J.Crew's Additional 20% Off Final Sale Gets Shortchanged

RatsOnParade made an excellent observation in the "J.Crew Website Update: Incentive to Check! :)" post. She observed that J.Crew changed the terms of the "20% off the final sale" with the code EXTRA20 on their website. This offer use to expire Monday, 7/28/08 (click here for image of original offer) but now it expires this Friday, 7/25/08 (as shown in the image above). I have to be honest, I am not sure why J.Crew would do this. :(

Why do you think J.Crew would reduced the number of days during this promotional offer? Do you think the original offer of until Monday was just a mistake by J.Crew which they fixed at some point today? Or do you think some issue provoked J.Crew to reduced the EXTRA20 offer until Friday?

  1. Maybe it was a mistake. Look at this email I received late this afternoon regarding 'mistakes' they have made:

"From your recent order, we shipped your items in multiple packages to ensure the quickest delivery. During this process, we have discovered that we did not charge you for all the items that were shipped. We wanted to notify you that we are in the process of rectifying this and you will see your final charge appear on the payment method you originally used in the next 24 to 48 hours. We truly apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, and want you to know how much we appreciate your understanding. We have been working to make some updates to our website and systems and know that we have definitely hit some bumps along the way. We are working hard to fix them and can ensure you that the changes willdefinitely be worth it."

Now you know I have received shipping emails for items that shipped after the fact...maybe even twice. Argh, I'm going to be so annoyed if I get overcharged!

  2. egads - i can't even guess what this is about. i'm so curious about "the upgrade" happening this coming AM. Maybe they will update all the sale stuff as well??

  3. I really don't care at this point. I just received a package that only includes one of the two dresses I ordered, but I was charged for both! I had enough of Jcrew website. I am just curious that how can they act as if everything is running smoothly while everything is so buggy. I don't even want to call the CS, they'll either put me to wait forever, or just cut my call. I just wrote them an email, if they don't ship my second dress or refund me within 5 days, I'll decline that payment to my credit card company. It seems like customer are not paying for the cost of their mess up system.

  4. Rach:

I am so sorry for you. My case is opposite: I was overcharged. Today I was supposed to receive two items, but I found out that there was only one item in the box, although the invoice charged me for two items!!! In fact, this is not the first time that J.Crew charged me for items which they failed to ship by mistake.

For everyone who orders multiple items at the same time: you might want to check whether invoice and items are correct.

Dear J.Crew, you are losing your credit score!!!

  5. Alexis:

I've noticed that J.Crew has changed the sale period from "Monday" to "Friday". It seems that J Crew system can not only count money they charged, but also can not count number of days correctly...

  6. naomi: I believe I was already charged for the items I've ordered that were shipped in multiple packages. The fact I'm receiving this email from them makes me nervous. I've been sitting back reading everyone else's horrible credit card experiences thinking 'wow, glad that didn't happen to me' & now I'm scared to pull up my cc acct! Hopefully there is only one item they missed billing which generated the email. They are scary right now aren't they?

  7. The sale is so stale and prices have not been further reduced. In fact going to their website is depressing now. So, I doubt whether this 20% off incentive is going to generate volume sales for them.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Oh I'm so sorry to hear about folks having to deal with these multiple charges! I've been reading so many stories about this whole thing, I can't believe JCrew is being so DISHONEST going on a cc charging rampage but not knowing if it has anything to ship (and just blaming 'bugs' in the system). I get furious just reading about the incidents. I believe one reader said she had to get harsh and nasty in order to get her refund. No one should have to go through that to get what's owed to them.

What kind of company thinks it's ok to act like this? I know we all love the fall stuff, (me included) but let's not just forget all this never happened when it's over and the fact that they took people's money for no reason (ie. no item to ship), had them pay interest on balances that shouldn't be there, waste time on the phone with customer service that could've been spent with their families etc.

Gift cards are nice, but still, time is money too isn't?

Rach, anon at 11:57, Naomi and all others, I truly hope things get sorted out soon for you guys.

