A big "thank you!" to FabulousFloridaMommy who shared with us her review of this {beautiful} jacket. The following is her product review:

Oh How I Adore My Maggie Jacket!

I recently purchased the Maggie Jacket in Camel because of its shape, and the basic, neutral color. I have been anxiously awaiting for J.Crew to make a flattering, classic piece in a NON- bright color, and this one fits the bill perfectly. The fabric is beautiful...it is called *Double-Serge Jacket*, so I am assuming it is the same fabric as the Double Serge Pencil Skirt that everyone has been raving about. The tailoring and quality on this jacket are impeccable, and the fit is reminiscent of my Herringbone Bella Jacket, but withou
t the high collar. I love the inset waistband with the side tabs as well as the vertical pockets on the front of the jacket, as they give it an even more *feminine* feel.

Sizing: I purchased the size 4 after calling Customer Service for measurements…I am normally a 4 or 6 in J.Crew Jackets, as I sometimes size up to fit my broad shoulders, but the Maggie fits nicely on me in the 4 when wearing a tank, button down shirt, or thin sweater. However, I would have needed to size up to the 6 if I intended to layer or wear a thicker sweater underneath it. The jacket is longer on me than it is on the model in the picture…I am 5’4”, and it hits me at the hip, as described. The sleeves are long…they hit at my wrist when they are cuffed, and at the top of my thumb when they are not cuffed. The sizing of the Maggie seems to run consistent with the Andrea Jacket, Tulip Jacket, and Lucille Coat, if you are familiar with the fit and sizing on any of them.

I personally intend to wear the Maggie as a Blazer...I tried on the Madeline Double Cloth Coat as well as the Peacoat in my B&M on Sunday, and the Maggie is definitely NOT as heavy as either of them. The jacket can easily be dressed up or down, and is extremely versatile and flattering. I really do adore this jacket, and know for a fact that it will be my *go to* piece this Fall/Winter.

"Thanks!" again to FabulousFloridaMommy for her fabulous review of this lovely jacket. :) It's too bad this jacket is "Catalog/jcrew.com only" because I would love to see the different shades in person (especially the "deep yellow" and the "heather bright berry" colors).

What are your thoughts on the Maggie double serge jacket? Do you love it or would you leave it? Do you already own this jacket (or tried it on)? If so, what are your first-hand impressions (and would you recommend others to purchase it)? :)

  1. Thank you for posting this review. IT has proven very helpful. Can anyone give some detail on the collar of this lovely jacket? It looks like it may be double in the pictures?? Thanks

  2. Jordan: The website describes the collar as *Fixed collar with rounded edge and inside standing collar*, which is true...sorry that wasn't included in the review. :)

  3. Great review FFM. Makes me want it!

  4. The Maggie looks like the the Cooper jacket, which I recall reading FFM loved too. Thanks for the review.

  5. FFM: Reading your review makes me even more anxious for my Maggie to arrive! Thanks!!

  6. Thanks for the review:) Glad you liked the coat but this one is not for me...just too plain and simple but I can see how others like it.....I just have so many basics I am always on the look out for unique pieces that really stand out.....just me:)

  8. Congrats FFM - it sounds beautiful. My black Maggie got a tracking number today...so it is on the way. Can't wait - will be looking for some Polyvore outfits on this one!

  10. Thanks FFM!! Great review. I got my tracking number last night, YAY!!!!! I'll let you know what I think once I receive it. I'm between an 8 and a 10 in JC jackets. My berry trimmed astrid is an 8 and fits great. My Andrea is a 10, which is a little roomy. I ended up ordering an 8 in the Maggie and I hope it fits!!! Wish me luck.

  11. i ordered mine in black sz0, hopefully it will fit. i loved the fit of the lexington in sz 0 while the bella was too big. i had a tough time deciding between the yellow and the black and ultimately went with yellow cuz i'm boring ;P.

  12. I received my berry colored one last night. Wearing it today with my camel university pants!! LOVE it. Soft fabric, very fitted (looks tailored). The double-collar is not thick, and to be honest, isn't that noticeable.

