale more(the hemp pieces are 40% off at retail stores)

The new victoria colors are a light tangerine, and one that's called stone that's really a light pewter. I also love the spring blouses with cap sleeves that're made with a lightweight cotton. It's so pretty I want one of each color when it goes on sale.

  153. ctla- i returned a pair of the aran knee socks in grey to my local B&M on Christmas Eve. HTH! Good luck finding them, I wore my rhubarb pair today and they're oh so cozy. (Online has rhubarb and chartruse still at 6.99.)

  154. This is a question about sizing...I wear a 0 in skirts, 2 in pants, and depending on the style of the top anywhere from a 0 to 4. What size to order for the Sydney dress? Does anyone know how it runs? Really appreciate any input. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  155. CGinC: The belly is a bit exposed in the Aubrey, but the front doesn't really fly away because the material is heavy, so it hangs down, at least that's my experience. I think it's a really attractive cut, and would buy the jacket in another color if it was still available. I wear mine over a turtleneck or crewneck - it fits fine over a cashmere crewneck (like 12-gauge knit), which makes the emsemble quite warm.

  164. I just placed an order over the phone for the Donegal Tweed EBlazer and the bow tie cardigan. I was debating the blazer in Pumpkin but this morning I saw they had one left in seagreen! I called ASAP and ordered the last 12T. I wear a 10T in the velvet ecole and it is just a little snug in the bust area. I figured I would size up and have a blazer to wear over a sweater. I hope the order fills since I love the seagreen color and think it is a more versatile color for winter than pumpkin. The cardigan was purchased on a whim to get the free shipping offer. I would have paid $15 to ship the jacket anyhow... I ordered a large in the cardigan for a looser fit and relaxed look. Hopefully the heather-pink color looks good IRL.

Look at the other items for sale - all JCrew. I'm guess it is her because she mentioned she has a bracelet for herself and for her sister, but said they had cracks in the resin. I agree....I don't wear much costume jewelry either...you can get the real thing for what JCrew charges for it's cheap crap! (and basically that is what it really is) I look for the real stuff on sale as well as vintage pieces. The quality is so much better.

I don't get this last one thing/frenzy either but retailers have been using it for years to get people (suckers) to buy things. When the SA's use this trick I just smile and keep walking...I tend not to want to buy what everyone else must have...craziness...I buy what I like not what others HAVE to have...

  177. La Belle Helene, thanks for the info on the Aubrey. I'm glad to hear that the front does not fly-away and that the fabric is heavy enough to keep it closed. Now, if only J Crew would bring it back! ARGH! BTW, did you size down? Based on the measurements I got from their CSR, I would have to size down 2 sizes to have it look a little less boxy and generous in the torso. What is your opinion of this? TIA!

  178. Is it just coincidence that original images on the other blog are labeled in the same manner as the images that belong to Rapunzel1921?

Sorry, I've looked at the posts too and I agree with the others--something is not right there.

  179. OT: I find myself suddenly coveting the flat glenbrae boot in black leather. Does anyone have a review of the boot. Thanks

  180. Anons @ 2:30, 9:15 and 12:01 - If it is Leigh, she is selling to rose chiffon T for a mere $100

  181. Eeeew- some just doesn't sound right here. It seems oddly like Leigh is a bit two faced. Remember when she was caught blogging under a different name, and she just forget to change hers?

Slastena- I think it's the same person. Because, rapunzel1921 does take her own pictures, as shown in the other listings, so why wouldn't she take one of the bracelet too? It's because she did it once already, and then just photoshopped Mickey's note out.

This is way too wierd and a bit deceptive!

  182. Anon @ 11:02,

I bought the Travel Trench in Dune. I tried on the navy and it is also a great color. You can't go wrong with either. And the lining is adorable:)

    HTH,

  183. Hi,
I have a Madeline purple dress size 2 that is just a little too big :-( I am going to return it but though I would offer it up to the JCAs first.
$165 + shipping (thats the price I paid for it plus I used a promotion)
    Thanks!

  184. Ebay resellers that buy things up, just to sell them at a higher price is disgusting. I had posted earlier that I saw a storybook bracelet in a store, and I bet that someone went and bought it just to resell it and make money.

From now on, maybe we should just email the location of certain items to fellow JCA's so resellers can't swoop in.

    Just my two cents:)

  185. KATE: I could not have said it any better myself.

  186. Kate- could that be Leigh? I think the profiles match that of someone who shops at that location! :(

  187. Kate2,

It was in King of Prussia near Philly that I saw the bracelet. Could be a coincidence, I don't know.

I cannot believe how many storybook bracelets have popped up on Ebay all of a sudden.

  188. FYI: I'm returning the grosgrain dog leash and collar in Punch to the Fashion Valley (San Diego store today). They are brand new, never used, still with tags. I actually really love them but the Medium was too big for my little girl.

  189. Leigh had a post begging for the Storybook bracelet and also a post begging for the rose tee. Maybe she got multiples of hot items and is selling them to finance her JCrew habit?

I have nothing against her just that some of the stuff she posts and says is fishy.....I just get that "feeling" and I don't know why...no reason..it is just "there"

Kate, I hope you never run into Leigh!

  191. What seems stranger is that she's asking for advice on how to circumvent the J.Crew policies. Why put it out there? If the intention is to draw readers, I'm truly turned off by her shananigins.

I did a quick google of rapunzel1921- she has very immature pictures of herself (if that is her) and a profile for that ebay id. Strangely enough, they seem to match up like twins. Just MY two cents!

  192. So is Leigh asking for help in finding the bracelet (on Dec 17) so that she can turn around and sell two for $360? WTF. God, I hate ebay resellers...this is just SHAMELESS.

  193. That whole story book charm bracelet story sounds suspicious to me. Something doesn't seem right. And I don't think that the manager at the KOP store would act like that without good reason. Hmmmm.

    ReplyDelete
  194. God, it's all just so wrong. If she's asking her viewers to give her tips on where to get certain items, and turn around and resell for an enormous profit, she totally deserves to get called out on it!

    ReplyDelete
  195. That whole "HELP" me post is just pathetic on Leigh's part...really honey deal with it!

I am sure the KOP store would help her if she wasn't trying to do something underhanded or had not done so before...weird gal.

  196. It says a lot when the manager at the store blacklists your dumbass. Every j.crew I've been to, out here in the midwest, knows me by name, and is very helpful when I need the assistance. With that being said, I don't take advantage of the situation or pull any fast ones on the store either. Sounds like she's one to watch!

  197. That rapunzel 1921 on ebay grossed over $18,000 on ebay last year....

    ReplyDelete
  198. You mean Leigh grossed over $18k? Girl has some 'splaining to do...

  199. Hey Kate-

Check this out. Leigh and Leigh both shop at KOP!