(So sorry for the long post/rant)

  9. So the website just completely crashed. All it is right now is a white screen with this:

    Error:

    JSP_EXECUTION_FAILED

Sadly it does not seem like the situation is getting any better.

  10. I cannot believe the high incidence of shipping & charging errors, and the fact that it has been going on for almost a month now... This is completely unacceptable for a supposedly high-end retailer! And don't even get me started on the ongoing buggy website disaster, which is completely unprofessional, but doesn't rise to the level of fraud and illegality like the charging issues...

  11. Anonymous 12:59pm, 1:12am & 1:59am:

I agree with you all. A simple question comes up: Is this really a system "upgrade"? What was actually upgraded? It sounds like huge system "downgrade" to me.

  12. Hi Girls,
The 20% off by "EXTRA20" was meant to be used with the final sale items in their sale section right? I just purchased the Lucie D'Orsay shoes for $129.99 and the 20% off coupon also worked! D'Orsay shoes were not in the sale section and the listing price seemed $168 (original). But as I clicked on its link, the price showed up as $129.99. More surprisingly, the coupon worked. Has anyone experienced the same thing? Using coupon for "regular" sale items?

  13. JCrew is no longer answering emails. I have sent them 4 emails in the past week. All came back with a standard response even though each question was different...in essence...they are too backlogged with emails so they aren't going to answer them anymore and say to phone instead. I wrote them a nasty response saying I live overseas and was told by CS to email. I don't expect to hear from them. I am not forgetting how they have treated me over this...lost orders, overcharging and now not responding to emails! I am not the least bit excited to see any fall stuff. I won't be buying anything from them.

  14. I finally 2 out of 4 items yesterday from my July 2 order. I was charged for all 4. I know some people haven't had any problems with JCrew, others have and gotten some free gift cards. I have had 6 different problems and received no gift cards, etc. I just won't stand to be treated this way as a customer when there are plenty of unique boutiques to shop at for clothing. Plus, I won't see myself coming and going...I have spend close to $900 per month at JCrew in the past 11 months. The last month I have cut that in 1/2 and this upcoming month will be zero. I just ordered a bunch of fall stuff at Boden.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't think the email was a mistake...I think they changed their minds AND the offer...maybe since they are "supposed" to launch the new Fall line, they figured they don't want everyone to shop the sale, but the new full priced items instead???

As for the upgrade fiasco...I am still almost in disbelief that this has been going on for ONE MONTH this Sunday (the upgrade occurred one month ago on Saturday). I placed my pre-upgrade order one month ago this Friday, have still not received all of the items OR the price adjustments and credits back to my Credit Card...I am still hard pressed to understand how this could POSSIBLY happen to a company as well renowned as J.Crew...it truly boggles the mind...sigh...

  16. Well shoot - I'd figure if they're going to only have the 20% off for one more day, they'd maybe throw us a bone and put more items in the sale section. But I got up this morning and nothing changed! Same boring old shoes on the front page, same boring old crap in the sale section.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Almost 7am, and those fugly shoes are still there...

    ReplyDelete
  18. ratsonparade: I'm equally unimpressed with the boring sale site this morning. It's so stale at this point! The same mistakes have been left online for weeks. At least I'll get to work on time today and save some $$.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Angela 20% off coupon worked for regular sales items for me also!
I purchased Daisy eyelet tunic top #: 93616, Flamenco-dot popover blouse #: 94196, Embossed halter long beach dress #: 91297, Luxe stretch cotton twill dress #: 93895, Metallic-leather uptown tote #: 87984 - All regular sales. I don't like final sales, in case something didn't work out for me, it's a waste of money because I am no in U.S. and it's hard to sell those stuff later.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If 20% off is working on non-FS merchandise, I can't imagine they're loading the fall collection before this coupon ends. Unless they will conveniently 'fix' the website so the coupon doesn't work on non-FS.
    Shenanigans!