If anyone is curious about the heather bright berry color, the same color was in my store in the cambridge cable sweaters--my favorite SA helped me find it. I think it is a beautiful color--but this color (similar to the wild rose in the past) is my "signature" color, so I could be biased.

If the price comes down, I would definitely buy another one. OR if grey comes out, I would get as well.

It is definitely a blazer-type for me, and I wouldn't wear it as outerwear in my climate, but it is a substantial jacket. Glad I held off on the rhubarb Fiona and went with this!

  13. Regard warmth. I am in Chas, SC where it rarely dips below freezing at the height of winter. Would you consider it warm enough for outdoors in a mild climate.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It was 45 degrees at my house this morning, and I wore the Maggie with a sweater underneath and felt fine. I don't know if that is mild weather or not.

I spent 2 winters in Cleveland, and now anything below 50 is freezing cold to me! I think I never thawed out. I'm the person always wearing a heavy coat, gloves, scarf, and a hat from November through March.

  15. FFM -- great review!

It sounds like many people are going to like this one. However, I'm with anonymous @ 8:26a. It's going to be a pass for me. It's nice to like one less thing with all the pretty new items/colors available.

  16. My 2P in yellow just got cancelled, so I am hoping I'll at least get the 2 I ordered. I'm very curious about it, especially after this review! Thanks for the great review, FFM.

  17. Thanks for the review! I can't wait to get mine.

  18. Again I like it and again it does not come in my size. J.Crew spies reading this blog, will you please make more things in 16 next year?

  19. Is maggie's fabric as nice as tuesday's?

  20. This is a gorgeous coat! I'm so happy to hear good reviews on it. If I needed a good, quality coat and had extra money for it, I'd get this in a second, probably in the camel color since it is so classic. Congrats to all of you who own and love it :)

  21. Also, I got my chambray swing skirt yesterday. I'd asked for some input on it in another post. I can definitely see how it is different than on the website, but it wasn't as short as I was expecting it to be from the comments. For anyone who has it, I'd love to hear some ideas on how you wear it--I'm still undecided on whether or not to keep it, but if you all have found it to be worth your while, I may hang on to it.

  22. Hi FFM: I read that you tried on the Madeline coat as well - can you just briefly give a review of it, like the cutting and fit - were the shoulders big, did it make you look nice and slim etc. I'm thinking of getting that in Majestic Heather Purple (or that fancy name for purple) as my main Winter Coat. Thanks!

  23. for some reason this jacket strikes me as the kind that Betty Draper would definitely don while horse riding....

    it's so classically feminine

  24. OT: I tried the garden bracelet (metallic grey) in the store ready to buy it, but it was too big! I was so sad it wasn't adjustable :(

  25. My black and camel Maggies both got their tracking numbers this morning!!! I was half certain they'd be cancelled, but no! Woo!

  26. how are the pockets on this jacket? it seems like pockets on jcrew's jackets have gotten smaller in the past couple of years (can't fit my iphone in them) - would an iphone fit in the maggie jacket's pocket? thanks!

  27. Thanks for the excellent review FFM! it sounds like a marvelous blazer. I too had been debating on the camel vs the black but decided to go with the black. If this blazer works on me, I can see picking it up in the bright berry color too.

  28. Amanda: I tried on the Madeline Coat in Black and LOVE it! :) I hope to purchase it when it goes on sale, as well. The size 4 fit me, but I will size up to a 6 in order to be able to wear a sweater under it. The coat came to just above my knee, and actually reminds me of the silhouette of the Maggie, only longer...it is very beautiful and flattering. :) HTH! Let me know if you have any other questions.

  29. Flaneuse: Please let me know if the buttons on the Black Maggie are black like on the website or brown...when I called CS to pre-order, she had gotten the black one from the Mock Store and said the buttons are brown...can't wait to know for sure. :) TIA!

  30. Leanne: While the pockets on this jacket are indeed small, I do believe it will fit an I-Phone. :)

  31. thank you so much for the great review!

