The Return of the "Welcome Offer" {yey!}

J.Crew is offering free shipping on orders of $150+ with promo code FS1008W. This offer expires 10/9/08.

I know things are turning around (in a positive way) at J.Crew because they have returned the "welcome offer" for new customers! :) "Welcome Offers" usually consist of a promo code for new customers who sign up with J.Crew. This was a regular feature at J.Crew until the website upgrade occurred. (Then all the "welcome offers" stopped as they were trying to fix the system.)

Are you excited to see these "welcome offers" return? If you are a new customer who has recently signed up your email with J.Crew, have you received a "Welcome Offer"? :)

  1. Yay for another code...STILL wish they would send out the FreeShip/NoMinimum codes again, or at least something with a lower amount...even $100 would do. :)

I TRULY hope issues with the website and shipping really are getting better! I really miss the old pre-upgrade days!

  2. ffm: Peekaboo works for orders $100.00 until tomorrow. It doesn't have to be Crewcuts.

So far so good with the web orders lately, I am receiving a big order today so I am keeping my fingers crossed. (I also have 2 others on the way, I have been so bad lately, after reading thids blog on the weekend I had to have something Plum)!

  3. FFM: I remember those wonderful days of free shipping with no minimums! :) That is actually when my shopping at J.Crew increased by like threefold. ;)

CasualCrew: Congrats on the web orders! I hope you get them soon. :)

  4. Thanks casual-crew! I had forgotten that code is still good...now that I think about it, J.Crew usually sends the $100 codes for Crewcuts...thankfully it works on regular merchandise too! :)

  5. FFM: Yes, that's true, but the best way to use it would be to also combine it with red phone ordering (for full-price items) and I'd feel weird ordering items for me and then using a Crewcuts discount code. Don't know if they call you out for that. So if they had free shipping codes for $100 womens orders, that would still be super!

  6. I have made good use of the PEEKABOO code as well! Yay!!

  7. I personally think and know you ALL agree that J Crew should offer flat rate shipping price such as $7. And on occasion offer combined free shipping with addl discount such as Banana does. This would entice the consistent buyers and the now and again J Crew shopper. They actually OVER CHARGE for shipping which makes or breaks the decision to buy something many times!
It actually kept me from buying until I perhaps got an email that I could get free shipping. I know everyone on this blog agrees they would spend more often if it was reasonable flat rate and on occasion offer a discount with free shipping combined. Getting one or the other is just not something that many people are accustomed to--the other retail giants have set us up to believe that we can get these deals and deserve it as a loyal customer. I know they think we are whiners but this is what other similar retailers offer.
I think even more so if you have their card! That is the A-number one thing that sucks about their card--no free shipping. That would change EVERYTHING!

  8. Okay--now I am POed! I have been doing so well in the last couple weeks with J Crew and all of my (way too many orders) and they just canceled 2 of my things from early AM last Friday!! I am beside myself. Just when I made comment about how great thing were going-grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :(

  9. It is so great to see things coming around. The company has made some great changes - it just took a bit to get them all up and running.

Casual-Crew - thanks for the clue about Peekaboo not needing to be crewcuts! You just saved me $25!

  10. Off topic: Can anyone comment on the fit of the airy-knotted blouse? Does it fit true to size? Thanks!

  11. ANyone have a review for the following items...
    - Hammered-silk soutache tank in bright peacock
    - Solid silk Elizabeth halter in fresh clover

Looking for something to put under the prima pant suit in black for luncheon. THanks for you help, Lisa.

  12. j- i have the airy knotted blouse and i actually really hate the fit. it's going back next time i have some other things to return. it does fit TTS i think, i am usually a 0/ xs and that's what i got. but it's kind of too long to look normal. there's just something about the way it's cut that makes it awkward for me. i am also pear shaped though so sometimes tops that fit but are too long bother me because they're too tight on my hips.

  13. RE: the elizabeth halter,

I love this shirt! I actually have it in the clover. Note that it runs BIG. My normal size is medium, sometimes large, and I got a small in this shirt. The clover is pretty with navy, black, or gray, and could be fun with jeans for a night out.

I think it would be pretty under a suit, but the shoulders are cut away a bit so if you took the jacket off you might feel its a bit "haltery".

    Thumbs up on this one!

  14. RE: the elizabeth halter,

Same here. I have elizabeth halter in the fresh clover. As jliz says, it runs big, but goes well with almost any colors. I usually wear it under cardigan or jacket. You might want to check it at polyvore.

  15. Is there anyone willing to measure the knee and leg opening of their current fall '08 matchstick jeans? I know it's a long shot. I'm trying to decide between them and Paige Melrose. Thanks to anyone who can do this.

  16. Thanks jliz & naomi for the feedback. I normally would wear a small in the t-s and tanks and an "old" six in dresses and tops but the new sizing has me wonderingn if I should order an xs (totally unrealistic that a B36 could get into a normal xs). I am ok with the shoulders being haltery - I actually like my shoulders it is just other parts I am not willing to expose! Lisa.

Meant to ask-who has bought the Distressed vintage/ripped up:) jeans that they show all the models in?
    Thoughts?? Fit??

Was there ever a blog about this--I could see people being opinionated about these:)

  19. Re: the airy knotted blouse

I have one and love it! I am considering purchasing additional colors. The shoulder opening is very wide, so definitely needs a strapless bra. Not sure if this cut would work well for more well-endowed women?

The shirt is also quite long -- almost tunic length, but without an A line or babydoll fit. It's pretty fitted through the hips.

I wouldn't have guessed that the fit would be flattering, but I love it.