By the way I bought 4 great t-shirt bra's at the Gap yesterday. I also had to stand in a line of 10 people. Even the Gap employee's were stunned at the turn out in their store. I have never purchased undergarments from Gap before but I have to tell you this bra is awesome with perfect 'coverage' and support without the 'my boobs looks two cups bigger' padding. I hope they hold up. Here's the link if you're interested:

  21. Good morning ladies! Unfortunately I haven't seen any noticeable changes on the website either- I am so disappointed. I am glad I didn't wake up at 4AM (like I thought I was going to) this morning.

Ratsonparade, Mary, Julie: I am with you all- I am also unimpressed with the sale this morning and no new arrivals!

Rach: I really hope J.Crew doesn't overcharge you that. That email they sent you would make me nervous about being overcharged as well.

Anon at 11:57 PM & 4:21 AM & Naomi: What happened to your is awful- they cann't charge you for two items when you only got one! :(

Naomi: I agree with you that the sales now tend to last until Friday now. I remember the sales lasting longer in the past, but maybe that is wishful thinking on my part. :)

Mom-NYC: I know what you mean- "downgrade" is right! I can't believe how tired their sale is. Their sale section use to be so awesome that I would check every day- now I couldn't care less.

FabulousFloridaMommy: I know what you are saying! A whole month this has been going on, with no end in sight. I keep hoping it will get better soon, but then another week passes by. I also can't understand how this is happening to a firm like J.Crew!

3carmelitos & Angela: I actually updated the coupon section and post with your great find on the code. Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anony@12:59 I agree with you completely. Nicely put!

  23. I have a feeling that the 20% off full price items is a mistake - the way things have been going with J Crew, they'll send an 'oopsy, we're sorry' email and proceed to charge full price on non-sale items.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think Jennifer is correct. I read an article from a few years back where they accidentally listed a cashmere sweater at a low price, that was the incorrect price. They notified customers who purchased the sweaters at the low 'wrong' price & proceeded to charge them the correct 'higher' price.

Exept yesterday in the store the sales rep said he had to sell the jamie sweater to me for 30% off since the sign was still posted (they forgot to take it down the night before).

How come the same rules aren't applying to the website?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Jennifer: There is somekind of confusion here... It's not 20% of full price, it's 20% of regular sale items that you can find browising the web catalog (not sale section).

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm sure you were all just as disappointed as I was when I loaded jcrew.com with credit card in hand (I know I know), only to find the same tired old site. I wasn't sure how to channel my frustration constructively, so I tried to think about things I like as much as I like fall clothes. Well, there is now a lovely open-faced blueberry pie cooling on my kitchen counter ;)

  28. Ugh, I would love to take advantage of the coupon on regular sale items, but I'm too afraid to trust J Crew with my credit card. :(

    ReplyDelete
  29. Even if you browse the on-line catalog, the hot sale prices are merely phantoms. Select the item on sale & the sale price & sale price colors are non-existent.

Same s*/# different day (a month of it anyway).

Let's each send a "No-So-Happy Anniversary" email. Sorry honey, this just isn't working out.

  30. Do you think that they will lower the price of the French-stripe tie jacket?? I'm hoping there is a lot left and they will when they update the site. I want it bad but it's a little too steep for me right now!!

(If anyone purchased one of these sweaters final sale that they want to offload I'm a size Small :)

My hope is that they changed the date of the 20% off cause they are waiting for the sale items from the stores and they will have 30% off again. Wishful thinking??? If they did I think that sweater would be the only item in my bag along with some buttery twill trousers. Is everyone saving up for fall items?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Maybe beacuse over the weekend new arrivals will be added.. and summer items will be pushed to the sale section and they are not really ready to offer a discount on those items yet... its all about dolla's and cents for the stockholders!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Angela, you're right. The 20% off worked for non-final sale items also. I just bought the Jaime jacket for $64 down from $138, the Daisy eyelet blouse for $64 from $128. I know they are having problems with charging and delivery right now but the more than 50% discount for these items is too good to pass up, at least for me. Hope nothing goes wrong with delivering my order.