Would anyone be able to compare the thinkness/warmth of the Maggie to any of the following jackets?

-- Herringbone Bella from last year
    -- Lexington from last year
-- Herringbone Fiona or Ecole of this year.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anon @5:08: I have the Herringbone Bella and the Maggie is thicker...I can't compare warmth since I haven't worn either for an extended period of time yet. The Maggie is midweight wool, and I would consider the Bella to be a lighter weight. HTH!

  34. It's a pass for me too :(

I fell in love with Fiona's ruffles and Penny jacket online (until I tried it on)

I don't think I'd notice Maggie in a store (maybe I'm just hung up on classic peacoats-Maggie kind of looks like a suiting jacket to me)

Congrats to people who bought it, I'm sure FFM will come up with great sets for this jacket!

  35. Dear FabulousFloridaMommy,

I am Anon@5:08, and thank you so much again.
After reading your review, I am so tempted!!

I love my herringbone Bellas (notice plural?) so much, except I wish they were made of more substantial wool, because the weather in fall/srping tends to be fairly cold where I live. (But not enough cold to take out a thick winter coat.) Oh, and I love the camel color!

    ReplyDelete
  36. My black and camel Maggies came today! They are utterly fabulous. :)

They're also much more substantial than I expected -- if you live in a warmer climate, you could easily use it as your "cold" weather jacket/coat.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Kitchy7: Congratulations! I'm so glad you like them! Can you please tell me if the buttons on the Black Maggie are black or brown? Also, are you keeping both of them?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I received my black Maggie today and unfortunately, it did not fit...I am on the other end of the "size spectrum" from FFM. I ordered this in a 14 tall ( I am 5'11, 40D) and it was proportioned totally wrong for me. I really was trying to WILL my bod into this :) but to no avail. Just a warning to those of you with broad shoulders, long waists, and "ample busts"-this MAY not be the blazer for you. Although it fitted me poorly, I was impressed with the quality of the fabric and with the workmanship. The wool is VERY substantial and it is lined in fog colored satin throughout the body and golden cypress satin in the sleeves. The sleeves lend themselves well to turning up. Compared to other JCrew blazers and especially to the sweaters (most of which are poor quality compared to what was offered "back in the day"-I've been a customer for a l-o-n-g time :) )I do think that this is worth the $250 ($260 for tall) price point. FFM the buttons are BLACK on the black jacket :).

    ReplyDelete
  39. FFM - the buttons on the black Maggie are also black. I am indeed keeping both of them! I find them very classic and hope I will be wearing them for the next decade!

  40. I just got my maggies and unfortunately they are a tad small.

So for reference - 6 in andrea, 8 in lucille, and 8 is needed in Maggie.

The wool is very soft and not at all itchy, and the workmanship is very good. There are some pin stitching details around the jacket. The pockets are slanted, and on the smaller size. I got both a 8P and 6 and the sleeves on the petite are just right and when rolled up is the bracelet length. Regular is a little long not rolled up. I'm 5'2" btw.

This jacket fits into the 'classic with a twist' category.

  41. I just got my Deep Yellow Maggie in the mail and I LOVE it! The color is similar in pigmentation to Honey Glaze, however, it is more of a true yellow and a tad brighter (but not as bright as, say, Maize or a neon Citron).

I got it in 10P and I usually wear mediums or 8s in most J Crew tops. The shoulders definitely are small (which is good because I have narrow shoulders) but (similar to the Fiona and Lady Day on me) the uppers arms are just a tad snug but with a fitted shirt under are just fine.

The shape is just to die for and I find fits my small upper frame well and has a nice structured fitted waist. The buttons are a lighter camel tortoise shell and really look nice with the saturated yellow. The lining is ivory colored. I think Deep Yellow is a color that would look great on a lot of people (I'm very fair with pink undertones) and the wool is soft and not as significantly textured as other double cloth coats.

    Simply put: Cute and fun!

  42. Thanks FFM for the great review. I will be ordering the Camel Size 6 tomorrow, can't wait to try it on!