  20. Thank you Melissa! I think I'll hold off unless I see it in the store and can try it on first.

  21. pixel girl - sorry, I skimmed by your post, but thank you too for the feedback! I'm on the fence about it...maybe if another % off final sale code comes out I'll get it.

  22. For those of you who are new to J.Crew, learn from my experiences and BEWARE of J.Crew suits! After what I learned today, I will never buy another one.

I bought a new suit from J.Crew in March, and I have worn it maybe 10 times since then. I noticed that the hem of the skirt had fallen out, so I took it to a repair shop. I was very disappointed that the hem had fallen out, but I was even more surprised to learn why it had fallen out. It turns out the hem was attached with TAPE, not even a seam! Apparently tape isn't a very good way to hem a skirt, surprise surprise. Needless to say, I am getting it seamed.

For the price J.Crew charges and for the quality the advertise, their suiting certainly doesn't match up to their claims. I'm done with their suiting.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Steph - which suit was it i.e. wool gab, super 120s, wool crepe?

I'm so sorry to hear about your experiance. I would definetly call into CS. It *might* be a defective skirt, in which case they would cover the cost of tailoring the hem. Actually to be honest, either way it is worth a phone call to see if they will cover the cost of the repair. That is really unacceptable. Something similar happened to me on a pair of Tierney Capri sandals, I wore maybe 3 times (and took with me on a recent vacation). On my way home, I felt like something was dragging on the bottom of my shoe, looked down to see the leather sole separated from the bottom of the shoe and was almost completely off. B/c Jcrew GLUES their soles together rather than using stitching - called into customer service, told them about my predicament, they insisted ti was a defective pair and allowed me to return them. They also offered to pay the cost of a repair but I just couldn't be bothered.

Might be worth a phone call. Ask to speak to a supervisor though since I don't think an ordinary CSR will be able to help you. THey should at least cover the cost of the repair for you.

  24. I have also had problems with the quality of JCrew shoes and boots, so I'm always hesitant to pay full price. My Jackson boots, which I love, have a problem with the treads separating from the heel of the boot, and I had a pair of braided Cayman (I think that was the style) flip flops that I paid full price for break on the first day I wore them (the thong broke away from the shoe bed so it was all flop and no flip--I'm lucky I didn't break my neck). The CSR's at my b&m were very nice--I brought the receipt and they credited me the price of the merchandise and the shipping, but I've been pretty wary ever since.

  25. Seaming tape to hem an expensive suit is unforgivable, really. Very, very bad, and a sure fire way to lose steady customers.

  26. Well, this whole code process is still annoying! Sometimes, there are j crew employees who take the educ./student discount off of everything. When I order online, they said to email from the school email address requesting the discount be applied. Most of the time that works fine. Other times they say "not to be used with the free shipping codes...only one code per order." I thought it was mentioned here that the discount is NOT a code or offer, it's always offered, just not a double discount on items, such as with a 20% everything code....THEN, no add'l 15% off.

Thank goodness my B&M store offeres it ALL THE TIME ON EVERYTHING!

    Thanks for letting me vent.

  27. steph - I agree with A. Definitely give customer service a call and let them know. I've been shopping at J.Crew for 17 years and I have never known the brand to not stand behind their quality. Back in the mid/late nineties, I used to bring back shoes that had worn out too soon and they would give me a new pair. Granted, their policies have changed a bit since then, but still...

J.Crew prides themselves on quality, so make it loud and clear when something doesn't measure up. Suits are something they should especially guarantee. If they don't hear about it, they won't know that we have a problem with something.

If anything, I think that J.Crew customer service bends over backwards to help me, even when other people messed up somewhere along the line. If it weren't for the fantastic customer service, J.Crew wouldn't be J.Crew (and many of the company's latest rounds of sins would not be forgiven).

    Let us know what happens!

  28. anon @ 6:17: I feel your pain. On the last 3 phone orders I have placed, the cs has not allowed my teacher discount, instead making me pick one. So, after the first 2 shipped, I emailed and asked if they would give me the discount. I had a quick reply (less than 30 minutes - and they had to reply to a different email b/c my school disctrict blocks almost EVERYTHING). Anyway, I was told that I would get the discount on both orders as a credit back to my card. Once the 3rd order ships, I will email and ask for the credit on that one and hopefully get the same response.

  29. Thanks for your supportive comments, everyone! Now that I have cooled off a bit, I will call CS tomorrow.

For those of you who were wondering, it was a wool crepe suit that I bought.

Also, I feel your pain about the inconsistent application of the student/educator discount. I always email to get it after I place an order online, and I have never gotten it if I have used a free shipping or discount code. I have even gotten rude emails back in response to my request. I know I should just call on the phone and order, but it's a pain when I have to wait on hold for several minutes when the items I want are in my cart and selling out fast!

  30. Does anyone know the "true color" of deep persimmon? is it a true red color or is it a faded berry like color? i haven't seen it in person yet.

PS: i worked at J.Crew for a period of time and I had a customer come in with her Fulham Peep toes, and her heel had broken off. The Manager bought her a new pair of shoes on the house. I may or may not be tempted to break off the heel of one of my old pairs and bring them in :)

  31. anon 10:47: I have the Tartine in deep persimmon and I'd call it a deep reddish-orange, more on the orange side. HTH! :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. anon 10:47pm - I have the Tuesday trench in deep persimmon. Like Weab mentioned, it's a red with orange overtones. When you first glance at it, it's the red that you see first. When you look at it longer, you start to see the orange shades. I love the color, very vibrant. Keep in mind though that the colors differ by fabric even though they have the same name.