    ReplyDelete
  33. jcrewbag: I bought the French tie jacket for 49.99 in the stores plus the extra discount a while ago at thr Columbus Circle store in NYC. Are looking for an even lower price? If not, just call and ask CS to honor the store price plus their current 20% discount. I love that sweater! Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  34. newyork: no that price would work for me. I bet I have to be in the store to order though?? I'll give it a shot.

    ReplyDelete
  35. wow 17 minutes for the next rep. i did call the store, no more left. i wonder why it was so much cheaper. my store didn't even stock those. thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  36. This is strange... am I the only one having problems with the J.Crew website? I know Sally mentioned in a previous post that she wasn't having any problems. The sale items won't pull up- it just says "Sorry, search is not working at this time. Please try again later." and when I click on an item in my shopping cart, it just brings me back to the homepage.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 3carmelitos: I didn't catch that it was regular sale not regular priced items. I already made the appropriate updates. Thanks for catching that! :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. jcewbug: no, what you can do is place the order over the phone. Then tell them you saw it at that price in the stores. Tell them the Columbus Circle location, and ask them to call to verify. I haven't seen those sweaters for a while now, but hopefully they can still check the price.

My last purchase was the polka dot San telmo two days ago. Gotta lock my credit card now or won't have money to shop for fall!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Is there a second 20% discount coupon code floating around? The Extra20 is shown on the FS section of the site & clearly states it's for items in their "sale site" only. The only "sale site" is in a state of "final" sale at this time. So they are experiencing yet another glitch in their system if you are able to use the coupon code on sale items not listed in FS.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Lynn: the website for me seems to be working okay (as far as the website goes). I use Firefox, which I believe is the same browser you use. Maybe you can update your Firefox (under Help, "Check for updates") and that would help.

JCrewBug: That wait is too long. I have heard from others that their wait was 45 min. Anything over 2 minutes is too long for me! ;)

Rach: I hear you about holding out (online anyways) for awhile. :)

Daniel: I think what you wrote is probably right. It would make sense for them to wait a bit and then push the summer items over to the sale section.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm so tired of the sale section I could SCREAM! I hope you all are right, and there is going to be a major update when the fall stuff finally gets added to the website. I mean, when are the florentine print items and the belle skirt going to go on sale for goodness sake???

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anyone getting an error when trying to check out? AGH!

    ReplyDelete
  43. rach: don't look at the sale portion, nothing new there. Go to the regular items or even new arrivals and click the items that interest you. Some are on sale and you can apply the 20% code too (Jamie, daisy, kayla, etc.) They did not bother to put these items on the sale portion, don't know why but the codes will work for these too.

  44. newyork: got my sweater! you're the best!

  45. Ann Taylor Loft has really adorable clothes and they give educator's 20% off, even on sale items...I purchased 2 jackets yesterday for $46, one was $40 and the other was only $6 (it's the Blue Madras that looks like the J.Crew Madras jacket)...the clothes are very well made, too...it seems to be a feasible alternative to J.Crew. :)

  48. I remember one time JCrew had 50% off sale items in the store. I went to one store near my office in NYC and they were out of something in my size. So THE SAME DAY after work I went to another store just to find out that the sale discount was reduced to 25%. So 50% off at lunch... 25% off in the evening. So this change of heart on jcrew part does not even surprise me. BTW, i talked to a sales person that day and he told me that he was as surprised as I was that they got a call from corporate office that day to stop 50%. He also told me that i should "throw a fit" about that. I would have, but they also didnt have what I was looking for.

  50. Kristina: Angela & 3carmelitos (in this post) have found that the code works for regular sale items. So I guess maybe JCrew figured out how to stop that and just have it apply to final sale items. In any case, thanks for letting us know! :)

FabulousFloridaMommy: $6 for a jacket is beyond an awesome deal! Fantastic find!!!

Mekiki: I will have to definitely try the search feature! :)

El: First, 50% off sale is fantastic! I have never seen one of those (but I would love to!) ;) Also, it seems weird to change the terms of the sale during the day. I mean from one day to another is okay, but on the same day seems a bit weird to me.
